Cash only? No thanks. It's NYC though so it's common for restaurants to ask for cash only. Only wait- it's not a restaurant... it's a doctor's office. They push products on you and tell you your condition is worse than it is. At my first appointment, Dr. Chien said I had plantar fasciitis. At my second appointment, he said I have achilles tendonitis. Okay... He said I would have to wear a cast on each foot for three weeks each or six weeks total. My feet were in pain so I went ahead and bought the foot splints and plastic-shower-contraption-slippers to cover my feet so that they don't get wet (see pictures attached). My pain temporarily felt better for a day but then they felt worse and then my entire body ached from this "treatment". It was incredibly uncomfortable and annoying to shower with that weird plastic slipper. It was difficult to walk at all. The cast wrappings on my feet were so itchy so that I ended up cutting it off myself. I have been seeing another podiatrist and feel much better. I also ordered a foot massager on Amazon which I use every day and bought new running sneakers and my feet feel great. Bottom line: pushy, shady cash-only, the receptionist is not friendly. P.S. read the other low-rated Yelp reviews and see how they attack customers. That's not how you do business. I brought up the low-rated Yelp reviews in person and the doctor went into a long tirade about how they are written by fake trolls. Sure... because I checked their profiles and it checks out. Another con: I disliked how much the doctor talks. I want to be in-and-out of my appointments. That's not the case here. read more

Dr. Chien is the best podiatrist ever!! Whenever I have any issue with my feet, Dr. Chien is the doctor to see. You can count on him to carefully evaluate the cause of the problem and make things right. I came in to see him because I banged my foot again. I wasn't sure if I fractured any toes but my foot was very bruised. Dr. Chien took X-rays in the office and made sure nothing was fractured. Thank goodness, no fracture. One of the problems with "younger" doctors these days you find in Chinatown is that their demand is too high. During my first visit (Friday 4:30pm) I was frustrated with waiting 45min and left, booking an earlier appointment. My second visit (Wednesday 11:15am), I had a 25 min wait and just as I was about to leave, I was called in (from overhearing a conversation in the waiting room, I went in ahead of another person's 10:30 appointment). Cash Up Front policy - this is very common with a lot of offices in Chinatown. My guess is that they either do not want to be cheated from patients who don't pay their bills (and don't hire a collection agency), and/ or simply haven't or won't set up a concise billing system as training takes too much time/ money. If something seems sketchy, I would call your insurance carrier WHILE at the office and conference them with the receptionist. Onto the Doctor's care. He literally and personally spent over an hour with me (staff still needs to be properly trained to take X-Rays). His thoroughness and ability to explain things is pretty personable, especially if you're Asian and/ or have a technical background (Engineering). I have a good feeling about my next follow up visits, but the biggest tip I'd have is to make your appoints early and bring cash (and get an itemized receipt for FSA/ HSA reimbursement). read more

my custom molded orthotics are heeeeeere! ladies and gentlemen, the time has come. training season has begun. after walking in my new orthotics for the recommended length of one week, i finally tested them out on the treadmill tonight for a run. i was on cloud nine, because i literally felt like i was running on clouds. i forgot how good 4.5 miles can feel. running hasnt felt this good since september 08. dr chien knew exactly what adjustments needed to be made for my orthotics to minimize the pain in my feet; the man is wonderful. and even though his specialty is in foot surgery, he has a passion for educating the masses about proper feet/ankle wellness. "it's where the big bucks are," he joked. if your insurance sucks and doesnt cover orthotics like mine, see dr chien; he outsources them to be made in queens so is able to charge only $420 (which is relatively inexpensive. oh, and TOTALLY WORTH IT!). he also informed me that any minor adjustments that needed to be made on the orthotics could be done in his clinic in a matter of minutes. thank you, dr chien! thanks to you, i am training for my first half marathon. t minus 7 weeks - GO ME! read more

Since last September my right root has been hurting, which I believe consequently caused me pain in my right knee. I started working in the city and I thought the pain was caused from the additional walking. But I remembered feeling the same pain back when I was an avid tennis player frequently (Nadal got nothin on me!). I ignored the pain for a while until my good friend Pearl (who makes a mean guac) started telling me about Dr. Chien and how great he was. So I set-up an appointment, which I surprisingly was able to schedule for the next day, AND on a Saturday. That was the first sign that his office would be convenient as the office is open on Saturdays as well as late nights on Tues. and Thurs. It's really convenient to get to as the office is right off the Canal St. stop on the 6. Dr. Chien is super friendly and very