This is my second time coming here, and I'm not even from Tennessee I'm from Florida! The fact that I've gone out of my way twice while traveling just to come back says a lot about how good this place is. I believe they have two or maybe three locations, but I've always gone to their food truck in front of Choppers. Since it's a food truck, seating is limited to the patio area or inside Choppers, but you're welcome to bring your food inside and they'll even bring it to your table! We came here between errands a couple of weeks ago very excited to try out a new spot. However, we were very disappointed. The service was poor, as if they were doing us a favor by taking our order. The food was mid at best, but nothing worth going back for. The pairing with the bar nextdoor is neat, but that was the only reason I gave it any stars at all. I've been following this restaurant for a while now and was looking forward to trying them out when in town. When you pull up it's an older "dingy" food truck which is usually a good sign from my experience. I knocked as the note said and was immediately greeted by the employee. He kindly took my order and told me 10 mins. He was friendly and polite which is all I could ask for. The food came out quickly and was hot as hot food should be. The birria tacos were delicious all by themselves and didn't need the consumè. And I like that the cilantro and onions come in the side. I also got the elotes which has the option of on or off the cob. I got off. The flavor was nice and it was good to see a more "traditional" elotes and not some random dish with corn being called elotes. Just simple corn, mayo, spice and cheese. We also ordered the bean and cheese burrito which is extremely reasonably priced for the side and also hot when it came out. My only request would be a little more salt in the beans but over all I was happy. All in all good food and a fair price. As for seating there isn't any unless you are drinking at the bar, which we weren't so we ate off the hood of The car which wasn't the easiest thing with the weather blowing everything around. We always go to the food truck. Decided to try the restaurant, it did not disappoint. We ordered the taco salad with chicken, taco plate with cauliflower and flautas as an appetizer. I have religiously searched for Birria Tacos in Nashville and have come across a couple of different spots. However, NONE have come close to the flavor that this place delivers. This spot was a Semi finalist for the James Beard Award back in 2023. From that alone, I think it warrants giving it a try. The birria beef tacos were well prepared, cheesy and paired well with the consome. I recently found out that you can you can get different color tortillas based on the corn used and that will change the flavor. I've been here twice already and the first time I had the blue tortillas and the second time it was the standard yellow. Finally swung in Chopper for a few Sunday afternoon cocktails and of course, once I got down drink #1, the stomach was rumbling so naturally I headed up to Maiz De La vida for some delicious Mexican grub! Maiz De La vida is a local Mexican food truck that has a wonderful partnership with Chopper in East Nashville. Chopper slings the drinks, Maiz De La vida serves the food! They have a pretty expansive menu for a food truck that includes tacos of all kinds, quesadillas, quesabirria, taco/burrito bowls, churros and even family packs of all the goods. Prices are borderline expensive, but quality, portion size and quickness of service make it all worth it. Given their location with Chopper, seating is indoor or outdoor, and they even track you down and deliver to your table. Service is solid, friendly and fast. From the window to the table, the fellas in the truck were great! The vibe of the truck and vibe of Chopper really mix well. This all started as a handmade tortilla business inside the owner's kitchen and now he has a fully loaded food truck that permanently sits outside of Chopper tiki bar. I was only able to sample their Carne quesadilla, because we were in kind of a hurry, but this cheesy, crispy, meaty treat was soooo good! It. One order gets you two quesadillas and it's big enough to share, but if you're hungry, sharing is not recommended. Btw, These surprisingly pair well with the rum based cocktails served at Chopper. All the tortillas served on this food truck are corn and handmade by the owner, Julio and his crew. For fear of being chased by an angry mob with pitchforks, I'll give this a '3'.* Unfortunately, not a whole lot went right for me when visiting MdlV. Check the tape: I'd been excited about (and, when I had a bigger platform, told people about) them for a while. My job changed then the world changed and I didn't get out as much as I used to so hitting the truck became a 'do next time' task. Well, on a Sunday afternoon in early summer**, 'next time' became 'now' and I headed on over to Lockeland Springs in search of birria goodness. I didn't find it. It was only early summer but climate change laughs in the face of calendars so it was already 93 degrees in the early afternoon sun. MdlV is a truck. I wasn't drinking at Chopper so I felt odd loitering in their space to get away from the heat. 