Cute as pie for such a iddy biddy teeny weenie airport. TSA is awesome there. No rushing since the checkpoint is just about 3 yards away from security. Large screen TV (unfortunately only is on ESPN) so the free wifi saves the day. The view from the gate area is spectacular. It's almost mesmerizing to see Mammoth Mountain and the ski runs from one side and Mt. Morrison facing out towards the runway. It's free site seeing. Who knew? lol Anyway, everyone there is friendly. They have a new waiting area tent beside the terminal since there's more space over there, a bathroom and free wifi as well. Inside is some food, things to purchase to remember Mammoth (T's, Sweatshirts, Post cards, stickers etc) If you aren't sure of the flight time to go through security, there is a PA announcement that an be heard both inside and out. Just be sure not to wait last to show up or last minute to go through security. There is no excuse to be late if you're sitting outside or in the waiting area. The airlines close down before the flights begins boarding. No excuses and no exceptions. You wouldn't do that at a place like O'Hare or Newark. Show up late and it's your problem. 2 hours early for big airports..I would say 1 hour before boarding time at Mammoth. Always Always check your bags in first, then you can go outside or whatever. If you miss your flight..you are S.O.L until the next day. Winter time has a couple of flight options from flight to and from LAX and that's with Horizion. United has some flights as well (Winter only) but they differ in location day to day so be sure not to screw up. Summertime last 3 years has only been 1 flight with Horizon to and from LAX. Don't miss any. Keep in mind your in the Sierra Nevadas and even though you might show up early, the winds and other variables can make a plane cancel its flight. Don't verbally beat the employees with an assault of potty mouth when mother nature does her thing. That's the price you pay for going to a location like this one. The approach into the airport is absolutely stunning. If you're flying from LAX, you come up the central valley, then take a hard right turn over the Sierra. Breathtaking. It's a mighty short runway so when the reverse thrusters kick in be prepared to be pinned to your seat. Unfortunately Horizon only flies turbo props into MMH which, I'm pretty sure, along with standing too close to speakers at shows in my youth are contributing to my hearing loss. It's a quaint little terminal. Baggage claim consists of a person driving a little truck 20 feet from the plane and basically handing you your stuff. It took many years and more than a few legal battles to get commercial air service to Mammoth. I hope the bighorn sheep aren't too bothered by the occasional flight, 'cause this Portland resident is glad to be spared the hellish 14 hour drive in favor of two quick flights. read more

Wow! This goes on the list of one of the smallest airports I've ever been to. I can see how flights are at the mercy of wind and weather. It was super super bumpy and the plane was getting blown around a lot on the way to LAX. You have National and Enterprise rental cars to choose from. There are no restaurants, just vending machines. As of this review, there is no full TSA PreCheck, but you do get to keep your shoes on. It is super easy to get in/out. It's about the size of a large high school gym. This is the smallest airport that I've ever been to. So getting your luggage and going through security is quick and easy. There is small waiting area in case you arrive early for your departing flight. There ware snacks, drinks, souvenirs, and board games to pass the time. Waiting outside while enjoying the view of the mountains was the best way to wait. So if you don't want to drive to Mammoth from LA, then the hour flight is the way to go. read more

I have lived in Mammoth Lakes 12 years, working and required flying. I have missed about 8 flights. I always give myself an extra day, just in case I have to drive. I watch the weather like a hawk, so I am prepared to redirect my transport. None of this is the fault of the employees. It is a small mountain airport with one runway. If the wind is blowing sideways to the runway, the plane cannot land and returns to LA or SF. Worst thing is when it snows so hard I cannot drive. This is rare as I have a Hummer. Mammoth is a beautiful place to live, and way better than the daily commutes in LA. Employees cannot make definitive statements unless they are told too. People who are not use to small mountain flying had best fly to Reno and drive. read more

This is hands down the smallest airport that I've ever encountered. The only two airlines at this airport were Alaska and United. They operate turboprop and mini jets respectively. Our flight was delayed for approximately 3 hours. When your flight gets delayed, you are pretty much SOL because the number of flights are extremely limited. Although the staff was extremely nice, there isn't much at this airport. The prospect of having your flight canceled is daunting. If I fly out of here again, I'd probably take an earlier flight just to ensure I get home in a timely manner. read more

