Margarita Village LLC was totally not what I was expecting. I figured my boyfriend and I would walk in to a Jimmy Buffet feeling type bar, but were instead walked in to a dive bar! Granted, the outside looks a little rough. There's mostly neon signs looking out at you from the dark inside. When you walk in, you'll notice the floors are concrete and that there are pool tables. Walking in, it seemed like the place has seen better days. However, looking at everyone in the bar, they all seemed like someone you could easily strike up a conversation with. My boyfriend and I were mostly looking forward to trying a margarita. We both ended up with a POG margarita. If you're unfamiliar with what POG juice is, it is Pineapple, Orange, and Guava juices mixed together. While the margarita was very strong, overall it was a delicious drink! We even got to try Lihing mui powder. If you go, look it up and ask for a glass rimmed with it! There is no air conditioning within the bar but we'd been there after sunset and didn't really feel hot. The bartender Kya? Kia? was so wonderful! After checking out the reviews, I did see some negative Nancy's on the platform talking about how this felt like a 'locals only' place. When I walked in, I made sure to strike up conversation with Kya and asked how her day was. Everyone on the island realizes you are probably vacationing. I was treated so wonderfully and Kya even gave me a recommendation for a hike in the national park. Be so kind to people and you will always make a friend! If dive bars are your thing, definitely check out Margarita Village! The margs are plenty! read more

This is one of the best bars to go to on Hilo side. Kaie is one of the best bartenders I've ever had. She was so positive, nice and had great hospitality overall. If you ever come this side you have to go to this spot to have a good time and to meet nice people. They have lots of varieties of drinks and the appetizers are ono to go along with the alcohol. Perhaps my assesment of this place will be unfair as i have personal friends that work here and I perform music here on fridays with my rock band. I no longer see reviews up for this bar so Ill do my best to give it the fairest shake I can. The atmosphere. Eclectic. This bar is unquestionably dive. It also has the most diverse mix of patrons coexisting peacefully (for the most part) that i have ever seen. Ive seen calm locals, rowdy locals, tourists, punatics, college students and occasionally, hot babes all in the same bar at the same time. The crowd does tend to shift based on a day to day schedual. For example its a karaoke-ish bar on Mondays and Sundays. Its a freestyle rap club on Tuesdays and a Dubstep Dance Hall starting on Thursdays through the weekend. The Inside is classic dive. The furniture is a bit dated and shows its wear and tear. The place is cleaner than many other bars but i still would be hard pressed to want to take a shit in their bathroom. Its lighted and pleasant enough to relax and enjoy a beer or two despite it all. My usual complaint also applies here. They would definitely benefit from having more space. Parking is usually ok but if they are busy you may need to park on the roadway which may put you in risk of getting towed or ticketed depending on where you park. Just be mindful of parking off the road and not in front of gates. The prices. Pretty standard prices all around they dont skimp on mixed drinks and shots. The mixed drinks are normally very stiff and their shots are on the generous side. They do have drink specials from time to time and are worth it. Their drink selection is good enough having a variety of liquors and drink types. Ive never had a margarita there for some reason but I understand they are pretty good. The downfall is the lack of beer on tap. They have taps but it has been out for a long time due to needing repair. The service is good but like everywhere it will be slow when the bar fills up. They do not have waitresses circulating consistently but the owner and bartenders will float around if they know people will be ordering. For the most part if you want a drink you must go to the bar and wait. A side note. The bartender Abe makes the most creative drinks i have seen in town. His creations are totally worth checking out. Ask him for a "root beer" and tell him I sent you. read more

First time going was on a Payday Friday Night, no cover charge which was cool (being that most bars in Hilo charge) but it wasn't busy at all. 2 way older gentlemen playing pool, another one at the bar, myself and 3 friends. A radio was playing the WAVE FM and us talking alone were louder than the music. They need to seriously overhaul the entire place and bring in some serious interior designers to get it at least up to date, things just look messy and old, sorta like those run down biker bars off of some deserted highway you would see in movies. Parking is shared with a small mom and pop convenient store, I could see problems with that if it was a full house, the whole place could probably hold about 8 cars maybe 9 in the parking lot before people would have to find other means of parking and about 25-30 people max. Bartender wasn't friendly either, younger guy around our age maybe a few years older, didn't really joke around, super serious and not so welcoming.
