This was my first massage in many months due to CoVid 19 but I needed one terribly and decided to try out the Airport location. I've gone to the Mantis location on South Congress many times. The process was seamless, and I was the only one in the shop. I felt safe, we both had masks through the entire process and it didn't hinder my experience. Becky was Fantastic - absolutely one of the best massages of my life. I had a lot of tension in my neck and shoulders and can withstand a lot of pressure (some masseuses hear me say this but still take a timid approach). I got a very last minute 30 minute massage set up with Becky (I think she's newish) because I had some intense tension coming from somewhere causing intense pain in my neck/upper back. Sufficed to say, in the short time we had, she had relieved a good bit of what was ailing me was sure to educate me about my condition a bit and give me some tips that might help alleviate my tension on the daily. i went here after looking at the ratings and since the rating was really high here and on google, i decided to book an appointment here with an advanced therapist. The pressure was too intense even after i had asked her to tone it down. The only good thing i think was my neck felt much better. Overall, it was not as relaxing as i wanted it to be. I've had occasional hand and wrist discomfort since finishing college. I sleep with a wrist brace and have learned stretches for when they get too sore. I'm new to Austin and picked Mantis because it had good reviews and was close by. A deep tissue massage with Ali now needs to be a more regular part of my routine, because my hands felt SO MUCH BETTER as a result. I got it done right before the weekend started, which was fortunate because for a day or two my hands felt exhausted, but after they recovered they weren't bothering me anymore. It made me feel that I'm not simply doomed to have increasingly achy hands as I age, but maybe with exercise and massage I can actually have a little more control. My hands are important to me as an artist and I also tend to put them through a lot... So this, for me, is a big deal. :) read more

I had known about Mantis Massage for a while; Kyra has been offering a special on a certain day of the month for musicians. While I never took advantage of that special, I did take advantage of a birthday special since I had been on the mailing list for a while. I set up an hour-and-a-half with Makala (she is not listed on the website's front page), and it was the first time in a long time that I didn't snooze for half of the session. Her tough New York hands really dug into my tough Texas muscles, and I realized that I have really neglected stretching. A day later, I feel like I have so much range of motion restored to me, with a whiplash injury flare-up reduced to nearly nothing and no more lower back discomfort. Great job, ladies! read more

I was well overdue for a massage, but due to Covid was a little reluctant to start looking for a new place to go. I have had many massages and a number of different therapists and I have to say that Becca was one of the best I've ever experienced. She was very welcoming and put me at ease immediately. Her style was like a cross between a deep tissue sports and Reiki/balancing massage. It's almost as though she has a 6th sense and was completely intuitive as to what my body needed. I can't say enough about these skilled folks. Huge shout-out to LIZ, whose work basically kept me upright and functional during a tough pregnancy. And I crawled onto Frankie's table yesterday with gluteal knots the size of golf balls -- gone in 20 minutes. Other folks have described this place as "no frills," and I guess it is, compared to places where there's someone there handing out cucumber water. But I think the space is cute, the rooms are peaceful, and the folks here know what they're doing and are cool humans. I never thought I'd become a regular at a massage place. Every therapist I've seen at this place has been excellent. The only bad experience I ever had was once when I booked a massage super last minute, and when I showed up, the therapist hadn't noticed the appointment pop up on her schedule. She took me late as a result and I think her nervousness about that affected the quality of the massage. But it was an honest mistake. I usually see an Advanced level therapist and I'm quite ticklish, so I'm really picky about massages. I've had 3 or 4 therapists here who were able to give me an excellent experience with hardly any tickling. The only bummer is my favorite ones keep moving away!! We recently moved from Austin, and mantis was our go to spot for massages. *Now that I've moved, I'm reviewing my favorite Austin places (since I'm gone, I'm not worried about competing with other yelpers for parking spots or places in line haha). Mantis has convenient online scheduling with text reminders and we used to take advantage of their package deals ($20 or so off massages). I was so pleased with my first experience at Mantis and plan to visit again soon. I am 31 weeks pregnant and have had 4 other prenatal massages that were just ok in the Austin area. Izzy was wonderful and used pressure in my massage. I feel like my other prenatal massage experiences were simply back rubs. This was a legit massage! I was so sad when it was over! I would have given 5 stars, however, my experience at this particular location with Makala wasn't 5 star worthy. I mainly take issue with attitude not service; and I do not expect for those to bend over backward for customers but I do expect to feel welcomed and at ease. I purchased a discounted mother's day deal for my mom, who is a massage novice and this was the first full body massage she had ever experienced. She was quite happy with the massage, however, I was not impressed with Makala's "massage table manners". She didn't crack a smile once, wasn't very welcoming, and for a first-timer such as my mom I feel that is a very important component of accommodation if this is the first time you let a stranger touch you. I'm sure the massage was fine, and my mom was happy being pampered that she over-looked all else. I had gotten a massage from Khammi at the S. Congress location just the day before and the attitudes between the two masseuses were vastly different. I also noticed that the front of Mantis Airport could use some TLC when compared to the new Congress location. In conclusion, I now know not to book with Makala next time but still love the price point and quality of massage that Mantis offers. read more

