I did not stay in the mansion but took the time to stop and view these two amazing buildings that look a lot like a wedding cake. The residences were constructed in the 1860s by the nearby Whitehall, New York-based architect A.C. Hopson, and are examples of the highest Italianate style that was fashionable at the time. A creamy white marble with a slight hint of green, all from the quarries in Rutland, 15 miles to the east, is the source of their characteristic radiance. The Rutland and Whitehall Railroad was used to transport unfinished slabs to the city, where they were hewn into blocks, then shipped to market. But stone magnates Joseph Adams and Ira Allen made a point of selling most of it while also saving some to use in their own creations. To be able to stay in a mansion constructed of marble and built in 1867 was a real treat! The experience is like going back in time but with all of todays modern conveniences! Breakfast was a delightful bounty of homemade deliciousness. One morning we were served maple bacon (bacon brittle), company eggs and scones. Everything was perfect! This place is magical! From check in until check out, Marble Mansion Inn and the staff (and the cats!!!) there were just excellent. There is so much history in just the place itself, but my partner and I felt the genuine personal love and care that the current owners held for this lovely home. We spent lots of time with Greg Parke who owns and operates this lovely B&B with his family. What an amazing life he's had, and a great story teller too. We were so lucky to have stumbled upon this place by chance when we were late booking a place to stay near Killington for a packed Spartan weekend. We stayed in the smallest room (Ayn Rand) because it was the last one available, but it was still very comfortable and charming. The beds were super soft which may or may not suit everybody, but the pillows were perfectly dreamy and cushy. Mr. Parke settled us in after a nice long chat and gave us a perfect dinner recommendation. The rest of the night was so peaceful and quiet, a nice change coming from living in Boston day in and day out. We hung out with their cats on the porch, got to appreciate the amazing beauty of the property, and felt very much at home. We logged in our breakfast time and any dietary requests so that food would be fresh and ready for us at the requested time - we really appreciated that. The next morning we came down to find our breakfast hot and ready for us in the beautiful sunlit dining room. There were lots of beverage options (coffee, teas, different juices) and the hot, hearty breakfast was the best breakfast we had in a very long time. The egg and Guyere dish was cooked to perfection and so flavorful. And we were treated to turkey sausages due to a dietary request to replace the usual bacon - such a kind gesture to find a substitute :) The pastry was a fluffy "puffed French toast" which was so comforting. In addition there were yogurts, cereals, and some bagels and croissants. They aren't kidding when they say they have a hearty full breakfast waiting! It was amazing and so memorable. Guests there were very friendly as well. By the time we checked out we had another great conversation with the gracious owner who shared amazing stories about his career in aviation and all his world travels. We can't wait to be back again and hopefully next time for a longer stay. read more

Amazing first night at the Marble Mansion. I stayed in the Pearl S Buck room which was beautiful and comfortable. I need to ask where to buy those squishy pillows, they were just right and I live for a good pillow! Due to poor/last minute planning on my part I'll be staying in a different room tonight and I look forward to seeing it! Breakfast this morning was elegant and delicious. Bacon is one of my favorite food groups so that's all I really need, but the coffee was quality, & the eggs were fancy. My only regret is that I'm here for a wedding weekend and I don't get to spend much time at the inn or exploring the area (gentlemen get all of the leisure time but us ladies have to prep). I will have to book a room (just one this time) in the fall or winter so I can get one of those fireplaces going! read more

The pluses: their BACON! Don't miss it at breakfast, it's delish. The hosts and staff - everyone is welcoming and very hospitable. The Inn definitely has charm, which is nice. The pillows and bed that we slept in in the Hemingway Room were very comfortable. The bathroom was spacious, had hot water. The wifi and TV worked like a charm. There are a nice selection of books to choose from if you want to sit on the large porch and read. Pepper - cute and friendly gray tabby resident cat. The long haired black cat (I can't recall the name). Misty - the resident parakeet. Cute little bird :-). The Inn is pet friendly. The minuses: The Inn is pet friendly. I love pets; I have 2 dogs and 2 cats and while we don't travel with them, I respect people that do. BUT, the Inn smells like dog urine. It's unfortunate. I think a good rug and floor steam clean is in order. Because of this, we won't book here again. It was really pungent. We will miss the bacon :-( read more

This was a very comfortable refuge for me coming from California in the middle of winter and having never been to this region of Vermont. I attended a week of activities at nearby Green Mountain College, just a few miles down the highway while staying at the mansion. Sharon was very accommodating to ensure my personal comfort. Parking, privacy, internet and a great atmosphere were all plentiful. Additionally, the rates were fair and affordable when compared with other nearby B&B options. You cannot go wrong with this choice. Stay a few nights in Fair Haven. The mansion is right in town, yet surrounded by open space all at once. read more

I called to make a reservation in February as there is a family party in the area and this was the recommended place to get a room. I was told to call back in March. I called yesterday March 6th to make my reservation. I asked about the cancelation policy and was told 1 week. I asked if I could make my reservation now over the phone with my credit card. The reply "it's easier for me if you just do it on line" I again asked if she could take my info and again was told " its easier for me for you to do it online." I was not near my computer, and frankly it would have been easier for me, the customer, to do it then while I had my credit card out and it was on my mind. Maybe I do not using my credit card online - crazy response from a business that should make it easy for their customers. Marble Mansion Inn can keep their attitude and their room. A wonderful place to stay while in VT. Warm and inviting. Decorated in period style; you will feel transported to the early 20th century. Breakfast is a gourmet treat, and included. Even though we have family in Fair Haven, we opt to stay at the Marble Mansion while in town to feel like a true get away. read more

