I was excited to trade my house for a condo and especially excited that it had a newer heat pump…read more Well, there were problems almost immediately and the pump had to have refrigerant added. I wasn't pleased with the service experience of the provider who came out and sought replacement options from several companies, one of whom was McCleary. I lost the urge to replace as the existing pump continued to work and I thought maybe the recharge would last a few years. Well it didn't. I had to have another provider come out to recharge the pump and decided to get additional estimates. I recontacted McCleary and they promptly provided updated estimates for two options we had discussed previously. The type of refrigerant had since since changed, of course, so the price went up for everything but what can you do. I really wanted a Mitsubishi unit because they're so efficient and quiet but I explored conventional options from other service providers. In the end, McCleary provided quick, thorough, and complete responses to my questions and the people I spoke with were friendly. McCleary also offered a Mitsubishi unit like I wanted for what seemed like a reasonable price. The day of the install was interesting because I wasn't expecting the outdoor unit to be so huge and it had to be shipped on its own truck. The neighbors aren't sure what to make of the thing or why it's so gigantic. I'm not sure either but it is effective, quiet, and my electric bills have dropped about 30% even though we are keeping the winter temperature higher. The fellas who did the install were incredible: they worked very quietly, were so respectful, very friendly, cleaned up fastidiously, and were just great. If there was anything I would have changed, it would have been to have a better orientation on how the thermostat operates -- but they did say to call with any questions. The thermostat, at my request, is a simple one. I was told it's programmable but I don't want to program it and just want to set it and forget it. Nonetheless, there are settings that I don't understand fully -- for instance, does "Auto" switch back and forth between heat and cold? Can you turn the fan on to run continuously (for air filtration purposes? or for dehumidifcation?) while still having heating and cooling available? The manual is extensive but not terribly useful. I deliberately waited to write this review to see how the unit works in both hot and cold temperatures and it's pretty remarkable. The condo just warms up - not quickly like in a house with a gas furnace - but steadily. The unit operates for long periods of time -- which is useful for air filtration and dehumidification -- but is very quiet. The hyper heat units don't require auxiliary heat and somehow manage to pump out hot air even when it's 0 degrees outside. The air conditioning feels frigid and just sort of smothers us with refreshing coldness. It's delightful. The unit is much, much more quiet than the former heat pump but is still audible during heating season, especially the reversing valve when the unit goes into defrost mode. The unit is virtually silent when the air conditioning is on. Overall, I'm happy. I contacted McCleary a couple months ago to locate the serial number so I could claim an energy efficiency credit for taxes but haven't had to contact them for any other reason. I believe they'll be responsive if the unit requires servicing but the installers indicated this is one of the most trouble-free and dependable heat pumps made and helped me feel confident about the purchase. We'll see but so far so good. This review is only the second one for McCleary on yelp but there are nearly 1,000 on Google and they're all positive. McCleary was one of only two Mitsubishi "Elite Diamond Contractors" in my area when I selected who to contact. McCleary was the only contractor I found that had only positive reviews.

Unit working fine now and the cost was very reasonable for the service given. Thank you!

BUYER BEWARE -- Heat went out in the middle of the night, and I could not get my regular HVAC guy…read more Called M&T Mechanical in the morning (8am) and they agreed to come and look at the problem which I believed to be a clogged fuel line. They arrived as indicated and looked at the oil furnace and ended saying that I had a "blown" motor. They'd be back after getting one from Ace Hardware. Got everything working again, which was good. When I got the bill ($700), I was more than surprised at the expense. Later, I checked the Ace Hardware website (and at the store ) which said the motor (Beckett 21805) was listed at $124.99 (Home Depot has it for @$87). I was willing to pay more for the emergency call but to get almost a 300% markup on the motor ($125 marked up to $350) and an oil filter (marked up to $100) is GOUGING. Normal industry rate is 50% markup. So, the long and short of it is: BUYER BEWARE when it comes to M&T Mechanical. You will DEFINITELY pay more than fair market and more likely be scammed by a company that's more interested in a big payoff that will cost consumers. Again, BUYER BEWARE when it comes to M&T Mechanical--it will work but will leave a hole in your pocket and bad taste in your mouth. If desperate for service, call elsewhere.
