Updating my review because I have now officially stayed in the yurts, cabins, and the updated hales. All have their pros and cons, but overall each experience is 5-stars. Starting off with the cheapest option, the cabins. Price range from $220-$250 a night. There is one full-sized bed and two separate bunk beds which accommodate up to 6 people. There's AC, mini fridge, microwave, and bathroom inside with toilet and shower. Con is that there is no lanai with grill. The Yurts also accommodate 6 people and go for $250-$300 a night, with Kama'aina saving an extra 10% Monday-Thursday from Sept.-April. There are 2 sets of bunk beds, a microwave, grill, and power strips inside to charge all of your devices etc. My favorite part of the Yurt is the lanai with picnic table, grill, and beautiful views of the ocean with direct access to the beach. Con is that the toilet and showers are located outdoors. But who doesn't love a beach shower? The most expensive are the Hale units which are newly renovated and go for $360-$400 a night and accommodate up to 5 people with a queen bed and 2 bunk beds. There's 2 AC units, full sized kitchen, indoor bathroom, and a rooftop area with panoramic views of the mountains and ocean. This is the most luxurious stay with the only real con being further away from the ocean (maybe 500 feet from the beach). read more

Kinda one of the only places you can rent with cabin/container/yurt (instead of tent camping) without military ID on the north shore so we gave it a shot. It's on the most western side of the north shore with no stores within 15 minutes from camp. There is a state park gate that opens and closes daily so be sure to pay attention to that sign so you don't get locked in or out! We stayed in a container for 3 nights and 4 days ( checking Monday and checkout Thursday) and even with kama'aina rates, was still almost $400 per night! It had very good AC (3 units total for the container, one in each bedroom plus on in the kitchen / central area). There is no living area - we all setup our chairs on the deck at the door and added our easy up for shade so we could hangout together. While the inside of the container was nice and newly remodeled, it didn't have any hot water for showers and only had a tiny microwave (no oven, stove or hot plate) which left us only able to prepare food on the grill. The grill we got didn't work and we thought it was just the propane so we called the office and asked for more and once they finally brought it, the grill still didn't work. Since there wasn't any guests staying in the other container next to us, we swapped grills to see if that would work and it at least lit. Unfortunately it took 2 hours to just cook bacon on it! So needless to say, it was a little rough at mealtimes. The rooftop lanai was awesome however there wasn't zero shade - no umbrellas and no trees... so it was way too hot to go up there except to try and enjoy the sunsets. While the container itself isn't beachfront, it's second row and not even a road in between so it's easy access to walk down. Some of the beach areas were very rocky and some what a lot more sand. There were also areas where the land was eroding so sand was sinking along with the beachside embankments so be careful! The water can also be rough around the area. Good for fishing in the evening. There are dogs allowed onsite and at the containers but not on the beach. Note they cannot be left leashed and unattended. They advertised having doggie stations but there weren't any onsite. Remember this is an active YMCA camp so if you're there during the week you will see and hear a lot of kids doing activities around the site. This is not a tourist resort so don't expect peace and quiet! Sunsets were beautiful. We made lots of memories. read more

