I'm a sucker for used book stores, although a lot of my current reading is digital. I stopped in yesterday after Lunch next door (Side Iron BBQ) to take a look around before we headed on towards our home in Genoa. Observations: 1. Large room full of reasonably organized books. And it could easily hold a lot more. 2. I found the book I've been seeking (without the help of Amazon) - The Source by James A. Michener, and in decent shape. 3. My bonus book purchase was The Milepost (Alaska Travel Planner 2024) at a nice discount. This scope of this book extends into the Alaska Highway and beyond and serves as one of my "some day" books. 4. Nice and helpful store staff. 5. A slightly leaky air conditioner gave me a little refreshment coming in. :) 6. Credit cards accepted and via dial up! read more

This is an adorable little new & used bookstore! We were camping in the area and I finished the book I brought along. My husband and I visited Margie's Book Nook to get another book to read. The owner, (original owner's granddaughter) was helpful and welcoming. She gave us a tour. The selection is HUGE! We had a lovely time finding gems to read. All the used books were one price at the time of our visit (September 2024). You could honestly spend days in there perusing books. This small business has been in Susanville for over forty years. If you live there, lucky you! If you are passing through, drop in! I promise it is worth it. read more

I remember coming to this place as a kid and it hasn't changed one bit. You walk in and you are completely surrounded by books. Then you go in the back and want to run out screaming. But have no fear. They may have a crap-ton of books, but they know what they have and they aren't afraid to find it or order it for you. This is the way book stores need to be. Comfy, cozy, the name on the building is the name of the lady standing behind the counter. Family run, local business. What could be better? I love you guys!!! read more

Margie's is great! I was preparing for a 6-hour drive with my little kids (ages 3 and 4) and needed some entertainment for the trip. Margie's has a great selection of Melissa & Doug items, so we were able to score some coloring books, color-by-numbers, crayons, and (my 4yo's favorite), dot-to-dots! Margie's prices are the same or lower than some of the big-name retailers. I'd rather support a local business anyway, but the reasonable prices make it a win-win!! Extra bonus - they take AmEx. This is an okay used bookstore, but not great. The selection was relatively broad, but included nothing very unusual or interesting. However, it's probably hard get good stock in an out of the way location like this. The books in the supposed collectible/old/unusual section are mostly overpriced (and pretty common, too). Regular book prices are reasonable enough, but I am mystified about why half the books are lying in heaps (barely neat enough to qualify as stacks) on the floor when many of the shelves have empty space. Not only does this make it difficult to browse but to me it sends a message that they consider their books to be essentially junk. That is, just something to toss on the floor, not worthy of the time it would take to shelve them or at least stack them so it's possible to see what's there without digging. If you want used books to maintain their value (both monetarily and culturally)--and I assume if you are running a used bookstore that you do--then maybe you should present your books in a way that conveys their worth. read more
