Very pretty beach, we came here for the first time years ago and enjoyed ourselves. Came back again this past weekend and it was crazy busy, but the beach was still in pristine condition. Traffic to get here sucks and parking is a pain but it's worth it for this beach. We were able to enjoy it from the boat as well. We anchored the boat and all jumped into the water to swim, it was really nice though the water was cold. There were tons of paddle boarders around, but lots of fun nonetheless. read more

Another perfect morning here...sans all the trash left behind by the nearby visitors. It takes minimal effort to pickup your trash after you've enjoyed a day at the beach. Sigh. 1 star for all the trash and clothing left behind. Well at least "Larry" wasn't here this year to attempt to have my car towed away as it was parked in my driveway. read more

OH MY.. MY FAVORITE BEACH. Just beautiful and clean. Malibu stretches pretty far down from Santa Monica past Point Dume. Beautiful scenery if driving from LA taking the 101N, getting off on Las Virgenes going through the canyon passing Pepperdine University. Parking is fairly easy to find, just be careful crossing the streets. Don't forget to pick up after yourself to keep the beach clean and protect the sea life. read more

I think it's worth driving a half hour out of the city down RT 1 to the beach and it's right on the highway depending on the day you may have trouble finding a parking spot but you also cut down on the number of people. The beach is really clean and safe. Great view of the city read more

EL Matador is a great Beach you have privacy but it's not a private beach there are caves in and B are the mountains the water nice. Only problem is the sand so much oil is washes ashore if you scratch the surface of the sand it's all covered in tar and it gets on your feet and it's quite disgusting. read more

This weekend it was my birthday, and I celebrated the Big 3-0! Yes, I am officially no longer in my 20s. I came to this park, wrote some poems, did some soul searching and I was surprised. This place is gorgeous, clean and the air is so crisp. It doesn't get too crowded, and this beach is a treasure in touristy mailbu. If you ever get the chance to visit, bring your camera! And bring your paper pad in case you have the urge to write poems like me :) ! ------------------- A Private Person .... Checked in Yesterday here in the AM. This Yelp entry is rather nebulous in its actual location as there are many iconic beaches associated with Malibu. Some better than others for Surfing and some better for Paddle Boarding and some best just to hang out and absorb some nice sun rays on a sunny day in Winter like today. As far as surfing as noted by my yelp friend Robin, some of the locals are a bit territorial and can be "kooks" but generally polite conversation, surfing etiquette, and giving way when you don't have the right away generally wins the day with even the most irrational and selfish types sharing the water. Parking is free along PCH for most of the local Malibu beaches, only you have to find a spot. So if there is a swell, and it is a nice day, better get there early if you want a free spot. Also there are some excellent restaurants here ranging from low costs taco places to expensive trendy Japanese and Italian restaurants. The views here in the morning and late afternoon are spectacular and worth the visit often. Early in the morning, you can often have encounters with sea life such as Dolphins, Seals, Sea Lions, and Aquatic Birds. I have never seen a shark but one of my surfing buddies spotted a Great White directly near me one Sunday morning which I did not see nor encounter; Thanks Josh for spooking me totally and forever! Also, for safety and money saving, the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department patrols PCH in this area very aggressively. The posted speed limit in this area varies from 45 to 50 miles an hour. Be warned, this is one of the most lucrative traffic enforcement areas in all of SoCal. Unless you enjoy paying $380 speeding tickets, watch your speed in Malibu on PCH. They will ticket you for 5 miles over the speed limit. Holidays here can be crowded, but in general this area and these beaches are a nice place to visit. And lastly when visiting please pick up after yourself and keep our special place clean and your silly Boom Boxes and choice of music at home. read more

what a wonderful world. just taking a moment to enjoy the simplicity of wonder :) Malibu beach itself is unique. The coastline has strands of flat level beaches and some cliffs. It's hard to pinpoint where exactly Malibu begins or ends but it's between Zuma Beaches and Palisades... There's a decent amount of establishments in between but i am not fond of most of them except starbucks cause you know... It's sbux. Typically when I come out this way, it is to bbq, get freaky (night time), or just enjoy a wonderful picnic. Korean-American style which includes geem bap, mandoo, tacos, sammiches and many other yummy, economical, homecrafted finger foods. I'm too old to play in the sand. Well, not too old, but, sand is tough terrain to run, wrestle, and play football in. Especially the day after. Parking can suck, but, I have some tricks up my sleeve in desolate or isolated areas of this magnificent coastline. Since I went to school (high school/college) near Sa-Mo Beaches... We were kids the first time we surfed here. Actually, we never got to surf because the locals gave us the boot, told us to go home. Fuckers. The last time was 2 seasons ago, for the much bally-hooed "Rootbeer Swell". I went with my bf and we paddled out an hour before sunlight into a cold, dark red tide. I was totally unfamiliar with this break in the pitch-black and the weird greenish-white splashes from his paddling was the only way I could trail him. I've been in the ocean all my life and have never seen the water so full of phosphorescent plankton, it was indescribable. I stopped paddling just to sit for a moment and watch the fantastic display as I brushed the water sparking a light-show. I could hear the waves cracking just in front of us and crests of brilliant green-white would rise up and crash over us until we made it outside tired but excited. It was about head-high in the surf zone and you had to paddle for the waves more from instinct than anything else. My first attempt planted me face-first into the trough and that was my wake-up wipe-out. Okay, lesson learned. I surfed for a while but had lost my bf as the sun began to expose all the other surfers around me and I was stunned. Everyone knew in advance that this swell was coming in today and it looked like every board rider on the west coast was here. Every wave I tried for had a half-dozen aggro kooks wishing and hoping I'd fall so they could get some solo time. Guys would drop-in on me like I wasn't even there until I pointed the tip of my board at their face at which time they'd grumble a kick-out. Fuckers. Aggression was the only way anyone ever got a wave this day. After I caught one that took me all the way into the bay, I called it quits and, as sometimes happens, my bf was right alongside me. He'd gotten some good ones too and said he'd seen my last ride and we were both hopped up on adrenaline. What a drug...better than any crank. But we had to get to work and it was time. It was hard to believe we'd paddled out 1 1/2 hr before. We turned from the waves and the crowd and ambled back to the car after hosing down our boards, suits and selves to get the stink and slime off. It was the filthiest water I think I've ever been in with dead zooplankton turning the ocean a sickly, stinky brown-red. "Rootbeer Swell" was an appropriate moniker (photo posted). Sewage leaching out from the Lagoon didn't help either and I prayed I wouldn't get sick. I'm not an aggressive surfer so competing with 20 macho, maniacal, surf-psych'ed guys for each wave was a turn-off and this would be my last Malibu surf (I think). Gidget grew up (pretty much). With internet speed, anyone and everyone can tell when a swell burps in the Aleutians and can predict the arrival of surf into the "window" just like what happened here. Well Sunshine, I don't need to be seen at the 'Bu for an ego-stroke. As we drove south past the break, there must have been several hundred wet-suited bumps in the zone and as far as I was concerned, they could have it. Low marks for pollution, crowds and aggression. read more