energetic. I've never had a doctor spend so much time explaining to me what was going on, using skeleton models, charts, diagrams, x-rays. And as an engineer, who loves to know how everything works, I really appreciated his thorough explanation. I went in to see Dr Chien yesterday (I actually found him through yelp) for some pain I've been having in the ball of my foot resulting from a broken ankle I suffered a couple of years ago and have been dealing with for over two years. I generally hate doctors due to some bad experiences I've had - especially in NYC hospitals - where you often feel rushed through your exam and don't receive proper attention, because the waiting room has been filled with patients etc. But the doc was extremely knowledgeable, personable, energetic, funny, attentive, and just generally awesome. The woman at the front desk was actually really easy to deal with, I'm not sure what this smlyc poster is talking about. But from my very first impression when I called the office and she called me a few days later to reconfirm my appointment, I thought she was exceptionally polite and just plain nice. Also, I believe it is standard for doctors offices to ask for SSN in order to follow up with deadbeat patients who don't pay their bills. Anyway. I got to the office. Signed in. There were patients before and after me, but there was virtually no wait time. Dr. Chien shot some x-rays, watched me walk, quickly diagnosed my problem and we'll be following up with an orthodic to hopefully take away the walking pain issues. A couple of my xrays came out funky and useless so he said he wouldn't bill me for them. But yeah, all-in-all an incredibly pleasant and comfortable experience. Great guy. Highly recommend. Dr. Chien is the best podiatrist I have found in NYC! I wish more doctors were like him. He is very warm and friendly yet professional. He is attentive, patient, very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. Just imagine a Chinese Dr. Oz for your feet and ankles, and you have Dr. Chien. He is very thorough and took his time to answer all of my questions and made sure that I fully understood my diagnosis and treatment plan. My foot problem healed just like how he predicted during the first visit, and now I'm wearing my heels again! The office is very nice and clean, and staff is friendly and helpful. I appreciate that they make an effort to keep their appointments on time with their cancellation policy. Every time I have gone there has been little to no wait, which is a slight problem because I can never really read their amazing magazine collection. Their location is convenient, right above the Canal Street subway station, and they have night office hours (closing at 8PM on Tuesdays and Thursdays) and Saturdays. This is my first yelp review. I've been tempted to write reviews before, like when I got food poisoning or bad service, but never actually have because, who really cares enought to do this? This broke the seal. Overview: unprofessional office, unprofessional doctor. I was given a 15 minute appointment and then the receptionist called me back to schedule a 30 minute appointment because i hadn't been there in 6 months. This is only insult to injury considering what followed. I waited 40 minutes for my appointment when the doctor saw me, he was in the room for 10 minutes and said I would have to schedule another appointment, that the procedure I needed people didn't just hop into, he couldn't do it then, he didn't have time, that he was afraid he wouldn't do a good job in a short amount of time. When I insisted, he asked his receptionist if he had time for the procedure and she said "It's 12:07 and the 12:00 appointment is here." He didn't seem to mind when it was 11:53 and I was in the waiting room since 11:10 for my 11:15 appointment. He had the nerve to tell me it wasn't his fault I was late. I explained what time I arrived and that his receptionist had told me he was running late. He promptly said "Oh, I didn't know what time it was." Did i mention that I waited in the hall because the terrible top 40's music was so loud it gave me a headache? And when I asked her to turn it down, she thought I said up, and I said no, down. She must have turned it down so slightly because I couldn't tell. She didn't even take "Will you call my cell when he's ready, I'll be in the hall" as any indication she was making patients uncomfortable. When explaining that to the doctor he said "You should have asked her to turn it down." I did!!! This place is a joke. It's clear he is after the insurance money by rescheduling appointments which is cute and all, but let them bleed some other cash cow. I had a great experience here. My foot started hurting all of a sudden and I was about to leave on a backpacking trip in Central America. I started looking for a good podiatrist/magician who could cure me in time. I stumbled upon Dr. Chien's recommendations and decided to schedule an appointment. Dr. Chien is very thorough. He quickly diagnosed the problem, did a couple x-rays to make sure, and administered a shot. He was very conscious of my timing and did what he called an aggressive treatment on me. He wrapped my foot and put me in a boot, and asked me to check back in a day or two before my departure. I did as planned and to my surprise, I had no pain or any issues at all once he took the wrap and the boot off. I was back to perfectly