After hiking all day. We wanted something refreshing. Makani's was out of unicorn ice cream. I selected a pineapple bowl with Ube Ice Cream and sprinkles. Ice cream was creamy and not too sweet. I felt magical eating sprinkles with it. It was a little pricey, but that's the cost of living in Hawaii. I would say the bowl was a nice aesthetic for Instagram, but not worth the extra dollars. Grab the cone!! A female staff member seemed a little annoyed and closed the shop 15 minutes early. A family came to the door and were disappointed it closed early. Otherwise, it was a great experience and would come back. read more

I'm not a big soft serve person, but the flavors here made me want to try theirs. I got a Unicorn Swirl (which is ube and dragonfruit) with Strawberries and Pineapple. This is some of the best soft serve I've had. I love ube, but the dragonfruit was actually my favorite between the two. It's definitely worth stopping by for a treat here! read more

I was looking for a sweet treat after a day of exploring and after reading the reviews, I moseyed on in to Makani's. After much contemplation and internal debating upon whether to order an açaí bowl or ice cream, I went ahead with the unicorn cone, topped with sprinkles, and a side of mochi. (Note: the unicorn corn is a swirl of dragon fruit and ube soft serve) One lick is all it took for my taste buds to twirl and groove; what a DELICIOUS choice I made. Although slightly pricey, the unicorn cone was delectable and hit the spot. Light, refreshing, and left me walking out with a happy belly. Highly recommend to any and all that are in the area and looking for a solid spot for a sweet treat. Note: if you're debating whether to get the açaí bowl or the unicorn ice cream, I highly recommend the ice cream. Your taste buds and inner child will thank you. read more

Leaving two stars because the ice cream was good but the service is very bad here. The two girls working today were very rude and not very welcoming to customers. Watched them be rude to a lady trying to explain that she was charged incorrectly for an item and the worker just cut her off and said "hold on". We drove two hours from Kona to try this place out and was disappointed to hear that the ice cream machine wasn't working to make the unicorn swirl (which is understandable) but on top of that the girls were not so friendly. Hope the owners recognize their customer service needs improvement and less attitude /: read more

We got the Aloha bowl without the pineapple. It came fresh and loaded to the brim with beautiful fruit. The service was pretty quick for how crowded it was when we got here. The music was the perfect vibe for chilling and eating. I appreciated the games they had available. read more

This was such a vibe. We got this after our hike and it was a perfect pick me up. We were able to enjoy it while enjoying the nice chill vibes music along with the delicious ube soft serve on a cone. They added sprinkles to it too. My mom got the heavenly pineapple smoothie and it was just as refreshing. The service matched the ambiance of this place and I would definitely recommend. We got the unicorn ice cream in a pineapple bowl and Cookie Monster bowl to help beat the heat. We really liked the unicorn one, which was a swirl with ube and dragonfruit ice cream. I feel like the pineapple bowl wasn't really worth it because you can't eat most of the fruit, but it is pretty! I wouldn't recommend the Cookie Monster bowl because it was overly sweet with all the Nutella and I feel like the cookie dough didn't go well with the açaí. read more

To say disappointing is an understatement. Instagram account is nothing like in person. Bowl had nothing to it. The Açaí was hollow so very little product same as the ice cream cone. Worker told me they didn't have Mac nuts or any other local fruit. Worker just stated oh well we don't make them like Instagram anymore. But also maybe change ingredients on menu since the product does not reflect what you get. Wish I would have just got my money back. Do not recommend due to product and service. read more

I was making a point to stop by this restaurant as I have heard great things. I walked in and they have a small menu which is good because you don't have to spend 30 minutes deciding what you want. The restaurant, is small and nice and my best and favorite ice cream is the unicorn ice cream. If you are near by and you want some good ice cream, you need to make it a point to visit this spot. read more

Cool little spot, great story about the shop. The flavor of the products was tasty and worth the price point but the service lacked, the cashier was lounging in the back taking his time to come and attend us and other customers. When. I asked him about certain flavors he kind of did not answer my question and didn't really know the products/ingredients they sold. Ambience was inviting but if you look at detailing, it needs some tlc. Missing pineapples on wall, very raw photography inside, left over half drank beverages (can't tell if old customers or the employee's) and only one table for people to enjoy their ice cream. read more

