My first time attending a dozen years ago there were a hundred or so people in attendance. Dishes offered were made from wild game with deer being the most widely used. My most recent visit was much different than my first. There were over 600 people and over 150 dishes entered. The creativity and meat choices were much more diverse, using squirrel, bear, wild boar, duck, wild turkey, caribou, trout and elk. No store bought dishes are allowed to enter the tasting to compete for the monetary prizes, which have increased. In the past there was a door fee of about $6.00 per adult and $5.00 for children. They have added the option of free admission with one wildlife dish in lieu of the increased $10.00 door fee. There is always a prayer said before the serving begins. There are raffles for bikes for the kids and rifles for youth and adults. There are so many people in attendance in recent years that you fellowship with strangers because you are usually packed in rather closely to them. This year there is another option for people not ready to taste the wild side. Rollin' Rumps BBQ Catering and Vending will cook barbecue and hot dogs.

In a small unassuming 6 room house on Meigg Street, Adrienne Combs Webb gave birth to six children…read morein the front bedroom. In 1990, after the death of their mother, the Webb Family donated the home to the city of Corinth to be used as a shelter for families in crisis. In 2003 a group of citizens had an idea to turn the home into a museum. Volunteers refurbished the house, landscaped the grounds and collected and displayed artifacts that reflect the local African-American heritage. The goal of the museum is to tell the story of the black experience in Corinth and the surrounding community through artifacts. This is not a grand scale museum but it packs a punch. One room of the six-room house is dedicated to school artifacts and memorabilia, another to churches and one to heroes and service. One bedroom, with period furniture, contains the old birthing bag, tools and equipment used by midwife, Mrs. Mittie Patterson. Old deacon chairs, with names of prominent members of St. Mark Baptist Church and an old podium from City Road CME Church and photos of black churches and pastors are displayed in the church room. There are numerous depictions of the Easom High School's team mascot, the Yellow Jacket, in the School Room, along with artifacts from Scale Street and Corinth Colored High School. The Service Room has a photo of Ruby Elzy, one of the first inductees in the Mississippi Musicians Hall of Fame. Born in Pontotoc, Elzy's parents later moved to Corinth. She graduated from Rust High School and College where she was discovered as a soprano singer. The museum is only open Thur and Fri 11:00-4:00 and is free to the public, although donations are appreciated.

I have been wanting to come here for a long time. First of all, they have no soap in the bathrooms…read moreto wash your hands. Nor, did they have paper towels to dry your hands off. The concession stand was small with a long line. You couldn't hardly see to read the menu as it was in front being blocked by race fans. Their prices seemed reasonable though. Admission was only $10 which is great but they had so many cautions during the races that you couldn't enjoy the races. Plus, it was cold here too. They had a long intermission that lasted about an hour that included bicycle races. During this time, I just went and sat in my truck until it was over. The banking of the actual dirt track was weird. I think it caused a lot of cautions. I saw no one pass anyone for the lead. Just a bunch of wrecks. The grandstands were light too. Not many race fans in the grandstands. Furthermore, I couldn't see the whole race from the main grandstands. The wall is so high that you can't see the race cars along side it. Anyway, it was nice visiting this racetrack for the first time. But, I don't think I will be coming back because it is so far. Not enough hotels in the area either. Every year the Alcorn County Welcome Center hosts an open house. Locals and travelers are welcome…read moreto attend for free. It is a celebration of the season with singing carols and drawings for small gifts. Food is provided by local restaurants. This years' special guest was local celebrity Kay Bain. Kay Crotts is a native of Corinth who had been singing since the age of four. At the age of thirteen she sang on Buddy Bain's Farm And Home Hour on WCMA. After graduating high school she joined Buddy Bain and the Buddies, who went on to open shows for acts like Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Roy Orbison, and many stars of the Grand Ole Opry. In 1957, Buddy and Kay had become a man and wife act. In October of 1978, Buddy and Kay hosted a daily program called Mornin'. Among the nationally-known celebrities who have shared a cup of coffee with them were Art Linkletter, Patsy Montana, J.D. Sumner, and Bill Anderson. Tim McGraw made his first television appearance on the show in 1991. The popularity of Mornin' led to Buddy and Kay receiving an invitation in 1994 to appear on the country music show Hee Haw. After Buddy's passing in 1997, Kay, now in her 70's, hosts Kay Bain's Saturday Mornin' Show on WTVA, in addition to entertaining at nursing facilities and personal care homes across North Mississippi. On an average of three times a week, Kay goes on a road trip for each visit and carries her own equipment so that she can entertain and personally chat with as many residents as possible. She looks the same as she did when I watched her in my childhood. Local restaurants donated food for today's event. Taylor's Escape offered fish, chicken strips and hush puppies. The Dinner Bell offered sweet potatoes, cornbread salad, chocolate cobbler and chicken 'n dressing. Pizza Grocery offered (a) pepperoni pizza and (a) cheese pizza. There were sausage and biscuits, pancakes, a variety of cookies, slug burgers, chicken strips, mashed potatoes and gravy. McAlister's offered tea. Nothing was labeled explaining what restaurants provided what food items. I only mentioned the names and items that I was 100% sure about. Everything about the event was pleasurable and seemed to be enjoyed by everyone in attendance. There is no reason to critique the food and beverages, since they were donated. I personally didn't put anything on my plate that was unpalatable. I approached Mrs. Bain for photo ops and an autograph. She is very warm and humble. She has not changed in looks since the late 70s and early 80s when I watched her on Mornin'. Still has that same smile, sincere and not forced.