'It's a truck that specializes in tacos; I can wait it out.' I couldn't. After ordering, I waited 32 minutes for four tacos. After ordering, I witnessed people who ordered AFTER I did get their food before I did. After ordering, I paid $20+ for four tacos, while waiting in the heat for more than a half hour and having people who ordered after me (I didn't have much else to do than watch the truck/window in 32 minutes) get served before me. These were going to have to be God-tier tacos to make up for all of this. They weren't. The birria tacos were beef, not goat (as I'd hoped for). They were not crispy (as advertised). The tortillas broke (as advertised they wouldn't). The tacos themselves predominantly tasted of oil. It's not leaning too much into hyperbole to say that every bite was a disappointment. The one save to the meal was the chicken taco. The green chile paired very well with the meat, cheese, cream, herbs, and citrus. I finished that taco wishing I'd ordered more of them instead. Was introduced to Maíz De La Vida by some friends that live in Nashville and it was my personal favorite out of all the amazing restaurants we went to in this city! Following our friends' suggestions, we went with beef quesabirria and elote. We originally tried ordering four orders of beef quesabirria, but fortunately the kind lady at the counter was watching out for our best interests and suggested we get the family platter instead. It's a better deal if you are here with 4-5 people. The platter comes with sixteen quesabirria tacos, a quart of consommé, and enough hot sauce, limes, onions, and cilantro to keep you happy. I cannot express how perfect these quesabirrias are-- there's noticeable quality in each of the individual ingredients, from the juicy wagyu beef to the perfectly crisped-up corn tortillas to the delightfully stringy cheese. And don't get me started on the consommé-- if I drowned in this rich, savory goodness I'd die happy. We were a group of four and each ate four quesabirria tacos and may have hurt ourselves a little by the end, but was definitely worth it. Would consider bringing a fifth person for the next time though. Would suggest doing yourself a favor and making a stop here if you haven't already! I'll be back for sure. read more

Holy crap this is the best Mexican food I have had outside of Mexico, maybe even better than some I had. Owner Julio Hernandez does a truly incredible job and puts his whole heart into his craft. All of his care, effort, and attention to detail comes through in all of his food so clearly. The couple of times I've been it has been at a food truck in East Nashville outside of a tiki restaurant looking place. There's seating outside of it that I'm not sure we can use, but we were told by the staff at the food truck that it was alright. Good luck finding parking, but at the same time it is extremely worth it to make the effort to find parking. We've ordered tacos, quesadillas, birria, elote, churros. WOW!!! The flavors are so strong and absolutely perfect. Everything tastes so fresh, and so carefully prepared. My lone complaint is a lot of the goodness on the elote kind of stuck to the foil it came in. Maiz de la Vida makes some fantastic food! My wife and I went to Chopper Tiki this past weekend for their Christmas popup and we were excited to come as we wanted to try Maiz de la Vida as we heard that their food was excellent. Ordering is super easy as you can do it from your phone via ToastTab, which was great since it was cold outside (you can order directly at the food truck as well as it's directly outside of Chopper). We ordered the fish tacos and beef birria and both were great! The fish tacos were very refreshing and light and very tasty. The beef birria tacos were even better though and were so very flavorful, especially with the consume. We really liked that the tacos themselves weren't huge as birria is super filling. The food here is great honestly. Went here as a second option when my wife and I's initial plan didn't work out and we were so glad it went down that way. We went on a Saturday evening with no reservations and were able to get seated pretty quickly at the bar. Although, I would recommend getting reservations beforehand because it was full and we coincidentally walked in when another couple was leaving the bar or else it would've looked like we would've had to wait a while. The prices are a little high for the portion sizes, but I would be lying if I said it wasn't worth it. The portions are a little smaller, but the taste and quality of the food is amazing. The food tastes authentic and elevated which had me raising my eyebrows with each bite of a new meal. We ordered the fish and chicken tinga tacos which we definitely recommend. We also ordered the chorizo cheese appetizer item which also was a great addition. Add that with 3 drinks between my wife and I, our bill was a little more than $100 with tip. Definitely on the pricier side, but would definitely go again for another date night as the whole experience was a great one.