Such a great venue to spend the summer with a large group of teenagers or young adults! Perfect for disconnecting from social media, reconnecting with others, and making tons of memories with family and friends! Cabins available for rent. They present as warm and cozy. Lots of huge meeting spaces, both indoors and outdoors. Unfortunately for people like me who are deathly afraid of heights I was unable to skip the portion of climbing up high and zip lining. Including my pregnant sister who does not like camping but was forced to come because her sister (me) loves camping.... No one bothered us, we had our privacy, we had the beach to ourselves, the beds were not bad, the lanai was the best, everything we needed was provided (towels, blankets, mini fridge, grill, kitchen utensil, plastic plates, forks and spoons, coffee maker, fan, and toilet paper. I don't consider myself a "camp" kind of person, and this place sort of confirmed that. That said, my son (7yo) generally had a good time on a recent 3-day/2-night field trip up here, but I don't know that I would send him for an overnight camp here - at least not until he's a bit older. POSITIVES: - Cabins. I didn't see too many creepy crawlies (more than one would expect for a camp) - a few large-ish ants in the cabin, but nothing dodgy in the bunks. They were as comfortable as you would think a cabin mattress would be. A particularly nice touch was electrical outlets at the head of each bunk - especially for grownups with devices to charge. Toilet and shower in the cabin, plus a shower/bathroom house in the middle. - Swimming pool. The first day, they abandoned the swim test and just put all the kids in life vests. My son is not a strong swimmer, and this eased my mind, plus made it more equitable so that the weaker swimmers didn't feel self-conscious about it. -The staff. Most were friendly and energetic and good with kids. Special shout-out to Emma, who my son remembered days later by name and said he liked. They kept our kids engaged, though they did have a lot of chaperones at the ready to help. Kitchen staff were also welcoming and friendly and made more coffee for the grownups when we drained the carafe. - Archery. Emma also took all appropriate safety precautions seriously at the archery range and it was a highlight of my son's camp experience. I was surprised they didn't have arm guards for us, but we didn't wind up with any string slaps. - Location. It's beautiful and felt very much a world away from Honolulu. We had glorious weather and loved our sunset time on the beach before the campfire night. (FYI, mobile signal is nearly nonexistent. There is wi-fi near the main buildings but nothing in the cabins especially if you're close to the mountains - I actually had the best mobile coverage on the beach) NEGATIVES: - The food. I tried to be gracious, but oh dear it was bad. Family-style, so only one main/side/veg/sweet, though if you had dietary restrictions, there were options for you (though they were pretty grim). At breakfast, a couple cereal choices as alternatives to the hot breakfast would have been very much appreciated. Granted, our group was the only one there at the time, and I understand that options cost money, but there also seemed to be a ton of food waste that could have been prevented with either choices or a buffet. Apparently there was a salad bar in the past, but that could have been a COVID-era sacrifice or else a function of our group numbers. Anyhow, my kid is average small-kid-kine picky and he was HANGRY a few times during camp because he didn't want to eat what was served. Thankfully we had brought some snacks with us. Something like pizza, cookout food (hot dogs/hamburgers), sandwiches could have gone a long way toward guaranteeing these kiddos were fueled for their days. - Limited activities. Our kids were crazy over the gaga ball, and they wound up doing that a lot. They had "Malama 'Aina" on the schedule, which I figured would be something like a beach cleanup or ecology lesson outdoors. It wound up being more like gaga ball flavored with a little bit of education on invasive species. Cool application, but when the camp is surrounded by nature, I felt like that could have been leveraged better. Same for an activity on the last morning that I wasn't there for. Maybe that's a function of reduced experiences coming off COVID restrictions? Hard to say, but it didn't feel like things were completely back to what they might have been pre-pandemic. They also had a scavenger hunt scheduled late in the evening which had kids running around everywhere in the dark which didn't seem safe and would have been better earlier in the day. - First aid response. My kid got knocked down during a game and wound up with a scraped knee and elbow. I get it, keiki get scrapes, but he came to me in tears and I had to go seek out someone for bandaids and some neosporin while the counselor continued on with the activity. If I hadn't been there, would he have gotten better attention? - Chaperone downtime. We had a LOT of grownups (nearly a 1:1 ratio) for our group, and I wish I had known ahead of time that there would be a decent amount of down time for the adults while the focus was on the kids' activities and games and I would have brought something to do or read. Or a parallel activity for adults might have been nice. Overall, we had a good (not excellent) school trip experience. Maybe I'm an over-protective mama bear, but I'd have a few reservations sending my particular keiki to an overnight summer camp week any time soon. read more

The last time I went to this camp was when I was about 10 years old. A lot has changed here. It's located far far away in North Shore side kind of where Kaena point (the other side) is. This camping adventure was organized by my supervisor and me as the assistant. We were planning this summer camping adventure for children of all ages. We came here to scope the place. After comparing this camp with other camps, YMCA is the best deal on the island for a big group. The director was very cooperative with us. They were able to provide us with bus transportation. The package deal includes a couple of hours of activities coordinated by the YMCA leaders/volunteers. It teaches teamwork, risk-taking, bravery, and leadership. Very age appropriate and the kids loved it. At night we can do a bonfire but bring your own smore ingredients. It's near the beach also. Very beautiful! It includes breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The meal was pretty good. Family style but can ask for more. The cabins were decent and clean. Beware of mosquitoes. It's mostly bunk beds. The bathroom was pretty clean. Can't expect too much at a campsite. It was a fun expereince! Parking available. Don't forget sunscreen! It's really hot. You can also hike to Kaena point from there. read more