Veterans Day Brunswick Stew 11-11-15…read more The room began filling up, mostly older people. I was at the end table so I could watch and leave easily when ready. A gentleman with a cane sat across from me. We didn't speak at first as we both were sat at an angle facing away from the table. As the room filled we turned our chairs inward. I smiled and said hello, he didn't hear me but he did smile. Several minutes went by and a lady from the desserts table approached him. They spoke briefly and he asked her if they had sugar there, she looked confused and said no they only have sweets. He told her someone bought him a cup of coffee and a couple packs of sugar, but he didn't realize it would be a quart of coffee. I told her I would get him some and I did go get him 4 more packs. He thanked me and pointed out a man and asked if I knew who he was and I told him I didn't. He told me he was the man that bought him the coffee. I responded, "I don't know anyone in the room except you." He asked if I was from out of town and of course I had to hang my head a bit as I told him I've lived here all my life, but I didn't know anyone. He smiled. I told him my name was Tina and he told me his first name. I didn't catch it, but neither of us were really speaking very loudly. We both go silent again for several minutes. The serving of the Brunswick Stew began and that's the reason for all the folks and fellowships today, Veterans Day. I asked the gentleman if he wanted some stew and he declined. I got my bowl and returned. It was too hot to eat right off so I asked him if he was in the Army or Marines. He said he was the Commander of the entire state of Mississippi in the Army and was also in the National Guard. He also said he worked at the courthouse for 16 1/2 years, but I didn't catch the part about what the job/title was...he was definitely soft spoken! Someone brought a bowl of stew for the gentleman and left. I folded a paper towel up for him, opened the cracker sleeve and put a few on another towel for him to reach, and asked if he wanted some water. He declined, but humbly said he would drink a Coke. I was already getting out of my seat to buy him one as he was rummaging his coat pocket for money and I shook my head no. I returned with a Coke and a cup of ice, opened the can and poured it up for him and set up the straw. The stew cooled slightly and he remarked there was an excessive amount of pepper as he blotted his nostrils and laughed. It was a good batch though and something I had been craving for some time. We went silent again, as random people talked to him, and you can tell they knew him well enough to not have to repeat his name, hence the reason I still don't know his first name. Well, yes I could have asked him to repeat it, but I'm not that kind of girl. I'm watching new faces enter the building and getting their red poppy flowers pinned to their shirt. I got there too early for a poppy myself, they hadn't set it up at the time. I got a chuckle from watching a 4' tall woman trying to pin a poppy onto the chest of a massive 6'+ tall man, he saw me laughing and that made him laugh. It's the small things like that moment that make me happy. Yet, there are simple moments that can make me sad within seconds. Here I am, sitting within the hallowed walls of an American Legion, its beautiful and sturdy hardwood floors with marked, scratched and gouged boards, walls covered in framed photos of Veterans and dozens of Veterans walking the floors today, wearing their head ornaments. I have across from me, a gentleman that has lived a life I can only imagine, as I didn't ask personal questions about his service or if he saw battle himself, and then to my other side at the adjacent table, I have another Veteran; one that was pushed in a wheelchair, by a nursemaid, up to that table feet from me. I helped move chairs so they could get to the table. During the quiet lulls of the conversation between the gentleman and myself, I would look at the man in the wheelchair and watch as the nursemaid spoon fed him and wiped his mouth. Yes, I got misty-eyed. It brought back flashes and memories of me, as a teen, spoon feeding my own Grandparents. I picked up the trash from our area and discarded it. I gathered my sunglasses and iPad and walked over to the gentleman, hugged his neck and told him I was honored to meet him and wished him a beautiful day. He said the same, but added 'be careful'. Respect. For those apposed to war, respect for a Veteran is not in their DNA, but respect for that Veteran as just a fellow human being should be.
