I had contacted Johnny the mover to help assist with a move from Kailua to a storage unit in Ewa Beach to temporarily store our house before our military move. When I had made the appointment I had talked to a gentleman named Marcus who at the time seemed very nice but I would soon mistake my judgement on the man. In the moving prep I was informed that I could supply boxes, tape, etc. if I choose or they would supply it. I was able to get some supplies from a friend which I thought would help. As the packing progressed we quickly ran out of packing paper and that is when I was informed that Johnny the Movers did not supply any packing paper JUST BOXES AND TAPE. I had to removed myself from the room as I watched them wrap my $350 Le Creuset pots and various serving platters in PAPER TOWELS. When I was in my guest bedroom watching the movers pack up various items I witnessed 2 of the movers place a glass shadow box at the bottom follow by a printer (weighing 25 lbs) on top of it. When I asked them if they would rearrange the items they acted as if I was inconveniencing them terribly. Finally the house was in the back of the truck and it was time to drive to Ewa Beach. I had to meet them there to help them gain access. I arrived the the storage unit and waited an extra 45 mins for the truck to arrive (mind you I am paying hourly for these wonderful "movers"). The storage unit is filled and everyone is exhausted. The movers were so out of it they almost let me walk away without even paying for the bill, luckily I am a painfully honest person and informed them they still haven't charged me for their services. After everything was completed I called Marcus to ask what the damage policy was and I had explained my situation that the house would sit in a storage until we moved off island. Well Marcus couldn't understand that we would not be able to discover any damages due to the fact that we wouldn't be unpacking any boxes while sitting in storage then proceeded to accuse me of breaking all my personal belongings and blaming Jonny the mover for the damages! Marcus had finally agreed to have me contact the company once we did have our military move and they would have a manager on site come to supervise the move Incase there were any damages. When we called the next day to follow up Marcus had informed my husband hat nobody would be coming to supervise and that it was not their responsibility since it was past 6 months, even though the storage unit has gone untouched since the day of the move. (And Marcus had given me his word that someone would be there to supervise) Overall I would say my experience with Johnny the Mover was extremely disappointing and pretty painful watching the "experienced movers" throw our belongings into boxes. I would never consider this company for business nor would I recommend it to anyone. read more

This was the 2nd time I used Malama Moving Co. (I used them about 7 years ago when they were known as Johnny The Mover). Because of the previous terrific experience, I felt confident about using their services again. I was not disappointed! Kona, Ryan, and Curtis promptly showed up on time and listened carefully about which items I wanted to dispose of and which items I wanted moved to my new residence. They wrapped the furniture and took care to not damage either the furniture or the doorways when moving items out and into the new house. The move was accomplished quickly and skillfully! All 3 guys were so polite and pleasant! It was such a pleasure to work with a professional company like this! And one more thing I have to mention; I will always be impressed by how they managed to fit that big moving truck into my tiny driveway without hitting or scraping any walls (Kona said he was the one who taught Curtis how to drive, LOL)! My wife called. They quoted $640. 3 guys, 2 hrs, 1 truck. They scheduled for Wednesday. I took off work (lost money). They cancelled at the very last second at the top of my driveway. Made my wife cry as we had 3 days left. Its a steep driveway and It was raining... I get that. They decided to reschedule for Friday. I took off again (lost more money). They showed up and started wrapping some things. The crew (John, Antonio?) were really cool and very apologetic for the inconveniences... especially when they were leaving. I guess the boss or supervisor showed up and told my wife they NEEDED a pick up truck to shuttle things up the driveway to the box truck. None of the other companies i talked to said they needed one. I told them about it just to make it easier on them. They said it would save me money without it. Well that was gonna be more money, than he wanted 1 more guy, that was more money. Wanted to wrap the furniture and prep it for tomorrow to wait and get pick up. Wife told me he said $1500. That broke our $800 budget. We asked him to "just take the big furniture, we'll get the rest." He told me "about $1000." I told him that was WAY over the quote! He apologized for not doing a site inspection first because of the driveway, for canceling last minute, and for all the confusion created by the fact... he didn't do his job right. I asked... "After all that, and you accept responsibility... Can you work something with us? You did kinda put us in this situation?" "No."... He had no remorse. So I sent him on his way. Made her cry again... The best mover EVER! Before hiring them, I asked my friends to suggest a mover for my husband and I. We moved from Hawai'i Kai to KoOlina from a 2/2 condo. We had a very large sectional and 3-desks and book shelves. 2-large TVs and 23-sealed large boxes with all of our shoes and clothes. The 3-very polite men arrived as promised @8:00 AM. They immediately moved our Queen size bedroom set and everything with so much care. I was totally delighted! I can't say enough about these people. This was by far one of the worst moves I've ever experienced (and I have moved all over the world around 15-20x through military). For starters they were late. We had 3 guys, but felt more like 2, as one of them decided they were in zero rush (I literally watched him wrap my closed lid laundry basket in cling film for 4-5 minutes. Why?). And 2 out 3 decided they weren't going to wear masks in our home even though I'm 8 months pregnant and have a 18 month old. Seriously? There was nothing strategic or efficient about this move. They took a few boxes or single piece furniture items up/down the elevator one by one instead of loading everything up in front of the elevator (which is what is usually done) and making quicker rounds up/down. This alone caused what should've been a 3-4 hour job to take 6+ hours (mind you - we moved 50 feet away into another unit lol) and even after 6 hours our new apartment was in shambles. Much of our furniture was damaged/scratched (including a $1000 crib) and we had to junk a piece of furniture, which was broken in the process (which they tried to conceal). After 6 hours, and a completely stained white carpet later, I asked them all to leave with nothing rebuilt or put in the right place. Only for the slowest of the bunch to say that "we had more stuff then they expected" and that he would be the one to write up the bill, to which we responded "heck no". The same same gentleman also left his switch blade knife in my 18 months olds bedroom on a desk that never should've been there to begin with. All in all, total nightmare. I will credit the owner/manager as they did handle the situation as best as they could and I could tell they were genuinely sorry for the outcome but overall I just cannot in good faith recommend this moving company. read more

