This review is for Malaekahana State Park Campground. It's quiet and feels somewhat secluded. You do need a reservation to camp overnight. Note: the gate closes at 6:45pm, so you'll need to plan accordingly. There are some spaces you may be able to park right outside the gate, but I don't think they're considered official parking spots. Double check signs! There are some large sinks throughout the campgrounds which allow for washing dishes, fruits, and vegetables. It's also a great place to freshen up for the day. The bathrooms were clean for a beach bathroom and there are some showers inside the bathroom space as well. The water is cold! The bathroom was pretty well stocked with toilet paper, though it can get low later at night. Bring extra toilet paper just in case. There was no hand soap. The beach was beautiful! It is covered in reef, so it's not a great swimming spot. Perhaps when the tide is high you may be able to go out--but be extremely careful of our precious coral reefs. Great space for lounging on the beach! As always, remember to pack out what you pack in (and grab some plastic from the beach too!). read more

Looking for a affordable weekend with the family? Look no further. If you are a kamaaina, you can stay in the small Hale that sleeps 4 for $50 a night! It's roughing it but I survived a two night stay and so can you! The Plantation Hale comes with nothing. You basically have a place to sleep. No amenities. There is an outdoor shower (cold water only) and toilet (byoTP- toilet paper) both shared with others. Each Hale comes with a fire pit which is super cool! We like Hale 1, 2 , and 3 because it is ocean front. Bring everything you need as if you were tent camping (grill, sleeping bags, coolers, etc.). If roughing it is not your jam no worries. They have plantation suites which have indoor toilets! If you don't mind roughing it there are also tent only areas which is very affordable. The best thing about staying here is that the bay is awesome! My kids loved it so much we are going back again in a few weeks. read more

We didn't camp here (family lives nearby), but it's a great little beach that's usually not as crowded as some of the others (though the afternoons do get pretty busy). Nice waves for beginner surfers and the water is calm enough for families to enjoy. Porta-potties available and dirt parking lot. We usually camp here 2x a year and has gotten better each year. We like getting a hale and bring our bikes for kids. Bike down the road towards laie and get fresh seafood, get their early to ensure a catch. When we first started coming here the customer service was subpar but has progressively gotten better each year. Especially today when I called in, very welcoming. Was able to explain why I couldn't complete booking online, make sure you use chrome on a laptop not phone. The website itself is better now too, for claiming kamaaina discount. She also told me the owner is shutting down in September til April to do upgrades. 10 more Hales will be great for locals to have a better chance of booking. read more

Save your money!!!! You're better off camping on a city and county beach. The Hales are over priced at 58$ plus GET and transient taxes. No lights, bathrooms aren't too far. Showers are basically a cold water spout in the open. Staff are strict on following the rules. No inflatable pools, no extra tents, 10 people per camp site, even if you're outdoors spaces apart. read more

I have stayed at this campground twice both in suite #1 which we like for it's proximity to beach. Provides a couple sleeping options( 1 double & a set of bunk beds) private toilet, countertop, and electricity. Bring something to cover windows and tacks if you are looking for more privacy there is a big sliding door right by bunk beds and 4 other windows which does allow for cross circulation. Cons: The cabin walls were dirty, ants attacked our food and i found a roach in the bathroom. If you have campers in tent camping area on the side of suite #1 their firepit is pretty close and the smoke engulfing your cabin is very irritating. The shower stall designated for this suite is poorly maintained. The tarp surrounding the shower is all torn up and the location of the shower is not ideal (very windy & cold). 1 roach found, a millions ants, cats outside lingering & waiting for any opportunity to tear up garbage bags, lots of chickens jumping on picnic tables looking for food. There was a hole on the patio and the plywood seemed very flimsy in some areas. No sink anywhere in the area. You have to walk up the road. We also rented hale #6 the hale didn't seem clean. Therefore, the ohana preferred to sleep in a tent rather than in the hale. In both locations the walls could use a new coat of paint. I would appreciate somewhere closer to dump trash so we didn't have to leave it in the suite to avoid cats & chickens from tearing into it because this encouraged the ants. Also, a sink in the area would be great too. Other than these few things we still enjoyed our visit. The staff are always nice & friendly. The beach is always beautiful and not crowded. And most if all for the few conveniences of home that the suite provides the kama'aina price is good too! read more

