The Cannon Ball House is the home of the Springfield Historical Society. The home dates to circa…read more1741 and is listed on the National Historic Registry. The Cannon Ball House can be visited by appointment or on a few select dates. Typically those dates include: the Sunday of President's weekend, 2-4 pm, the Sunday closest to the anniversary date of the Battle of Springfield on June 23, 1780, 2-4 pm, the 3rd weekend in October, Sunday 12-4 pm and the first Sunday in December, 2-4 pm. The historical significance of the Cannon Ball House is that in June 1780 the British burned Springfield to the ground. The Cannon Ball House was just one of four homes that were not destroyed. During the course of the Battle of Springfield a Cannon hit the house and was lodged in the wall until it fell out in the 1920's. The home was originally an ochre color w/cream & dark green trim. There are no original pieces in the home but rooms have antiques and museum quality items that date to the Revolutionary War. Some Civil War items, early tools, battle dioramas, and a Colonial garden can be seen I would suggest this for those who have an interest in local history or the history of the American Revolution and/or the Civil War.

The events they are putting on are wonderful and geared to so many different people and groups within Maplewood and the event spaces are gorgeous. There truly is a space for everyone and an event for everyone. It is such a wonderful community space for the town and the way the redesign has incorporated the park next door is truly inspiring. Every time I have gone since the reopening I've found it bustling with energy while still having that library-escape feel. If you haven't visited it yet, do yourself a favor and go!

I started Zumba about a dozen years ago at the y and full circle still come one night a week to the Y for Zumba. All in all the Y is a great place

The Y is an incredibly warm place, with a staff that has come to feel like family. We are always greeted with big smiles, and even staff we don't interact with often remember me and my children and ask how we're doing. The swim instructor, Fern, has taught all my kids to swim during camp and in private lessons. She's great. I've also been to many of the Y's Zumba and yoga classes, which were free with our membership. Glad to be a part of the Union Y. :)

I really wanted to love this space and make it a regular stop for my kids and me, but our experience left me feeling unwelcome. When I arrived, I wasn't greeted at all. The staff at the front desk were engaged in a personal conversation and didn't acknowledge me for several minutes, even though I was standing in line clearly waiting for assistance... I had a few questions and just needed some direction, but felt overlooked and ignored from the moment I walked in. Later during our visit, we were in the soft foam children's reading area. I removed my Crocs so I could sit comfortably on the foam blocks and read with my toddlers, assuming that shoes weren't meant to be worn in that particular area on the mats to keep it clean and safe for kids. A staff member by the name of Emily Head of youth services) asked me quite abruptly to put my shoes back on. I politely explained that we were sitting in the foam block area and that's why my shoes were off, but she responded with , "Well, that's very unsavory," and laughed. (Not in a friendly way) in front of others. It was embarrassing and completely unnecessary, especially since we weren't causing any disruption and were quietly reading together. After that exchange, I no longer felt comfortable in the space and decided to leave. We had walked 30 minutes in the heat to get there, excited to enjoy the new facility, but instead left feeling disappointed and dismissed. I truly hope the library staff can work on being more welcoming, especially to families and caregivers who just want a safe and calm space for their children to enjoy books. First impressions matters and unfortunately, this one missed the mark.

In terms of the facility it was easily 4 star level. But you can't leave out Location, Location, Location. The Morris Plains Community Center is in the middle of the Morris Plains Community Park! That means it is next to 5 baseball fields, 2 batting cages, 2 basketball courts, 2 tennis courts, 1 playground, 1 gated sand box, a covered picnic area, a pond, and a community pool. This place gets the 5 star rating because it is surrounded by so many options to have a good time outside. No voters were harmed during the writing of this review. And if there were, FUGETABOUTIT!!!
