Not like they need anymore rave reviews, but here it goes anyway! Tonight was my first time to Mantis. I only get a handful of massages every year (student budget #amirite?), and about 1/2 are full-price, while about 1/2 are Groupon massage deals (see student budget comment supra). Given that it is finals time and law school exams mostly make me feel like weeping--or eating 7 pints of Jeni's $12 ice cream--I thought, "Oh, what a perfect occasion to splurge." Seeing all the tremendous Yelp! reviews, I knew Mantis was going to be my treat. I had an appointment at the exact time I wanted within minutes. The online booking system for massages is what dreams are made of. Seriously. Came in and was immediately in love. The space itself is just oozing with perfection. So cute and clean and quaint and just... feels local... feels Austin... My "therapist" was Ash. She was the sweetest from the second I entered until I left. The massage itself was wonderful. Top 3 favorites ever. Again, I'm not like Donald Trump getting massages every week and I only go for relaxation reasons rather than "health problem" issues, so take my enthusiasm with a grain of salt if you'd like... but I'm an honest lady. *~RANDOM~* but, the music she had playing in her room just like........ made me the happiest. I almost sprung off the table about 5 times to grab my phone and Shazam some songs for later. Things like this are the small things that really, really count. If I ever hear cliche weird sounds or beats or gross things coming from a Songza/Pandora station during a massage again after hearing Ash's jams, I will be thoroughly dissatisfied. Another small thing that made me happy: she checked in about 3 times to make sure her pressure was good for me and nothing more. For some reason, the last massage I had, the lady wanted to talk about her entire life to me the entire time. Shhh lady. Ash made the perfect amount of conversation before the appointment began, during it, and after it. Yay Ash, you win. THENNNNNN to just put a giant red delicious cherry on top of it all, at the end of the entire thing Ash told me she was "new" and still completing her "training" at Mantis--never would've known... I was like "Whaaa?!"--so I got $10 off. Without asking or being prompted to book with her this way or anything. So nice. So lovely. Oh, and they have personally accessible water AND TEA available in the waiting area to just make things even better. I will be back. read more

I've been searching for 8 years across 3 cities to find a masseuse that I was compelled to book a follow-up appointment with after my first visit. Finally found Monica. I've had fantastic massages before, but this was just a bit extra on the therapy side, which is exactly what I needed. I appreciated her dialogue about what she was noticing and we tried to unwind my left hip and lower back, and her prescription of a foam roller to loosen things up for next time is something I can clearly feel making a difference. I cannot wait to get in there again in 3 weeks and see how much more of this misalignment nonsense we can address (seriously, I'm thinking about booking another one next week because I want that treatment again). read more

Monica is a life saver. I pulled a muscle in my lower back while weight training about a year ago. It never felt right after that injury, and it stopped me from working out ever since. I'm trying to get back in shape, but there was no way I was going to be able to exercise with this chronic pain. I saw Monica a few weeks ago, and for the first time in a year I was completely pain free! I also had a pain in my lower right ab area that had been bugging me for over a decade, and no doctor could figure it out (even with an MRI!!), but Monica immediately identified it as a ratcheted down psoas muscle. She did some work on it (hurt so good) and afterward I felt zero discomfort. I was almost in tears as I had forgotten what a completely pain free body felt like. She instructed me on some stretches I could do to help lengthen and loosen up that chronically tight psoas muscle. You better believe I'll be back to see her on the journey to getting this thing completely healed. Aside from Monica being awesome, the offices and massage rooms themselves were very clean, minimalist design, with comfortable with soothing light schemes. Mantis Massage, you're a gem! 60 minutes of deep tissue heaven with Ann Marie is just what I need after a long week. Every time I book an appointment at Mantis I wish I had booked a longer one. The atmosphere is so relaxing and friendly and cozy, not to mention it even smells blissful. Massages are worth every penny and they even have a rewards system where after a certain number of visits, you get $15 off a massage! This is one of my favorite businesses in Austin and I'm definitely a customer for life. read more

I started going to Mantis when it was just Kyra and I really loved how close it was to my house and Kyra was by far the best, most consistent, and well-priced masseuse that I had been to. However, my review now is really for Luci. Luci is the best messeuse I have ever been to! EVER!!! I have had so many different massages around Austin, including ones at really nice spas like Milk & Honey and Luci is the best by light-years, in my humble opinion. I sit at a desk all day and had bad posture in my earlier days which led to chronic back/shoulder/neck/arm pain down the right side of my upper body. I always tell masseuses this and emphasize that I would like them to only work on this but they always end up massaging other parts of my body anyways (and usually not that well). Luci is the first person that actually listened and spent almost the entire 45 minutes starting with my front chest area and working down every single knot in my chest, arm, neck and back (yes, only 45 minutes and she got this awesome review!). If you know anything about chronic computer pains, you know that it is usually caused by being hunched over and your back ends up hurting to overcompensate for your front not holding the right posture. Luci knew this and actually did something about it! I love that she did not hold back and just went for it. I hate it when masseuses treat you like you're rich and you can come back every week. I WILL come back if you do a good job. However I am definitely out of the market for any new masseuses 'cause Luci is my girl from now on! read more

