Owner Jim Hoteling in March 2023 told me that my failure to pay their bill raised "a red flag". He refused to send a revised bill and refused to restart service. Subsequently, I estimated the cost of the work that entailed blowing leaves that I myself missed as $150, sent Hillside a check for $150, and hired another landscaping company. Note that back in November I contacted Hillside that their bill was incorrect, but received no response. As I told Hillside, I am the sole caretaker of a terminally ill husband. Hillside's work was average but I wanted to keep them for the sake of continuity in my life of upheavals. I begged them to send a correct bill and restart service. I find their insulting and dishonest behavior to be sick.

Specific examples: 1- The owner, Todd, failed to tell us that his quote for services did not include a $3-$4 per charge for gasoline. Our yard is less than 1/4 acre, easily handled by one fill up of the small tank on our own lawnmower. Was it really necessary to charge for a gallon of gas each time the lawn was mowed? And more importantly, not tell us in advance? 2- Todd raised the price of service twice, also without informing us in advance. 3- We mistakenly double-paid one month and did not receive credit for the extra $200 until pointing out the error. 4- We did not receive any bill for services for two months despite multiple requests to do so, both in writing and on the phone. 5- When we did finally receive the first bill, it included dates when the Binghamton area received significant rainfall, including one day when the area also got rain the day before and the day after. (I still get flash flooding alerts and warnings on my phone, and weather records are easily checked on the internet.) We gave him the benefit of the doubt, figuring he just listed service on every Monday as we had agreed, even if the lawn was actually mowed on other days of the week. All in all, we're betting that other contractors would provide equal service with better communication and more accurate price quotes.

After an exceptionally heavy rain, a maple tree in my yard snapped its trunk and fell through a…read moreneighboring walnut tree, breaking it in half as well. I called Thompson Tree & Crane after a friend recommended them. Zach came by and we discussed options for the walnut tree, ultimately deciding to remove it, since it had lost its main trunk and most of its branches. Morgan, Zach, and another crew member removed both the maple and walnut trees with minimal disturbance to the area. Morgan did an excellent job of taking down the mortally wounded walnut tree without harming a redbud tree growing under it. I've never seen a chainsaw used with such surgical precision. For no additional charge, they also removed a large amount of branches left behind by a different contractor after a pruning job earlier in the year. Removing trees is always sad. After watching them grow over many decades, they're like family. The walnut in particular will be greatly missed. But Thompson Tree & Crane did the job with care, and I would recommend them without hesitation.