I'm a little biased because I've watched this airport evolve since 2009. The city took a GA hangar and landing strip and converted it for better or worse into a place that commercial airlines can fly into. Right now, only United and Alaska will fit. The gate is a single room and with the lobby and car rental counters occupying the other predominant room, the TSA kind of had to squeeze in as best they can. I notice they've added a shelter where you can wait during winter season and has a limited amount of concessions. Yes, flights get canceled a lot coming and going from this airport and it lacks the sophistication of large airports, but it's a convenient portal to a magnificent scenic and recreational area that saves you a very long drive from elsewhere. Safety is important so I'd rather have the flight canceled than blow into the mountain. Hertz and Enterprise rent cars at affordable rates (during less busy times) so you can drive to the nearby town to access restaurants, hotels and shops. It looks like hotels that actually offer service directly from the airport are few so check carefully before you book. read more

Very rude Airport. Security and employees would not give a reason to family and loved ones why plane wasn't landing. Not even if it was because of wind? No one knew why the plane turned around and went back to Los Angeles. Airport employees would only say the flight is canceled and they close the whole place up with in minutes and left. With everybody still wondering what happened. A very scary situation when no one on the ground knew why the plane turned around to go back. Avoid flights to this airport, particularly in Winter. I lost entire day of my vacation and cost of one night at a hotel because of this treacherous airport. My flight was showing as ontime up until the minute it should have departed. Then it was announced that it is delayed by 30 minutes and in 30 minutes it was cancelled outright. We were told that next flight is next day and there is not guarantee it would take place. A fellow passenger informed me that flights to this airport are cancelled VERY frequently. He quoted 68% cancellation rate. Given that airline don't inform you about risks of flight cancellations and don't have courtesy to cancel flight at least a few hours in advance seeing the forecast (which was accurate days in advance) I don't recommend flying to this airport. read more

Easy check-in process, friendly employees, what more could one want? It took less than 5 minutes to check in and get through security. That's right, 5 minutes total! Only one plane leaves at a time here and the airport itself can't even fit 100 people. So it's well organized and clean. If you're looking for a place in CA to ski, Mammoth is accesible and quick to get to from almost anywhere. Even from Seattle it only took a few hours to get there. read more

So the airport is small and cute, efficient and convenient to Mammoth Lakes. All that is really irrelevant if your flight cancels. Unfortunately, this airport has a VERY high cancellation rate. This happens all the time, in December 2015, 19 out of 77 scheduled flights cancelled. That's a cancellation rate of 25% folks. December 2016 I'm sure is nearly as bad with many cancellations so far. When the flights go, it's great, but the cancellation risk is too high. Do you really want to screw up your ski weekend with a cancelled flight? read more

The only redeeming quality of this airport is the nice TSA agents. That plus the convenience of being only 10 minutes outside of the city... There are hassles about flying to/from small airports. I would have to say the BIGGEST downside is that the ticketing agents all leave the counter when it's time to board the plane. I have seen multiple people miss their flight because there is simply no one at the counter to help them (even though they arrive prior to the gate closing its doors or the plane leaving. You have to get there early enough to not miss this, but late enough that you don't spend an hour in a boring waiting room with nothing to do. The main reason I avoid this airport is the flight delays and possibility of cancellations. One time we were almost re-routed mid-flight to Reno (from San Diego), due to poor visibility at the MMH airport. Ain't nobody got time for that! Day parking is free, and overnight parking is cheap ($8). Last tip: Make sure to check flight statuses to know about any delays! read more

The IT manager for this airport should be fired. One wifi router with an official sounding name apparently doesn't have a internet connection. The second wifi router I connected two with a generic sounding name worked just fine but router still has the default password. read more

Flew back to LA from here. They actually have electronic check in and a baggage counter for checking in that luggage. Up to date security procedures and terminal is fairly new. I missed my flight by literally a few minutes. As I was checking in the attendant was like you hear those propellers starting up? well that's your plane. then i was like FML. So I waited there for the next flight down to LA which was in 5 hours. Their 76 capacity waiting room had a tv and 2 vending machines. A cute, little efficient airport, with a beautiful scenic view. The waiting area is really hot and crowded; the hangar or outside is much more hospitable, and they even serve a few adult beverages and snacks. Downside is lots of cancellations due to weather. My friends' flight last year was diverted to LAX, and this year, we were warned that if conditions were too windy in Mammoth, we might be diverted to LAX. But, fortunately, we were able to land. Cute little airport with limited flights in and out. It is tiny - you will de-plane directly on the tarmac. The TSA folks here are so nice and accommodating. You will breeze through TSA in a few minutes. No pre-check, but it's not really necessary. There are 2 vending machines for drinks, but when I was there, they didn't work. There is a very small waiting area with chairs. It's conveniently located near the popular ski areas in Mammoth - about a 10 minute drive. read more