I had the ashiatsu massage, which was a surprise because I snagged the only appointment available that day. I was told that's what my massage therapist specializes in so I went for it. It was an hour deep tissue massage and I learned that feet can do more than hands. I was nervous and tense because I am not one who gets pampered often at all and I didn't know what to expect. I quickly melted into the chair and could have stayed there forever. I wear a wig as I have alopecia and I felt comfortable enough to take it off and receive a nice head massage as well. She is consistent and thorough in a way that I've not experienced with other therapists. I always leave my sessions feeling relaxed and loose. My experience at Mantis was absolutely fabulous. Mantis came highly recommended to me by many of my friends and I was experiencing some serious neck and shoulder tightness so, although I rarely treat myself to a massage, I decided it was time to give deep tissue a try. My therapist, Valerie, was waiting for me as I walked through the door, addressed me by name and led me to their super charming waiting area. She explained where the facilities were and offered me tea and water as I filled out the necessary first-timer paperwork. The office was beautiful, clean, and homey. Totally unpretentious. I felt immediately at ease. Valerie then escorted me back to an equally charming room where we discussed my issues and made a plan for conquering them through massage therapy. I felt like I was in very good hands as she discussed the benefits I might receive and the areas on which we would focus. The massage was great. I would say the experience ranged from total mind-numbing relaxation to "how-the-F-did-I-screw-myself-up-so-bad" pain (that's a GOOD thing, for the record.) All the while, Valerie checked in to make sure the intensity and pressure were what I wanted. Afterwards, my neck and shoulders felt so much more at ease. I was given a note with some handy self-care prescriptions (epsom salt baths, vitamin c, lots of H20) and some water. After I left, I received a personal message from the manager thanking me for my visit. Later, the owner, Kyra, sent me an email to thank me for my massage with *additional* tips for after-massage care. I will definitely be back again. This place is rad AF. read more

so noisy! i also booked a 90-minute full-body massage and half my body was never touched, how does that happen?? usually when they ask about areas that might need extra attention, you expect them to spend a *little* more time on it, not the entire time. i could also hear every conversation customers and employees had at the front desk which was really distracting, a phone kept vibrating somewhere, and the music would stop playing every 20 minutes so the massage kept getting interrupted to restart the music. this was my first massage all year, i was really looking forward to it, especially after so many positive reviews but the experience was very disappointing. read more

I get my massage done by Izzy and I can honestly say this amazing individual gives the most perfect massage that there ever was. Izzy gives so much care and precision to every single movement she applies in her massage. I don't get regular massages. It's maybe a once or twice a year thing, usually when some thoughtful person gets me a gift certificate. I've been to Mantis twice now, and while the first experience was good... holy cow y'all. I'd been suffering the usual aches and pains of a desk jockey who gets to the gym a few times a week, so a weird conflict of sedentary muscles and stressed muscles, duking it out for ownership of the most painful knots. I opted for a 75 minute custom massage focusing on my neck, shoulders, and especially middle back, including some trigger point therapy. My therapist was Taylor, who spent several minutes asking me about my health and overall fitness, as well as the usual "show me where it hurts" line of questions. You guys. She got so deep into my back. And here's the thing - I almost fell asleep. In fact I actually think I might've, as I'm fairly certain caught myself in a snore. But she was like a hydraulic press going absolutely medieval on some aggressively stubborn knots that I can only assume have been there since the Clinton administration (Whitewater was stressful too, kids). How can something that intense also be relaxing to the point of putting me to sleep? Mysteries of the universe. She also worked my legs and found some particularly nasty knots in my quads I didn't even know were there. That actually hurt, but the immediate endorphin rush let me know good things were happening. The immediate post-massage sensation was of utter relaxation. No soreness. Just lightness. Fast forward to this morning at the gym, and I felt it even more. I had range of motion, looseness, and an absence of pain. I felt I was able to focus more on the exercise than trying to mitigate pain or avoid certain routines because I just don't bend that way anymore. Now I just need to make this a monthly or bi-monthly occurrence, because even after just one session, I can tell the benefits are tangible and actually improve my quality of life. And in my albeit limited experience, Mantis is the best, most complete massage you can get in Austin. read more
