I can't believe the couple of bad reviews previously. My only guess is that because the company has several teams of employees, perhaps not all of them are as great as the employees who helped us. However, here is my review: We were moving on a Wednesday after purchasing a new house, and selling our townhouse. A week or two prior we scheduled with Island Movers. They sent someone out to determine how much it would cost. I will say that Island Movers appeared to be very professional and courteous. However, our moving plans switched from Wednesday to Friday, and I had to cancel with Island Movers as they were not available with just two days notice. I completely understand. Thankfully our realtor contacted Johnny the Mover who was able to accommodate us on a day's notice (realtor called them on Thursday for the move on Friday). I really like the fact that they gave us a direct quote over the phone (a price per hour) without having to inspect the residence. On Friday, Josh and Sam came to our house on-time, which was very important for our tight schedule. They were both respectful and courteous throughout the day.... just true professionals. Best of all, after loading and unpacking dozens of boxes and bulky items, the only damage was one broken wine glass.... out of dozens of glass and fragile items. That is impressive in my opinion, especially since the glass broke on the lengthy stem... which probably could have been prevented if we packed it better. I also found their integrity impressive. Specifically, when Josh was about to move our desk, he called me over to point out some damage on the back of the desk which I had done previously. That really impressed me that he would take the time to tell me that. Also, contrary to what a previous post indicated, Josh and Sam did not ask us for food or drinks; however, we offered both, as is the local and polite thing to do. Most importantly, the price we paid was at least $150 to $200 less than what Island Movers quoted. I hope to never move again... or at least in the near future; however, if we do, I will definitely use this company again and specifically ask for Josh and Sam. read more

I called them very last minute and luckily they had a team available to help me move same day. The job included emptying a Matson container and moving the items into the garage. The garage was not completely empty, and they were able to fit my items into the garage snugly and organized. The three men working the job (Kimo, Kainoa, and Logan) worked very efficiently and professionally. We did have a miscommunication about an item I mistakenly thought they misplaced, and during that time of disagreement, they still worked professionally and carefully. We did eventually get over my mistake, and in the end I'd use them again for a move and recommend them to anyone looking for a moving company! read more

We just moved from Honolulu to windward side and used Johnny the mover. We received their info from a neighbor who told us they did a great job with their move. They were responsive, right on time, and very respectful. All 3 of our movers were kind and efficient. They took good care of our things and asked us where we wanted everything placed and made sure all was in order before they left. I've never used movers on Oahu but the prices were comparable with what I've paid on the mainland. I'd definitely recommend and use again! read more

I had contacted Johnny the mover to help assist with a move from Kailua to a storage unit in Ewa Beach to temporarily store our house before our military move. When I had made the appointment I had talked to a gentleman named Marcus who at the time seemed very nice but I would soon mistake my judgement on the man. In the moving prep I was informed that I could supply boxes, tape, etc. if I choose or they would supply it. I was able to get some supplies from a friend which I thought would help. As the packing progressed we quickly ran out of packing paper and that is when I was informed that Johnny the Movers did not supply any packing paper JUST BOXES AND TAPE. I had to removed myself from the room as I watched them wrap my $350 Le Creuset pots and various serving platters in PAPER TOWELS. When I was in my guest bedroom watching the movers pack up various items I witnessed 2 of the movers place a glass shadow box at the bottom follow by a printer (weighing 25 lbs) on top of it. When I asked them if they would rearrange the items they acted as if I was inconveniencing them terribly. Finally the house was in the back of the truck and it was time to drive to Ewa Beach. I had to meet them there to help them gain access. I arrived the the storage unit and waited an extra 45 mins for the truck to arrive (mind you I am paying hourly for these wonderful "movers"). The storage unit is filled and everyone is exhausted. The movers were so out of it they almost let me walk away without even paying for the bill, luckily I am a painfully honest person and informed them they still haven't charged me for their services. After everything was completed I called Marcus to ask what the damage policy was and I had explained my situation that the house would sit in a storage until we moved off island. Well Marcus couldn't understand that we would not be able to discover any damages due to the fact that we wouldn't be unpacking any boxes while sitting in storage then proceeded to accuse me of breaking all my personal belongings and blaming Jonny the mover for the damages! Marcus had finally agreed to have me contact the company once we did have our military move and they would have a manager on site come to supervise the move Incase there were any damages. When we called the next day to follow up Marcus had informed my husband hat nobody would be coming to supervise and that it was not their responsibility since it was past 6 months, even though the storage unit has gone untouched since the day of the move. (And Marcus had given me his word that someone would be there to supervise) Overall I would say my experience with Johnny the Mover was extremely disappointing and pretty painful watching the "experienced movers" throw our belongings into boxes. I would never consider this company for business nor would I recommend it to anyone. read more

