This place is the worse my mom was there from Mid March until May and what I thought was going to be a good place for her turned out to be a nightmare the staff minus a few were very rude and I think that because my mom was able to speak up for herself it made things worse because she said ( They think I'm a problem) so I tried to do my best to quietly complain but it didn't work and things really seem to go down hill after her insurance lapsed for about a week the I spoke to manager and told him she doesn't have money unless Medicare pays and then I was told about the difference between being placed in a Maryland facility as a DC resident it created more problems because the manager told us everything that wouldn't work but didn't tell us anything that would help. read more

We lost a loved one and the care provided was less than the minimum. they do not take care of the needs of the patients. Especially the weekend staff is the worst, not trained well, not attentive, they didn't bring any water to my dad. No doctor on staff, nurses always seemed not knowing what they are supposed to do, The only positive was the rehab trainers they seemed very good and helpful. The nurses said they cannot lift him or move him because too heavy!!!?? isn't that their job? overall avoid this place as you would avoid the plague . read more

This facility is not where you'd want to leave anyone you love or care for. Patients have to wait 30 minutes or more for assistance to go to the bathroom. The food is horrible and there have been complaints of mice. Please avoid using this facility. read more

The staff don't want to be questioned, they back each other up no matter what complaint you bring to their attention or to the attention of the administration office. The Kaiser represented that works there need to be FIRED as well as all of the "nursing staff and admin office". DON'T SEND YOUR LOVE ONE HERE!!!! An investigation need to be done on every nursing facility under Promedica or Manor Care. Kaiser need to stop their working relationship with these incompetent facilities. It's a money grab for them. I question if the nurses have scam degrees or certifications. They are so disattached from the career they choosen. One nurse name Mamie stated she would never place her mom into a nursing facility". She also shaved my father's face hair completely off without getting permission. Another nurse was cussing that she had just changed a patients diaper and he fing pooped again. It's crazy, when we started asking for names the whole staff flipped their name tags backwards so they won't be held responsible. Which at the end the management team was more concern with my family being upset with them, but not his staff doing their jobs. Stating they have shortcomings but it's not need to get upset. (WHAT!!! my father is a human being, not a doll) When you get emotionally because of the unprofessionalism on their behalf, they flip it and say you aggressive, or why are you yelling at me or I'm afraid. So, I'll be the first to say that most nursing home facilities in DMV are average at best (I've been to many in MD and some DC). However, Manor Care's Wheaton scores higher because of their stellar staff. They took great care of my loved one in particular SallyAnn, Angela and Annabelle. The physical therapy and OT staff rock including Sirah, Shu-ling (sp?). Their front desk staff, social worker and activity manager are welcolming and responsive. The food was good -- even one fish dish I'd order in a restaurant. One star off for the condition of wheelchairs (who's hidding all the footstands) and some other equipment. But overall, an above average facility. read more

If they had below zero ratings this place would get one. The rehabilitation staff is great but if you or your loved ones require any nursing needs run and don't look back. My mom had a visible fever and there was not a working thermometer in the facility. They were reading her temp as 97.1-98.3. When I went to the 24hour CVS to purchase a thermometer her temp was 101. Mine you this was 1am. A nurse was about to give my mom the wrong meds if she didn't ask what the pills were. This place should be blown up. 1) Nurses are give and take, they are friendly, and for the most part helpful. Not so much at the nursing stations, they are too busy on their phones for you. 2) The smell of Piss is overwhelming. 3) Be thankful for the PT. They are the best part of this place. 4) It is quite a bit on the ghetto side. Do try elsewhere first. Use this as your last resort! I have been recovering at this facility for the last 8 days. I must say that before I arrived here I read reviews for this and several other facilities. Before I arrived I was a bit concerned about what I would find. What I found was the total opposite of what you expect when talking about a rehab facility/nursing home. The nursing staff at the Skilled Nurse's Station is PHENOMENAL!!. They are all very attentative to the residents, super friendly and engaging. They were all fantastic, but particularly Connie my Nurse and Tarja the Aide took excellent care of me. The aides that I encountered were helpful and friendly as well. I got a feeling that they enjoyed their jobs and interacting with residents - if I asked for something they were right there. The other OUTSTANDING thing about this facility is the Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy team. I loved them and the hard work they pushed me through. I can't say enough good things about Ben and Narzeen!! Thank you both for your help in my recovery. I highly recommend this facility for you or your loved one. read more