2 guys for $120 two hour minimum or 3 guys for $160 one hour minimum but was discounted to $150. Moving from Harborside to Extra Storage Space 1414 Kalakaua... only moving one queen bed, box spring, dresser, two sofas, 2 desk/table, chairs, end tables x4, and 3 bags of linens. One guy stays at the truck, two guys moving and then later one stays behind unassembling the frame for the couch, which we caught them wasting time while the last three items to be moved. For 3 guys. It took over 3 1/2 hours for this to be completed. The frame for couch actually fits in the elevator.... then when all was finally delivered was charged shrink wrap fee of $40 plus tax...omg nearly $600 spent. Glad that we went back to check on them or else two of three guys which were medium built was doing not sure what, the skinnest guy was left with unassembling something that was unnecessary. Although they were nice but we felt that they took advantage of time and not communicating with us when we called them 3 times to see if all was good (no answer which is fine but if you have a question or need to know to take things off... ask first!!!). When going to the storage unit down at King Street, they take the very far left line with all the cars turning to Ward or Pi'ikoi etc... They had at least 10 minutes head start and we drove by them taking the middle lane... omg! It takes 10 minutes to drive from Harbor court to the Storage unit and 2.2 miles. This was 1:30p in the afternoon!!! Lite traffic with no road work on a Tuesday. We just think it could have been done in less than 2 hours and our mistake was we had to go to a few places to check for apartments for rent... that we left them alone trusting they would move the items and not just decide to unassemble items without asking!! Wasting time with the skinnest dude doing the unassembling (and probably the strongest one there), one guy moving (whatever items left and shrink wrapping not so sure since we were busy checking out places for rent) and the other manning the truck when it's a secured building with 2 security guards at the loading dock. Not pleased with the taking the time however if we had overlook the "unnecessary" stuff... maybe we will use them again but watch them like a segarent major... Even when we paid them, we still tip them individually to show them we were grateful but not happy about the wasted time at the unit... arghhh. read more

