Luckily there was a novice stylist who was just starting to take clients who could fit me in. The salon is very elegant and stylish. A place they would offer you a glass of wine or champagne. (they didn't) The stylist did a great job. I just haven't been back because I'm too cheap to spend that kind of money on a regular basis. Supercuts is more my speed these days.

We had an appointment with Vanessa Mendez on September 2, 2025 and I explained to her what I wanted done but she didn't do that--apparently she did something according to a picture my daughter showed her when I was moving my car. The problem with the photo my daughter showed her is that the girl in the picture had straight hair, completely different than my daughter's hair. When you are 10, you can't understand that your hair won't look like that of the picture. I don't know if you have kids but I'm guessing Vanessa does not. You do what the parent says, not the child. So here's all the reasons I'm upset: 1. Although I just wanted the bottom 3 inches or so to have color, she bleached it almost all the way up to her roots in front, maybe an inch from the top. 2. Blue. I said BLUE. After the bleaching process, she started putting GREEN with a slightly blue tint dye on her hair. I stopped her and said it needed to be more blue. She begrudgingly went back and added blue but now, 3 1/2 weeks later, the color has washed out and it's an awful shade of light green. The reason why I wanted blue is because I knew the color would wash out and light blue would look so much better than this brassy green color it now is. 3. I asked Vanessa if she thought a Brazilian Blowout would help smooth out the texture of her hair and she assured me that it would but it didn't. If anything, it's made her hair more dry and crunchy than it would have been otherwise. I have had Yuko Japanese straightening done on my own hair so I know that the 2 swipes with a flat iron wasn't enough to do anything but I trusted she knew what she was doing. Within an hour after leaving the salon, her hair was poofy, frizzy and felt like straw. Mind you, this was on 100% virgin hair that had never had any treatments of any sort. 4. We spent the entire day at this salon, from 10am to around 3:45pm and Vanessa made us feel like we were bothering her the entire time. She didn't talk to us at all, except when I had to intervene in what she was doing and only in response. This outing cost me over $700 so I was upset to see that the salon is now "temporarily closed," according to Yelp. The phones are disconnected and I've gotten no response by email or Facebook. I literally feel like she stole my money since she either didn't know how to do a Brazilian Blowout or she just didn't care. In hindsight, (it was probably Vanessa's guilty conscience since she knew she was charging me for a Brazilian Blowout that we didn't get), I tipped her too well because she asked me multiple times if I was sure I wanted to give her that big of a tip. Also in hindsight, she probably wasn't worried about me coming back to complain since she knew the salon was about to close down. Google shows that Salon Soleil is supposed to reopen January of 2026, rest assured I will be driving by to check on a regular basis but I'm not getting my hopes up.

The salon is bright and welcoming and everyone we had contact with was polite and easy to deal with. I recommend this salon and Anastasia for all your hair needs. Shop is run by some former beach 'babe' wanna be who has had one too many burritos of late, and her son who thinks he's apparently cool but nothing short of an absolute goon who rambled on about being anti corporate america but drives a posh bmw... Susie, the owner, brings her little dog along, and has trained this poor thing to keep quiet so it just sits there looking sad all day. Asked her did she take him to the famous dog beach. poor thing doesnt even get that. Her assistant, whose name I didnt get, looks like something out of a zombie film, who is 'out of it' and who, just coming near me, made me nervous, given she had sharp things in her hands but didnt seem to know what day it was. She had no idea what I had come in for and had started to set it up for some entirely different procedure... Rather uncomfortable the way Susie spoke to her, though probably warranted, but treated her as if she was completely stupid which doesnt do much for customer confidence. I popped into this shop to get one of my wefted hair extensions which had dreadlocked (not done by this shop), removed given I live abroad and was out visiting and saw this salon during a street fair, and this dreadlocked tangle was driving me mad. She charged me 25 dollars to remove one weft, which would have been ok, however, given the fact she still charged this even though I decided to book new kerotin extensions with her for 650 dollars - well, a bit tacky, really, innit (i would have comped the ten minute fix given the business for the new extensions which I paid 150 deposit for, it were me). Anyway, she put the extensions in, and not only do they not match my hair as the old ones did (they are too dark - is she blind? - don't ask me if they are right babe, you ought to know...), but after just over a week one has already come out and I have done nothing that would make it my fault, following her instructions on after care. Also, the hair looks great when she first puts it in, but it must just be some gloss because once you wash it, it looks crap. She uses cheap hair, and I heard her on the phone, she only pays 20 bucks for hair donations, then charges 650 and more for extensions. what a profit, but then youve got the huntington beach overheard, and her posh car, and her son's posh car, to pay for, havent you. And it wasnt until I left the salon that I realised she hadnt put extensions on the front part of my hair, where they were before, which also angered me, but I had no time to return to get it put right. Again though, she ought to have done it properly in the first place but the whole thing seemed a shoddy, rushed job even though I paid big bucks for it... Further to that she made racist remarks, which is fair enough, but not in a salon with a total stranger... i realiase its HB which is chock full of skinheads but crikey i dont want to talk about that sort of s**t in the salon chair, do you? For the 650 I paid, I was barely offered a cup of tea, which they dont even have in the shop but she sends the zombie out to fetch from starbucks which is brought back cold. Sadly, this is about what I expected from this town. I will be pursuing a partial refund from Susie for the fact that my hair is falling out after just one week. Avoid this shop. Staff arent happy, either, and it shows. read more

Cory is my girl. I live in Huntington Beach, but work in the film business in LA., so I'm used to paying crazy prices in snobby salons for cuts I wasn't always happy with. Also, appointments and I don't always get along, so it was only a matter of time before I was caught with an important meeting, no LA hair appointment and looking terribly scruffy. Taking a gamble I stepped into Makin' Waves Salon and sat in Cory's chair. I remember her smiling at me, this lunatic, as I barked exact orders at her...expecting the worst, she delivered me the PERFECT CUT -- and mind-blowing scalp and neck message. I found this amazing deal on Groupon that offered a hair wash, hair cut, and styling from Nancy who works at Franco Hernanez Hair. It was such a great deal, and after talking to her on the phone I booked an appointment. I had to schedule an appointment with Nancy roughly 2-3 weeks in advance (she's a busy bee!). --LOCATION-- Franco Hernandez is located inside Phenix Salons with their own suite (#107). It's a very small salon with just enough space for 2 clients at a time. They have a small bench that my mom was able to sit while I got my hair done. --EXPERIENCE-- Nancy is such a sweet girl. I learned that she (and Franco, who was working with another client) used to work at Ulta, too. I gave Nancy a lot of liberty with my hair, giving her some specifications but ultimately a lot of freedom. In the end, I got a great haircut out of it. She even taught me how to use shears. To be honest, I liked my hair when it was done but it took a while longer for me to really, really like my hair since it's not as abundant as I'd hope. But, I trusted Nancy and it definitely is a good haircut (I just have super straight and relatively thin hair). She knows hair! Nancy also styled it by "waving" it out. She used a thick curling iron to achieve this. --PRODUCTS-- The salon is stacked full of RedKen products. I'm not sure if she only used RedKen on me, but my hair came out really soft and feels a lot healthier. Nancy and Franco does everything from styling to dying to haircuts. While I was getting my haircut, I saw Franco finishing up a client's hair. She had dyed her hair a spectacular hue of pinks and purples, among other colors. It was vibrant and definitely a statement. Franco and Nancy do a great job. I wish I asked what their normal rates are; I'd be interested in returning to them again in the future.
