We had a quarterly event with 30 people and the 6 planners decided the theme was to have a "magical night" so I went online and ended up talking with Manny. We had a couple good conversations over the phone, came up with a price that worked for us both and boom, he's in. We had a couple conversations and he came to the event location (someone's house) to set up the evening before. The 24 who didn't know what was going on loved when he went from table to table doing magic while they were having dinner. After dinner we all sat down in a large den and Manny did 45 minutes of magic and stories we all loved. I highly, highly, highly recommend Manny the Magician for your next party! We had children from the ages of 2 to 5 years old. I thought they might be a little too young to have their attention held but was I wrong! They were thoroughly entertained as were the parents and other adults. I loved watching the parents of the children secretly looking at their children's faces while they were watching Manny and hearing them say they're were completely captivated with his magic! He also had the children interact in his magic tricks. It was so heartwarming to watch the kids raise their little hands to come up and help or answer questions he asked them which they happily answered so eagerly. Manny's stage presentation is so professional. It made the whole experience even more magical because I had a magic stage set at my home! My neighbors commented that they so enjoyed hearing the festivities going on at my home and when I told them that we had a magician they said "how cool is that!" I found Manny d'Mago last minute through the yelp feature where they send out your inquiry to a few magicians and they contact you. Manny reached out to me and asked me to fill out a form. He was the only one that requires this and I hesitated. It was a hassle to be asked to fill out a form instead of just answering my inquiry directly. But for some reason, I just went ahead and filled it out. He booked a time for a call and still stalled on giving me any information. Because I am also an entrepreneur and know of sales, I decided to go along even if I was already feeling impatient. On the call, he gave a great spiel that he's a PRO, was featured on AGT and that we will have the most amazing experience. He also offered a free zoom call so we can sample his magic. He also said that he will give a 50% discount because I came from yelp. He said the original price is $800 but he will do it for $400. It is obvious he was using sales techniques. The other magicians gave the same rate of around $400, without the spiel that it's "originally $800". Our family is a huge AGT fan and love the magicians we've watched on there, so that bit sold us to move forward. In the zoom call, the couple tricks he sampled were pretty cool. There was not much showmanship but I thought of course it's just a small sample over zoom. When it came to making a decision, I decided to go with Manny because of the time he put into getting into connecting in a call and doing the sample zoom. The others with tons of amazing reviews were no longer available. It was just him and another one with availability and both of them didn't have a lot of reviews yet. So I thought why not give Manny a chance since he's the one who put in the time. And he promised that it will be an amazing show. And of course because he has been on AGT! The Good: *He had a couple of tricks that impressed the kids. One (out of many tricks) amazed me. *He had my son involved throughout the presentation that made him feel special. Things to Improve: *During his sales call, I asked if he can do a Stitch theme, which is the party's theme. And Manny expertly did a misdirection and said, "yes I have a costume". True, he came in a costume, a standard magician costume. Nothing about the show had to do with Stitch. It would have been fine if that expectation was not set from the conversation. It would be much better if expectations were set more accurately. There was a lot of hype and over promises, while the actual show turned out underwhelming. * He came 10 minutes before the agreed upon show start time and took over 25 minutes to setup. So we obviously didn't start on time. Not a big deal for me since the venue is our home, but worth mentioning to others who have time limitations. *The magic tricks would have been more enjoyable and impressive if the way they were presented and delivered was better. It was dragging, flat and didn't hold the audience attention. There were only 4 eight-year old kids present including my son, the birthday boy. Two middle school aged kids and the rest are parents. But my husband saw the kids looking bored and took that as a confirmation that it's not just him, and left the presentation mid-way. I also noticed a few others just resorted to their cellphones. *A bunch of the tricks is around a small red ball that's supposed to go missing and you're not supposed to see or guess where it is. I unfortunately kept seeing the red ball in his hand. It wasn't even concealed well. At first I thought it was part of the act and waiting for a reveal of the actual trick, but there was no reveal and it was supposed to be unseen in his hand for it to be magical. My other son also saw him take the red ball from the cup several times, when it's supposed to be undetected for it to be magic. Rating: One star for being available at the last minute, another for being kind and pleasant, 3rd star for making my son feel special on his birthday. Really appreciate these! Overall the show feels amateur. Again that's okay if expectations were set accordingly both in the sales process and in the pricing. There might be others who will like his style. But to me and my guests it came out flat. He over promised and under delivered. I take some responsibility because he did give a sample and showed before hand how he presents. Its my fault that I ignored my experience and went along with his great sales skill and promise of an amazing presentation. I also didn't do my homework and just went with the excitement that he was in AGT and assumed he would be really good. Post-party, I checked his Youtube audition because of the disappointing feedback I got. And within seconds of his audition, Simon and Howie buzzed him out and got eliminated before he even finished his presentation. If you're considering hiring Manny d'Mago, do the sample session. If the energy and pacing works for you, then try it out. If not, then I suggest to shop around some more. read more