Hubby discovered this fun, brightly colored shop on our most recent trip to the Big Island. We're suckers for the novelty of things served in a pineapple. So...when we saw the Unicorn Dole Whip, we knew that was for us. I think it is dragon fruit & ube swirl with sprinkles & multicolored mochi. It was very tasty and colorful. Stopped by for a quick soft serve. Service was very friendly, though things do move slowly, and they have a sign near the register that encourages customers to be patient. We got the kid's size ube soft serve which was actually a lot. We shared it amongst 2 people and couldn't finish. We also got to sample the unicorn, which is dragonfruit and ube swirled. We prefered the ube since it's a lot more creamy, but the dragonfruit was tart and refreshing and is dairy-free. read more

Cute spot if youre craving something sweet. They have many options to choose from including smoothies, ice cream, coffee, and acai bowls. I got an aloha açaí bowl, but with granola, banana, and peanut butter. It was delicious, but the amount of açaí that you get is definitely not worth $14. We had driven to the Magic Pineapple Shack 15 mins before close. Unfortunately they had closed for the day because their ice cream machine broke. We drove back to Kona that day and decided to try again the next. After 1.5 hours of driving, we finally got to taste the unicorn mix with Ube and Dragonfruit in a pineapple bowl. Before I leave my trip last week Tuesday I came in to "makanis magic pineapple shack" with excitement and high expectations as for we seen their instagram while in cali. EXTREMELY disappointed and DISGUSTED when I came. Nothing like the photos. As my order was being taken a little girl was putting her hands, licking it then digging back in the same ice cream tubs they serve us!!! . Music was so loud we couldn't hear our orders when called then we received attitude from a girl with a face tattoo because we couldn't hear. Saw ROACHES crawling on the wall by us. The back where they made the ice cream was extremely filthy not to mention crowded. Save your money it's not that good. Don't eat here. The girls who makes your food is dirty. She lifted her bra and wiped her boob sweat and then rubbed her nose several times while talking to us. She kept rubbing and touching her face and never once washed her hands. If you ask me that's totally nasty and dirty. Do you really want all that in your food? read more

Came in on 8/1 some time after 3pm. Insanely loud music where you can't have a conversation. The sole outside table was used up by the staff and their friend. Service was super super slow, staff unfriendly and disinterested, and after a long wait for our stuff, they were out of Acai. I recommend going one block over to Kula Shave Ice for a much better experience, service, food, and outdoor seating. read more

Absolutely delicious! We were sad to see their soft serve machine was down, but we ordered the Aloha and Uber and they did not disappoint. Probably the best flavored acai we have ever had and just so much goodness in every bite. The place is small and has minimal seating indoors and outdoors, and they do not have a bathroom you can use and the girl was kind of rude about it but whatever. read more

They call in the "UniCone"...this crazy concoction is their signature magical blend of Ube and Dragonfruit soft serve made with real Unicorn milk from local free range organic grass fed Unicorns living on Mauna Kea. The Ube has a nice creamy mellow sweet flavor while the Dragonfruit is an intense flavorful sweetness...it perfect combo! If you get in a waffle cone, its huge! $7 is a little pricy, but I don't think you'll find this anywhere else on the planet. Note: I might have made up that Unicorn portion of the story. read more

Had a chance to swing by Makani's after we tried once and it was closed. I'm glad we came back the 2nd time around cause it was super satisfying. The unicorn soft serve was a perfect combo of açaí and Ube. The lightness of the acai and denseness of the Ube were perfect compliments. The acai bowl was a good portion size and very fresh. Makani's is a cute little dessert and acai bowl place in downtown Hilo. There was a bit of a line when we got there, and it wasn't moving very fast but once we were inside we saw that there were only 2 employees behind the counter and they were really hustling so respect to them! I would give this place 5 stars for their photogenic unicone (dragonfruit + ube soft serve), which had good flavors and consistency. The chocolate macnut gelato was also pretty good. However, the mango gelato was a bit of a miss and didn't really taste like mango. The unicone was delicious enough that we would certainly have gone back for it again had we had enough time! read more

