Unfortunately what was once a long time bustling community hub is no longer the same experience in 2024. Many members have chosen to leave because of new unfriendly management practices and polices. The departure of loved tennis pros who once offered professional coaching and Manchester Prep School for high level tennis players has closed their doors. They offer limited hours (close at 5pm on Sundays), increased rates and less quality offerings (camps, tennis lessons), reduction of tennis courts from 12 to 5 is likely as a result of the many tennis players who have had enough and left or the contracts they require or perhaps the carnival tickets that are needed after scanning your card to hand to your tennis pro or fitness instructor. read more

If you are a pickleball player, don't bother. They really seem like they don't want pickleball there. They also REALLY aren't good at charging the right amount for court time. Sometimes they don't seem to know at all what to charge. I was greatly overcharged a number of times. I just gave up and quit. Lots of other places to play. read more

I've been a member for many years. I love the new owners they really made some major improvements equipment wise and the courts have all been redone. The locker rooms are very clean. I especially love the fitness instructors (very encouraging and welcoming). I don't play tennis at the MAC. I have been a member for over 10 years seen owners come and go but these new owners are really invested and very approachable from the get go. I do miss the snack bar limited hours. I never seem to catch it open when I'm there. I am there more evenings and saturdays- Just wanted to give a shout out to the club because of the previous reviews which i felt were not fair and accurate or reflective of their goals (MAC Community mission). I do think the membership rates are reasonable (comparing to the Y in Gloucester or Beverly). Last but not least during the summer the Farm Stand located near the entrance is excellent to grab some fruit or produce after your work out. They have quite a selection. Great Customer Service all around for both establishments. read more

Moved to the area about a year ago and was excited to join. However it's seems that If you want your spouse to have an affair then this is the place...literally every person I've spoken to has had a friend (mostly married) somehow hit on or actual affair with a fitness trainer. Like it's part of the scene. I was told by friends who have been coming here a while that it was part of the culture of the club and everyone seems to be in agreement...ugh. Unfortunate that it is the only game in town and had to be seedy. I don't think all gyms are like this...so maybe just a known part of wanting to work here? This is the worst place to be ever. I will never go here again. The tennis coaching is horrendous, and there isn't a welcoming atmosphere.

Unfortunately, the MAC takes advantage of the lack of competition and charges high prices for admittance. Most of the customers are able to afford the price, but student prices should be lower. Also, some of the staff working behind the snack bar could use an attitude readjustment. Other than that, the equipment appears to be well maintained and the locker rooms are on the cleaner side of the spectrum. Would not recommend if only in town for a bit, but long term it is one of the better options. read more

I've tried classes, the pool, used the machines and the spa in this athletic club. Let's start with the classes, if you are new to a class your not going to get any special treatment from the instructors, it will come all from the other people who go to the class (they should get a discount for letting you know what to do). The pool may be salt water but it is always murky to me and smells of chlorine. You still get it in your eyes and it still smells on your skin. As far as the women's locker rooms go, I have seen mold on the floor of the showers and around the soap containers in the showers even after they so called clean them. You do have to change in an open area because they only have 2 stalls with doors unless you want to go out near the pool to change. The fitness machines are somewhat dated (treadmills, stair stepper, elliptical etc...) but well maintained. The spa is beautiful and well worth the money (all extra fee for the spa). This is a great gym! All ages, sizes and fitness levels are welcome and accommodated. The staff is terrific - knowledgeable and helpful. The diversity of classes and equipment is impressive. Something for everyone. Machines are well maintained and the place is immaculate. This is the best deal around for health and fitness. Rates are reasonable with senior citizens discounts. We can't recommend it highly enough. Big membership special now so message it's a perfect time to check it out! read more