This past Veterans Day weekend the 107th ASUH senate and I had the pleasure of staying over at Camp Erdman. It was my first time there and honestly it was really nice being away from town and just being so far out near the ocean. It really puts you in that summer camp feel, since there were literal cabins, children, as well as fun activities to help bring you and your squad together as a team. The food was fun and homey, with lunch being grilled cheese and tomato soup; dinner being chicken and rice; and breakfast being waffles and sausage links. The cabins were..humbling. There were bunk beds and it can get a little stuffy in them but again, it's nice to experience something different. We stayed in the Cole family cabin, which is the bigger cabin. Bunk beds, sandy floors, hot in the day but cooler in the night. Nevertheless, the cabins are where the true bonding happened. As well as the beach right behind the cabins. And the odyssey. If you can do the odyssey--as an individual and as an individual alongside others--you can do ANYTHING. My body is still recovering from having to maneuver my way through the thin wires up 40+ feet in the air. Would I do it again? Sure. Am I okay for now because I already did it? You bet. I was really looking forward for my 11 y.o. boy to get an awesome experience at YMCA Camp Erdman during Session #2, 2023. But, unfortunately, what he got was quite the opposite: 1. Bullying. My kid was visibly depressed when we were picking him up on the last day from the camp. He refused to talk about the camp, or answer any questions, while on the camp grounds or when we started driving back home. Eventually, half an hour later into the ride he started crying. The only explanation we could get out of him, through the tears, was that ALL of the kids in his cabin were taunting him, calling names, inventing nicknames and doing whatever possible to make him miserable. My kid is way above average size in relation to his peers and crying is not a usual routine. However, I guess when you get stuck in a cabin with 10 other boys bullying you for a week then the attitude will change. I asked whether anyone else got the same treatment and the answer was no. There were about 10 kids in his cabin and 2 "counselors" - a couple of ~18y.o. guys to watch after them. HERE IS A BIG QUESTION TO MANAGEMENT: what were your "counselors", doing during the week? Was it that hard to spot this kind of bullying? I would not bother to write any review at all regarding the rest of the points, which are insignificant and pale in comparison with bullying. 2. Neglected communication. Phones were prohibited but the Parent's Handbook promised email communication: "To send letters to your camper, email cmail@ymcahonolulu.org with camper's name and cabin number in the subject line. Emails are printed and given to campers Mon-Thu after lunch." I emailed by boy twice during the week asking whether he had any issues, and if he needed the items he forgot to pack. He never got any emails and did not have a chance to respond. 3. "Counselors" eating snacks in front of kids. Food was fine but there were no in-between snacks. That would not be a complain if the "counselors" were not eating snacks in front of kids all the time, while telling them that snack are prohibited in the cabin. 4. Disgusting Bathrooms. I had a chance to visit the bathroom closest to cabin #29 while picking up my kid. My kid strongly advised me from going there because it was "disgusting"... I've seen a lot of public bathrooms on the island and this one was the worst without exaggeration. Guys, with such number of stuff that's a shame. If you are so busy then make the kids do the work. That's how you teach to respect the place. But to let it be in that condition... 5. No hiking or ocean activities. The camp is located on beautiful grounds. But, per my kid, there was no hiking or ocean activities. I understand it might be a liability. But then again, with 1:5 staff to kids ratio... read more

My son is at the Camp as we speak... but they are returning today, after one night of their planned 2 night stay. The reason? BED BUGS! I'm sorry for having to leave this review on only one aspect of their stay, but it's a pretty serious thing. You would think that when children are involved, they would take the effort to check living quarters before they arrive... unless they did try and failed to eradicate them, but chose not to tell because they were afraid of losing revenue. I really feel bad for the kids as this was supposed to be the "make up" days as their original dates were postponed due to the Hurricane Lane scare. read more