His wife, who was the dispatcher, even called the day before to confirm our move as well. Although we changed the dates and times a couple of times, they were very accommodating. Not only were they accommodating, they were the only company in Honolulu to call me back after I left a message for them. Follow through was excellent!!!!!!! In addition, their rates were awesome; $80/hr. When the two movers arrived on the day of our move, Landon and Chad were very friendly. They had great attitudes and were very efficient. These guys did such a great job that I created a yelp account just to share with y'all! I called on Wednesday to schedule a move for Saturday. Not only was it not a problem, but Marcus was able to reassure me that dropping a few things off at a friend's house wouldn't be a problem. On moving day, Sam, Landon, and the guys showed up on time and listened carefully as I explained the moving plan and needed stop on the way. They were professional and did a great job wrapping all my furniture for transport. They were just as kind and courteous at my friend's place. When unloading at my new place, they placed all furniture where requested and removed all wrappings. We needed to move down the street and hired Johnny the Mover to load, haul and unload our big stuff like the furniture, appliances and sports equipment. The crew arrived with a great attitude and went straight to work after a quick tour of the house to take in the scope. I liked Johnny's all in pricing with no extra fees. I paid the $20 extra for the unlimited shrink wrap (well worth it) and the guys even took off 1/2 an hour for their lunch break. I recently moved from a house to an apt. I have a heavy wooden stand up piano and I wasn't sure if it would fit in the elevator. I was scared that I might have to part with my piano, but luckily Johnny the Mover figured it out! They tilted the piano and got it up the elevator in perfect condition. No tuning required. This was the 2nd time I used Malama Moving Co. (I used them about 7 years ago when they were known as Johnny The Mover). Because of the previous terrific experience, I felt confident about using their services again. I was not disappointed! Kona, Ryan, and Curtis promptly showed up on time and listened carefully about which items I wanted to dispose of and which items I wanted moved to my new residence. They wrapped the furniture and took care to not damage either the furniture or the doorways when moving items out and into the new house. The move was accomplished quickly and skillfully! My wife called. They quoted $640. 3 guys, 2 hrs, 1 truck. They scheduled for Wednesday. I took off work (lost money). They cancelled at the very last second at the top of my driveway. Made my wife cry as we had 3 days left. Its a steep driveway and It was raining... I get that. They decided to reschedule for Friday. I took off again (lost more money). They showed up and started wrapping some things. The crew (John, Antonio?) were really cool and very apologetic for the inconveniences... especially when they were leaving. I guess the boss or supervisor showed up and told my wife they NEEDED a pick up truck to shuttle things up the driveway to the box truck. None of the other companies i talked to said they needed one. I told them about it just to make it easier on them. They said it would save me money without it. Well that was gonna be more money, than he wanted 1 more guy, that was more money. Wanted to wrap the furniture and prep it for tomorrow to wait and get pick up. Wife told me he said $1500. That broke our $800 budget. We asked him to "just take the big furniture, we'll get the rest." He told me "about $1000." I told him that was WAY over the quote! He apologized for not doing a site inspection first because of the driveway, for canceling last minute, and for all the confusion created by the fact... he didn't do his job right. I asked... "After all that, and you accept responsibility... Can you work something with us? You did kinda put us in this situation?" "No."... He had no remorse. So I sent him on his way. Made her cry again... As we have 1 more day. So after all that... SMART MOVE did it for $100 n hr. $50 for the truck. SO NOW YOU KNOW! read more

This was by far one of the worst moves I've ever experienced (and I have moved all over the world around 15-20x through military). For starters they were late. We had 3 guys, but felt more like 2, as one of them decided they were in zero rush (I literally watched him wrap my closed lid laundry basket in cling film for 4-5 minutes. Why?). And 2 out 3 decided they weren't going to wear masks in our home even though I'm 8 months pregnant and have a 18 month old. Seriously? There was nothing strategic or efficient about this move. They took a few boxes or single piece furniture items up/down the elevator one by one instead of loading everything up in front of the elevator (which is what is usually done) and making quicker rounds up/down. This alone caused what should've been a 3-4 hour job to take 6+ hours (mind you - we moved 50 feet away into another unit lol) and even after 6 hours our new apartment was in shambles. Much of our furniture was damaged/scratched (including a $1000 crib) and we had to junk a piece of furniture, which was broken in the process (which they tried to conceal). After 6 hours, and a completely stained white carpet later, I asked them all to leave with nothing rebuilt or put in the right place. Only for the slowest of the bunch to say that "we had more stuff then they expected" and that he would be the one to write up the bill, to which we responded "heck no". The same same gentleman also left his switch blade knife in my 18 months olds bedroom on a desk that never should've been there to begin with. All in all, total nightmare. I will credit the owner/manager as they did handle the situation as best as they could and I could tell they were genuinely sorry for the outcome but overall I just cannot in good faith recommend this moving company. read more

The best mover EVER! Before hiring them, I asked my friends to suggest a mover for my husband and I. We moved from Hawai'i Kai to KoOlina from a 2/2 condo. We had a very large sectional and 3-desks and book shelves. 2-large TVs and 23-sealed large boxes with all of our shoes and clothes. The 3-very polite men arrived as promised @8:00 AM. They immediately moved our Queen size bedroom set and everything with so much care. I was totally delighted! I can't say enough about these people.