Our family loves the Manchester Athletic Club and enjoys the programs, classes and early morning RUN FIT. We all belong and go there many times a week. The parking is easy, nice people at the front desk and membership is a joy to work with - our town is lucky to have the MAC and we've been members for 10+ years. I joined as a visitor just for the long labor day weekend. Really well equipped facility with high quality tennis courts, clean pool, whirlpool, steam room and sauna. Did not do machines but looks like a solid set up. Staff were super friendly and the overall vibe was positive and focused on good sportsmanship. If I live nearby this would be my gym. read more

I had been a MAC member on and off for over a decade. Finally got aggravated enough to quit for good last summer after the staff was inappropriate with my child--swearing and making disparaging remarks in front of her and refusing to escort her safely back to the "Gymazing" child care room from their parking lot play area. This was the last straw for me, and believe me, there had been PLENTY of straws with this place: * Kids membership (and extra $40, on top of the $85 I paid) promises up to 2 hours per day of supervised fitness and age appropriate activities. In reality, the MAC offers you a 2 hour window from 9-11am where you can drop your child in a field in the scorching sun with a couple teenage staff members and zero programming--my child would be sitting with the others, under the shade of the trees, waiting in a stupor! Oh, and if it rains, they "can't accommodate" your child anywhere in the vast club so they cancel and come get you out of your fitness class to take your child home! * You can make a "reservation" in the Gymazing child care room for your child but this room is designed and staffed for infants and toddlers--again, zero programming for school age child. There's no transparency in the reservation system, so lots of favoritism from the overworked surly Gymazing staff and they tend to fill up the available "spots" with the MAC staff's kids that are all comped memberships in exchange for their moms teaching a class at the gym. And since Gymazing is not fully licensed by the state, the staff is required by law to come get the parent out of their fitness class to change a diaper, etc. For the money they charge, you'd think they'd run a properly licensed child care facility--but they cut corners to make a profit. * The pool is tiny, overcrowded, not all that clean and the teenage "lifeguards" are texting and yawning and snacking while on duty. Not a safe pool for kids. * Fitness classes are jammed into a tiny yoga studio space, you have to literally fight for the old step benches and free weights, and then risk clubbing the person next to you in the head with a barbell when you extend your arm. Even the class instructor (who was awesome!) was fed-up with the place and encouraged us to complain to management, which we did, to no avail. * The workout gym floor and yoga studio floor is filthy--it literally crunches when you roll out your yoga mat! The MAC is only still in business because it is convenient. But when it comes down to a safe, healthy place for your kids--I'm willing to drive a little further for that peace of mind. Too bad, they could have a great place but their management is pathetic. read more

Ive been a member of many gyms over the years.. The MaC is in need of many improvements, if they are going to charge their premium rates... 1. No ventilation in the locker room. this is a real health concern 2. Rugs in the locker room, always very damp and smelly 3. Tennis courts never have working score keepers, always broke, missing numbers, numbers in backward, etc etc..Ive complained, nothing happens, etc.. 4. I was told I can suspend my membership for a few months if I desired to come back for an easy re-install. this service of leaving me in the system would cost $15.00/month.. So, I cant come in the gym, but they are still charging me $15.00?? This is outrageous, Planet Fitness full-membership is $10.00/month! 5. The walking area behind the tennis courts, is very cramped, I understand the need to optimize playing area, but, there is almost no room to walk behind there. need a little head room so you dont hit the Steel beams. The gym represents very little value for the membership fee.. they have become outdated in regards to competitive gyms that are out there. The MAC needs to lower their rates and management needs to realize the needed work around the gym to make it a place worth a members time. read more

9:37pm on a Friday night (they close at 10pm), front door locked, no one at the front desk, can't get in so I went home. Are you kidding me? I wanted a VERY quick workout (had a heart attack in October, they can only be so long). Almost a year since my last update and holy cow this place still annoys the devil out of me. Too many things to mention and I've spoken to others who have the exact same strong complaints about this place. $80 a month, please be open when you say you're "open". Gotta start looking into driving further to a YMCA or something. So frustrated with this place. Terrible. read more