So I went to Camp Erdman with the 5th graders of Likelike Elementary. We picked the 3 days 2 night package for maximum fun and sun on Oahu's north west shore. It was a nice hour long bus ride that started in urban Kalihi and passed through Aiea, Pearl City, Waipahu, Mililani, Wahiawa and out to Camp Erdman. Got to camp and unloaded the bus. Then we sent the kids to the TIR (theatre in the round) and went to teacher orientation. We were given cabin keys and all the formalities were touched on by Sarah Miller. Informative and brief, we got to walk around camp while the camp counselors introduced themselves to the kids. We eventually got to unpack and this is the view from the back of the cabins! http://tinyurl.com/6afldcv The curriculum chosen for this group of kids included the classes archery, beach ecology, the beast, mauka hike, group challenge 1 and 2, swimming, and international games. The curriculum was quite good and for the most part engaged and interested the kids throughout the camp. When asked, the many of the students loved the hike and listed it as their favorite activity. Second was archery. I must say much of the programs are well planned and well executed. Students really benefit from the enthusiasm of camp instructors. We go to camp erdman once a year and the prices keep going up and the service keeps getting worst. To top that off, the food is terrible and the cabins are still in poor condition. In our cabin, our window had a hole where you could actually climb through and steal belongings. The toilets we're brown on the inside and the facility bathroom by the theater round smelled like urine. Camp fire acts were better in years past but that's the only positive I can mention. Also, upstairs second floor cafeteria there is a big safety hazard. The rail for that level is cracked and shaking. It looks like it will fall off soon. Someone could get seriously hurt. No caution tape or sign warning us of the cracked loose rail upstairs. read more

As an adult, you would NEVER think you would EVER be back at camp. Right? Flash forward 31 years later, I find myself back at Camp Erdman asking myself what on earth has brought me back. Then I remember, I teach 6th grade and it's camp time for them. The hazards of being an educator. Camp Erdman is located between Waialua and Kaena Point. The camp has beachfront and mountainside cabins, usually holding 16 people with 8 bunks in a cabin (at least the ones that our school occupied). Each bunk bed had a padded "mattress". We were told to either bring a twin size sheet & blanket or a. sleeping bag. Each cabin had a separate room for a shower and one for the toilet. There was a larger building that was located outside of our cabins that had a women's and men's toilets (2), sinks (2) and showers (4). This building was very clean. I opted to shower there. I heard too many horror stories about bugs crawling up & out of drains. This seemed safer. There was no shortage of things to do at camp! There were Gaga Ball pits in almost every area of camp. There was a large pen that I was told was for human foosball! (My group didn't get to do It, but some of my students did & loved it!) The HUMUGOUS Alpine tower and swing looms in the distance. It seemed to excite and terrify every student. There is a ropes course, but we didn't go on it. (Thank goodness!) We got to try out archery - awesome! I even got a real nasty bruise, but whatever. I had hit the target. We learned about ocean trash and how important it is to clean up the beach. We even got in some STEM time by having an egg drop competition! The majority of our activities were team builders. We were able to pick the activities and the duration of them. The whole atmosphere of the Camp was great. Our camp leaders were FANTASTIC! They knew exactly how to handle grouchy kids, kids who were apprehensive, exasperated teachers... you get the picture. Their excitement levels were ridiculously high and you could not help but smile at their antics. The entire time were there, I had no real complaints. It rained. It was cold. My cabin was haunted. But the kids. The fact that they never wanted to leave said it all. Even thought I'll be forced to be back, I definitely will not mind it. (You have to make a $5/ person donation to get in) Also, I really wish I was still a kid and could go to YMCA summer camp- you can't beat the location, off the beaten path in a beautiful beach front setting. So the last time I came to Camp Erdman was 10 years ago when I was a 7th grader & not much has changed. Except instead of being a student I was a chaperone for a 124 7th graders. Let me warn you, I am not a camper. My camping is staying at a beach house haha. The grounds & facilities were kept fairly clean. The staff tried really hard to engage the students but at some points they tried a little too hard. The students enjoyed the activities but some were geared more towards younger students & they seemed to get bored. The students really loved The Odyssey because it challenged them mentally & physically. It also gave them many opportunities to learn to work together. The food was okay, the salad bar really saved me during lunch & dinner. During our stay we had things such as waffles, Portuguese sausage, French toast, yogurt, granola and cereal for breakfast. For lunch we had sandwiches & chips. For dinner we had sweet & sour pork & something else that I can't seem to remember. The cabins seemed a lot smaller than I remembered but fit 16 students & had 2 bathrooms with a toilet & shower. Luckily there weren't too many creepy crawlers. We had the students wipe down their mattresses with Clorox wipes. I was extra cautious so I cut open a big trash bag & covered my mattress before putting down my sleeping bag. My review is more for the site itself, not the facility. I came here because it was used in the filming of LOST - this is The Other's Camp - so I wanted to take some pictures. Everyone was really nice. You need to check in at the front desk when you arrive and they ask for a $5 donation per person. Then they give you a brochure and point you in the direction of the LOST area (although it's pretty obvious when you see it - very iconic!) If you're a LOST fan, this is a must see spot! read more