We stayed a week at this campground and absolutely loved it! Check in was smooth even though it was after office hours. Paperwork was left in a box with our code and campground number/map. I will say that it is somewhat difficult to find the spot in the dark. Sunset was around the time we got to the campground. Totally recommend y'all try to make it during sunlight! We stayed at 1H which had a ton of privacy. Could not see any tents unless really looking. Some of the other campsites were closer to the road. I would look up their YouTube video to see some of the different options. I would try to stay in the 1 section, 2-3 is closer to the main gate. During our stay, we had significant privacy, tree coverage, fire pit, and gorgeous sunrises on the beach. Gate open 7 AM-7 PM. We stuck with these rules but there is an option to have gate unlocked for a fee. However, there is a rule to not drive after 7 PM. Some of the beach is rocky (near our campground) but closer to the offices is a nice sandy area. Some yelp reviews say that it is small, we did not think so. There was never more than a dozen people while we were there and it was quite spaced out. Couple potential downsides: 1) If you like hot showers, this is maybe not for you. They have outdoor rinse off stations. 2) If you are a light sleeper, there are cats and chickens that live across the island. Consequently, they are at camp. We found them funny and kept our trash up so it was not an issue. 3) With the common rains, this place can be somewhat muddy. We had a fun time with our small compact rental getting around the puddles. 4) If your car is greater than 6 ft it will not make it through the tunnel. I think there is a road to make it to the other side, but that would be something to discuss with the office. My husband and I never had an interaction with the office except for seeing them make their rounds on the golf cart. The area was usually quiet and I wouldn't try to have a party here. One star because the scenery. Everything else is horrible. Rented a hale for 3 nights. Only stayed one. The place was disgusting. No COVID protocols. At least they could have wiped off hard surfaces between guests. But the cabin visible have not been cleaned for months probably. We bought some disinfectant wipes and wiped the bed frames and mattresses which even had gecko poop on them dried on. We had a horrible night there. The geckos on the wall were nice additions but the scorpio on the floor was a bit too much. They are ignoring my complaints and not responding my emails. Don't ever rent a hale! Good campground. Firepits on deck and the beach minutes away. There are portable restrooms not too far from the main campground and they are fairly clean. I recommend bringing the essentials: toilet paper, toothbrush, and hand sanitizer. The designated camp areas are fairly large, they are far enough apart to enjoy privacy yet close enough to mingle with fellow campers. Bring your own firewood and enjoy the night, the stars shine bright here. Check in: 1pm to 2pm depending on if camping or getting a suite. Check out: 12 pm the following day. I heard theft was a problem here, didn't have this problem but I would take precaution. Secure your stuff! PROS: mellow atmosphere, clean camp areas, and a good experience for new campers. CONS: parking passes (2 per small campground), locked gate after 7pm, small extra parking area for friends, and expensive firewood ($10 for an extremely small bundle). read more