The equipment is in good shape. I only use the cardiac equipment and occasionally the gym. Front desk staff's attitude is the best thing going for them. Always helpful, care about your situation, and greet you and say good-bye. On the down side, there is no soap or towels in the locker room. The new shower head broke about a month ago and it's just being left broken, and although I've been given lip service about these things being remedied, they haven't changed. The soap situation was supposed to be corrected this past summer. I have actually managed a health club in the past, and leaving the locker room in this incomplete state is a wasted opportunity. It leaves a poor impression even if everything else is OK. I hope the management of MAC will get its act together soon and invest a little to create a lot of value. read more

As the general manager of the Boston Lobsters tennis team (World TeamTennis) in 2013 we moved our pro team to the MAC. From our experience in building a temporary stadium, accommodating construction and seven very busy nights in July as our host site the staff was phenomenal and very supportive. Manchester Athletic has a great family feel to it. There is everything available like basketball, tennis courts, outdoor pool and playground for the kids, a phenomenal cafe/snack bar, and they even have those awesome Technogym treadmills from Italy. If you want a clean, well managed place to get it all this just might be your answer. read more

Awful gym. Rude staff. Do not have loyalty to their costumers. Would not let my daughter practice basketball by herself at age 14 when she has been going there for months to do so and when I wanted to cancel my membership the worker still expected me to pay. Disrespectful. read more

The Hatha yoga instructor was good. Unfortunately the session followed a Power Sculpt class and the floor was filthy with sand and grit. In addition, the room was freezing. Both those items severely impacted the practice. If the MAC wants to offer yoga, it needs to deal with these two items effectively and consistently. read more

MAC is a great club! The staff is wonderful, the club is clean and there are so many options at the club! I take classes at MAC and they are wonderful and are all included in the membership. Because of this I have tried a lot of new classes that I have never had the opportunity to take in the past. They have everything there! You will not regret joining this club. read more

I really enjoy the Zumba classes at the MAC. best instructors in the area in my opinion. Water babies is the best deal I found for my granddaughter and pool is nice and warm. Highly recommend swim lessons at the MAC. Employee energy is upbeat. Happy to go and get my workout started. read more

I've been a member here on and off for 6 years and my feelings about the MAC have always run from feeling ambivalent about it to really disliking it. It's convenient, that's what's best about it. When you walk in to drop off your kids at Gymazing whoever is at reception doesn't even look up and acknowledge you or your child. If she's having a conversation with another employee, they can't be bothered to pause and say hello. And it's the same when you pick your child up as well. It's never made me feel very comfortable or confident about leaving them. It's also very difficult to schedule your children for times you want and they seem to start closing areas off an hour before they close. If your kids are there from 11 to closing at 12, some areas aren't even open to them. And too many times I've picked up unhappy or crying kids because they've either been hurt when staff hasn't been watching or just ignored. The locker rooms and fitness equipment seem dated or often malfunctioning (showers have not been working properly for about a month now so you either freeze or burn yourself, pool had to be closed recently because it was cloudy). The MAC just seems full of unhappy people - unhappy members who are complaining and staff who often respond less than civilly. Not a fun place, and all at a premium. It'd be nice if the management could see these reviews, that they get an average 1/5 stars, and make some positive changes. read more

The MAC is a great club and I really love it. I think some of the reviews on here are either bogus or they are just unhappy people. The staff at Gymazing is incredible. My daughter gets so excited about going there and calls out to the staff by name. They always say hello to her and she gets more than enough attention and care. The fitness classes are great, especially if you get a certain instructor :) They have added new classes that are challenging and up with the latest trends. They offer swim classes for children, tennis lessons for children, camps in the summer and there is a great cafe. I have taken tennis there and have no complaints. The front desk is always friendly and greets us upon arrival and departure. So basically it's a great place to go and work out and bring the kids and everyone is happy. The only reason I didn't give them 5 stars is because there is a parking problem but I really don't know if that's anything they can remedy. It's just a popular spot which proves that more than just ME enjoys going there! Come on people, you can get a warm up on your walk to the gym (excluding those carrying little ones) read more
