The Cannon Ball House can be visited by appointment or on a few select dates. Typically those dates include: the Sunday of President's weekend, 2-4 pm, the Sunday closest to the anniversary date of the Battle of Springfield on June 23, 1780, 2-4 pm, the 3rd weekend in October, Sunday 12-4 pm and the first Sunday in December, 2-4 pm. The historical significance of the Cannon Ball House is that in June 1780 the British burned Springfield to the ground. The Cannon Ball House was just one of four homes that were not destroyed. During the course of the Battle of Springfield a Cannon hit the house and was lodged in the wall until it fell out in the 1920's. The home was originally an ochre color w/cream & dark green trim. There are no original pieces in the home but rooms have antiques and museum quality items that date to the Revolutionary War. Some Civil War items, early tools, battle dioramas, and a Colonial garden can be seen I would suggest this for those who have an interest in local history or the history of the American Revolution and/or the Civil War.

When my kids were school aged, the y provided afterschool programs, vacation programs and summer camp, all of which are necessary for working parents. my kids always loved the y and the programs. I started Zumba about a dozen years ago at the y and full circle still come one night a week to the Y for Zumba. All in all the Y is a great place

I have had at least one child in the Y, in either daycare or summer camp or both, for the last…read moreeight years. My youngest will be starting at the daycare next year. The Y is an incredibly warm place, with a staff that has come to feel like family. We are always greeted with big smiles, and even staff we don't interact with often remember me and my children and ask how we're doing. The swim instructor, Fern, has taught all my kids to swim during camp and in private lessons. She's great. I've also been to many of the Y's Zumba and yoga classes, which were free with our membership. Glad to be a part of the Union Y. :)

This was a turning point in the American Revolution in the North before moving to the South ending at Yorktown. My partner and I came to this historic place on this summer-like Sunday located in Union. This was the home of the Rev. James Caldwell, a Presbyterian minister and active supporter of the Patriot cause during the Revolutionary War. The towns of Caldwell in Essex county is named after him. The original parsonage dating to 1730 was burned in 1780 by a Loyalist mob. Later that year Caldwell's wife Hannah was killed by British soldiers in the house. Her death was most likely due to a British soldier mistaking her to be a sniper at the window. In 1982, this rebuilt well preserved 18th century house was added to the National Register of Historic Places and operated by the Union Township Historical Society as a museum. It's interesting to note that the death of Hannah Caldwell at the Parsonage is depicted on the Seal of Union County. This may be the only town, county, or state seal in the United States that depicts a killing. For those history buffs, this would be a great visit.