DO NOT SEND YOUR LOVED ONE HERE!!!!! My father has been there for three weeks and I am not satisfied. They do not answer their phones. I have called up here numerous times. In the instance that I am able to get someone on the phone, they transfer me, and then no one answers the phone. When prompted to speak to the Nursing Director, Facility Manager, Reception Desk, or pretty much anywhere else, no one answers the phones. No one checks their messages, or they do not have a voicemail set up. How am I as a concerned family member supposed to call to find out what is going on with my family. He has vision problems and has asked for assistance during meal times to at least position the food in front of him, and let him know what is being served. They have a problem with this. He has asked to not have to sit in the uncomfortable wheelchair for long periods of time, and they have an issue with assisting with that. Someone contracted Covid while at the facility. I still have not received a call regarding the Covid issue. However, my father received a call on his phone to let him know what the issue is. I received a call in the middle of the night this week to say that they do not have an emergency contact on his account. After midnight, receiving a call requesting this information, that has been given to them several times. Unacceptable. Mixing up the patients because they have the same last name. One being male, one being female. Unacceptable. Not allowing for visitors to come into the facility to see a patient. Unacceptable. Forgetting or losing patients because they have been moved out of their room to do other things in the facility. Unacceptable. I will be moving my father outside of this facility as soon as I can. And I would recommend that if you have someone there, get them sent somewhere else as well. You can't get better without the proper care and treatment. And I am expecting for my father to get better and come home. So with that in mind, it's a no for me for Manor Care of Wheaton. read more

I stayed at Manorcare Wheaton in July 2014 while recuperating/rehabbing from a total knee replacement. The experience was horrific; I'm still having nightmares. Indifferent, ill-trained & insufficient staff: nurses ignored the call bell (essential for post-surgery bathroom use) & carried on so loudly at the nurses desk it was hard to sleep. Aides dropped sheets on floor and continued to put the same sheets on the bed. Attempts to address/correct with supervisors failed to remediate. Nurses so beligerant when reported for not responding to call bell, meds or other issues that my daughter and friend stayed with me while I was waiting for transfer to another rehab faciltity. Athough transportation & bed available at other rehab facility, transfer request deliberately delayed for a day & night by Manorcare Wheaton "social worker" (an oxymoron if ever there was -- when I telephoned her to inquire into the delay in processing the transfer papers to other rehab center -- required for insurance reimbursement -- she upbraided me for contacting her, asked how I got her number & hung up). Equipment was broken: bedside swinging table tilted so badly that food & vase slid off on the floor & bed. Not one wheelchair had complete parts; no size-appropriate wheelchair was available. Filthy dirty and unsafe: staff threw sheet over water that spilt on floor next to bed (getting out bed after knee surgery is precarious under the best of circumstances); broken toilet which backed up & overflowed repeatedly -- at one point sheet was thrown over muck on floor & left for hours (multiple requests to clean only successful when husband arrived for visit); aide attempted to use feces-encrusted washcloth to wash (totally oblivious); communal shower room again with limited/broken equipment (and that only if you could hunt down an aide and plead with her to shower you). And the smell. Unbelievable. Indescribable. Makes port-a-potties smell like roses. I was afraid I would get an infection and/or fall & damage my knee the entire 4 days I was there. Issue with obtaining the correct medicines: never got all my meds in the 4 days I was there. Never got pain meds before PT (critical for success of PT). Never got correct thyroid meds. Roomed first night with psych patient who screamed from midnight to 6:30 a.m. because she too did not have access to her meds -- totally inappropriate for someone needing sleep to recuperate from the trauma of surgery. PT erratic, crowded, and room very limited in functioning PT equipment: patients stacked in wheelchairs waiting for PT, total time waiting counted as PT. Junk stacked up on flat "bed" so not accessible for heel slides, leg lifts, and other essential exercises. Total chaos, little supervision: rehab as an after-thought. Obstructions in hallway to PT room from construction work in progress -- pieces of carpet thrown over trough cut into floor -- safety issue for walker users in this alleged center for rehab. Food totally unrecognizable - even the oatmeal was inedibile, something out of Oliver Twist. Subsisted on packaged yogurt, Raisin Bran, and milk or stuff family brought. I reported Manorcare Wheaton to the State of Maryland Office of Health Care Quality; only got decision on lack of correct meds & failure to give pain medicine before PT because that could be "quantified" in the record. Thus, friends, have family take pictures and bring a notebook to document as you go, even though you may be in agony after surgery. The state gives nursing homes/rehab centers advance notice of inspection period, so you can figure how well that works for patient advocacy. The second rehab center to which I went, Sanctuary at Holy Cross, was heaven in comparison - clean facility; edible albeit institutional food; caring well-trained & supervised staff; timely & correct meds; organized rehab with plenty of access, working equipment & staff; handicap shower/bathroom for each room. What a difference. So, please, do your research on facilities before surgery; after surgery you will be totally incapacitated and at the mercies of monsters at places like Manorcare Wheaton, truly one of the ninth rungs of hell. It is several months after this experience that I can write about it -- it was that awful. I have full use of my wits, and other than the disability from the knee replacement, am fully functioning. I shudder to think what a vulnerable person -- someone who can't speak up for themselves or doesn't have family as advocates -- would experience in this facility. read more

