I have used Maple Leaf for spring cleanup for several years and was happy with their work. This year (2026) I was sadly disappointed in the quality of their work. Sticks were not picked up, drain pipes were not put back in place, and nobody came to the door when the crew was done to ask if we were satisfied. I waited several weeks before leaving this review to see if my sentiments would change. I read all the reviews before choosing to start my project with Maple Leaf and I took note of multiple negative reviews commenting on property damage and poor communication. I wrongly gave the benefit of the doubt to this longstanding and sizable business. In hindsight, I have regret for not listening to the feedback of others. I'm providing as much objectivity to this review as possible to help protect others from experiencing what I did. I worked directly with Joel (the owner) to make a plan to landscape a hill in the front of my house, where there are three fully-grown maple trees. These trees are in excellent health and are extremely valuable to me, as it is not possible to replace trees of this size. I made it clear numerous times in person and by email that I was concerned about the risk of damage to the trees, especially the roots. I received multiple reassurances that the roots would be fine and that the degree of excavating would be minimal. Several weeks after signing the contract, we still had not heard back from the company on a date for the work. I called several times and was assured that I would receive a call back when it was scheduled. When I noticed Diggeer's Hotline in my yard, it was obvious that work was being planned in the near future. I called the company again and was told that they would get back to me. I never received a phone call (although they allege that they attempted to call me once, the evening before they arrived). The next morning, my wife called me at work to inform me that a person in a bulldozer was tearing up the front hill. Nobody rang the doorbell or attempted to call us to let us know that work was starting. I promptly spoke with the worker on the phone and emphasized that it was essential that none of the roots be damaged. He informed me that he had already destroyed some "pretty big roots". In an effort to try to mitigate further damage, I paid out one of my coworkers to cover me mid-shift and rushed home. The damage was already done. The attached photos show multiple large roots that were shredded or transected right next to the trunks. Furthermore, he managed to gouge the trunks of two of the trees. The hydraulic equipment was left on my lawn over the weekend. After the first day, I spent three entire days working alongside the crews to ensure that the project did not cause additional damage. I dug holes, moved dirt in wheelbarrows, and placed rocks. Even while I was present, one of the workers decided to try to unload a truckload of mulch before removing my $900 tree from the bed. He decided to hold the tree in one hand and the bed in the other as it inverted. Unsurprisingly, he fell out of the bed onto the tree. I was assured that the tree would be okay, and it was planted anyway. I later saw that the trunk of the new tree had completely snapped. Another time, I noticed that the root ball of a planted bush was 3" above the ground. I asked for it to be planted properly and was told it was "good". The worker then stomped on the root ball to unsuccessfully push it farther down. I dug out the bush and planted it properly myself. The damage done was egregious. An assessment by an arborist confirmed what I already suspected, which is that the damage that was done was consequential, and could have destroyed more than 25% of these trees root systems. I had made an extraordinary effort to be proactive and avoid this damage by speaking to Joel multiple times and trying to be home so that I could relay my concerns to the crews before the work started. This nightmare cost me $12,538.78. I was not offered any concession for the extensive damage, the need to involve an arborist, leaving work early, needing to labor myself, or losing sleep over this. The best communication occurred when payment was due, as I received multiple phone calls in a day to pressure me to pay. I've been as objective as possible. Protect yourselves. I have a disability that makes it very difficult to do intense work for prolonged periods of time. I can count on the crews clearing the driveway and walk at pretty regular time so I can get out if needed. There was a lot of hand waving and verbal descriptions for what i wished done. Joel's written estimate was spot on. Better still, his crew did excellent work and we received every bit and more then expected. Absolutely no follow up when called. Called a couple of times to discuss their employees. No call back. I guess they don't care.