healthy in just a few days and in time for my trip. Amazing! I should add that I hiked a volcano in Guatemala for 1.5 hours in each direction only 5-6 days after this experience and experienced absolutely no issues with my foot. I would highly recommend this office if you are having issues with your feet and need someone attentive, knowledgeable, and understanding. P.S. They take insurance, but only take cash for co-pays. It'd be great if they upgraded to credit cards. P.P.S. I didn't love that the receptionist called me afterwards to attempt to schedule another appt for a check-up. My co-pays are expensive and I mentioned that I don't want to come in if everything was fine. Dr. Chien is a foot geek and I mean this in the nicest, most complimentary way. He, like me, likes to get to the bottom of issues, treating causes, not symptoms. He is extremely knowledgeable and passionate about his work, which shows in his bedside manner. If you ever wondered why, ask him! He will break it down for you. I was immobilized by back and foot pain for six months. Dr. Chien noticed I had been wearing the wrong kind of orthotics, which was worsening my plantar fascilitis. After getting properly fitted, he made me jog around the office. It was like getting new legs. I've also been getting steroid injections, which hurt like hell, but actually seem to work. I can honestly say I owe him my life back. One Caveat: Orthotics can take up to 6 weeks to get back to you. In most places it only takes 2. Mine came back in less than two, which had never happened before according to the doc. To address complaints below: -24 hour cancellation is standard for any doctor, massage, etc. appt. -Paying in cash upfront is a huge pain in the ass, but I get it. It's Chinatown. Nobody take credit cards, let alone insurance. Eventually, the money does come back to you. All in all, the treatment is well worth weathering the complaints. Plus, they are usually open until 7:30pm and have Saturday hours. read more

I went to Manhattan Podiatry due to a problem with a bone in my foot (well the skin above it) getting irritated due to playing a lot of ice hockey and to see what I could do about it. My foot hurt so much that I could barely skate. I was paying out of pocket so I knew it was going to be expensive. I searched on yelp to find who was the most reputable and due to the reviews, and I chose to come to Manhattan Podiatry because of the overwhelmingly positive rating. Once I arrived, the doctor was courteous and nice. After examining my foot, he watched me walk, and then suggested that I get an X-ray because there could be a fracture that was causing the pain. The X-ray was over $100 dollars on top of the payment for the visit. I asked him if that was absolutely necessary and he said yes, to make a proper diagnosis. After the X-ray, he took a look and said that I had no fracture, but I had a problem with an enlarged bone in my foot (that was obvious and this was the reason I went to him in the first place). He told me that it was only going to get worse and I could either stop playing hockey or spend hundreds of dollars to get custom ice skates. He said the only way to solve the problem was to operate and to shave the bone down, but that wasn't possible because there was a tendon going over it. Because of the bone growth, soon it would interfere with the tendon, and I would have feet problems and foot pain for the rest of my life. I was floored. How do you respond to that? Then he pointed to the X-ray on another part of my foot and said "That's interesting". Usually, you don't want a doctor to say "that's interesting" without explaining himself so I inquired about his comment when he didn't follow up with anything. He said that it was lighter than the rest of the bone. When I asked what that meant, he replied "I don't know, but it's something to watch out for." Wow. Thanks doc. I just paid you over $300 dollars to not know what you're talking about. I thanked him and left knowing I was had. Next week I went to another doctor for a REAL opinion and learned that bone grows when constant pressure is put upon it in order to protect itself. The way to stop it is to relieve the pressure. No surgery is needed, just protect the bone with corn pads. I could play hockey until I wanted to stop. When I asked about the tendon that would cause foot pain for the rest of my life, he doctor told me that there wasn't a tendon there, and took my finger, put it on the bone and showed me. Don't go to this amateur and go to a real professional. read more

I've been to many doctors in my life and no matter how hard you look you will not find a better doctor than Dr. Chien. Easily the best medical experience I've ever had and the best podiatrist in Manhattan. Ignore the troll reviews here and Go! There's a reason why his competition is writing fake reviews about themselves and here, just sort by date and see for yourself. I saw Dr. Chien, "the foot whisperer" as someone wrote here, for a sever ankle sprain. A neighbor who noticed me limping around insisted that i see " her man " Dr. Chien. She found him through a mothers' support group from which hundreds of moms and their kids, and husband are his patients. I understand why. Dr.Chien is a beautiful person inside out. He is very friendly, knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and generous with his advice. He is very personable with the