I have been recovering here after a hip replacement surgery. I can't give this place the one-star review that one person did, and I certainly can't compare it with other rehabilitation facilities, but there are certainly a lot of negatives, and three stars are about right. The place suffers from a great deal of disorganization. Shortly after I was admitted, my room was visited by a dietitian, who inquired about foods I dislike, and I was favorably inclined because of this. However, while frequently my requests are honored, there have been enough instances of me being served something I specifically excluded that I wonder whether everyone in charge of preparing my meals reads that list of dislikes. (And even that was gotten wrong, slightly. I had said "oranges." I was asked "Orange juice?" and responded "Orange _anything._" Yet it seems to have been recorded as "orange juice" and I have been served orange sherbet, orange slices, and even with that notation, at least once even orange juice!) Tonight I was served coffee and milk as beverages with my dinner, despite telling them that I do not drink either. (A nurse's aide got me some hot water and a tea bag, so I could replace the coffee.) Other evidence of the disorganization: I was originally given one date for my release. Two days before that date, a physical therapist casually remarked my stay had been extended a week. But nobody had told me this! And if it hadn't come up when talking to the PT person, I might never have been told it until too late to tell people who needed to know. The call bells are extraordinarily sensitive, and unlike the ones in the hospital they do not light up or give any indication they've been pressed. So I've had nurse aides come when I didn't intend to call anyone, while on the other hand when I really wanted one it is often a long wait. And some of the nurse aides are very helpful while others are totally indifferent: I've often been served insufficient meals and gotten hungry 2 or 3 hours later. Sometimes a nurse aide will find a snack, and others will simply say "There's nothing I can do." When I came in, I tried to find out whether there were any computers available and was told no, but they had WiFi -- something useless to me because I had no way to bring in my own computer. A few days later, I saw a sheet referring to the "internet cafe" and asked about it, and someone showed me a room with two computers -- which is quite enough, as there aren't a lot of people in here who want to go online, so I've never had to wait for one to become available. Again, disorganization -- why didn't the first person I asked know they were just down the hall from my room? The reviewer who gave a positive rating to the physical therapists is right on, though I would also include the occupational therapists as well. The food, unlike what one reviewer said, is not uniformly bad. However it is very uneven. One meal can be as good as anything I might get in a restaurant (except for the tea, which is super-low in quality); the next meal might be almost inedible. read more