BEWARE: like other listings I have read about stolen property, I am sad to report that some of our articles were stolen. This past week I had the pleasure of working with this company. Seriously, if you're looking for a good, trustworthy, hardworking moving company, you can't go wrong with these guys. There's no way I could have moved by myself, and they took really, really great care of me and my belongings, and literally never stopped packing and moving for over 7 hours, didn't run into any walls, didn't break anything. Rena, the manager, is just one of the best people you'll meet, truly watching over my things as if they were her own (I even trusted her enough to leave and get tip money because these guys earned every penny), helping the guys and I pack and move even though she was just supposed to be supervising, giving me emotional and moral support all day, including telling me to stop, sit and talk because it was pretty physically overwhelming for me. Ati did a great job of being the team leader, managing the guys, keeping the truck organized, keeping things motivated and moving until it was done.... Avery was so good at understanding what would and wouldn't work, including (thankfully) not letting them park the truck into a tree, knowing where things should go at the new place, taping some of my (already) broken furniture so it arrived unharmed. Just really experienced, intelligent and thoughtful. He actually hand carried my computer on his lap so it wouldn't get damaged on the drive to the new place. Mana was also so hardworking, kind, honest. A former football player just back on the island, he worked tirelessly all day, and my place we were moving out of had only stairs, and I have some really heavy stuff! The team worked well together, really some of the hardest working, kindest, most trustworthy movers I've ever met. I had to help them because, well... it was a much bigger job than any of us anticipated, and even though we were all filthy, bone tired and hungry by the end of the day, it was like a camaraderie formed. They kept a positive attitude with me and each other, rushed to make it in time for my condo building's 4pm cutoff, but really it took until almost 6pm and they finished the job. Resa was like a protective mother looking out for all of us (including intervening with my crazy landlady on my behalf during the move out). She even got us all a meal of McD's and we sat and ate together, carried some of my things in her personal car that wouldn't fit in the truck, and after the move was done, she and Mana went and got a television still at the old house that hadn't fit on the truck. My first move with Malama moving co (DBA Johnny the movers.) Koa, Isaac and Hutch came to move me. I gave Isaac my bar-que grill and cover, the coal starter, wood stump and other odd and ins. Took them 3 1/2 hours . They were nice and pleasant. When they finished and I was paying the bill. Kia ask if I would give the guys a tip. I apologized for not having any more money to tip. koa said he understood. I had all my boxes unpacked in a week and I couldn't find my vintage candy dishes, three black ones that were my mothers. I called to ask for them back and got no answer. I tried again and no answer. Try again on Monday the block my number. Beware they steel from your box.... Two ride in front while one goes through the box's looking for items they can make money on While they are driving to your new place. Do not use this company unless you move your valuables yourself. I did but forgot about those candy dishes. They aren't worth much money wise but they were my moms and I want back. If not BBB in Hawaii will know what going on an the police. read more

July 2011 Johnny the Mover moved me from Kaneohe to town. They even did a side-delivery to deliver my bed I was giving to friends, and set it up! Wonderful service, the guys that did the move were great. Good conversation, helpful tips for packing/moving in the future, respectful, just an all-around awesome experience. April 2013 Johnny the Mover came an packed up my little house, stored my belongings overnight, and delivered my belongings to Young Brother's the next day. Same awesome service as back in 2011, though different men in the packing/moving party. Johnny the Mover has put together an incredible company to entrust the packing and moving of your personal belongings. Am hoping that they will open a branch on Kaua'i, as I know I'll move sometime over here. The 2013 crew advised that they were opening a branch in Hilo. One of the men that worked on my move is going over to Hilo. I recommend this company to anyone that has a move to make. Marcus was able to fit us in with only a week's notice, and he even called two days before to confirm our appointment, which was appreciated. This is one of the worst moving companies to hire. They bitch moan and groan about having an elevator in the building - even though they were told this upfront - and then they pout and pull a work stoppage all while I am paying them $ 160.00 hourly. This is the same company as Malama Movers. I wouldn't hire either one of these companies. I paid them over $ 1,000 to move my items from Salt Lake Blvd. to the Aloha Stadium.. BEWARE!! I was extremely dissatisfied with this company!! They hire independent contractors as drivers and have no control over them whatsoever. On my move from Kailua to Kailua, I had the worst experience ever with the driver "MARCUS" that showed up although the two workers were OK. The driver of the truck was extremely rude and I had to ended up calling the police after he started threatening me with physical violence 3/4 way into the move. He had showed up in a bad mood in the very beginning stating that the dispatcher had told him it was a small job and that "this was the type of job he would usually walk away from". This guy Marcus was a total basket case just waiting to explode that looked the part and absolutely did not belong in a service industry position of any type!! Kept talking about his kickboxing skills and tough life he had lived in NYC and Japan. Lol. What a joke!! If you do decide to use this company which would not give me any satisfaction by even returning my phone calls or messages after the incident, do it at your own risk! It tells me the owner does not care either... *Also noticed that their better business bureau recommendation has been revoked!! read more