best bedside manner which put me at ease the instant i met him. He appears younger than i think he is which is a good thing for a doctor because he practices what he preaches. Most importantly, he communicates medical information the best of any doctors I've seen. I felt like i was back in science class with an excellent teacher. During my first visit he eased my nerves with well timed interjections and humor. He actually listened and didn't rush me. The "foot whisperer" even correctly predicted that my ankle wasn't broken as i would stop panicking. I couldn't imagine getting around the city with crutches. X-rays were done in the office, a BIG plus not having to go to a radiology center. Btw, the was my first xray despite having seem podiatrists over the years for orthotics and numerous running injuries. Dr. Chien reviewed my xray with me in detail, another first for me. He confirmed that i didn't fracture my fibula bone and also went over other things like my overpronation. He told me many things about my foot that my previous doctors had overlooked. The front desk is very friendly and informative. They checked my insurance policy before my first visit and confirmed with me how bad my deductible policy is, damn Obamacare! Thankfully any of my non-covered expenses including my custom running orthotics (the best pair I've ever owned) were very cheap here. The front desk is always happy to see me which is rare for medical receptionists from my experiences. A word of advice about medical insurance, I've been to several doctors in NY which said they accepted my insurance only to bill it and me out of network later. One of them was my previous podiatrist who has all 5 star reviews, many of which was filtered, so beware. Dr. Chien is the standard for which I'm going to hold to all my future doctors. He is kind, compassionate, thorough, detail-oriented, and answers all my insane questions patiently. He is not money oriented and genuinely enjoys helping. I've been coming to see Dr. Chien for about a few years now, with various mishaps and problems. I have never had a problem getting an appointment, and have had great outcomes for all my problems. And now I should be able to run the Brooklyn Half Marathon in May. As much as many doctors would like to pretend otherwise, medicine is somewhat of a service profession, and it's nice to work with medical professionals who take their patients seriously, have fun with their jobs, and treat their patients well. A few years ago, when I was experiencing running problems, I was referred to see a podiatrist. I stumbled upon this office after doing some research and also chose it because of the location and proximity to my office. I have had bad experiences with doctors so I was not sure what to expect. As a hardcore runner, Dr. Chien has been a great help in getting me back to running with no problems. Dr. Chien is extremely knowledgeable and breaks down the problem / diagnosis to you in a clear and understandable way to ensure his patients know exactly what is going on. Dr. Chien takes the time to answer questions and listens to your concerns. He is also very open and honest about what he thinks is the best treatment and care to deal with your problem. Overall, my experience has been nothing but positive. The front desk staff is also great. Scheduling with them is always easy. They are professional, friendly, and courteous at all times. The doctor himself is fantastic: thorough, patient, actually listens to you and lets you tell your issues your own way (instead of walking in the door firing questions at you while never making eye contact and then fleeing the room within 90 seconds, the way so many other doctors do), and super friendly and funny and chill. I want to be FRIENDS with him. He himself deserves at least five stars. HOWEVER. The front-desk office policies are annoying and customer-unfriendly, out of step with my other service providers (even among medical providers), enough to make me take a star off the rating (considered making it more). For example: they are cash-only which IMO is bananas in the year 2011; they *require* your SSN to provide services; and they fine you if you cancel/reschedule with too little notice, which IMO is simply unacceptable as a basic customer-service principle. (They are not a four-star restaurant with a months-long waiting list that is providing a banquet table for 20 people for the night. Come on.) My review is way overdue- i suppose that's because Dr. Chien gave me the ability to walk again, so i let the joys of life take over! I was a wreck when i found Dr. Chien. But he literally dried my tears after properly diagnosing that i broke my 5th metatarsal- an avulsion fracture. He explained to me how this injury happens, what it means, how to care for it so it properly heals, and gave me all the tools necessary. Not just the boot, compression sock, crutches, but he taught me how to alleviate the bruising using a frozen spoon (this also works on hickies! haha) His compassion and humor healed me just as much as following his instructions and being in his care did. I am blessed to have found him. Around the same time i got hurt, someone else came in who didn't heed Dr. Chien's advice, and his foot had to be RE-broken to heal all over again. I trusted my doctor's rules, as i don't have insurance so i can't afford to screw myself up any further (his rates for the uninsured