They also have a selection of honey that looks and tastes wonderful, one local and one from Utah, honey is really expensive everywhere usually but the prices were incredibly low for the amount and quality of honey. Stopped in this treasure that's only open Friday/Saturday. They even do grape stopping in the barrels in August/September for the community to participate in. I am French, and wine is my culture. I always managed to find good wines at good prices when I was in France, but when I moved to the Bay area, 16 years ago, I failed and I gave up drinking wine. When I moved to San Pedro, I went into Marabella store and met Ramona. She was really kind, friendly, and knew a lot about wines, so I gave a try at the "2 bottles for $7" offer, and... WHAT WAS THAT? UNBELIEVABLE! In France you just don't find that quality of wine for that kind of money! I only took 120 bottles because my house is too small, but I will come back. I was directed to Marabella from my online cooking group looking for a good red wine vinegar. Lived in Pedro my whole life and this was the first time visiting the company. I found what I wanted and even got to taste it before I purchased a bottle. The flavor was perfect. The price was even better. I've paid 20.00 for a good bottle of vinegar online and this beauty was 6 bucks for 750 ml. A great bargain. I was there again today to resupply and got the larger bottle for 8 bucks. This place is THE REAL THING. They've been supplying wine-making advice, equipment and ingredients since 1932. ME: 1932. Hmmm. Wasn't that right around the time of the Volstead Act? THIRD-GENERATION PROPRIETOR: Uh, yeah. Lucky for the San Pedro folks, Marabella sold "grape juice" to the locals to ease the sting of Prohibition. They're still at it, in a tiny garage-size space next to an Italian grocer on 8th street. Grandpa runs the place, and two sons work it, with grandsons doing the work that teenagers do best: crushing the grapes, schlepping your purchase to your car, rinsing out the wine barrels. I grew up in a family of weldors, so a family of winemakers just seems dreamy. I kept asking questions about the business: Does it pay the bills? Who are your customers? Do you sell your wine to local businesses? Apparently, grandpa considers it a hobby and wants to keep it small, so, no, they don't sell wine to local restaurants. Instead, they supply those who want to make wine. Like me. Last weekend, syrah was available, so I purchased 75 lbs for my home wine-making pleasure. This weekend, I got grenache, and I brought my teenagers along to see the place, witness the process, and get the skinny on the Volstead Act. Then back at home, I let them stomp the life out of the grapes. Now we're good for the 2011 vintage. read more

I've lived in San Pedro all of my life and I just walked into Marabella for the first time today. I had a friend who needed to pick up some winemaking supplies, so I went in with her, and I'm glad I did. Tony has everything that you would ever need to make your own wine or beer even. You can even buy some 'mother' to make your own vinegar if you're into that sort of thing. They have been there for over eight decades (which mean they must have been going strong through prohibition), and they're still going strong. The warehouse section is very large and clean with tons of barrels and presses for making your own wine. I can't wait to try my friend's blackberry wine. I'll follow up with this review when I do.
