Well, whatever is in your head about a "real" French bakery, Mason Georges Larnicol fits the bill. They make a dazzling array of sweets and candies for the taking, including of course macaroons. I was on a macaroon binge when I was in Paris, and having Georges Larnicol across from our hotel was entirely dangerous. The macaroons are priced per piece and you can hand-select your flavors. Unsurprisingly, my favorites were chocolate, cafe (coffee) and citron (lemon). The citron one was especially awesome - with a filling that was so beautiful and tart that I'm not sure it wasn't lemon curd instead of buttercream. But I could've eaten them by the truckload. The other big winner for me was one of the chocolate squares that you can buy. It was the milk chocolate square that has some sort of crunchy caramel toffee stuff that was just delicious. It kind of reminded me of heath bar but like way way crackier. The pieces were very fine which made the whole chocolate square really yummy to eat. We sampled a variety of other things, including the serve-yourself pastries in the window. All were good. But the two above were my favorite. read more

Date of visit: September 11, 2022 We were walking to a boat tour of the Seine and wanted a little snack to wash down the terrible food we had at a tourist trap restaurant near the Eiffel Tower and came upon this place near the shops and theatres of the Odeon area. I didn't think it was open as there was no one in the store but there was a large sign that said they were in fact open so we popped in and I am glad we did! They have a little bit of everything though the star of the show is really the kouignettes. We got a salted caramel one and an almond one, but the salted caramel was everything. We also snagged some macarons because we were in France, and those were also fantastic. My husband doesn't normally care for macarons but he really liked these. Really the only reason I can't go five stars is because service was a bit meh. The one person working was more concerned with stocking than assisting us and I almost felt like I was bothering her to get our items. read more

I went to the expense-overrated Macaroon place near Arc de Triumphe first. I was like, "There's no way I'm paying this much per macaroon." So I didn't. Sorry if any Natives are offended. This was next to a restaurant my friends and I ate for lunch. It was a neat, welcoming, and sleek shop. Display cases were neat and orderly. They had more options than macaroons too. Their macaroons were all under 1 Euro each, so I tried a lot of their flavors. I really loved the passion fruit one and the almond ones! The cashier was super friendly and patient with me, as a foreigner who was overwhelmed by all the options. I'd definitely return and try their other decadents if I'm ever in Paris again. Delicious chocolate! The chocolate and Kouignettes were absolutely amazing. The mini-chocolate chip cookies however left much to be desired.

My main reason for stopping by here was to try the kouignettes, so I purchased a regular kouignette and a citron gateau (cake). The kouignette was too sweet for my tastes. I think if I had an opportunity to heat it up, it would have been much better. I saved the gateau until I made it back to the United States. It held up really well. It had fresh lemon zest in the cake and the lemon frosting wasn't sweet. The cake was moist and buttery too. If you don't like sweet cakes and/or are looking for a small French treat to take back home, then the gateaus are an excellent choice. There were several flavors available for both kouignettes and gateaus as well as many other sweet selections. You're sure to find something to meet your needs. read more

Like many others have expressed in their review, there is no way to pass by this sweet shop without stopping in for some treats. From the largest meringues I've ever seen to endless amounts of macaroon flavors to assorted chocolates and other sweets, the selection here is absolutely outstanding. Unfortunately I didn't have much room in my travel bag to grab a bunch of goodies (I wanted to buy everything), so I only ended up with a bag of macaroons. I tried coconut, strawberry, vanilla and pistachio and all were delicious, especially pistachio which is always my fave! The pricing was pretty fair, and I was able to grab a bag of 6 macaroons for only a few euro. I definitely suggest stopping in for a pick me up if you find yourself in the Montmartre area. It's located on a street packed with trinket shops. I bought a few lose macaroons in a small bag the night before; . (For the paper bag, I've to ask for twice and seeing the reluctance. Maybe the Europeans' frugality is saving the world.). They tasted ok. The following day for the convenience I went there to buy a box for Beijing. Ha. Ta piece of the macaroon. I just don't get it why would they charge that much more for a cheap container. It clearly (pun intended) doesn't worth it and makes the cookies looking so cheap. I have no choice but to pay because the distance I'll have to bring to. Oh the Frenchy. The ending isn't too pretty: after the security check at the airport, most of them are ruined. read more

