Take the opportunity to grab 'em while you can. When Aspen gets busy, they get VERY busy, and Eric -- I conjecture -- don't quote me -- would need to turn away clients or ask them to go on a waiting list for the following year. Mr. Eric, Ms. Lindsey, and the rest of their brilliant crew have been working on a multi-year project for me putting in hardscape, including grading and, ultimately, changing (soft-scaping) our two acres from lawn to native plants+wildlife flower garden. Eric and crew are experts on native plants. The more I read about "lawns," the more I cringe every time I pass one on the road. Lawns, being non-native plants, they are animal-torturers -- ironically, lawns passively mow down animals. Think of lawns as efficient animal-disposal machines. Do the planet (and your neighborhood) a favor and make your land friendly to critters by insisting on native plants. Native plants and animals evolved together over millions of years, so when one's land doesn't have native plants, wildlife starves, all the way up and down the food-chain. Lawns are gasoline- and water-guzzlers. The lawn industry uses up a humongous amount of petroleum products merely in lawn-mowing. I am a "Gone the Lawn" person now. Lawns are appropriate ONLY under certain circumstances, like one is a croquet fanatic. I never knew that gardening was year-round. April is the month everyone waits for, but planning starts the previous autumn. Eric's physically-demanding season winds down in mid-November, so let him see your plot before the snows hide the land. We needed to have our yard regraded to keep our basement from flooding in heavy rain. Aspen did a perfect job for us. The grading is subtle - so it looks great - but it channels the rainwater perfectly. Most of the yard had to be graded, which meant that it also needed to be fertilized, reseeded, and watered. In addition, Aspen put in a bunch of very attractive boulders along the edge of the yard and installed sod in places that really needed it. We couldn't be happier with the result. Eric was an absolute pleasure to work with. He answered all of our questions and listened to all of our concerns, and he and his crew exceeded our expectations, coming back repeatedly to check on things and do additional reseeding that they threw in for free. Eric (the owner of Aspen Garden & Landscape) did an amazing job on our property. We moved into a 100 year old house a couple of years ago, and we would get water in the basement every time there was a significant rain. He helped us design and execute a cost effective plan to drain water away from the house while doing some beautification along the way. This included regrading the entire property, constructing a small retaining wall, installing some underground drainage tubes, planting an entire lawn, and creating some planting beds around the property. Having worked with a number of contractors in the past (see 100 year old house above), we especially appreciated several aspects of Eric's work. First, he was straightforward about pricing, and always kept us up to date on total project cost. When changes came up mid-project, he would clearly outline the options including pricing impacts. Second, he was willing to work his schedule around us while we built a deck. This meant that after grading and before finishing the planting beds, he had to take a two week break from our project. I was concerned that we would have some difficulty getting him back on site, but he was prompt and attentive as soon as we were ready to continue. Finally, he's just an absolutely great guy. He kept our neighbors happy despite the construction noise, even going so far as to help an elderly neighbor remove a problematic shrub free of charge. One weekend (yes, he worked some weekends to keep the schedule), he helped me carry and install the 20' main support beam for the deck when he saw my wife and I struggling with it. About one month ago, I was looking for some help with some patio work I was planning, as I wanted to get started right away this spring. I normally do this type of work myself, but have had some recent surgeries and reached out for help on Thumbtack. Within about 20 minutes, Eric from Aspen Garden & Landscape responded and we discussed some initial details. A few days later he showed up on time at my house and we looked at the job site. Eric was very professional, easy to talk with, and it was obvious he had a lot of experience. Later on, he provided details on what the work would cost and I was working with him on when to schedule the work. The first weekend in May was expected to be great weather that I wanted to take advantage of, so I got started with the work myself, and, unfortunately, timing just didn't work out between the two of us. I was, nonetheless, impressed with Eric and how he conducted his business. All too often it's difficult to get people to simply return a phone call, but Eric was very responsive.
