I got the bleu cheese burger medium rare, a solid choice that I was satisfied with and the crispy fries and sweet potato fries were yummy too! They offered a free birthday burger so that was such a lovely addition to my night, and the selection of beer was solid as well. Shout out to the bartender working on 6/18 when a drunken patron bothered our group. We were close to leaving anyways and I made sure to speak my mind to him, but the situation was handled well by the bartender and the staff was apologetic despite it not being their fault so hopefully the rest of their night went well! The pesto burger was soo good. The pesto itself had a great flavor without being overbearing or oily. I loved the slice of fresh mozzarella. The burger itself was cooked perfectly, and the bread was nice and toasty without being hard. The mozzarella sticks were fantastic, not greasy at all, and were decently sized. I really liked the marinara it came with, which it was flavorful without being overbearing and the only thing we could taste. Wow, yet again another surprise! We were just hunting for someplace to eat, and found this on yelp. It's just a little bit on the divey side, but not bad! We were very comfortable here! Great service! You'd think $27 for a hamburger is a bit high, except when It comes with two 6 ounce patties of hamburger, bacon, fried onions as well as peppers and mushrooms. If it wasn't for that, I'm not sure where you park to eat here. The inside has an old-fashioned pub feel, and there's additional outdoor seating available. We chose to sit inside since Hilo's weather is hit or miss with rain. One minor issue: the tables are a bit narrow for the booths, so we had to lean in a bit to comfortably use the table. I ordered the turkey burger, which came with fries. The turkey patty was grilled and hit a nice middle ground - not too dry, though not particularly moist either. What really stood out were the fries: extra crispy and not soggy at all, exactly how I love them. Service was fairly quick, but it might be since we had a really late lunch, and the staff was friendly throughout our visit. A good spot for a casual burger lunch when you're in the area. This was our burger fix after hikin' Volcanoes National Park. Small tight parking lot in back, but noticed an outdoor patio area and large indoor eating area with bar. Think super casual. We had a nice table near the front window facing the Main Street. Ordered some drinks Chee Hoo (coconut rum, lychee, lilikoi, and lemonade) sounded sooo yummy and it was pretty, but was kinda underwhelming. The tropical flavors didn't quite shine like I thought it would. Beer was ok California burger- excellent! Burger was juicy, produce was fresh, bacon and avocado were on point, and appreciated the tomato aioli. I opted for the salad instead of fries and their house made lilikoi vinaigrette was quite nice. I had asked our server for more dressing, but somehow it had got forgotten and she apologized. Southern BBQ burger- good. The only thing not quite right was onion ring. Came here with my family of 5 after my dad specifically called ahead asking about parking and wait times. We were told seating was "first come, first serve," but instead it seemed like they were picking and choosing The second we walked in, the vibe was awful. The restaurant was loud until everyone suddenly stared at us and got quiet when we entered. It immediately felt uncomfortable and unwelcoming. There were two open tables: one larger table in the main area near the live music that could easily fit us, and another tiny round table shoved into a weird secluded corner surrounded by walls and blasted by a bright light while the rest of the restaurant was dark. Guess which one they squeezed our family of 5 into? The tiny one. There weren't even enough chairs, so they handed me a dirty folding chair and crammed it between everyone else. Meanwhile, a group of 4 that came in after us was seated at the larger table in the middle of the restaurant and got water and service almost immediately while we were still sitting there waiting. The whole experience honestly felt disrespectful and uncomfortable. Whether intentional or not, we definitely felt singled out. The restaurant also wasn't clean at all -- there were dead bugs sitting on the windowsill next to our table. The only reason this isn't a 1-star review is because the food was actually good. Everything else was terrible. The servers barely checked on us, and after we finished eating we spent OVER 30 minutes trying to get someone to bring the check. Very slow to take our order, 4 employees on the floor and waited over ten minutes to place an order and place isn't busy. Hopefully the food is good. Out of the 10 burgers 3 were missing bacon, 1 was missing cheese, and there was no Au Jus for the Au Jus burger (not sure how you screw that up), we were also missing an order of tots. To say that we were completely dissatisfied is an understatement. Those burgers were the driest burgers we have ever had. You do know that it is okay to leave a little pink, or maybe try a different meat blend. I DO NOT RECOMMEND this place. Stay far away, it's not worth the money. This is the worst establishment ever. We had a service animal and apparently, the owner Rhonda Nicols, asked us the two questions. Once she did, she said do you want to sit inside or outside. We said inside and she was hesitant and started yelling at us in front of other customers. She might have been on some medication that made twitch. Over the years we've been to Hilo Burger Joint many times. We really enjoy the fun and creative burgers they offer. I do wish they offered burger sliders like the pork sliders. On our recent visits we have found the burgers to be cooked at very inconsistent temperatures though. When you're a burger joint, your burgers should be cooked correctly EVERY time. The garlic soy beans have been lacking in flavor and are wither greasy or watery. Burgers could use a little more seasoning and not just rely on toppings. The wait staff is always super friendly and we will ho back but I hope they can get back to thwir original standards. read more

Walking into HBJ you can almost instantly tell this is a cool Irish Bar/Burger Joint. They have a Full Bar and lots of seating inside and outside. My cousin brought us here as she loves the Gravy Fries. The menu is large and I really had a hard time choosing, but decided on the Green Chile Burger and a draft beer. The Gravy Fries came out first and I could easily see why she loved this, the gravy was on point, delicious. The wait for the food was just enough for us to inhale most of the fries. I ordered my burger with coleslaw, but you can get fries, salad or soybeans as you side also. The burger was juicy and cooked perfectly. It did lack a little salt, but everyone has different taste so a little shake of salt wasn't a biggy for me. The coleslaw could have used a little more vinegar in my opinion, but was decent enough.
