Beware!!! Viktor Benes is no longer operating the bakery at Gelson's. I went to get pumpkin pie from Viktor Benes, which was a traditional part of our thanksgiving every year. They only had pies from Mamolo's bakery. I was told it was the same pie as Viktor Benes, that it was only a name change, so I bought the pie. It was horrible, tasteless, bland, floury, with none of the spiciness and smooth texture of the Viktor Benes pumpkin pie that we had looked forward to every year at Thanksgiving. And, when I got the pie home, it had small white spots on the surface that looked like mold to me. I threw the pie away after taking a few bites. Such a friendly bakery, located inside of the Gelson's in Calabasas. In addition to Lavazza coffee service, they have an extensive variety of pastries and cookies, brownies, muffins, and more for a little daytime nibble. I didn't try one, but there was a small countertop case of warm croissants that looked good. There are some beautiful cakes on display as well. There is a long rack/shelf of freshly baked bread that they make daily out of their own bakery, including a ton of different varieties of challah and other breads. I've been going to Viktor Benes locations in the SF Valley for years. A great bakery that always makes fresh, diverse and delicious cookies and pastries. Their day old muffins in the AM are a great deal. I have ordered a specialty Chocolate Parisian Cake a few times for holidays and they were always amazing. Good coffee and croissants, too. read more

Only giving this a two star because the staff was so kind. The workers were great, but the products here all lack flavor and decent consistency. Not worth it. They had only a pumpkin pound cake and pumpkin muffin top for the season options and they were both so dry and crumbly. Don't waste your money! They use to be on top of their game but not anymore! The past 5 times I gave them a try I was extremely disappointed. It is not much fun spending $50 on baked goods that ended up in the trash once I got home. Nothing and I mean nothing was fresh!!!I have purchased a puppy seed full size cake and some Napoleons, all was old and dry, but yet they brought it from the back as if it was just created...They keep some product in the back and they bring it out as if it was just baked. Yesterday was the last time step foot in this place, and I will do all I can to warn others and will post more reviews anywhere possible. Dear Victor: If you want to be in Calabasas and charge big $$$ you must do the following: A) offer fresh product and dispose of what is not. B) hire some professional and pleasant employees. I ordered cookies of a logo for a special event 3 days in advance. When I picked them up they were entirely the wrong color. Instead of white in the logo they were green. I trusted that they could make what I needed. This was for a very special event for my daughter and now I had nothing to bring that I would be proud of. The manager, who was a teenager was sweet but offered me my money back and that I could take one cookie. Then the owner came out and she was defensive. Then her husband stepped in who is clearly the business person and apologized up and down and was very kind and could see how upset I was. He gave me the 6 cookies and my money back. This went on for 30 min. I wish businesses knew good customer service. They should have given my money back and offered me a personalized cake ... something to make it special. They should have called me and said they were struggling. Do t get me wrong.. giving my money back is good customer service. But not offering me something else to make it special for my daughter, they lost my business. read more

