The residences were constructed in the 1860s by the nearby Whitehall, New York-based architect A.C. Hopson, and are examples of the highest Italianate style that was fashionable at the time. A creamy white marble with a slight hint of green, all from the quarries in Rutland, 15 miles to the east, is the source of their characteristic radiance. The Rutland and Whitehall Railroad was used to transport unfinished slabs to the city, where they were hewn into blocks, then shipped to market. But stone magnates Joseph Adams and Ira Allen made a point of selling most of it while also saving some to use in their own creations. There is no cost to view the buildings, one of which is apartments and the other is this one, the Marble Mansion Inn. Just remember that it's private property and be respectful. Breakfast was a delightful bounty of homemade deliciousness. One morning we were served maple bacon (bacon brittle), company eggs and scones. Everything was perfect! Other breakfast offerings included; fruit, yogurt, bagels, fruit spreads, juice, coffee and a large assortment of teas. I'll let our photos tell the rest of the review.

The room has everything you'll need for your stay. Clean and charming. The mansion is full of history and beauty. And every mornings homemade breakfast made by Steve's wife was delicious! On the other hand the owner was completely overwhelming he would not stop talking to us during breakfast. My family and I wanted to talk about the wedding the night before and plan the day to do some sight seeing around the area, but we couldn't get a single word in with each other, because the owner so obnoxiously kept talking. He had to be the center of attention the whole time. Eventually some of us tried to have a side conversation but the owner kept talking to the others. We then had to talk louder to hear one another so the owner talked even louder. We all felt so overwhelmed after breakfast! In order to plan the day everyone had to congregate in my room with the door closed to get a talking moment away from him. We were so exasperated after that morning. I am so sorry to say this, but the owner has to be made aware of himself and future guests have to be made aware of this as well. About the food. We were served bacon and french toast. Although delicious one would think eggs and fruit would be at least be an option at a Bed and Breakfast.

First off let me set the record straight- I really don't like Bed and Breakfasts. I've stayed at…read moresome pretty ones- in Ashland Oregon, in Maine. I just don't like the lack of privacy or the set time to eat or the forced conversation. When I'm traveling I prefer to chill. But this B&B has several things that set is apart and make me like it- a very casual atmosphere- a pretty location- a wonderful proprietor and policies that are different than most B&Bs. First off- there is no set time for breakfast. You can wander down when you like. Second- the lady who runs the place has come up with a brilliant plan- she sets a steaming hot pot of coffee outside your door in the morning so that you can drink your coffee in peace (and privately) before venturing down to the main room. So simple but I've never seen another B&B do that. There really isn't much in Salem NY so you'll only stop here if you happen to be in the area. But if you do and you have B&B phobia as I do you can safely book here. I just remembered the name of the lady who runs it- Laura. She's really nice.

I would have been stranded otherwise, biking legs tired for the day. The inn is just what need and want, clean rooms and bathroom, friendly and helpful host (she told me where to bike the next day), beautiful grounds, friendly farm dogs and a tasty breakfast, coffee and tea the next morning at a time of your choosing. Thank you Laura for providing a wonderful retreat from a hard day's ride.

Stunning views of the beautiful trees that surround the property and those on the mountain across the way, with different shades and hues of greens. Some mornings not a cloud in the sky, while others have various sizes and shapes of puffy white clouds sailing by on the jet stream. Listening to many different types of birds chirping and to the woodpeckers pecking. Watching a hawk or two soaring on the winds and tiny hummingbirds feeding a mere 6' away. Hearing the gentle breezes rustling through the trees, watching the occasional deer wander down the gravel drive and then bound across the front lawn to the fields next door. Perhaps a red fox trotting across the lawn to drink at the pond down near The Cottage and then continuing his morning journey. The sun beginning to peak over the top of the mountain across the way and starting to warm the front porch. A perfect start to the morning, and all of this before one of Kay's magnificent breakfasts!