While not a B&B person my wife is. That said, I really loved our stay here so that speaks volumes for the quality of this place. Beautifully appointed room with private bath, nice and quiet , across from a town green surrounded by shopping, dining and in just a great location. The hosts were incredibly gracious and breakfast was tremendous. In all honesty I wanted to find fault with this place because I like the consistency of chain hotels but I was 1000% wrong and i am glad i was. Very reasonably priced and we look forward to returning. Close by if you are visiting the local colleges as well. We stayed in the summer and the rooms did have Air Conditioning units, WiFi and were immaculate. read more

I absolutely loved this venue. I was visiting from California, came up to see my daughter who is a student at University @ Buffalo. We took some time off to venture out this way and visit the William Miller Farm in Whitehall, NY. I happened to hear about this place through the William Miller Farm Hosts. I was able to reserve two nights. They were very flexible with me when I had to change dates. We were treated so kindly and courteously. We requested plant-based options and they were so accommodating. Our host was so friendly. We enjoyed his company and his taking care of us to the detail. My daughter was pleasantly surprised to walk into the suite that I had chosen -- Jane Austin -- her favorite author! She was able to get some homework done, and at the same time just absorb the peace and quiet and beautiful surrounds. I truly recommend this awesome, affordable place. It is nice to know that the new owners are really upgrading this place. I love the history behind it. I highly recommend this experience. read more

Affordable and incredible, luxurious breakfast. I would recommend staying in a room other than the Louis Carol room though. That room felt a little like the daughter's bedroom that had been converted into a guest room. Needs some updating and fixing, as the beautiful plaster moulding is leak damaged in some places, and it has an overall creaky feeling to it. If it was fixed up a bit, it would be stunning. The town is very quiet and not very picturesque. read more

This past Saturday- Tuesday my boyfriend surprises me with a Vermont getaway. We drive up the 3.30 hours from New York- a scenic autumn filled drive and arrive at the Marble Mansion Inn. Wow. It is a beautifully quaint Victorian mansion; all small-town charm, cute cats and glorious breakfast goodness. My gosh the breakfasts- I am gluten intolerant/allergic and they made me delicious unique gluten-free breakfasts everyday. Popovers and jam, Herbed Foccacia, Egg & Cheese Souffle, GF waffles and pancakes, maple syrup glazed bacon and sausage links. I ate like a queen! The room we stayed in was the JRR Tolkien room. It wasn't overly decorated but tastefully in keeping with the victorian wallpaper and theme. Loved the windows and fireplace! Slightly wish it was just a tad more Tolkien- but that is not a complaint though! The owners, Greg and Sharon are complete sweethearts! They both made it a point to interact with us about our stay, and they tell such fantastic life stories. Be on the lookout for Pepper, their large and adorable grey shorthair cat. He was so used to people that he would let me pet him. We also recommend checking out Skene Manor and Wilson's Castle for day trip visits.Then as if this getaway couldn't get any better, Donovan proposed to me in the Fair Haven town square gazebo after singing a song he wrote just for me. He even hired a talented local photographer Donna Wilkins to capture the moment. There are no words to describe my happiness, and I am blessed that Donovan chose such a gorgeous, lovely place for our engagement. B&Bs always seem like a good idea, but it's difficult to gauge the actual quality, so let me help. The owner/manager is not helpful or capable of providing good customer service. The bathroom was smaller and in poorer condition than my walk-up in NYC. The entry room/downstairs smells and there is nothing to do in the area. In general, the house looks nice from the outside, and on a nice summer night, I could imagine having a drink on the wrap around porch, but nothing like that is available. Can't recommend it. read more

I normally stay in Marriotts averaging 200 nights/yr in hotels around the world, but this time I was visiting family in the area and there were no "brand" hotels nearby. I also rarely stay in B&B's due to the erratic quality to be had. However, this place rivals some of the best 5-star hotels I have stayed in for the bed comfort and quality of food. The Shakespeare room's bed was like sleeping on a cloud and the real feather/down pillows gave me the best night's sleep I have had in ages. Then in the morning I was treated to what can best be described as the "Downton Abbey experience." With antique Havilland china, real sterling flatware and crystal, one feels like having stepped back in time to a more civilized age. And the food more than matched the presentation! My favorite was the fresh and light Belgian waffles an inch thick with fresh berries and "REAL" maple syrup! Not that lousy flavored corn syrup 99% of all other hotels use! I also have a weakness for old architecture and this places does not disappoint. While not a "castle" in the traditional sense, the mansion is an architectural gem in an unlikely rural setting. The interior is breathtaking with plaster crown molding almost half a meter in height rivaling that of the finest mansions in Europe. Lastly, Sharon and Theresa do a fabulous job making everyone feel as if they are family. Everything reeked of cat pee! The place is completely run down, not charming at all. The owner refused to believe anything was wrong with the place, and actually yelled at me for bringing it up. The walls are so thin so you can hear EVERYTHING (including the loud family reunion happening in the living room underneath our room). So sad to see a great piece of architecture be bastardized by this awful business. We spent 2 hours there before realizing it just wasn't worth it. read more

My wife and I recently stayed here and were quite pleased. It is a large and beautiful old home which the innkeepers have lovingly maintained. Sharon, Greg, and Theresa are welcoming, personable, and friendly. Sharon is a superb baker and the breakfasts were delicious, varied, and ample.