I've always wanted to go camping on Oahu, but I never really found the time nor the right place! Plus, since I'm on a college student budget, it wasn't easy. But my friend JohnNick found this place just in time for spring break! There's a discount for kamaaina, so it was an extra plus! Malaekahana provides multiple camping plots depending on the days you want to be there for. You have the option of either camping in one of their provided cabins, to camp in your own tent or to even camp in your own vehicle! We opted to using my Kia Rio lx and got very Pinterest-y with it (using fairy lights and all). It was great. Though the weather couldn't meet us halfway on the night we did decide to camp, everything else was amazing! We were at Vehicle 6 lot, next to the ocean, carefully spaced out from the others and not too far from a nice, greenery walk to the bathrooms (bring your own hand sanitizer and toilet paper btw). There's also lots of things to do to keep you occupied if the sun was cooperating with us that day, such as rent out a bike/surfboard/paddle board and enjoy the isolated beach. It was very relaxing and very secluded. I still can't believe we survived a night sleeping in my CAR LMAO. It was great. You're not even that far from foodland or wherever for more food if needed. I went camping here with friends over a weekend. We rented a small hale cabin which only had 2 bunk beds with mats on them. You bring your own sheets, pillows, etc. and there is a restroom that everyone shares in the common area. Even though we rented a hale, we used it to store our things and lock it with a padlock. There are homeless people that lurk at night and steal your stuff and when you check in they even warn you about them. While storing our stuff in there I noticed fresh rat droppings all over the mats and floors and it seemed a rat chewed through the top plastic cover of my son's Nestle Quik container. Yuck...glad we didn't sleep in it and pitched a tent... But, for the positives, even if you rent a hale you have a big grassy area to park your car, and also if you want to...pitch a tent. Each hale has a firepit and a picnic bench. We rented three with friends and moved our three picnic benches together and put up a tarp tent. There weren't much bugs or mosquitoes when we went in July, there was a water spout nearby to fill out water buckets up to wash dishes etc. There are no sinks to wash your hands after using the bathroom but we had a portable water spout thing for that to use on our own. We did not use the showers as we drove to a nearby location that we knew of to take a hot shower. We did see the showers which was quite a walk from where we were at. The shower heads are kind of old and the water was barely a trickle and it is just cold water. The beach was nice and sand crab hunting at night is a common camping tradition to keep the kids entertained. Everyone else around us was courteous with the night time noise. I would definitely camp here again. Just use common sense and caution with your items and you will be okay. It was very peaceful and relaxing! read more

We just spent the weekend at Malaekahana Beach Campground and it seriously was the BEST, most RELAXING, and MOST affordable staycay we've ever had! And from the looks of the other smiling kids and their relaxed parents, they felt the same! Since we have 3 kids (4, 7, and 9yo) and it's only our second time camping since having kids we decided "glamping" would be a better bet. We stayed in the Plantation Suites which was CLEAN and had beds and mattresses (bring your own linen), electricity, bathroom (no sink), outside (cold) shower, picnic table, and fire ring. The beach was steps away from our cabin and we literally spent our days from sunrise to sunset on it! Yes, there's a few chickens and roosters, stray cats, and carpenter ants but it was really less than a handful. Our adjoining neighbors in tents, hales, and Tutu's Pavilions were all family oriented and respectful of their neighbors. We would LOVE to come back again in the summer but it's all booked up, but we will definitely be back! read more

This campground is clean, well kept, and the staff is helpful. I highly recommend getting a cabin suite because it's so nice to have a toilet for just your group. The beach here is magical. The morning sunrise is heavenly and the tide coming in so gently made for a relaxing morning with my chair up to the shoreline. Haha! How do you rate a camping ground? Based on its "glamping" capability? I'll break this up in sections with some tips :) *How to book: -Best to book online. You can see availability and self select which specific area/hale/suite you want. There is also kamaaina discount available. *Check in: -different times for different areas. I know for the hale it is from 2pm-4pm. *Late check in: - possible. Best to call to confirm. They will have your check in forms and gate code available for you in a mailbox slot at the main office. *Fire pits: -cute. Round. I've come to find, some areas do not have the metal barrier for the fire pit. -bring a wire grill rack if you want cook your food over the fire *Hale: -Also cute. Can fit up to 4 people. -Bring a lock to keep your things safe in the hale! -Has a picnic table in the area -no windows! -dont forget a lantern! -has no toilet, you'll have to walk! Even in the middle of the night.... you never know when nature calls *Bathrooms: -Woah. Kinda smelly -Bring toilet paper! -sink to wash your hands is kind of far away... Did I miss anything? This being my very first camping experience, I had no idea what to expect. I had heard great things about this place though I was prepared to "rough it"...although rough it we did not! What I loved best about the site was the sense of security. Along the car ride to Laie, passing all the other camping grounds, I couldn't imagine being comfortable pitching a tent that is in full view of the road and sleeping comfortably without fear of (use your imagination: serial killers, out of control car, random scary people) not as if the gates of Malaekahana could keep out most of those things but I did feel secure there! Once you reserve your spot, you are given a gate access code which can be used between 7a-7p daily. Our site was toward the back of the campground and was surrounded by trees, it felt very private although we were just steps from the showers, sink, bathroom and ocean! We had an absolute blast - enjoying the beautiful beach by day and drinking and eating around the campfire by night - I can't wait to go back again! read more