are very straightforward and fair- he doesn't want the extra money from you returning over and over- he wants you to be healthy!). The only thing i didn't do that he told me to was get enough sunlight WITHOUT sunscreen. The vitamin D converted in direct sunlight can knock a week off of your healing process if you let it. Another clever trick from this incredible doctor. Did you know he also teaches biology to middle schoolers? And he goes to the theatre? These are a few of the things we talked about (that also helped me stop crying). What i mean is, his bedside manner is suburb. Dr. Chien, his empathetic, beautiful, helpful staff, his skill, his guidance, and his faith in my health/healing were all with me every step of the way (pun intended). As a slave to fashion on the rough streets of NYC, I found that I could no longer wear my catwalk heels due to a sharp pain in my left foot. Forced to bury my Diva collection of shoes, I set out to find the cause of my pain as this was more than just a pinch from the wrong shoe. First, I landed at one of those all-in-one sports clinics in lower manhattan where some guy told me "eh, take this and R.I.C.E". I walked out with a generic boot that looked straight out of p.12 of the Haband catalog. Luckily for me, there was a gentleman that I worked with that gave me the info to Manhattan Podiatry - (insert love story here) All the things you want to know that are important about this place are as follows: 1) Making an appointment is a breeze. The front desk staff are astute and cute (as former receptionist for nearly 5 years - I know good stock). I have always received my reminder call which I appreciate because each year I seem to lose a brain cell in my memory bank. 2) Dr. Chien isn't what you would expect your surgeon/podiatrist to look like. Somehow he manages to defy the biological aging process which causes you to not take him seriously at first. However, he is extremely knowledgable about the foot (he is a surgeon) and I find that I learn something from him everytime I see him. Bottom line here - he knows what he's doing and talking about. 3) As a surgeon, he is aware of how things are connected, what they look like and how it all works. This is the guy to unload all of your questions on about your issues. Once I told him in 3 sentences what was going on, he was able to take x-rays and show me exactly what was going on and what I was feeling. Bam. Just like that. No guess work, no "hmm's", "um's" or "maybe's" or "could be's". After that, he gave me the Air Jordan of ortho-boots where I would not have to lean on the stress fracture I had - which was amazing. So I never had to put pressure on fracture when I walked. Talk about a hook-up. 4) From one foot being jacked-up, I over worked the other foot and ended up with some callouses. Dr. Chien shaved those puppies down and restored my sexy and ended alot of bedtime anger from my partner who had to suffer with my scaly, hardned feet. Honestly, this dude saved my relationship. Because of the adaquate care I received, I actually was able to continue my spinning classes and take up running. I thought for sure those days were done and I would end up that woman that was an exercise maniac until that tragic accident cause a 30lb weight gain. Nope - not here. Overall, I've been down with Dr. Chien for years and have left his number with people as a gift (when I left jobs, for Hannukah, Chinese New Year, Valentines Day) and have been thanked for it. I had a painful bump on the top of my foot for months. My previous podiatrist, Dr. Winston Wong, misdiagnosed me and scared me half to death. First he claimed my ganglion cyst was caused by my wearing bad shoes. Then, when my foot continued to hurt and I saw him again, he claimed the cyst "had hardened" and therefore, only surgery could remove it. He made this declaration without even x-raying my foot and referred me to a surgeon. Scared, I went to Dr. Chien for a second opinion and thank God I did. Dr. Chien did an x-ray and determined that the cyst could be treated immediately. He looked stunned when I told him about the other doctor's diagnosis. He told me that, soft or hard, cysts can be taken care of. He gave me an injection of steroids and the cyst has disappeared ever since. Dr. Herbert Chien is the best!! I was referred to him earlier this month by a few friends and despite reading a negative review here on Yelp, I went in. I am grateful I did because he really is the BEST, and has worked miracles so far on my foot and ankle. After starting my running season earlier this month I began to experience heel pain which Dr. Chien was able to promptly diagnose as plantar fasciitis. He was incredibly thorough in explaining why I got plantar fasciitis and the treatment for it. He went as far to show me visually on charts what was going on in the anatomy of my foot. He even had a plantar fasciitis chart and skeleton! He had the foresight to discuss custom running Orthotics to me for the long term treatment of my flat feet. I hear from my friends that the Orthotics are excellent. I was so comfortable with his personality and his thoroughness that I even disclosed to him an old ankle sprain on my other foot. I was happy to hear that it was still treatable because the injury wasn't as old as I thought. I've been to many foot doctors in the past and I can easily say he is the best one in Manhattan. The podiatrists