Some friends and I took in a matinee on Sunday. We were in the Amax theater. I loved it perfect thing you for watching Wicked. The surround sound was epic. You felt the vibration as well. The beauty of the colors, the cleanliness of the theater made for a very enjoyable movie experience. I went all out and purchased lunch. You can bring the food in the theater or eat it in the grill area. I had the fish and chips. The fries were absolutely delicious and the fish was meaty. I felt like it was a fair price. Right in line with The going rate for that dish. There's plenty of parking and the staff were friendly. read more

The new location is such an upgrade from before! The seats are comfortable and having a bar is such a huge plus. The food is still overpriced but that's expected at the movies. With the new upgrades I expected the tickets to be outrageous. It was $9 and the drink I got was $11. Totally worth it! read more

New location! New review: The prices are still not competitive, but you get your money's worth as the new theater is miles ahead of its former building in terms of technology, comfort, and aesthetics. Reserved seating, an in-house bar and eatery, luxury reclining seats, and (for now) insect-free clean floors await moviegoers (see my old review below for context)! As a side note, I highly recommend the new "MXT" screen for serious cinephiles. Although the layout of MXT doesn't allow for recliners, the seats are quite comfy and the AV experience is near IMAX quality. I truly hope that Malco doesn't let this building degrade to the state of the old one. ------ Old review: Save yourself the hassle. Just drive to Evansville, IN or Henderson, KY to see a movie. At the Owensboro Malco, you'll first be treated to the highest ticket price in the tri-state area for a matinee. Think paying $2 more for 3D was a good idea? Wait until you find your theater. I've watched at least three first-run 3D movies in unrenovated, grimy theaters (small screen, non-stadium seating, broken seats, busted speakers, etc.). I haven't seen any bugs or rodents that others report, but it would scarcely surprise me. Honestly, I'm not hard to please. Sticky theater floors happen. The smell doesn't bother me. It's near fields and a creek with regular flooding, and like most theaters, it doesn't have great ventilation. I don't expect miracles, but this theater doesn't offer any redeeming services or competitive prices to keep me as a loyal customer. I live in Owensboro so I often find myself "dragged" to see movies here, but I drive out of town to see movies whenever possible. This has to be the most disappointing movie experience I've had in a long time!!! I completely agree with the first reviewer. My husband and I decided to take in a matinee because we have such a difficult time paying full-blown movie prices. What a joke!!! Their "matinee" price is as much as a ticket at all of the theaters I went to back home on the west coast! What?!! Really?! $7 for a matinee!!...not to mention the filthy theater and disgusting bathrooms. To top it all off, I had to go ask the management to turn off the dimmer lights which they normally only keep on during the previews; however they chose not to do so. Last time I'll be spending a fortune at this place! Perhaps if their customer service and cleanliness improved they would attract more customers and be able to lower their prices to normal instead of raping the idiots that still waste their money here. This place is a scam. It's nearly $10 bucks for a movie! Also, it's the only place to see a movie in Owensboro. You'd think with it being the only theater and the cost for tickets they would do some serious updating and or renovations. read more

I'm not sure how some can complain so much about a movie theater when it is the only movie theater in town. Yes, I'm sure it is not as nice as other places in bigger cities, however being a small town girl from an even smaller town that had no theater whatsoever, this one suits me just fine for the rare occasion I can actually afford to go see a movie. That is my biggest problem with going out to the movies, cost. I'm lucky if I see more than one new movie a year out at the theater because it is just so expensive! Forget about getting anything from the crazy over priced concession stand. Unless you're a millionaire, I guarantee that popcorn and soda are not worth it! Which is why I do sneak my own drink in, I mean, who doesn't? As others have stated, it is not the cleanest place, but it's also not as bad as others make it sound either. Yes, I have seen popcorn on the floors. But that's about it. People are messy. I have never sat in a sticky chair and the bathrooms have never been as horrid as some claim them to be. Of course I did just say I'm lucky to enjoy a movie once a year, however I used to go out to see at least one movie a month before my son was born, back when I still had money. One of my favorite things about this place is the credit card ticket machine. You can bypass any long lines at the employee manned ticket booth by using the ticket machine next to it that accepts credit/debit cards. So again, this place is nothing special. It's a little run down & could definitely use a remodel. The seats aren't the most comfortable & for anyone who gets cold easily, be sure to wear a light jacket. I always freeze in here! It may not be like anything you'd find in a big city, but for us small town folk, it serves it's purpose. It's a place to go to see a new movie. Malco theater is very outdated. The front of the building has paint chipping off. The projectorndoes not cover the whole screen, and in theater 11 at least, the AC is louder then the speakers read more

The new Malco cinema grill was great! Reclining seats are very comfortable. Very clean and lots of parking. Experience is very positive.