We came here to scope out the place personally because online pictures do no justice and the staff here very rarely answer their phone when you call. Its been a while since we rented cabins here for the weekend. #2 cabin was our favorite because it had a commanding veiw of the beach with a full kitchen two baths with endless hot water huge living room and a good size porch and a garage. It was basically a fricking house. Fast forward to today, these classic cabins are in terrible condition. Delopilated with temporary canvas roofs. We inquired about the #2 cabin but the lady in the office said they are no longer renting those out anymore after the 11th of November because the state has condemned them for demolition. Im just left wondering why it was allowed to get to this point being a very popular camping area. Now, since I'd rather have something closer to the beach, we're looking at the grass shacks. These are $30.00 - $50.00 per night. Perfect for the weekend. Its a little more on the roughing it side but its nothing new to us either. Two people occupy the grass shack but you can have up to eight people outside with pitched tents and canopies too which is great. Honestly, I'd rather sleep in the in the tent or outside under the canopy to get the whole outdoor camping experience. It would be better to make reservations in person. I've had the hardest time trying to contact them by phone. Once in a blue moon, someone will answer. I will update this review after trying out the grass shacks. read more

This has got to be the most frustrating campground EVER! After several hours of calling... a lady finally answered the phone. I was excited to finally get some questions answered and get my simple problem resolved. Unfortunately the lady the answered couldn't help me and was extremely rude and started yelling at me. I had her on speaker phone and my children were shocked at she handled my call. She said she will send all my information to her manager. I asked if I could write down some information regarding her name and her manager's name to keep a record. She said she will not give me her name because she refused to be "targeted?". She hung up the phone on me afterwards. Yikes! I'm so disappointed on how this simple issue was handled. read more

We loved the chickens waking us up in the morning and keeping us company throughout the day. We also enjoyed the short walk over to the beach where we watched people fish and take surf lessons. We camped here in late October for a wedding at Turtle Bay. It was amazing!! Granted, it rained at night and got windy because there was a storm coming, but that's why you have water proof tents, right? Otherwise it was a very affordable, beautiful and comfortable campsite. We woke up every morning to breathtaking sunrises over the water just a few steps from our tent. Some of the roads are narrow and campsites can be tricky to navigate. Just make sure if you are renting a car to make sure it's durable. There are bathrooms! And if you forget toilet paper like us, it's only like 25cents for one roll and you can conveniently pick one up when you are checking in. There's stores nearby too so you don't need to navigate the city if you're flying in. Just start the drive right away. If you don't like wild chickens, then beware, there's plenty of them. I, however, grew up with twenty or so and it made me feel at home! read more

Whaaaaaaat??? I'm only the 3rd reviewer on this place?!? This place is the bomb for camping!!! One of my favorite spots! I have been here countless times with friends...always a blast. The best spot for a tent is in section 2 further down and close by the water. Bring plenty of food to cook over the fire, bring your own toilet paper, as that always seems to run out. Apparently dogs and booze is off limits...eh...my 20 pound dog has made the trip a couple times, and been fine. They don't seem to care about the alcohol rule as long as you aren't being obnoxious. So maybe keg stands are out. Being that the location is completely out of the way from everything and on the way to nowhere, it's a great get away escape for a night or two :) read more

As a single mom I am VERY thankful for Malaekahana Campgrounds. I can actually afford to enjoy an amazing beach and dark night skies all while camping without electronics. Winner Winner, Chicken Dinner!!! And yes, there are wild chickens and feral cats cruising the campgrounds, but without them it would be infested with centipedes and rats. I prefer the resident wild animals to centipede bites and nasty rats grinding my spam musubi! It's a great place to relax, swim, surf, and see a sky full of stars, especially on a budget. read more