I came here after reading reviews about the great Creme brûlé. I was visiting on a business trip and have an awful sweet tooth. The bakery is gorgeous with soo many great choices (I wish I took a picture). I picked up the brûlé and a couple of assorted cookies and brought them back to my hotel. They looked soo much better than they tasted. Not that they were bad but I guess my expectations were high. The creme brûlé did not have much flavor but the cookies were pretty good. Jesus, the head baker and cake designer, was so helpful, creative, patient and professional as we discussed the nuances of what we wanted for this event. This bakery WAS my favorite place to get the most incredible muffins (still warm), croissants, etc. The quality couldn't be found anywhere and it was where my husband and I would have little morning dates. The pastries reminded us of trips overseas. We were worried when we saw the new management sign outside - I thought, "Oh, gosh, Hope nothing has changed!" We were SHOCKED to see the level to which it sank. Blah "store bought" quality muffins. Croissants that looked like they came from costco. Nothing special anymore. I guess this same bakery is in all the Gelson's Markets. I only know the one in Calabasas. The baked goods are not organic but they do have beautiful cakes. There are always super-creative cakes with holiday themes.........like for Halloween, a big icky-looking ghoul head with protruding bloodshot eyes. Ok. If you go to gelsons and don't stop by this place before you leave , you are missing out . This place has some of the most delicious pastries and cookies you can get from the valley. Everything from the choc chip cookie to the ice cream cookie to the creme brûlée . I have never been upset with any of my purchases here , however the price is a little to costly . Usually I can get more from bakeries for 10$ , but the only issue I have is the prices per lb. which is like 16-17$ If that's not an issue , this place will definitely satisfy your sweet tooth. I love the cookies here they remind me of times long ago at Jewish weddings. They would have a HUGE table piled high with little cookies covered in sprinkles and other types. I've lived in the Woodland Hills/Calabasas area for 16 years. Gelsons has been my store for so many of those years. The problem they had was the bakery. A bakery that served an odd collection of breakfast that had nothing to do with fine European pastries and cakes. As a result, the quality of the baked goods was less than exceptional and the pastries were clearly not at the forefront of a quality initiative. If I wanted rotating Empanadas on a hot plate, I'd hit a Vallarta, not a Gelsons. With the change in management, it's easy to recognize the huge improvement in quality. Clearly, this represents an enormous shift in thinking and puts the bakery back on track to match the quality, freshness, cleanliness and service of the rest of the market. So happy to not have to travel elsewhere for my sweets shopping anymore! It's all here in one place. While the bakery carries many of the staples found in all of the connected Viktor Benes stores, the individually crafted cakes and pastries here really stand out. This used to be a really awesome bakery and we would always get the parisian chocolate cake and other random cakes every other month. Unfortunately, the management changed and the cakes are no longer the same. It tastes sweeter and the quality of the ingredients don't seem the same. For the same price, we now go to that famous amazing cuban bakery in Burbank that's much further away, but definitely worth the trip. Would definitely consider coming back if they bring back the old management. read more

The baker, Jesus, here is a true artist. We had a custom cake made for our daughter's birthday. The party's theme was Totoro (a lovely movie for young kids.) While he wasn't familiar with the movie, he asked for some links to images from the movie and discussed with us what we wanted captured. I have posted a picture. I always stop in here to get some checkerboard shortbread cookies which are amazing. I also get a slice of princess cake and their passion fruit iced tea with the orange slice. SO GOOD. I got a tiramisu cake the other day which I wasn't too fond of, but my boyfriend liked it. The store is always clean and shoppable, never really busy which is nice. read more

Oh I don't know how to start... The manager in the bakery (Juana) I guess that's what her name is, is very rude. When she talk to you she doesn't even look at you she just keep moving and bouncing around without answering you when you have a question. She doesn't even have the guts of telling you why your order that is been ordered 3 days in advance is not ready yet. Instead she will act like it's not a big deal... She has temper and when another lady spoke out on my behalf she insulted her. Is this really the level of customer service that we should get there? Their cakes use to be better but not anymore. everything is one star and expensive. I won't go back. I have been coming to this bakery for about 11 years. They used to have friendly sales associates and their pastries were delicious. I just left this bakery very disappointed. HENRY is the rudest employee I have ever met at this bakery. HENRY seemed to be tired and just did not want to be at work. HENRY rolled his eyes at me, slammed the counter drawers as he was getting my pastries, and was huffing and puffing. In fact, he seemed like he was on something because he was slurring his words! It's Passover during the Coronavirus. How do you make a flourless chocolate cake if you can't find heavy cream? You can't. So the next best thing, I went to my favorite bakery in Gelson's market and picked up the best macaroons and their flourless chocolate cake. We had a great Passover dinner and then it was time for dessert. I placed the cake on a tray and served it. To our disappointment it was so dry and had no flavor. Not even the rich dark smooth chocolate flavor. What happen Viktor? Someone over cooked it. So I called the bakery and told them about it. What did they say. Nothing, the women on the phone said we can not do anything about it. WHAT. I could not believe my ears. No credit, no refund, no I'm sorry come in and get something else? NOTHING. WOW. This was the wrong policy for a business. I am a fabulous baker. In a crunch I come to Viktor to help me out. WELL, you just lost me as a customer. read more

I got back to ask if they put vanilla in my drink and they said we are out of it... so if you're out of it tell me that.