Today was family open camp day, first off as a former employee I found it looking very nice , but super super super poorly run. 1- These little children were trying to climb on a high ropes course which they should have opened the low ropes course for, because of this the lines were very long and super slow for everyone. 2- After waiting for 2 hours my children were super excited about trying the ropes they ended the line so my children were not able to try it out. End result: stick to school groups because those they do pretty well and NO! I would not recommend going back for family camp or any other camp if this is how they run events. Most people who grew up on Oahu have spent at least one night at Camp Erdman, most likely with a school group. Student leadership camps, band/orchestra camps, and graduating class camps are often held here. Why it's a good place to have a student camp: Located in the extreme northwest of the island near the end of a very long road, there's no escape and there's nothing around that a student would want to escape to. Other students not enrolled in camp would have to put in a lot of time and use up lots of gas money to drive all the way to Erdman to crash camp. There's several meeting rooms to have arts & crafts, or for music camps - rehearsals and sectionals. Bring clothespins to hold your music as some areas are open air. Year-round "modified" public school schedules have created a problem for some parents, as now they have to find supervised activities for their child to participate in during "Intersessions" (very long fall, winter, and spring breaks). Here's an option that might work for families: Intersession Camps at Camp Erdman. What a great idea! Cart your kids off to camp so you don't have to worry about them watching TV (or doing something worse!) for 7 hours straight, daily, for 2 weeks. Tell your kids it might not be so bad! Swim time and the ropes course can be fun! You could even bring your whole family to camp! Not sure if I would want to, though. The food I've had at Camp Erdman brings back bad memories of school lunch. Here's an example of an Erdman lunch menu: Chicken patty on white bun, pre-cut mixed iceberg lettuce salad with ranch dressing, plain Ruffles potato chips, canned pineapple chunks, and fruit punch. Ketchup, mustard, and mayo packages available. I would probably only do a Family Camp if I were visiting from off-island and if there was time allotted for driving my family into other areas of the North Shore. Haleiwa is about 20-30 minutes away. Summer camp is another option. I think it's cool that they have thematic camps: horsemanship, technology, English as a Second Language, mountain climbing, etc. I would totally send my kids to Erdman for a specialty camp. I love love his place!!! My kids went to OPC camp for 6 days. I have a 15 & 13 year old So I new they were going to have s blast. The camp grounds were kept very clean an tidy The counselers where amazing an very mature!! I was able to see pictures of my kids on shutterfly which I thought was pretty cool!! When camp was over my kids couldn't stop talking the whole way home on how much fun they had. Wind blowing, sun beaming, and waves pounding, this is the Best camp on the island, great for the entire family.

