I really wanted to like Mamajuana. The place is decorated beautifully in a tropical style, and our waiter was genuinely amazing.He was super kind and attentive. We ordered a bunch of food, and everything was just okay. Same for the drinks decent, nothing special. I was actually going to rate it higher... until I saw roaches. That instantly changed everything and made me question the entire sanitation of the restaurant. I've been nauseous just thinking about it. Once you see one roach, you already know there are more and if you bring even one into your home, it becomes a nightmare to get rid of. Because of that, I cannot recommend this place to anyone. The restaurant is conveniently located across the hotel I was staying at. On my first night, I went to check it out. A beautiful entrance with artificial flowers covering the walls, a heart of red flowers. Inside a collection of pottery resembling relics of pre-Columbian times. The menu was limited. I swayed between steaks, and decided on Puerquito, a dish for two. Slow roasted pork, rice & peas, onion escabeche, maduros. Delicious. I had left-overs for two more meals. An iced cold Presidente beer accompanied the meal. Service was pleasant and prompt by a young woman, Dayria. We had calamari to start out. The breading was light and flavorful, but the calamari was a bit chewy. For the entree, I shared the puerquito (slow-roasted pork) and beef burger with my bf. The burger was dry and overcooked. The bun was hard, as if it was heated up in the oven for too long and then left out for a bit. It was probably one of the worst burgers I've ever had. The puerquito was huge and could've fed 2-3 people. I would expect a slow-roasted pork to be softer and juicier, but it was dry unless you're eating straight fat. We asked for some sauce to go with it which helped combat the dryness. I really liked the rice and plantains though. Ambiance was casual, party/club vibes, with a DJ. The service was good. They do a great Sunday Brunch! For 2 hours, you can enjoy a buffet of traditional Dominican dishes including an omelette bar, made to order pancakes and eggs and pasta station. This time, it was far from what I'm used to. The manager kindly had it remade, but even the second plate was disappointing. Our server was friendly, but I also ordered a lychee margarita that came without any lychees. At $15, I expected the drink to be made correctly. The frustrating part was that lychees were available, the manager had the server bring some over after I asked. If they had them, why not get it right the first time? Mamajuana is a new spot we checked out because the old restaurant Ivy Stone that was here was HORRIFIC so my expectations wasn't that high but I went in with an open mind. It was a Wednesday night and the restaurant was mostly empty. We had a party of 10 for my cousin birthday dinner and they sat us right away. Ordered apps which was tasty and cooked properly. We also ordered drinks in which the strawberry margarita was on point. The wait staff was friendly and pleasant which made the experience better. Nothing like a good waitress. We proceeded to order entrées and everyone said the food was good. My wife ordered a burger and she said it was cooked and season good and I ordered the skirt steak which I was pleasantly surprised that it tasted as good as it did. It needed some extra salt and pepper but overall good job chefs. I asked for medium and it came out medium. Sometime you have to send steaks back because the chefs over cook the temp but this steak cook was right on. Overall I give it 2 thumbs up as it's a 180 degrees turnaround from Ivy Stone. Only thing that I can say negative that it was a little slow getting the food out with it being so empty on a Wednesday. So I planned a brunch here last Sunday 12/3 for me and my girlfriends. A little celebration for my birthday. It was my first time so I didn't know what to expect. I'll start with the Pros. The food was okay. The stew chicken was delicious. The service was eventually good. The waiters kept us topped off. The bottomless mimosas were very good. And the entertainment was cute. I really enjoyed it. Now to the Cons. When we arrived it was only four of us but they allowed us to be seated as it was a two hour brunch that ended at 5pm. However, as the last of my guests were entering they refused to pour our drinks until everyone paid. That upset me because they had my credit card on file as I made the reservations and paid the holding fee. We had to continually remind them of things we did not order. The server refused to fix a double order of drinks of Mama Jersey even though he knew he did not serve anyone else at our table did not drink it. The Passion Fruit Margarita ($10) and Areito Cocktail ($11 - Wheatley, Vodka, Peach, Trie Sec + Passion Fruit Puree) were both made well. My friend enjoyed the Red Sangria ($11). Colorful table/ place settings, vibrant decor in the form of lighting arrangements, fabric table napkins + table cloths, etc. Mamajuana has a lively bar area. After visiting establishment in Patterson, NJ I decided to give this location a shot. My wife and I visited on a Friday around 5:30 pm, it was not crowded at all, we got seated by the window with an outdoor view of the highway. We were waited on by Yeimy who was very welcoming and very accommodating. For our appetizer, we ordered the Chicharoncitos (pork bites) however I realized after that they gave me Ceviche de chicharron which was totally different than what I was expecting as it came mixed with yuca, cilantro and lime sauce. I will give that a 1 out of 5. For our entree, we ordered Churrasco (grilled steak) with a side of white, black beans and a side of sweet plantains, my wife had the Chillo Boca Chica which is the fried red snapper with rice and peas. The fish was pretty well flavor however the steak could have used a little bit more seasoning. However we had a great time and will visit again. The manager left and so did the hostess, once the hostess returned she came with a man (who I assume runs the establishment) and two other men (for what, I'm not sure) and we were told we couldn't be seated because of the upcoming event. My friend re-established that the host gave her the ok and should've communicated that they weren't able to service us before the event. I, also, stated that I should've been communicated with prior so I can proper accommodations and the "boss" stated they have an automated system so essentially taking no fault for the situation.