Maple Leaf did our rough grading, fine grading, seed, sod, mulch beds, and planted 2 trees at our new construction home in August of 2022. To say we are unhappy with our yard is an understatement. The rough and fine grading is horrendous. One of our trees is crooked. The mulch beds were not dug deep enough so mulch is spilling out into the lawn, and the dirt underneath is not even close to flat, so there are many areas where landscaping fabric is exposed, but valleys where there are inches of mulch. We contacted Maple Leaf on August 29th ask them to take a look at the grading because we had water pooling in our back yard and to take a look at the tree that appeared crooked. They never rang the doorbell or let us know that they were coming by, but I got an email on 10/21/22 (after following up via email twice, and several phone calls) that they had looked at it and everything was fine. In the spring of 2023, we had several inches of standing water in the middle of our yard - about 1/3 of our backyard. We asked them to come out again. Again, we had to follow up several times before someone came by to "measure." We had to follow up several more times before a crew showed up with no warning, didn't speak to us at all before beginning to bring dirt to the backyard, and advised it was fixed after we went out there to see what they were doing. Luckily we were working at home to be able to speak with them. It is better than it was originally graded, but it still holds water and is clearly not done correctly. Following that, we mowed for the first time in the spring, and there are holes and valleys in a 5 foot wide area along the entire length of our backyard. I called and had someone advise that the supervisor wasn't in the office but would leave an urgent message for him to call us back. We have never heard back from them and have given up at this point. We paid a lot of money and gave Maple Leaf a blank slate to grade and the work was completed so carelessly. We would expect at least some pride in work and follow up to fix what was done poorly, but they really just do not care. Based on the quality of work performed and the absolute lack of communication afterwards, I would not recommend this company to anyone. read more

Had a pretty miserable experience with Maple Leaf. Requested spring cleaning services, de-thatching, and new mulch for my beds. I received a confusing estimate form, which I did my best to fill out. To make sure I was understanding everything, I wrote the total on the bottom of the estimate and circled it before signing. They turned this into five individual services spread across different days of work and half a dozen invoices, which arrived both in the mail and in email, to be as confusing as possible. After the first day I emailed to request one invoice at the end of services, to keep my finances straight. I was told via email that was fine, but continued to receive all the paperwork anyway - including "late notices" when I hadn't immediately paid the invoices for the services done first. Meanwhile, when the day of laying mulch arrived, the workers used some of it to completely bury my kids' fairy garden (which had contained many living plants, a string of solar lights, and actual toys...?) After I contacted them three times they sent someone to remove that specific mulch, but the plants in the fairy garden are dead. When all the work was done, I called and asked to go through all the (many) invoices and to ask whether or not I'd been charged for the mulch and labor required to kill the fairy garden. I talked to someone who said he couldn't access the invoices on the office computer, but would have the right person call me back. This was on a Friday. On Tuesday, I received yet another invoice and this message to explain everything: "I know that you had asked if you could pay for everything when it was completed you now owe close to $2000.00 please get your payment sent right away." I asked again for a phone call to go over the invoices , and find out if I was charged for the extra mulch and labor for the fairy garden. When I finally got a hold of the right person, I was told no, they didn't charge me for the mulch...even though the invoice that was sent right after they covered the fairy garden (before they knew this was incorrect) didn't change once the error had been corrected. When I pointed this out on the phone, I was told that the mulch they used to cover the fairy garden was "extra" they'd brought along on the job. I asked how I can know I'm getting the amount I'm paying for, and they said the four yards of mulch on my estimate and invoices had been approximate, the number they try to get close to. They don't know exactly how much mulch they bring to a job. So, yeah, I'm pretty certain I paid for my fairy garden's murder weapon. Meanwhile, my final total was $400 higher than the number I'd circled on my estimate. The woman I spoke to did the math and first got my total. Then she did it again and got the $1946 number. It turned out the math I'd written on the bottom of the estimate had been incorrect. This really was my mistake, but I'd written and circled the number on the estimate. No one had bothered to correct me during any of the many invoices. The actual work done by Maple Leaf, when they did the areas they were supposed to, was fine. But they killed my fairy garden, overcharged me for mulch, were difficult to reach and made excuses when I had questions, and made the process of billing as confusing as possible at every step. My overall impression is that the people who do the actual yard work are good, and the people in the office have no idea what they're doing. Will never use again. read more