I've been to before have been adequate but uncaring. It is hard to find a doctor that is so detailed and genuinely friendly these days. After my first visit, I actually texted 3 friends, 2 running companions, and my boss about him! And then came home and emailed my family about him. He's that good! I am on my feet all day-- standing on trains and walking for 2 hours a day, working as a preschool teacher for 8 hours a day (it's kinda like waiting tables combined with manual labor. YOU do that for a living and see how your feet feel!), and then coming home and running for another hour or more most days of the week. It's fair to say that my feet get heavy use. Over recent years, a combination of use, overuse, overall body changes and footwear issues have contributed to various problems, from minor and major blistering to discolored and lost toenails to a stress fracture, an ankle sprain, and persistent plantar fasciitis that made me want to give up and live out of a wheelchair in the mornings. I'd been to a few various podiatrists that had come recommended by friends or co-workers and they generally worked out okay, but i don't stick with "okay" doctors. I pay *so much* of my paltry income for health insurance-- I don't want "okay"; I want *great*. I don't want a doctor who shrugs and says, "you know, without an MRI, I really can't say WHY you're feeling what you're feeling, so why don't you just agree to this cortisone shot and we'll both go on our merry way..." (wall street doc, i'm looking at you...). I want my workday to feel good, and I want my runs to feel ecstatic. When they don't, I want to know WHY, and I want to know WHAT to do to make sure I have many more happy years in my classroom and in my running shoes. I am not into quick-fixes that will degrade my ligaments over time or other short-sighted "solutions". I want a doctor who will understand why my feet matter to me so much, and who will take the time to understand and solve their problems. Dr. Chien does. He talked to me first, and the listened a long while, peppering the conversation with questions and humorous interjections. He examined my feet and overturned some long-held notions i'd had about them-- I didn't believe him at first (I pay a lot of attention to my feet and thought I knew everything to know about them), but by looking at them, he told me things about my body that i hadn't told him already-- recent changes in weight, the kinds of shoes i'd been running in or working in, what my pinky toes probably looked like when i was younger, the kind of running i'd engaged in all my life, the injuries and stresses my feet had put up with, etc-- what he could figure out just from examining the exteriors of my feet was amazing. He was kind of like... Dr. Chien, Foot Whisperer. Or something. Anyway, after the initial conversation and the removal of the terrible callouses and blisters that had brought me there in the first place, he did the requisite x-rays. All my podiatrists have taken x-rays. Some of them haven't shown them to me. Most of them haven't explained them to me, beyond an "ah, yep, that's where the little break is," or, "there's no break. you must be imagining the pain you're feeling." etc. Dr. Chien showed me the angles of the bones, the spaces between them, the pressure spots these would cause inside the foot, especially given weight changes, and how these would, over the course of the movement of my feet walking and running, cause this problem i was currently having, that problem I had last fall, the other problem I had last spring, and that really terrible problem that had knocked me out of racing for most of last year. And then he told me what we would do to improve the current situation & prevent recurrences of past situations. He gave me more insight into my own feet and body mechanics than any trainer, running gait evaluator or coach has ever given me, and i feel so... optimistic! I literally got teary in his office, which made us both laugh in surprise. I couldn't help it! We folks who depend on our feet to get us through our paycheck days, we folks who run run to raise money for charities whose causes feel important in our hearts, or because running makes us feel most alive-- we really, really need our feet to feel good. Thus, we really, really need great podiatrists out there helping us to take care of them. Dr. Chien is that great doctor you've always wanted to help you with your feet. He may be a young and fairly casual-seeming guy, but make no mistake: dude knows what he's doing. I really cannot recommend him highly enough. Also, his office is super-easy to get to by train-- literally right off the canal street nrqwjmz6 stop. Very very sketchy doctor and office.... I went last month based on yelp reviews and desperate to figure out my foot problem. 