I love this little hotel by the beach. The rooms were so beautiful. It was so amazing to fall asleep to the sounds of the ocean and even more amazing in the morning. We stayed there on a night that was extremely windy and a tree fell on a power line middle of the night so we didn't have electricity when we woke up. It would t have been a super big deal if the toilets weren't bidet and powered by only electricity. This was out of their control but they handled iThe front desk was very quick to get the power turned on within a few hours and provide breakfast till the power came back m on.mm read more

There is something special and exclusive about Malibu--even despite the fact that thousands of people visit every day. The drive to Malibu is always wonderful, full of adventure, interesting turns, and the sense of joy that comes from so many random things you will see there. Santa Monica is too touristy and just feels grungy compared with the sophisticated and cosmopolitan Malibu. Malibu has so many waterfront restaurants, including Moonshadow. I don't get it. Who's giving this place 5 stars. Ewwww! We drove the pacific coastal highway through Malibu hoping to stop at the beach and have lunch at a restaurant but to my surprise everything felt so rundown and unappealing. There was trash, weeds, crowds, unmaintained landscapes and no parking ANYWHERE. The repulsive smell from everyone cooking on the beach really smelled toxic (and we were in our car!) Loved the people living out of their grocery carts and 1970's RVs lined up along the beach. The place is rundown and ugly. And the homes; while some are clearly beautiful the majority of them aren't. Felt like the place is stuck in the 70's. If you like Daytona Beach in Florida than you will love this place. What a dump! Too many other beautiful beach towns elsewhere. read more

Nice place to chill but it's hard to find parking, and when you found one it's usually flat rate from 10 to 25 bucks.

Awesome area if u wanna get away from the crowds. Lotsa big rocks tho which makes it difficult for kids to walk over to get to the waves part. Prime spot for surfboard paddling (as I have seen half a dozen surfers doing it around this area). read more

Malibu Beaches for All Learn how to access the hidden beaches of Malibu! August 12, 2007 www.unhipla.com Thanks to the Los Angeles Urban Rangers, I'll never be intimidated by a no-trespassing sign again. On Saturday, August 11, 2007, the Rangers, a merry band of artists, urban planners, and environmentalists, led a "safari" to the Malibu Beaches and showed about 35 people how to access and enjoy the pristine beaches there that are blocked by beachhouses. Under California law, the coastline up to the mean high tide line is open to public access. Not too many people know this, and thus shy away from what seem to be exclusive beaches. The owners also post up misleading private property signs to scare off people. Please see my previous posts for more info and links to great maps. The safari was very well organized with activities such as enacting stereotypical beach activities and making tableaus out of them, "trailblazing" - measuring off dry sand easements, potlucking and singing. We used a tape measure to find the specs of the sandy beach that we were allowed to play on. Homeowners can own parts of the sand, just not the part that directly touches the ocean. Many of the private properties have easements which allow the public to use the beach. It was empowering seeing what a 25 feet easement looked like and knowing we had all that space. We took a moment of silence at an accessway gate (public path to the beach) that was only opened for three weeks, most likely as a vengeful act by one beachhouse owner to another. In front of another beach house, we sang Arlo Guthrie's "This Land is Your Land." The rangers, outfitted in forest ranger garb, were knowledgeable, sincere, and irreverent, a great combo. Smokey the Bear and Ranger Rick would love them. At least one angry homeowner in bathing trunks came after us as we used a tape measure before this property. At the end of his beach deck, he stood ready to bite. We entered the beach at the 22126 Pacific Coast Highway, the David Geffen accessway as it is fondly known. I feel bad for the guy; he's basically has a parade of beachgoers right next to his compound. But what does he expect? He doesn't own the beach. His security guard patrolled the area, telling a few group members not to lean on the porch. Here are some shots from our day. A rare find. The most breath taking views and better than any SO CAL beach (believe it or not) It is an open to all beach, however located privately owned parking sector so you have to park accross the street. Not hard to find off the road. I only gave it 4 stars because I'm not a big fan of seaweed otherwise a perfect spot for a family VaCa. read more

A bit of a winding walk to the water, but it is Okay. A surfing only area, lots of swimmers and best of all, great view of the land from the water. You can either park across the road and walk quite a lot OR park in the paid parking where it is a bit pricey. read more

I recently visited Leo Carrillo, and I was saddened with what I saw. What was once a tide pool area has become a dumping ground. Even the surrounding parking lots have deteriorated with weeds and trash that covering them. read more
