Not EVERYONE lights up their yards, but most did, and some were so over the top with lights we'd hate to see their Duke energy bill. It CAN get busy right before Xmas, but seems to taper off after. It took us about 15 minutes to get in the hood from Alderman due to the line of people moving in from both directions. If you can park across the street and walk (if its a nice night) that may be a good way to explore as well!! Kudos to the hood on an excellent holiday display!!

Until recently, I actually thought it was a proper municipality, due to its size. Stretching west to east from ALT 19 on the Gulf coast to Lake Tarpon and the Oldsmar city limits on the east. Then, spanning from Dunedin's northern border to Tarpon Springs; that's a lot of land! Historically, the town has been called by many names: Bay St. Joseph, Yellow Bluff, Sutherland and then finally Palm Harbor. Back then, Palm Harbor and all of Pinellas was still part of Hillsborough County and quite sleepy outside of small fishing and citrus industries. Today, over 57,000 people call this town home, and the city boasts a moderate nightlife, most of which is confined to the historic downtown area along Florida Ave. between County Road 1 and ALT 19. Small indie shops, bars and delicious restaurants line the sleepy downtown streets and can get a little rowdy at times during the weekends, but usually quiet down by midnight. The most exciting thing going on in Palm Harbor is the brewery scene. To the east, Laugerhaus sits a stone's throw from Oldsmar's western city limits, and boasts some of the best German and Austrian grub in the entire area. The owner, of the former Hops Restaurant fame, brews up traditional German beers, as well as American flavors. To the West, closer to downtown, is Stilt House Brewery, Palm Harbor Brewery and the brand new de Bine Brewery--all of which are outstanding. There is not much in the way of beaches in Palm Harbor though, which is unfortunate due to the town's position on the Gulf coast. However, within Palm Harbor's town limits is Crystal Beach (a sleepy town within a sleepy town, if you will), where a small "beachy" area can found. Crystal Beach is interesting because they have a post office, but no home delivery. Residents travel to the P.O. to pick up their mail. Overall, a great place to go eat and have some drinks, but not exactly ideal for living, especially with some of the property tax rates, which climb as high as $4,000 a year in some sections. Most of the town feels like one big-ass suburb to me, outside of the historic downtown area.

There are signs directing traffic and telling you which route to go, since it can be confusing. It's impressive the amount of work that goes in to coordinating all these houses and getting everything together. There were definitely some very clever displays, and this is a good way to see them all. There's also a music section where you tune to a specific radio station and the lights dance to music. Technically this is only supposed to go until 10pm, but we got there just around 10pm and the majority of the houses still had their lights on. Some had turned them off- understandably - but we were able to see most of the lights and get lots of pictures. Plus, there was a lot less traffic than I imagine their normally is. So if you want to see the lights but spend less time waiting in traffic, try to go closer to 10.