This is a small airport indeed. It is almost as small as a landing field for small prop planes. It is only 10 mins from the resort, so it is very convenient. If I remember correctly, an Uber or taxi was about $10 or $15 to the resort area. I did not have any problems(delays) flying in or out luckily. When you land, you exit the plane on a staircase to the tarmac, then you walk to this area where the bring all your luggage to. This is all done outside, and it can take a while for the airline workers to bring your luggage, so be sure to dress warm if you are flying in to snowboard/ski at Mammoth. read more

I've been warned not to use Alaska to fly from San Diego to mammoth. Should have listened. One flight leaving daily with departure time more of a suggestion than a guarantee. Flight delayed for 2 hrs, causing me to miss my connection. They don't provided you with any other options, such as a car rental (at this point would settle for a 5hr drive). The only option is to lose the whole day for a trip that should have taken 3 hrs. No accountability to customers at all. Will not use them for any future flights. read more

We flew as a family from Australia in Jan 2016 to have a skiing holiday. The flight from LA was cancelled going in and also cancelled going out. Going out was more of a problem as we had to get back to LA and the only two hire car counters were obviously jam packed with customers all trying to do the same. While the skiing and people of Mammoth were great we wont go back until the airport and the associated weather/navigation airline issues are solved. Hence in Jan 2017 we skied in Sun Peaks ,Canada. After being told to go into what I did not even realize was a full body scanner before I could object, I was pissed. I rarely fly and had I known that machine was a body scanner I would have opted out. Plus, I still had to be patted down after going through it. The TSA here has nothing better to do than do a full boy scan on each and every passenger. They are not friendly at all and I felt like a criminal. We flew out here from LAX and the security there was so much better, seriously! These guys were a-holes and I will never fly into Mammoth airport just because of it. read more

It is nice to have this airport by the Mammoth ski resort, so people can fly in without driving hours to the resort. However, there are only a handful of flights a day, and for the day of my return flight, two flights (one united, and one Alaska) had some overweight issues. If you don't feel like driving, then this is the airport to go for Mammoth. Not bad, really... read more

On December 8th - the airport is shuts down because the De-Icing machine breaks down? They don't have a back-up? So the Alaska Airlines flight is cancelled because the idiots who run the airport don't have a back-up for the De-Icing. Hello! The airport serves a ski area. A ski area gets snow. Airplanes can't fly if they have ice on the wings because the planes crash and everyone dies. Who ever is running this airport should be fired for sheer stupidity. The plane was full. So not only are all these people massively inconvenienced, think about all of the lost income, ski lift tickets, lodging, restaurant spending, on and on. However, the idiot airport manager saved some money by not having his de-icing equipment up and running and a back-up ready. So next time these affluent flyers plan their next trip, where do you think they will go? Probably not Mammoth! Fire the Airport manager! read more

This rating is mostly the fault of Mother Nature as opposed to airport staff. The staff can't control what the world does but I still wouldn't recommend this airport if you have to be anywhere without having some buffer time. My connecting flight to LAX got canceled today. It's early August with sunny skies but the wind was sufficient to prevent a plane from landing to pick up passengers. Early August so imagine midwinter. Mammoth isn't known for calm winds. About 15 or so passengers managed to clamor into a bus that would go to LA that night. Others had to find transportation back to Mammoth. And rescheduling? There wasn't availability for 4 days (not even a holiday period for what it's worth) so I have to drive from Mammoth to LAX (5 or so hours) to catch a rescheduled flight back home tomorrow. I would strongly recommend just flying to Reno if you don't live in California. Rent a car and drive a few hours. The only reason this isn't 1 star is because most of the staff were pretty cool. There was 1 who was kind of unhappy to be alive but most were cool. Again, though, the same forces that give the awesome landscape will make flight plans stressful. Don't do it. Didn't have a good experience here. Flights get cancelled, they don't inform you about anything going on. Everyone keeps saying 'I don't know'. And security checkpoint collects even the food though its not liquid. And throws even the factory sealed bags of food to trash. What a waste when they keep screaming for help for hunger. This is one of the most idyllic airports in the world. You drive right up to the door and unload your stuff and park about 50 yards away. Majestic mountains rise up behind it. It's true that flights will get canceled in the winter. But that's what you get when you are flying into an airport at 7,000 feet elevation 10 minutes from Mammoth Ski Area. It's tiny, intimate, and ideal for ski trips or summer vacations to Mammoth. Don't expect a food court but there is a little café serving the essentials. read more