Went to see monsters university the other day. Had to pay full price of a small fountain drink which is $4.00 just for a fountain water. The theater is always dirty and smells like mold, popcorn and other snacks taste terrible and old! I absolutely hate going to this theater. Hallways leading to the auditoriums are too dark. Staff seems to have an air of self-righteousness and a "How dare you ask a question" attitude. Not particularly clean. Overpriced, for the experience, but they are the only option in town and they know it. Avoid, if you can. read more

We got tickets to the movie we wanted to see. The bathrooms are filthy as well as the theatre. Concessions are a joke. They advertise cappuccino and coffee, but don't have it. No large cups for drinks and out of several types of candies. We waited outside of the theater while they cleaned, but the carpets are covered in popcorn and drinks are spilled on the floor. Worst movie theater ever. Its falling apart and in desperate need of an upgrade. The pre bagged popcorn they warm up and sell for outrageous prices stinks up the theater like a huge fart. You'll never see a controversial movie make its way through these doors because the owners have some kind of religious agenda and always have two horrible Christian movies in rotation at all times. "Kirk Cameron Saves Christmas" or whatever. If you want to see a popular independent film you can just forget it and make the trek all the way to Evansville. read more

It is generally dirty although they have many employees standing around and it appears the management's job is to sit at a desk by the entrance staring at each other or watching guests walk in w/out greeting them. Toilets are always filthy, popcorn all over the floor everywhere, employees usually have a "I hate my job" look. But, the movies start on time with few glitches and the sound is good. Hopefully the new location will be managed better. We definitely need some competition in town. read more

This is the only theater in town so can't go anywhere else to watch new movies when they come out. The matinee prices for adults and children are about the same; 50 cents difference. It is a theater so food and drinks are always expensive, but I don't go there for the food. read more

Our name is Matthew and Sandra R. From Greenville Kentucky. Let me start by referencing that I am 53 years old with three grown daughters whom I've been taking to the movies since they were infants. Sure I lost money from time to time due to a cranky child that caused us to leave early but it's all part of the experience. More often than not our girls behaved well. Well tonight my wife, daughter and 2 year old grand daughter went to see the 6:30 pm showing of Wonder Woman 1984. Much to my surprise we were told children under 3 were not allowed to see a PG13 movie past 6:30 pm. But if we had made the 4:30 pm showing she would have been allowed in. Lol. Absolutely nonsense. The most ridiculous company policy that I've ever heard of. The child would have been allowed into the 4:30 pm showing but isn't allowed into the 6:30 pm showing just plane stupidity on the Malco company's part. The salesperson said it was company policy. We had already planned ahead if the child became agitated I'd leave and take her to Dairy Queen for Ice Cream while my wife and daughter finished the movie. We all just left and rest assured we will never see a movie at a Malco theatre ever again. With home streaming services taking over and theatre's having to raise prices sky high just to hang on one would think money is money but apparently not because tonight Malco theater turned away over a hundred dollars when my family was not allowed to a movie due to a nonsensical and contradictory policy on children. Never again. I went home and purchased HBO Max and watched Wonder Woman 1984 at my own home for 14 dollars flat. Terrible policy. Not a family friendly theater. read more

Malco is a reasonably clean, reasonably priced theater which usually has any new movies you might want to see. No frills or bells and whistles but definitely a nice place to go see a movie. I have been coming here since high school. read more

I find it funny reading the posts. Malco isn't as dirty as is said. I only do 2-3 new movies a year and never have I seen a roach, bathrooms aren't that bad unless the person in it was being nasty. So, blame the people who throw food all over the floor, pee on toilet seats, etc. Be a decent, respectable person when you are there. Teach your kids the same values and maybe things would be more like your expectations. Prices, I agree are terrible. Eat somewhere first or bring in your own snack if you don't wish to pay the prices they set. Supervision does seem slack. But, they way people bring up their kids/teens, no wonder they don't have any ambition to clean something. read more

This place is so horrid it is hard to believe it is still in business. The entire place smells terrible, you cant escape it..... Imagine the smell of a truck stop restroom......except it is EVERYWHERE. Only benefit of this is that it will suppress your appetite enough that you wont be tempted into purchasing the outrageously priced concessions. The audio and video quality is terrible and the screens are half the size of the theatres in Evansville. Most of the movies play so dark it can be difficult to distinguish important details. I cannot recall a single experience I have had in this place that went well. We now drive to Evansville for movies even though it is a major pain. At least I know I will be able to enjoy the movie. read more

I've lived in northern Michigan for the last 30 years but grew up near Owensboro and still visit family there several times a year. We used to go to movies in Owensboro, but the last few years the experience has been so uniformly bad that we won't even consider going there for any reason. It's dirty, the equipment is outdated, and it's expensive. (I've been to quite a few second run theatres ($2 or $3) that were cleaner and more updated.) The seats are uncomfortable, and every time I've been I've had to change seats at least once because the first seat I choose is damaged. I also have to say that the customer service is terrible. I enjoy coming home because people in Owensboro are friendly and customer service is always good. Not at the Malco. I've actually had people be rude to me and to my sister several times. We decided a year or so ago that it was worth it to wait and go to Evansville and see a couple of movies in comfort at the AMC, with the big recliner seats, great sound and projection equipment, better customer service and cheaper prices as well. As far as I can guess Malco knows they're the only game in town, so they just assume people will "just take it". read more

It's still so filthy, smells and is otherwise disgusting. Trash and popcorn are strewn, sticky floors and many times, seats! The popcorn isn't even made there. It's just heated up from huge bags. There is never an adult there. It appears that only high schoolers work there. There is little supervision. The bathrooms are always in need of scrubbing. I've been to many theaters coast to coast and I have to say that Malco's popcorn is ridiculous! Not only is is pre-popped and brought out in bags, but it's not fresh and it looks like somebody has crushed it or broken it all up into tiny crumbs! I thought maybe it was just a bad popcorn night, but it has been like that every time! Over priced and horrible! One of the highest priced theaters I've ever been to. And the smell inside some of the theaters is moldy/musty. We have also seen mice. Time for an exterminator. read more