Clean upon arrival, easy check-in with friendly customer service at the front desk, and an absolutely beautiful beach right outside our front door. The campsite and beach are 4 to 5 stars. What kept this from being a great experience were the pests. Im not sure if it was just our area if its a campground wide problem but in section 5 we were just inundated with flies. Usually its mosquitos but this is the first time we ve ever experienced this many flies. We looked at our picnic table at one point during dinner and it looked like the scene from Amityville horror. I kept thinking they'd go away in the afternoon but they stuck around until nearly twilight and were back at it around 7am the next day. This was July so Im not sure if that makes a difference. Section 5 again. Also wild chickens were everywhere and they mimicked little dinosaurs. We had a back full of yakitori chicken after bbq and the next morning there were at least 20 with chicks included that were pecking away at the back so there was nothing left except bones. Thats right...cannibals. We had a tough time enjoying ourselves because of the pests. read more

For those of you who know me, you know I'm not much for outdoorsy dirty activities... But my arm got twisted into camping out at Malaekahana for a friends birthday. We had a large group and they were all staying for 3 nights - but I said I would do 1!! When you finally arrive at the end of the earth, ie Malaekahana, you have to check in at the front desk (note: call ahead an snake reservations, the place was pretty full and I heard a couple get turned away.) the front desk lady will give you the code to the gate, a map to your site, and any other info you may need. The map is slightly confusing since it's a narrow feisty dirt road. Once I finally found our site I explored my 1 night abode which had been set up already by a friend. We had about 3 tents on our site with sone other friends scattered around. There was an old grill there but bring charcoal. We bbqed up some burgers and let the fun begin. Our site was about 25ft away from the ocean. Even this princess thought it was amazing. They do have hot showers available as well as bathrooms and scattered spot-a-pots but I did not partake in the hot showers... Only staying for one night I showered at home the next day. They offer a wood service for your camp fire, you just need to call and order and they deliver to your site. I believe it was $20ish. There is also a picnic table at almost every site but ours was not very sturdy and almost collapsed mid game of Apples to Apples. This was a good first experience of camping for me, even thinking of going back soon. The most amazing part of the whole experience was looking up at night and realizing that there are soooooooo many stars! I have never witnessed anything like this and even saw my first shooting star!!!!! Light pollution is a b**tch!! Bring a good cooler with LOTS of ice- after all it is still Hawaii and it's hot. Your food and bevs will get warm. Also stow away your food at night or the loud clucking chickens will enjoy it for you!!! Enjoy!!! read more

My fam and I have been coming to these campgrounds for over 20 years. Although the beach is the same, the cottages are all different. For the last 2-3 years, we've reserved the "plantation hale", which includes 2 rooms: a queen bed in one and a bunk bed in the main entryway. The cottage also includes electricity and a toilet. There is no sink inside of the cottage however, so you do need to go outside to one of the many showers or outdoor faucets to watch your hands. Main thing I want to give props to these guys for their the recent thefts. This year, I noticed a lot bigger security presence. I feel bad that a lot of people had their valuables ripped off, but credit given to Malaekahana for trying to do something about it. We'll be back again... read more

Pros: -Your own private beach with drop dead gorgeous sunrises. -Choice of tent camping, yurts, or cabins. -Incredible rates. -Friendly owners. -Quiet. -Warm outdoor shower. -Chickens and cats roaming freely. It's like a sandy farm. Cons: -Gate locks at 7pm- that's super early. If it were 9pm, I'd be happy. But the gate is what makes it a private, secluded area. After closing, though, you have to walk to your site which can be tricky in the dark. -The yurts, and as observed from a distance, some of the cabins, are not kept up. Stayed in a yurt and we were surrounded with bugs. Overall, so satisfied, I just know to tent it next time. And next time I don't have to do any touristy things since I did that the first 2 times. So taking it easy in the north end is beckoning me. read more

