I have been a patient for over 15 years. He has replaced both my hips and did a total knee replacement of my right knee. How can anyone give him anything other than 5 stars. I am 85 and have over 20 doctors and none better than Dr Tim Mar. His surgerial skill are top notch and office visits are great. Great administrative staff that take care of you as soon as you arrive and make check out perfect. Appointments are always on time and you are in and out as quick as can be. Dr. Mar could not be better. Oh yea, great character that makes you feel right at home. read more

Based on my personal experience, he should get a negative rating. 8 years ago, at Sutter downtown Sac, I went in for a routine hip replacement. Good news, I survived the surgery. Bad news, the aftermath of surgery was a torn meniscus. I must have been dropped at some point. Post op Mar admitted I had a torn meniscus, but did not have an explanation. For hip replacement, Drs insert a rod into your femur bone then screw it in. When Mar did that, he measured incorrectly and made my leg 1 7/16 inches longer than the other. I had to buy corrective shoes w/a huge bottom soul for years. I could not wear sandals or walk on the beach again. Finally Dr Mehan from UCD replaced the other hip and God bless him, he added enough length so I was balanced again. So please beware of Mar and Sutter. First thing he said was as we get old, we break down(duh). He said he doesn't do surgery. Doesn't do a steroid shot, but does a gel shot(. that didn't work). He did not say one thing about what was going on with my knee. Just gave me the shot and said goodbye. I was in there all of 5 minutes!!! read more

Dr Mar has done two joint replacements,and 8 other orthopedic surgeries, all with amazing outcomes I can't say enough about Dr Mar and his professionalism!! This surgeon has been in my wheelhouse for well over a decade, with various joint replacements. Some surgeries were in a hospital, some were out-patient. I wouldn't trust these operations to any other surgeon. His office visits are often quick, as he has a steady flow of patients to see. He's one of the most efficient surgeons I know, and I've known and worked with a fair number over the years. I'll take efficient over touchy-feely any day. read more

Let me start by stating I owe Dr. Mar much and I will be forever grateful for his presence when he could have easily avoided me and went home on the fateful Friday night. I will cut to the chase and tell you a short story . I was working construction many years ago and managed to cut my thumb and index finger almost off just hanging on by a thread so to speak , As I entered the ER at Sutter General I received Xrays and two Doctors came out and said they would remove my fingers! I was alone and helpless at this point and waiting in some back room Dr. Mar all of a sudden popped in wearing his civilian attire and looked very young and never dawned on me that he was an accomplished surgeon who was on his way home when I had arrived . I said "I think you have the wrong room " and he replied " No I don't think so my name is Dr. Mar and I have come to look at your hand " Thank the good Lord for Dr. Mar because if he would have gone home which he could have easily done I would be a pathetic site today! Dr. Mar was the only person who could look at my wound without grimacing and making a crude remark . It was a devastating wound to say the least and Dr. Mar said to me "I can save your fingers " when no one else was going to even try because it truly looked totally hopeless even to me! Dr. Mar said " I was on my way home but it looks like I will be in surgery tonight . On a Friday night! What a guy! Even after he told me he could help I thought he was just giving me hope and felt sorry for me. Well of course I was out during the surgery but I am sure he worked well into the night repairing my hand when he could have easily gone home but he did not . To this day I have full use of my fingers and am very grateful for this amazing person who took the time to help a stranger he had never met before. There is not a day I don't think of Dr. Mar and what he did for me and I will always remember him for being there when I needed him the most , Thank you Dr. Mar for being class "A" Doctor and a caring human being at the same time! Dr. Mar is excellent! Last year he performed a total knee replacement on me using local Anesthesia at Alhambra Surgical Center. I was in and out of the OR in an hour. It was painful (of course, my knee had just been amputated), but the pain was managed very well. I've experienced no problems with my new knee. I can dance and ride a bike again. And my scar is barely visible. I had been under the care of another excellent orthopedic surgeon, but he wanted me to wait several years to replace my knee due to my age and all that, but it was interfering with my life and I was in a lot of pain and limited to my use of that knee (my femur had broken off due to a bike accident making my knee uneven and unstable). No offense to my other doctor at all, but I sought a second opinion from Dr. Mar. His team, as well as his staff, were a joy to work with. I recommend him highly. read more