In Paris there are a million shops that sell chocolate, macaroons, and gourmet sweets, but I have to admit, Maison George's Larnicol was not only the nicest establishment I've seen, the macaroons and chocolate were out of this world!! Located in the heart of Chatélèt, where all the shopping takes place, it was very conveniently on the corner. There was a male and female working inside, and the male was extremely friendly, but the female didn't say a word. I'm guessing she didn't speak English and wanted to avoid our broken French when we ordered, lol, that's fine by me. Came across this shop while trying to find the Luxembourg Gardens (never made it, by the way), and this became another happy accident during our stay in Paris. Wall-to-wall bins of all kinds of chocolates filled the store with a lovely aroma, and we bought a small bag to sample a few. No clue what we were eating, but the assorted chocolate balls were creamy and crunchy and definitely some of the best chocolates I have ever eaten in my life. Given that it was Easter weekend, I was surprised not to find any chocolate bunnies in the store. (Maybe it's just a German/American thing and they're not big in France.) Instead, they had chocolate chickens and little chocolate speckled eggs. My only regret after reading the other reviews below is that we didn't try the macaroons or kouignettes. He has a chess set in white and dark chocolate, kouign amann, mendiants, caramels, and of course chocolates. His shop is more casual than any MOF establishment I've ever entered, with bins of self service varieties so you can pick as many or few of his creations as you would like and items are weighed at the counter. His designs are literally works of art, recreating eggs, mussels, and truffles but made with chocolate! Everything tastes as good as it looks. My favorites are the truffle with crispy bits inside, the salted caramel, and the seashells made with dark chocolate. My friends loved he mussels with a hazelnut milk chocolate filling and I can't wait to go back and try the kouign amann. read more

Delicious dessert! We tried several macaron flavored; coconut, lemon, passionfruit, rose, pistachio, raspberry, blackberry. All of them were spot on with flavor, had the perfect crunch when biting in as well. Size wasn't consistent though. We had a couple macarons that were very obviously smaller than the rest. Some macarons had uneven filling. But that's alright! The caramels are delightful too. Tried the apple, sea salt, gingerbread, plum, and sesame and they were all so good! I must say that while the kouignettes were good taste wise, I wasn't a fan of the texture. Back at home, kouign amanns are crispy and flaky on the outside and soft in the the middle. At this store, it was just all soft. I was disappointed in these but the macarons and caramels were great and the staff was very helpful so overall, I'll give this place 4 stars. read more

Macarons for days!! This is no laduree but it is Paris and it is good. I came here last year and loved their chocolate shells. The one I got was a cute little shoe I think. Came back day after Christmas last week and it was packed as usual. They have macarons, candies, chocolate, cookies and then some. I particularly love the little chocolate or ornaments. It's not cheap but it is good. Or try the macarons! Location is such that you will by default stop by in here if you're walking their saint Germain or Latin quarter. Lines can get quite long and the staffs can get a little feisty. But that's a given if you're working in the busiest area! Either way, try it out!! Lines are long but never as long as laduree. Like a hound dog, I followed the sweet smell of chocolate to this shop and had to walk inside. Well once I took a look around, I knew there was no way I was getting out of there empty handed. I started at the macaroon side of the place and filled a bag with a variety of different flavors. To be honest, I liked these even more than the ones I tried at Lauderee. Then came the chocolate. I had to restrain myself from getting it all but definitely tried a ton. From the milk chocolate and strawberry chips to pure dark chocolate pieces, everything was exquisite. When it was all weighed at the checkout, I was actually quite surprised that the total was as low as it was. I was planning on bringing my treats on the plane to dull my sadness about leaving Paris. The shop smells like chocolate, and they have SO much selection from dark, to milk, to chips, to bars. The store is dim and it is pleasant to shop and look around especially if you are a chocolate lover and need time to narrow down your options. I love chocolate and wanted to buy the whole store, but, what caught my eye were the macarons. I do not know what it is about these little guys, but they are just amazing, and Maison Georges does it well. For 100g of macarons, I got about 6 or seven of them for 5 euros. The texture and flavor were heaven. Just be careful not to store them in your purse or bag if you have a long journey ahead, they will most likely get crushed. Chocolates, macarons, and kouign amann. Kouign amann is a Brittany-region sweet. It's kinda a pinwheel that is chock full of butter and sugar, which caramelizes when baked leading to gooey, sticky bits of sugary goodness. Kouign amann would taste better if they were a slight tad warm, this way the sticky, sugary caramel syrup will melt a little bit, making it a gooey treat to eat. It is sheer buttery richness. Here it's self-service and they have multiple flavors each day ranging from salted caramel, fruit flavors, plain, and nut flavors. I actually think the macarons here are not bad, which are much cheaper than their other macaron counterparts at Laudree and Pierre Herme. They are certainly smaller and you buy by weight. The citron one was pretty good, as there was a small piece of gelee or candied peel inside of the filling which gave a good bite of brightness and texture to the macaron. In general, I really like the fruit macarons over the other types of flavors from Larnicol. For this part, you will need someone to package it for you. This shop has a lot of bulk chocolates and candies available. There's also a lot of molded chocolate sculptures. There's a small box of free samples on the counter where the cash register is. After reading David Lebovitz's reviews of the kouignettes, I finally decided to go in and try one of the little pastries myself. I went with the kouignette nature (plain). Imagine a croissant drenched in honey syrup. This little beauty was perfectly flaky, just sweet enough, and extremely buttery; it's perfect for those days you want a croissant but also need something sweet--and the almond croissant is too sweet and chocolate is just not going to cut it. Amazingly diverse, wonderful candy/chocolate shop in Paris. We of course went for their kouignettes. I love kouign amman and this is the place to get them in Paris. They're not as fresh and crispy as I thought they would be, but given the quantity and diversity, they probably bake them a few days ahead of time. I got some caramels to go, I did not like those.