Joel Grant, President of Maple Leaf, provided the most detailed proposal, including drawings that perfectly matched the vision we had for our home. The crew who completed the work on the patio, led by Anthony, were prompt, courteous, and professional, and no detail was too small for them to consider. The concrete team was excellent and solved the challenges created by an aged and severely sloped crumbling driveway. It is rare to have such a large project completed and for the homeowner not to have a single complaint, but that is most definitely the case. I highly recommend Maple Leaf Landscaping! Just had Maple Leaf out to remove leaves and over 30 tree stumps. First off, they were prompt with an estimate, answered numerous questions, and their pricing was reasonable. Kristin was particularly helpful. They communicated well and arrived promptly. When their stump remover broke, they rented one to complete the work. Teams were also friendly. Did initial leaf removal and then back out for a quick final cleanup before the snow falls. Even added a project for some brush removal at a reasonable additional fee, which was completed very timely. I found them professional; great follow-up; excellent work; and very reasonable pricing. I will use them again in the Spring and in the coming years. read more

Do NOT hire this company! We used Maple Leaf to install a patio. We saw the negative reviews for Maple Leaf beforehand, but the vast majority of the reviews are for their lawn and snow services, not landscaping/hardscaping. Let me tell you, they are the worst company I have ever worked with. Maple Leaf came in substantially lower than other bids for our project and that turned out too good to be true. We signed the contract in late summer 2018 and specified we wanted our patio installed spring 2019 as it was a new house and the ground needed to settle for a winter. You would think a landscaping company would know that, but they went ahead and scheduled us for fall 2018. Didn't even tell us we were on the schedule, I hadn't heard anything back for a couple months after we signed the contract so wanted an update and that's when I found out their first mistake. Come Spring 2019, I still hadn't heard anything about when our patio will be installed. After a dozen phone calls/emails over several days I finally got a hold of someone (they are impossible to communicate with, as others have noted in their reviews) and was told the sales guy we worked with last year was fired for low bidding and that our price will need to go up! These companies book out way in advance so if we wanted a patio to enjoy in the summer, we were stuck with them, so we were forced to pay more than our original contract. When Maple Leaf finally did start the install, they did not tell us, we got home from work one day and our yard was torn up. Not a big deal, but just another example of their terrible communication. The install took quite a while, certainly longer than expected. In the lead up to the install our contact kept saying how backed up they were because of the rain, but when the install finally started, the workers would take almost 2 hour lunch breaks and didn't work on the weekends. If they are so backed up, you would think they would work at least on Saturdays. We are in a new construction neighborhood and there are always workers around on Saturdays and Sundays, but not this company. The patio ended up not being built to our design. This was because the sales guy did not measure one side of our house correctly. Which is funny because he came out to remeasure after our first sales guy (the one that was fired) measurements didn't seem correct. This resulted in our patio being 10 sqft less than it should have, not much but enough to notice. They ended up offering us a discount that amounted to less than what 10 sqft cost us for the patio on a sqft basis. They should have offered us substantially more considering we now have to live with a patio smaller than we wanted. When the patio install was done, they resodded, but very poorly. There are parts of our lawn that should have been resodded but were not. Additionally they did not clean up well. I have found 10+ cigarette butts in our lawn. They should not be smoking on their customer's property! The last thing to be aware of is they charge a fee to pay by credit card. If I can buy produce at the farmer's market without a fee, a business such as this certainly should. This is something they must offer their customers. Absolutely the worst landscape company I have hired in the 17 years of working with various landscapers in the Madison area. Worse than Bruce Co. Late with everything from snow removal, maintenance, and landscape projects. I do realize that this industry is subject to whether beyond their control, which can result in delays, but the delays we experienced, like other reviewers, had nothing to do with bad weather. They seem to be overextended and favor their larger corporate contracts over individual home owners. And rude customer service. The workers on site were perfectly nice, but the office staff are not. For a landscape project, based on experience, we knew to "get it in writing" in the contract. All we wanted was to have the contract say, "install black vinyl edging, weed barrier, brown mulch, and X number of plants". Staff refused to do so. We even talked to a VP at the company who told us we would have to pay for landscape designer to do a full plan with drawings if we wanted that. One year under contract and we are done with this company. If you do hire them (or any other landscape design or maintenance company), be sure to get your agreement in writing and be specific and clear. read more

Don't hire this company! I paid them a huge price to do fall cleanup for me and their inept crew left enormous piles of leaves all over the street. I had to spend hours cleaning it up so my neighbors didn't get upset. I called them the next year and they told me to wait for a quote via email, which never came. After calling back several times I was quoted a price that was 400% higher than the previous year, which was their passive aggressive way of telling me they didn't want me as a customer anymore. I hired this company to do the spring clean up for my daughters home in Madison. Scheduling was easy and that was it. I will not be using them again, they did a marginal job at best. Picked up sticks, leaf blew debris and cut the lawn. Pricing was high for the service performed and billing not timely. I did not receive a bill from them for 2 months at which time they had added an overdue payment fee. Lesson learned. Never go on word of mouth, check the reviews and learn from my