1st of all, I waited over an hour. 2nd paid $130 out of pocket for X-ray which I found weird because they claimed they accepted my insurance for the office visit (why aren't x-rays provided, called my insurance and they do pay for x-rays) it seems like the doc is trying to make off the book cash (ONLY CASH) he told me some ..... yeah, sketchy.... They also made me sign some form... trying to cover themselves... After these expensive x-rays, he diagnosed me and said I have to be immobile for 1 month for it to heal... Fine, I'm willing to do the treatment. I called back in a week for a doctor's note so I can work from home and Dr. Chien called me and said it was "common sense" that I start the treatment and then do paperwork with HR... so he's NOT writing me a note. Spoke to my employer and said they need a doc's note, seems common sense to me that doc's note comes first then treatment, especially for something that is known. I called back yesterday for a doctor's note, I'm still waiting... I didn't waste $170 for 1 visit and my time for nothing.... Oh yeah, btw if I wanted a copy of the x-rays it cost $15... it just never ends.... Called again today, and receptionist wants me to come in to the office for a note, are you serious? I'm very disappointed and really wished I never visited this office! I am willing to invest the time to fix my foot, but 80% of me feels like this doctor/place is going to ripe me off further... mb charging me for a wrap, or shoe, or weekly visits... ridiculous! Just stay away! Apparently, Dr. Chien kept pointing out that I wanted time off from work, so he assumed I can start treatment first with cast and crutch, then put in HR paperwork later while using crutches to get to work until approved from employer. True, i've been trying to figure out my foot problem for a year and i went to several doctors. When i told him that, he said the other docs are gaming the system. I never really thought of that, as my goal is to find a doctor that can figure out the problem and to treat it. The "DJ review" appears to be bogus for a number of reasons: "DJ" appears to have had only reviewed once since creating a yelp profile in 2009; the complaints listed are not reflective of the below patients from Feb. 2009 to the present. Further, if the accusations were true, why didn't this individual signed his or her name and report the doctor through the legitimate route?! Frankly, if I were Dr. Chien, I would sue this person for defamation of character! My sister and I took my mom (she's 74 years old and have had a bad experience with a foot doctor back in 2007) to see Dr. Herbert Chien for bunions; callous and corns affliction. Unlike most Chinatown physicians, we didn't have to wait hours in the reception area. The doctor even provided a translator to ensure my mom has a chance to articulate her discomfort and pain. I chose Dr. Chien because of all the great reviews listed on the Internet. And guess what? He is exactly as the reviewers portrayed him to be: nice; kind; knowledgable; patient and thorough. He was also the only podiatrist to x-ray my mom's feet to ensure that he didn't miss anything. My mom was so pleased that she quickly agrees to see him again in three months --and that's saying a lot, given that my mom's the type of person to run in the opposite direction when it comes to seeing any type of physicians. I went this office early last year with plantar fasciitis. Nice and friendly doctor but it seems like either the doctor is ignoring or is knowingly creating these questionable billing practices. They are not very transparent about their billing practices. They were very demanding about getting cash upfront. That should have been a red flag. If I didn't pay them at the time and setup a followup visit, they would call me, like a collection agency demanding payment without checking with my insurance, even though I said i would pay them. They would also demand payment upon entering the premises. I was a little skeptical about their billing practices. The office was not efficiently run. When I asked for an invoice for the services to provide to my insurance company, the receptionist (it seems like all they do is make appointments) said they do not provide invoices and receipts. I've never seen an office operate so poorly. It took several months before the information is provided. Also wanted to charge me for xrays done at the office. No longer a patient. Needs to get their professionalism together. I found myself another doctor a couple of blocks away who provided a better explanation of what he was charging and how he was billing and my foot got cured. Searching for podatrists in NYC, Manhattan Podiatry comes back as the #1 place in NYC overall. Now, I'm a skeptical person. But I figured... why not? I'll give em a shot. So here I am to give my very short review of the place. Best doctor office I've ever been to. Extremely nice, extremely informative, accurate diagnosis and treatment, extremely reasonable prices. Convenient location (right off the Canal St Subway stop). End of review. I can probably say tons of good things about my visit, and Dr. Chien... but I'd rather respond to some of the other reviews. It makes me *angry* that people have to sift through fake / asinine reviews just to get good medical treatment. I made my Yelp account solely to make this response. I'm a real person. Send me a message. If the negative reviews have you on the fence about this place, let me be the deal breaker. Some of the negative reviews are so silly. ... 