Dr. MAR IS AN AMAZING SURGEON, but his staff support isn't so. I will always be grateful to him for his skillset and experience but Desire (receptionist?) should retire. She is of absolutely NO HELP with trying to locate the good doctor or, for that matter, even an on call doctor. I called every day between the 29th of Dec. And the 6th of January and all I got were lame excuses. I needed pain med for a total knee replacement and she offered NO ASSISTANCE. After the holiday passed, she told me there was no way to send an Rx to pharmacy because a tree took out their line. I said, can't it be called in? She said no, those must be sen9t electronically. So I had to minimize daily use of med and I still ran out before refill got submitted on Jan 5th. When you try to get anyone else by, extension you can hear a recorded office Mgr. tell you this is not a good number and redial their direct office number. I don't know what her duties are but seems all she wants to be responsible for is answering the phone and making appointments. However if the person answering the phone has no responsibility to take action with the message and wreaks of "that's not my job, I don't get paid enough to do that" then it's time to move on. Find other useful employment or get out of the way and retire. I'd give the doctor a full 5 if not for this most unpleasant woman. I have 4 other people express similar thoughts about her. read more

I started seeing Dr Mar for knee injury and after failed pain relief from orthoscopic repair, I thought I'd never get relief. I asked him not to give up on me and he said he wouldn't. We went back for a second surgery and had stem cells placed. After a few months, I again was discouraged and just didn't want to go back to see him. 1 year post op just like that, I was suddenly pain free. It's been 2 years now and I am still pain free. I work 12 hours a day as ER nurse and so far, so good He always been professional and personable. Thank you much. read more

No doubt this is the best Orthopedic surgeon in the greater Sacramento area. I wish I had known of Dr. Mar sooner. He has repaired both of my shoulders and I am now pain free. Post Script. He was great until he did a simple arothoscopic procedure on my left knee. It went all bad after that. Now he wants to do a total knee replacement. Highly invasive. DR. Mar is conventional old school and needs to come into the 21st century with the latest knee replacement advancements. He's lost me as a patient. read more

I went to Dr Mar because my shoulder kept sliding out of place after an accident. While he was always very close to on time for my appointments, he never spent more than 3 minutes with me per visit. Often I had to follow him out of the room still asking my questions. I had the surgery scheduled with him but ultimately I decided I couldn't let a doctor like that operate on me - if he couldn't pay attention to me while I was awake and talking, how did I know if he'd pay attention to the insides of my shoulder while I was under anesthesia? I found a different shoulder surgeon who was a much farther drive, and had longer waits, but he really spent time to really examine my shoulder and listen to what I had to say about it. I wouldn't go back to Dr Mar. read more

This doctor was highly recommended to me by another doctor as being the best around, and after receiving a total hip replacement, I agree completely. The surgery went very smoothly and I was standing and walking with very little trouble within days. the staff was very professional and efficient. Thank you for calling in the nausea medication that I was in great need of. It seemed for a moment I was wasting my time. I'm in a great deal of pain from the SLAP and rotator cuff repairs I had on Wednesday. The last thing I need while attempting to recover is extreme dizziness and nausea. I have been eating soup and drinking juice since Wednesday. I also have not taken any more medication than what was prescribed. It became very frustrating talking to you because it seemed like you weren't hearing me. It sounded like you were being condescending. I work in the health care industry and have for over 5 years. There is a right and wrong way to handle patients and our interaction was not good. Again thank you and I pray I never have to call there with another dire situation after hours. read more

(she said you really do see "the light") He gave her the wrong meds, twice, after her saying no I don't want that. He ignored the whole thing, like it never happened. Dr Mar replaced both my knees and pain is gone. However, he does not listen or communicate well. I did not confront him about that and we seemed to get along well. Later, he refused to see me for a second opinion related to an arm surgery, without explanation (visit was covered under my insurance). The woman who schedules his appointments is unkind and shows little regard for his patients. Will not go back to him or his affiliates for any reason. He's not the only good Ortho in town. read more
