Got the take away lunch fish n chips for myself and calamari for the person with me. They were both average as far as deep fried seafood goes. I paid extra for the tarter sauce and it was pretty good since its homemade. The French fries were larger sized potatoes and tasted pretty good. I usually like ketchup with my fries but that isn't really served here. I think ketchup period is kinda an American thing. It's considered tacky to ask for it. Lol. Oh well, I added a little salt and they were pretty delicious! They also sell a variety of fresh seafood and even offered recipe cards for ideas on cooking the fish you buy. The staff was quick to help and the wait wasn't very long. We ate across the street at Manly beach which always offers incredible views!

There's nothing like a slab of barramundi on the barbecue, and I've had some of the best from the Manly Fish Market. Give them 24-hours notice and they'll bring in whatever size you need, and prepare it so you're down to marinating and cooking - yum! And they're not short of advice either - we wanted to replicate a dish we'd had in Thailand, and they were able to advise on just how to marinate without overdoing the cooking in the acidic lime. Of course if it's more the instant fix you're after, this is a cafe too, where the chef will whip up a dish from your chosen piece of fish, or your can switch to take-away and grab your portion with chips to enjoy outdoors. For me though, the true plus of this place is that its the next best thing to getting to the fish market in town at 5am when the boats come in - they'll do it for you.

Fish and chips

Nice take away place for classic fish and chips. The use hake to make their battered fish. They also have grilled fish if you. Don't like deep fried seafood. Sauces are an additional $2.50 per container.

Cross between a fishmarket, factory wholesaler and retail shop, Faros Bros offers fresh seafood at…read morea fraction of supermarket prices. Not many people can afford to pay for parking at Sydney fishmarkets or make a special trip to Pyrmont to buy fresh fish. This place brings the fish to you! When you walk through the plastic flaps and into the giant cool room, it's evident what is for sale. Fresh fish and all different kinds of seafood lines the walls, so close you could touch it. But you don't, because there are people in gumboots, gloves and hairnets waiting to pick out the produce of your choice. There are people in the back gutting fish for the shop, so if you want to buy something whole, they can fillet it for you on the spot. To get an idea of price, the most recent visit I bought salmon cutlets for about $18 per kilo. A bit cheaper than the salmon fillets at $24 per kilo. Beats supermarket prices in the salmon stakes by at least $10 and makes eating fresh fish an affordable habit. If going at Christmas or New Year time, or any other holiday period be prepared to wait in a queue outside. Then be prepared to take out a whole garbage sized bag full of seafood for your holiday celebrations. Faros Bros is always busy and at super busy times there is a ticketing system. Parking is a bit hairy, with only 6 or so spaces in front of the shop, and on street parking a little difficult. There are now more spaces on the other side of the road, but take care when looking for a park as it's in a one way street with cars crossing from one lane to the other depending on which direction they are going.

The unlucky Crustacea are my flavour of the month right now, after I discovered how easy it is to make your own Singapore chilli crab sauce, which I admit I I have been craving after since I went to Jumbo's in Singapore earlier this year. (There is a great SBS food video and recipe that's easy to search for, if it's up your alley too) Googling for seafood outlets that are on my way home from work, I found the yelp reviews straight away. Easy for me to get to when swinging home through Marrickville. It's true you wouldn't know it was a seafood shop from the outside, but the fact you can very rarely get a spot in their tiny car park is testament to the fact a lot of people shop here. Park on the opposite side of the street to avoid the frustration of squeezing in. Think of something from the great deep blue that you can munch on and they probably have it here. Oysters, all of the Oysters!. Scallops on or off shell. Cooked yabbies - make yer own crawfish pie! Thinking I might do that next time I go. Fish of all species, Prawns cooked or raw, Octopus, Squid, and the one thing I came for Mud Crab. They have 2 tubs, one for boys and one for girl mudcrabs. I'm not up on the ethics of Mudcrab choosing, so I went for the biggest one. That sucker was alive and kicking. Trussed up of course, but that's the thing about crab.. fresh is best and you have to dispatch that little beggar on your own. She cost me $19. and she was delicious. There is a ticket system to get served, but for some reason I got bumped up the queue. I dont know if there were any tickets left, but the staff were immediately helpful and attentive. Prices seem pretty good, and everything looked fresh as a daisy. I dont even remember there being that fishy fish shop smell. Faros Brothers is totally worth of my half century review. If you're a local, go and see them the next time youre in need of a seafood fix I dont think you'll be disappointed.

We were in Sydney for four days in early May and had heard so many good things about the new Sydney…read moreFish Market that we decided to check it out for ourselves. The new building is huge, modern, and incredibly clean. During our visit, we stopped by Getsashimi and ordered a variety of sashimi, including salmon, otoro, kingfish, and oysters. Everything was exceptionally fresh and literally melted in your mouth. We enjoyed it so much that we came back the very next day for more. If you're a seafood lover, this place is definitely worth a visit.

Wow, what a difference a year (and a change of location) makes! Visited the "NEW Sydney Fish…read moreMarket" on Jan. 22, 2026 - opening day at its new "modernized" location just across the water from the original location. And what a sad disappointment it was. The new location is. . . well, OK, newer. Other than that, it lacks the funky, stinky authentic charm of the original. Reminded me very much of a nondescript shopping center food court, but even more crowded. Although much larger in square footage than the original, the lines for each stall are horribly longer. Maybe it was just opening day snafus or a serious lack of planning, but the demarcation of the lines for each stall was a complete mess. Sometimes hard to tell which line was for which stall and sometimes you were shoulder-to-shoulder with people in line for a different stall. Oh, and to pay the new rents the price$$$ of everything have gone up. You can actually go to a comfortable sit-down seafood restaurant and pay the same, if not less, as what you will spend for the privilege of standing in line, juggling paper containers of food and drink, and praying that you might find a table at which to eat. Speaking of which. . . it seems the new location actually has fewer tables than the original. People were circling about like hawks just to snag a spot on the stairs to SIT. Nothing like juggling seafood and beverages on your knees to make you ask yourself, "Why the f#@k am I even here doing this?" As I sat doing just this I stared at the closed original seafood market across the way with nostalgic longing. Adding to the pandemonium are the hoards of slow, elderly Chinese tourist groups in their matching colored outfits (or state-issued uniforms ?), each member posing for selfies with fish [aren't there fish in China?], and clogging up the nearby tram station. So much for "progress?"