Was dying to have Hawaiian shaved ice (in wet Hilo), but came across this place and I was hooked by the aesthetics! We ended up getting the Unicorn soft serve which had ube and acai. Combination was so good together and something you cannot find elsewhere! Food matched the vibes of the place so much! I ended up getting an ube coffee and it was made with cold brew and did not have any strong taste/sweet enough for me. Would not recommend the coffees at all. Otherwise, we found parking in a nearby lot and walked to the store. There is street parking available although I can imagine it getting crowded. read more

Not much wait around 2pm on a Monday Cookie monster was okay (was expecting eyes like in other reviews!) Unicone was good for being aesthetic for the gram. The ube was creamy and dragon fruit was tangy. A good balance! I would get just dragon fruit next time, it was pretty refreshing and had some seeds. I was sold. Although we were tempted to create our own shaved ice, we ultimately went with "The Local", a soursop and liliko'i combo topped with haupia cream. Between the two flavors, I enjoyed the sour sop side a bit more since it was the one that was less sweet. The cream on top was absolutely delicious, and reminded me of the light and airy frothed milk cream you find on many boba drinks these days. There's a generous amount ladled on top, ensuring you can have some in every bite without having to carefully ration out the cream. Overall, I'm a fan of Kula Shave Ice. Definitely a great dessert to enjoy on a hot day. Worth checking out if you're ever in Hilo.

I like coconut and pineapple mixes but most places lean on the safety in bananas, strawberries etc. which you can definitely get here, but I'm stoked they try for more tropical flavors. I mean with mango and guava I'm in heaven. I'm always buying bottled aloe vera drinks in stores, I love the actual aloe chunks. This is obviously way better and healthier even if the aloe is blended into the smoothie so you don't even notice it. Safe & inviting for the timid folks I know. Yum yum yum. Please try & support small businesses! Find them in the Tokunaga parking lot. Hopefully they drive all over the island someday and spread the love.

Instead, Keaukaha General Store (within easy walking distance of the Port of Hilo) provided a great selection of sundries, some souvenirs of Hilo, and a small menu of Hawaiian favorite dishes at prices that were the lowest I've seen in Hawaii. My wife and I came here twice: first while walking into town, when we picked up souvenirs and an unexpected loco moco plate. It was a lot less crowded then, with us being the only ones there...allowing us to have a completely different experience. When we came back as we headed back towards the ship, other cruisers from the ship had discovered this place, and were stocking up on various things. It's a large modern space inside, with things organized displayed very neatly. There was no sense I needed to check for expiration dates. There was a portable ATM machine right by the door. A decent selection of alcohol at good prices were displayed (e.g. $8.81 for a bottle of Barefoot Cab or $18.99 for a 12 pack of Budweiser). I took the opportunity to get something I've not seen elsewhere: a bag of dried clams (aka Asari) for $4.19. Ended up finishing it that night...was really good. It has an all day menu, and was able to order a Loco Moco for breakfast. The all beef patty was very thick and dense, definitely from a frozen patty...good for Salisbury steak or Loco Moco, but wouldn't be great for a burger. The brown gravy was served hot and hadn't congealed, and the 1 egg had been cooked over easy, just as requested. It was obviously freshly made. It was packed to-go, with condiments and utensils available near the registers. There wasn't much space to eat inside, but because it wasn't too busy, found a space to sit in the back. I scarfed it down (probably too fast) while my wife finished her shopping. Also in the back, there are gourmet coffee machines and a chest freeze full of hand scoopable ice cream. There is a Pepsi self serve soda machine, along with various sizes of chips. My wife initially bought a couple of t-shirts as requested souvenirs for our travel mates ($25 a piece), and bought another one as we were heading back. On the 1st trip, she also liked a perfume body mist...the tester was the last one so the attendant sold it for half price ($14). For us, she bought a Hilo waterproof sticker for $2.75. And her favorite part of the store was the small portable Pokémon card machine, that dispensed random Japanese Pokémon cards for a quarter. She kept changing out dollars for quarters and ended up getting $5.75 of them...and a couple of them were hollos that we like. They do charge a 3.25% credit card fee, so cash is preferred when possible.