Another fantastic year at July 4th Family Camp is over. We already have our cabin reserved for next year. Saturday night dinner this year was prime rib! We also had "smash burger" for lunch, reminiscent of "Smash Cow" at the old Barney's Burgerhouse in Ewa Beach. read more

If I could put negative starts on this review, I would. Two of my children went to the last session of Camp Erdman and while one had a "decent" time there, it was probably one of the worst experiences of my child's life for the other. My 12-year-old son, whom I had sent to camp hoping for a nice experience of community, endured bullying from the moment we left from dropping him off. I even paid extra for the mental wellness session in hopes to help build his confidence. Besides the obvious unsanitary conditions of the camp and restroom facilities, and the inability to feed and monitor the amounts of food that seemed to be barely passing as edible, my son had to endure constant hatred from the get-go from the other campers in his age group. Of course, I understand that children will be children and these things cannot be caught every time, but the fact that in the entire week not a single counselor noticed or stopped any of this behavior is absolutely unacceptable. When my son tried to say hello or meet new friends he was greeted with a "shut up". Apparently, another child followed him around calling him gay and spreading this rumor to others in the camp. My child is not gay, but God forbid another child who IS that comes into this unaccepting environment. I entrusted the YMCA with my child's wellbeing, and he returned more broken than when I left him there. Why on earth this was allowed to happen and continue is beyond me. Who knows how many other children had to endure this type of treatment without being able to phone a parent? Campers should have the ability to phone a parent at least every other day. We don't know these counselors and all it takes is one awful thing to happen to a child (even worse than what my child went through) to change the course of their lives. I am extremely disappointed in the YMCA. read more

The staff is very helpful. Especially for the summer camp. My child really wanted to attend but it was too costly for me at first but with the help of financial aid and Mandy MacMahan i was able to sign her up. Mandy is awesome, she always responds in a timely manner and I felt she did the best she could to help me she never made me feel like i was bugging her. Ho I remember going here ever since small kid time! If you are born and raised in Hawaii, you know what I am talking about! If you have not come to Camp Erdman then you are not born and raised in Hawaii and you are not local! Nah juss jokes! Location All the way down in Mokuleia/Waialua side! It is pretty easy to drive to unless there is traffic. Just head towards North Shore side specifically down Waialua then you are pretty there. You will also pass another camp site in Mokuleia which is before Camp Erdman. The Camp I remember the camp cabins were hella ghetto way back in the day but they cleaned them up! If you can get the makai side cabins, those ones are pretty good because it is so close to the camp fires and the beach! The family cabins are pretty big too! The restrooms are decent and all of the cabins are pretty much a decent walking distance from everything. The Erdman In regards to the Camp Erdman infrastructure overall, I feel that it has a lot of good resources to utilize. I've gone here mostly for leadership camps and stuff so there are a lot of areas that you can use to meet and use for assembly meetings and stuff. The cafeteria is on the second floor so you will have to walk up some stairs to get to it. The food is pretty good I would say. They have coffee and tea available all day if you want. (It is located behind the cafeteria). It is all family style so when it comes time to eat you have to set everything yourself (it's part of the camp experience!). They will always have cereal and fruit available for breakfast and salad choices for lunch. You also have to break down everything and take the dishes to the kitchen after you are done eating. They have some strict times for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. They have a swimming pool, basketball court, volleyballs, etc. if you want some physical activity. I believe they also have some leadership team building types of activities that you can inquire about. Overall, Camp Erdman is just really great in regards to getting away for the weekend if you want a more out of town kind of experience for both small groups or large groups! read more

Very helpful staff, went above and beyond to be helpful. Sent my little brother here for surf camp and he had a blast. The counselors were awesome, and his experience was one that he will look back on fondly. We were a little worried when dropping him off, since we didn't know if it was going to be that good, but Camp Erdman proved themselves to be a great summer camp. read more

My daughter almost died during swimming test. The lifeguard just watched her while she struggled gasping for air. This is her first time camping here and she just had the worst experience when it's supposed to be a fun experience. They are rude! read more

Sent my child to Camp Erdman for the first time this year. She had a blast! I especially like that they don't allow cell phones because my daughter was actually engaged and got involved with the activities like kids should. I was a little bit nervous that I would not be able to talk to her for 5 days but the pictures that were posted allowed me to see that my daughter was always having fun with a huge smile on her face! I am really glad she got to attend camp this year and when she came home, she said, "Mom, you were right about me having fun at camp, I loved it and I am definitely going back next year!" With all the technology today, seems like kids can be immersed in their phones, computers, tv, electronics, etc. I am glad she had the opportunity to actually be a kid, make friends, play games, swim, camp, attend fun activities and learn.