mistake. We used these folks for two years.There were always issues with poor performance. They would show up on time but their performance tended to be poor or worse - especially with driveway and sidewalk snow removal. Huge fail. Also with yard service. Their employees seemed entirely clueless. They are told to mow grass and ignored the fact that the ground wad soggy leaving behind huge ruts and destroyed turf; every time. The last Fall Cleanup - I had to have them come back after their first attempt and only then did they kind of get it right. We will never let them near our property. Sorry Maple Leaf. We'd used Maple Leaf in the past (2013) for a largish front yard landscaping project. At that time, we were quite satisfied with their service. However, more recently, we asked them to do an additional smaller project -- they did the job incorrectly and incompletely, and failed to do all the work specified on the contract (it's pretty clear that 7x3 feet of pavement does not = 144 sq feet!). It has been one annoying issue after another. We've spent the last 3 months trying to resolve the issue, only to have them drop the ball multiple times. Two years in and my retaining wall is showing signs of failure. Emailed the owner and heard NOTHING back. Not an auspicious beginning. Called the office and the receptionist set up an appt. for Joel to come take a look. What a waste of time. I was informed that it was past the warranty and they would not repair the wall. They also did a crappy job re-seeding my lawn. I still have bare patches. $18,000 for a wall of dubious quality. Within a year settling had caused the extension to pull away from the downspout, no doubt contributing to the failure. With the original rock wall only lasting 10 years, I was assured that their wall building technique would make the new wall very solid. This company blows! They don't stand behind their work. I used this company to build my patio and they did a great job. I hired them this year to do snow plowing at my home, the driveway and the walkways. The first snow fall, several weeks, they never came back in the afternoon and I had to shovel it all on my own. Big snowfall yesterday, they came once yesterday and did the driveway, its now 3:30 pm on Tuesday and they have not shown up to do either the driveway or the walkway, I have called there multiple times and John just blames it on his driver, Richard. I paid the a ton of money, in advance for the entire season, what a mistake!! 02/02/16--Chapter 2: After receiving multiple apologies for their poor service, we had another snowfall today and as of 5pm, Maple Leaf is no where to be found. This company is great at making excuses, but that's where their excellence ends. Below is an email sent me earlier today; "This is to inform you that we are out right now removing snow from driveways, sidewalks and doing our best to get them cleaned up. As we aren't sure the real details of this storm as it has changed in range a few times. We will keep going until everything is cleared up. Please do not respond to this email as no one will reply. If you have concerns or questions please contact 608-845-2203." Agree with an earlier reviewer - do not hire this company for snow removal. Contracted with Maple Leaf for a winter of snow removal, and they no-showed after 5inches of snow. We called six times and only received voicemail and then excuses about how they are understaffed due to the limited snowfall this year...yet we already pre-paid a significant amount, so I'm not sure how this can be our problem!? This is the second year we've contracted with this company, and still need to explain multiple times each season where our lot ends. We'll definitely be looking to get out of our contract this year. read more

In the summer of 2012 I had a very large landscaping job completed by Maple Leaf Landscaping using Unilock products. The project included widening my driveway and creating a curved walkway, landscaping the front yard, landscaping both side yards including huge boulders on a curved portion that was too difficult to mow. The scope of the backyard include a large patio with seat walls and a fire pit, as well as a retaining wall on the other side yard along with landscaping. The entire backyard was also landscaped and new sod put in along with landscape lighting. The back patio and side walk leading to the front driveway was put in at ever so slight an angle so that when it rains the water just pools away and once the sun is back out things dry up very quickly. Finally, the project included burying all my downspouts as well as an extensive underground irrigation system so that I would never have to worry about water in my basement again! The project scope did change slightly in the midst of the project so we did exceed our original deadlines but other than that I have no complaints. The only disappointment I experienced related to a delay in the project due to a death in the family of the foreman (actually I was the one who opted to delay the project two weeks rather than use a different foreman to complete the job). I must say that the level of professionalism by the Maple Leaf workers was absolutely outstanding. With the exception of one especially friendly and somewhat gregarious individual, they kept their voices down which enabled me to continue to work from home. Despite the heatwave, I never heard them complaining. There were a couple of occasions where they were even sent home due to heat advisories. Neighbors reported to me that on several occasions they overheard the foreman telling the workers to completely redo something that wasn't up to his standards. Every stone that did not fit perfectly into the design as-is had to be individually cut by hand which literally took hundreds of hours. It was a very large, noisy, dusty job that drove my neighbors and me bananas (not to mention my dog who couldn't use the yard for months!) but the results were so amazing, it was well worth the inconvenience and disruption. Probably not the cheapest landscapers around but so good at what they do, I would never go anywhere else. In fact, I wholeheartedly recommend Maple Leaf for any job, large or small. read more