An elderly cousin had a fall and needed a rehab facility post-surgery and her doctor recommended Manor Care in Wheaton. I balked as my grandmother stayed at the one near Montgomery Mall a few years ago and it was revolting, but we were assured by her physician that they were all different and as this physician was associated with this facility she could monitor my cousin more closely. Little did we know that all this entailed was that the physician breezes in for 5 minutes once or twice a week and nothing more. Where to begin regarding the facility! For the prices this place charges, one would expect so much more. It is disgusting and the care is appalling. Went there numerous times to visit and I would not send my worst enemy to this place. The smell of urine was often enough to knock you dead. The entire facility has a dingy, unkempt appearance. Patients wander the halls unattended (some who obviously should not be on their own), while the staff basically ignored them. Every time I visited, I swear the same female patient was strapped in the same chair in the same spot in the hall looking lost and weary - I honestly wonder whether they ever moved her. Nursing help here runs the gamut of largely disinterested to downright nasty. When walking the hall, one can hear people calling for help and lights lit indicating a call button was hit, but they take their sweet time in coming, if they come at all. A stop at the grungy nurses station will reveal many of them standing around having a gabfest. Interrupt them at your peril. Rarely did they help my cousin out of bed for anything. In my many visits, I believe I saw her in a chair only once. Otherwise, she was precariously lying at the very edge of her bed. Trying to get someone to help her to the bathroom basically required an act of Congress. My cousin complained that she was suffering from diarrhea and no one would come when she called to help her to the bathroom, and that no one was cleaning her. When we questioned the nurses about this, we were told that my cousin was confused and that she had no diarrhea. Then we received a call two days later from another nurse to discuss the ongoing diarrhea that my cousin had been having for the last week...this after the other nurses insisted the diarrhea was nonexistent. We would get calls from one person telling us that my cousin was not eating. Then when we would show up and ask her nurse for that shift if her eating had improved, they would look at us like we were crazy and claim nothing was wrong with her eating. Then a day later someone would call to discuss her lack of eating and weight loss. There is absolutely no coordination of care at this facility, no communication about the patients in their charge, and the staff could not be less bothered if they tried. My cousin complained about her back being sore and that no one was cleaning her after she soiled herself, which the staff denied up and down and kept trying to make her sound like she was losing her sense of reality. Her health deteriorated and she ended up back at a hospital, where it was discovered that she was completely caked in old dried on feces and the filth had literally eaten a hole in her back. It took two nurses at the hospital to get her cleaned up and debrided and we were informed in no uncertain terms that there was no way that the staff at this facility had been cleaning her appropriately. A meeting with the caregivers at this facility was pointless. We took a family friend, who was a nurse and had been witness to some of this nonsense. The MC nurse that attended the meeting strutted into the room late with an attitude like her precious time was being wasted, doubled down on the fact that the care my cousin had been given was adequate and laughably asserted that the caked on feces and filthy hole in her back must have been the fault of the hospital (even though it was discovered within moments of her arrival there via ambulance from this Manor Care hellhole!). Our friend the nurse attempted to ask the MC nurse questions, but she would only repeat the mantra of nothing being wrong and any fault must be at the hospital. That was her story and she was sticking to it. Needless to say, my cousin did not return to this place. In my experience, the staff here is poorly trained, indifferent and often negligent. I am even more incensed that they spent more time in trying to convince us that my cousin was imagining things (such as her diarrhea, them not cleaning her and the hole being eaten in her back) in efforts to cover their own backsides, then doing their darn jobs. This facility is inexcusable. I would strongly advise anyone to avoid these Manor Care facilities like the plague. read more

The staff, what there is of it, is generally pretty nice. As long as you don't need much care, you'll get by reasonably well. They seem perpetually understaffed, especially at night, so if you need anything ( like urgent bathroom help ) you are out of luck. The call light is a joke. The staff is willing to help, but they likely have four other patients to deal with before they get to you. You don't like to crab at the staff, who are just overloaded, but if you are in a relatively helpless state, ( bed bound ), your stay can be a torment. The food is edible, but it's a good place to lose weight since it isn't very appetizing. If you have diet issues or food allergies, especially acute allergies ) you had better stay on top of what you get, since the staff seems to be ignorant of the content of the food. The PT and OT department is the exception to all this, and the high point of my stay. Great staff here that work you hard, but are attentive to your limits and leave you feeling like you accomplished something. Here you get more out than you put in. The first two days are the worst because you don't know what to expect and getting information from anyone is like pulling teeth. You'll probably miss a day's medication since they have to order it from the local pharmacy, and aren't allowed to do it until you get there and their doctor has reviewed your previous orders from doctors or hospital. After the second day, you more or less know what to expect and can start counting the days until you can leave.your best bet is to try as hard as you can to be nice to people even if you are upset. It may not get you speedier help, but makes it easier for the staff to feel better about helping you. Dana J. read more

One of the saddest most disgusting rehab facilities I've ever seen (and with two frail elderly parents, I've seen ALOT of rehabs). Even our two private, full-time CNA's that we would take to visit with my dad when he had to go here for a couple of weeks said it was the worst they had ever encountered. I guess they have a lot of very sick Medicaid patients who are basically residents here and the staff are overworked and indifferent. These very ill patients wander around shouting and yelling and looking lost while the staff ignore them. Other Patients are parked in hallways and also ignored, diapers go unchanged for hours so the whole place smells of urine from the minute you walk in, and they didn't have the patience to feed a whole meal to a patient who could not swallow well so the patient just had to go hungry. The nurses here have a sadistic streak and you must safeguard your loved one constantly. Best to avoid this place like the plague otherwise you are likely to catch the plague or worse here. read more

A truly terrible week-long experience for my dad. Low lights included them overdosing him on insulin (even after he and I explained the correct dose) leading to an ER visit, some really rough handling after a bathroom incident, really dirty bedding left in a smelly bag n his room for four days, and just a general lack of interest in doing anything to take care of him. More like a bad holding cell than a nursing home, I would recommend no one allow their loved ones to get checked in here if they can help it. read more