1-2 stars, just for a $10-20 early cancellation policy? From the notice they gave me: "Since 2003 we have implemented this policy to eliminate overbooking patients. This is a common practice to avoid costly down time when a patient does not show up for an appointment. Overbooking is the reason why there are long wait times at many facilities. (...) This policy has virtually eliminated all chronic no-show patients thereby making our schedule more reliable and punctual." That is 100% reasonable! I literally can not understand why any one with half a mind would not agree with this. Even if you do miss the appointment, you pay what, $20 bucks? Also, practically every medical office I've been to has something like this, except it's like $70-$140, and they require it be 24 hours notice in advance. And like they said, their schedule is awesome! I was able to make a same day appointment, and I didn't have to wait 20min -1hour in the lobby like previous doctors. I'm glad they have that policy. To the complaints about cash: Would you rather find a office that accepts a card, or pay half of that cost in cash and get better treatment & service? Yeah, that's what I thought. They disclosed the prices of everything I would pay that day (over the phone!) and told me upfront they just accept cash. Again, most reasonable people would appreciate the benefits of this approach over the alternative other places subject you to. That aside, if it was an "absolute deal breaker for you", you should have gone to a different doctor. It's like if I reviewed Mexican food and I don't like Mexican food. If paying in cash was a "deal breaker", why did you bother going? It definitely shouldn't be the foundation of a review, and it's a completely unreasonable complaint. To the demands about them "demanding" a follow up: He obviously wants you to come back in to check up on you to see if your health is improving! He *suggested* I come back in, he didn't *demand* it. Honestly I didn't even know doctors were *this* nice. I'm not saying this didn't happen, but based on your other comments, I'm saying most likely this wasn't the case. So yeah, I'm basically saying it didn't happen :D To the person claiming to have bad Arch supports: Where are the pictures you said you were going to post? More than a year has passed since you said you were going to do it. The office even responded to you: where is the rebuttal? Basically I wholeheartedly recommend this place. I was refused for treatment because I did not want to give out my SSN. There is no law saying that I need to give out my SSN to doctors office!!! No other doctor has ever refused treatments because I did not give out my SSN before! It seems that they have very standoffish attitude. Any review short of 5 stars is either fake or written by someone who does not appreciate quality service. As many people are, I am also not a big fan of doctors, especially of those who spend a mere five minutes with you to explain something you already know. But Dr. Chien changed my opinion about this. I have an embarrassing skin situation with my feet, which I have been dealing with for years, and I used to be ashamed to wear sandals in the summer. As a girl who enjoys the hot summer beach days, this is quite devastating. I decided to take care of this problem once and for all. I was unsure if I should see a dermatologist or a podiatrist for my issue. Through self-diagnosing (via Google), I decided to seek a podiatrist, and I am glad I made this choice. Dr. Chien is NOT your average doctor. For one, he is young. He is also vibrant and does not emit that scary medical professional aura. He took a look at my feet and understood the situation - he was able to explain to me what my problem was and what my options were to cure this problem. In a matter of months, the length of the treatment, the skin on my feet is like baby butt's smooth. OHMYGOD. I couldn't ask for more - I can finally wear sandals in the summer and don't have to hide my feet without socks on. On top of that, I am also a newbie runner, literally from couch to half-marathon, and as you can imagine, I will be prone to injuries. Simultaneously, I had a custom-made orthotics made, since I seem to pronate when I run. (Dr. Chien was able to see that through my X-Rays, which I was excited to see them develop right in the office.) They are pricey, but they are custom-made, so it makes the price reasonable! They are made to cater my feet, and boy, are my feet happy. You really have to pay for quality. I absolutely adore these orthotics, and they are durable. I frequent the office for orthotic repairs and occasional shin splits or calf strains, and I am surprised the doctor is not tired of seeing me. Haha. But overall, friendly receptionists, young and knowledgeable doctor, short waiting time, and accommodating scheduling; these are qualities of a medical office that one ask to find in all doctors' offices, and I found them all here. As response to one of the negative reviewers, you really missed out on a great medical doctor. You wrote a negative review before even seeing him, so I don't know how sound your review is. Picked this place due to its proximity to my apartment when I broke my foot this summer. It was a shock at first and to 100% trust someone else in how to best take care of your broken foot was very difficult for me at first. Dr. Chien told me that I would need to be in a cast for two straight months, no slacking. I was angry, and I definitely researched other locations and doctors and methods to see if there are any ways out of it. But now that I am 3 months post recovery, I am super happy and thrilled about the result. I have zero complications from the incident. No pain or sore even with my aggressive weekly physical activity. I can not thank Dr. Chien enough. Just wished that I was more trusting of him earlier on. I would return again for orthodics.