I've been to Mantis Massage seven times. I've never picked a specific person. I've always had an excellent massage. Maybe it's the work culture, or maybe it's their screening process, but they're doing everything right. Which explains why they're often booked a week in advance. That's my only complaint. read more

I get Thai massages bimonthly, which I love. I've also unfortunately experienced a gambit of crappy Groupon sponsored massages and uber expensive spa ones. If you want a deep tissue massage, go see Abby. I'm sure she does other styles, but her deep tissue was incredible. After 2 weeks on the road, moving and all that goes with that, my back was twisted and knotted pretty badly. I booked a 1 hour massage with Abby, and she worked it out. She's intuitive, knowing when to apply more pressure and when to release, and talked through the process to ensure that I was aware & comfortable with her approach. I couldn't believe how close this place was to where I loved until yelp. I would never be able to tell what this was if I were driving past it. You can book an appointment online and I was able to book something within 24 hours. The customized massage is the way to go. Catered to what is giving you the most trouble. I came in because my mid back was hurting so bad, I was bed ridden. Monica helped a ton. She was interested in understanding where the pain came from and asked a lot of questions. It felt more like a sports massage but I really enjoyed it. I never usually talk during my massages but I felt comfortable. She really knew her stuff. I always thought massages were the kind of cucumber-eyed, botanical face mask luxuries reserved for the nouveau riche. But now that I've had one, I understand the necessity of setting the body straight, especially when the world demands so much of us physically. I had the sweet privilege of getting worked on by Kelsey. She's incredible! She had an awesome tone with me during our initial consult, provided an extremely relaxing environment, and worked my muscles hard. She beat me up in the best way. It's a new year, and now I'm a new me. She was incredible at finding the trigger points of my pain, crunching and wriggling it away. I knew that I was going to walk away feeling better (and I did!). Kelsey finished by giving me tips on posture, stretches, and exercises to help my back pains. I'm going to try to get in for a massage with her every couple of weeks. I'm pretty convinced Kyra is magical. She has worked on healing me for the past several months and is a success! I walked around for years in a lot of pain. I thought it was normal wear and tear. Boy was I wrong! I initially came across her through Go Local Austin and then read her Yelp reviews. I took advantage of a Yelp deal and never looked back. I'm so glad I did--Kyra is simply the best. She is a woman with strong hands and a plan. When I first came to her, she devised a course of action to get me out of pain. It involved a series of appointments and now we are on a regular schedule. Be prepared to be seriously impressed--the lady is STRONG. Give her a shot. Not only is she professional and takes the time to explain and tailor a plan for you, she is pretty cool too. I always seem to book appointments at the last minute, so I have had treatments here from four of the therapists. All of them are phenomenal, highly skilled practitioners. Each has provided effective deep tissue treatment and advice that has helped to alleviate injuries. The environment is clean and comfortable. It is very easy to book an appointment online, and the therapists are all very friendly and helpful. They always provide as much pressure as I can handle, which I have found to be rare. I had an amazing massage with Sparkles for the first time yesterday. I've had many massages before since I have chronic pain, but it was the first time at Mantis. Sparkles was so great. I couldn't recommend her more. I gave her a five-second overview of what I do at work (it's a physical job) and she knew exactly where to start and found all the knots. OMG! Kelsey is a muscle whisperer! I get massages pretty regularly and need deep tissue. These 5 stars are really for Kelsey though. The location and front area are fine. I'm not going there to be wow'ed by the looks, i'm going there to get a massage and my eyes are closed the whole time anyway. I highly recommend this place and it was extremely affordable. She has even suggested stretches and exercises that have been tremendously helpful in between sessions. This is the kind of place you go if you want some real results. While the atmosphere is very relaxing, it's not a frilly/ extravagant Four Seasons spa. I'm not very savvy with certifications for therapists, but it seems that Monica must have something more advanced than other massage therapists I have seen in the past because you can tell that she is highly educated. Lets start with the good. Karey Green was absolutely fantastic. Best massage EVER. Prices are reasonable for even a solid massage, but what she did for me was remove my pain for almost 3 days. As somebody who hasn't had a pain free day in over 10 years let me tell you miracle workers. Now the bad, after your first massage make sure you reschedule immediately. This place books out fast. After at LEAST a year and a half of not having a massage, I finally decided that being 8 months pregnant I should really treat myself. I made an appointment with Laura Gilpin. Before making the appointment, Laura had told me about the Yelp deal and so I took advantage of that, thank you! I wasn't sure what to expect from a prenatal massage but Laura was very knowledgeable and we discussed some of the techniques she would be using before we started. The experience was exactly what I needed. The massage was very beneficial and it was wonderful that she was able to give me a massage that was on par with a massage I would have when not pregnant. Overall: YES! No frills, get a massage because its a massage business and thats what you want. Bad: If anything, I would have to complain about the head rest for the bench I was on, it was facing down a bit too much and wasn't adjustable. Good: Such a great massage.