The restrooms and showers are very clean and although the strict 7pm gate closing can be annoying, it's good peace of mind knowing that the camp grounds are super safe. This is heaven on earth for camping. The campground is very spread out and you will have privacy. The beach can become windy so prepare other a jacket, yes, even in Hawaii a jacket is a good idea. The cats and roosters will be a good wild life viewing event. My bf was recommended the place by a coworker when she knew I was coming to visit. He kept calling like quite often trying to reach them, but it was understandable that they wouldn't be free because he was really last minute. Luckily, it the end we got reservations for 2 nights in an eco-duplex! When you arrive there, there was no one at reception but they leave your keys and a map with a gate code, but they are pretty strict about the gate closing at 7!! So make sure you are back before curfew, haha. I didn't really know what to expect for eco-duplex, but it was really nice. It felt like our own little house. He kept calling it our home! Cute. It was a duplex and it was well equipped with running hot water, an outdoor(hot) shower, own private bathroom, kitchenette with small stove top burner thing, and mini fridge, also a full bed and couch that pulled out into a bed. It was really fancy for camping. There were other legit campers around in grass shacks and tents and compared to us were roughing it. I would totally rough it if I knew how beautiful the beach and the area was going to be. Just steps away, we walked to the beach in the morning and it was so secluded and quiet and just really beautiful. I can see why all you would need is a tent good company and good weather. Make sure to like everyone said to bring everything that you think that you would need- the eco-duplex doesn't have anything. So we brought our dinner(marinated teriyaki fish) that we were going to make, rice cooker, veggies, etc, tsunami popcorn, gummi bears......... And we really whipped up a good healthy meal for the most part. The only problem is we completely forgot a pan! Don't forget a pan!! We were contemplating using foil and trying to cook it that way but we gave in and bought a cheap pan at Tamura's (10$)down the road. There is also Foodland(had a pan but was like 20$) close by which we frequented for fun and to get more beverages! Overall, I would totally recommend this place and I feel so lucky to have gotten to go here and experience it! read more

Had a great stay here. We got the larger cabin with two queen size bunks and indoor toilet. Cabin was next to the beach. The beach was great and sunrise was worth getting up early. We had a couple days of strong wind and noticed some tent campers had issues. We loved the sound from inside our cabin. What a great place, we will be back. read more

I came here for my niece's birthday party and had a great time. I can't say that the cabins here would rival any top notch resort hotel; however, this place is situated in a private beach with a view of perfection. What a great place to really chill and have a low key staycation or a Hawaiian vacation at an affordable price. Cabins are really run down, but that is the experience of it all (although I didn't really camp here). You do have options of renting out cabins or just roughing it with tents. Either or I'm sure the experience will be awesome. 4-star rating based on the overall views, location, beach, and privacy (if you're at cabin 6 or 7). read more

Malaekahana Beach Campground - Campgrounds Near Me - Kahuku, Hawaii

1st note to visitors: GO check it out before you book your stay there. The pictures are very misleading and not true. 2nd note: the camp sites are very small and too close to the site next to you. My wife and I made the mistake of booking a weekend there and then going to look at the place. What we saw was drunks driving around crazy, kids running on the road, looked nothing like the pictures and trash everywhere. So we cancelled our reservation and still charged us a cancellation fee which they bullied us into. The place is a dump and the lady in the office was rude and uninforative. And her girlfriend wouldn't leave or offer us her chair when we went in to talk to her. DONT STAY HERE. read more

Avoid at all costs. Not a safe place. I planned a three night stay. After one night I was run out. My campsite (all I left was a tent) was trashed. Fly and stakes stolen. Soda poured on the tent. I got the hell out. The water at the beach is nice. Beach is very dirty. Lost of trash. Facilities are poor as others have stated. Tourists beware!!!! No park rangers or LEOs. There are two types of people in this world: ones that enjoys the outdoors and ones that don't. Unfortunately, for the ones that don't, the word "camping" conjures a nightmare in their minds. Malaekahana Beach Campground is my wife and I's campground of choice. We love the privately run yet effective areas. Almost every site is just a short walk to the restrooms and showers. The area is quite safe, especially during the night. Weather can be hairy here once in a while, especially, if you have a tent that doesn't do too well with heavy wind. There is a small store in the front near the entrance that sells some necessities including firewood if needed. There is also a food truck selling food, especially coffee, if needed. This is nice, especially since on Sunday's there isn't anywhere open in the area. read more