If no stars was an option, that be my rating. I have extra room that I let my extended family use to store their items and they hired these guys. My cousin showed them where the exyra room was. Johnny the Mover put a king size mattress in my bedroom doorway, my nephews toy car on my sofa as well as a big entertainment set in my kitchen (they made it no where near the extra room in the back of my house). I didn't know how to approach these guys since English isn't their first language so I let it go. Btw, they knocked over my dogs water bowl and didn't say anything about it either. Interestingly enough, my drive way smelled like weed right after they left (whatever, that part is not my business). Today, they came back. I simply told them I cleaned up the mess they left and rearranged my home so I need to show them where everything is. They got mad cause I used the word "mess". They left without doing a thing. I guess they can provide for their family & habit with their big ego. read more

Pros: Able to make an appt on short notice Cons: TARDINESS - They were an hour late, which I suppose normally would not be a big deal. However, we were moving into an apartment complex so we had to reserve the elevator for a specific timeframe and once the time is up, we have to hand the rights over to the next tenant that reserved it. So losing an entire hour from that is a huge deal. TOO MANY BREAKS - Without exaggeration, one of the three movers took at least 4 smoke breaks that I witnessed. Which means there might've been a dozen more that I wasn't able to catch. Those smoke breaks cost me about $50! Considering each break was about 5min times a dozen breaks, and they were charging us $140 per hour. NOT EFFICIENT - (which I suppose is related to the above complaint). For lack of a kinder word, they were very stupid in their method of moving stuff. No strategy or plan whatsover. Lots of standing around asking each other what to move next and where, etc. We used Kama'aina movers twice in the past and let me tell ya, those guys know what they're doing! (Btw, I am not affiliated with Kama'aina in any way and the only reason why we didn't use them this time was because they were booked during the week we needed to move). Anywho... TOO EXPENSIVE - The only large items were the bed, dining table and tv console. Otherwise enough boxes for a 2 bedroom apartment. It took over 5 hours which totaled approximately $700 (this doesn't include my assisting for an hour). Keep in mind we had everything packed and all moved to the living room ready to go. The last time we used Kama'aina we had the same large items plus a huge couch and fish tank and twice as much stuff filling a large 4 bedroom house. The same number of movers only took 3.5 hours and charged $120/hr. Sometimes you DON'T get what you paid for. CARELESS - One mover flat out DROPPED my bookcase upside down. Another box was marked with the standard "This side up..." and we found it the next day upside down. Our microwave is completely scratched up on one side. We found some new dings on our once beautiful dining table. The list goes on. read more

Well 2x in a row we set up a meeting for them to come and scope out the place to see roughly what needs to be done and both times no call no show, we ended up calling to see whats going on and the last time the worker said "oh traffic was bad so I just decided to turn around" like ummm you don't wanna call anyone to let them know? In a complete panic I asked my building for a recommendation and they recommended Johnny the mover. They accommodated my LAST MINUTE REQUEST for the next day 9:30 am. They were on time!!!! whew!!!!! Professional, fast AND cheaper than the other guys. Plus they needed a second truck cuz I have a lot of stuff and they brought another in 20 minutes for only $80 more flat rate (basically the gas). The stress and panic from the disastrous day before went away with competent professionals to handle the job. I give 2 stars instead of 1 because the men that were sent to do the job were kind. The owner, however, is a complete jerk and cussed me out over the phone over his OWN mistake. We used this company in the past and they got the job done- so when we were looking for a mover for a piano we had purchased, we called Johnny. I told him that we were looking to move a 1920s cast iron (VERY HEAVY) upright piano and the job would require at least 3, maybe 4 men. I was quoted $150/hr. The morning of the job I showed up and there were 2 men there with zero equipment. They told me that they couldn't do the job because the piano was too heavy. The moving men were very nice and apologetic. They knew I had said 3 men told me they were sorry that the owner had only sent 2. Johnny himself literally cussed me out over the phone. Told me his men couldn't do it and that he didn't give a sh*t what I did... find someone else. I couldn't believe his language on the phone. When I mentioned Yelp... he dropped a few F bombs and I ended up hanging up the phone right then and there. They profess to be a Christian company and even have Jesus' name on their trucks... but the absolutely filthy language and customer service definitely showed a different side. One of the worst companies to go through. The guys were an hour late. No boxes, tape, etc. Me and my wife which is pregnant on her first tri-mester had to pack our shit with them to make sh*t happen. Johnny, the owner advised his co worker that I go buy my own boxes....WTF. What kind of moving company goes to a house to pack without boxes, tape, etc ???? Theres a miscommunication with the workers and the boss (Johnny)....DO NOT HAVE THESE GUYS MOVE YOUR BELONGINGS. PAY THE EXTRA MONEY TO GET STUFF DONE RIGHT. read more
