Maria's is our favorite Mexican restaurant in S.C. After moving her from California where we enjoying the best Mexican food possible, it was difficult adjusting to the typical Mexican food offerings in the Aiken area. We've tried all of them and Maria's is the best around. -- IMHO Teresa's terrible so it was no surprise that it closed; Mi Ranchos is overrated and over-priced and the food isn't better than Maria's. We continually return to Maria's and know that the food will always be good. The family owned establishment is always busy and friendly--all good signs. The staff does their best and goes out of their way to be nice to kids, which isn't always the case with other restaurants. Also, good lunch menu with reasonable prices too. We tried Maria's while in Aiken hanging out with friends at their recommendations. I got the fajita nachos, my boyfriend got the chimichangas, and we got a large cheese dip as well. The nachos were bland, and the steak had no flavor, and was really chewy and not cut up well for nachos. (Pull up a chip, 1/3 of the meat pulled up with it.) The chimichangas my boyfriend got had hardly any filling and like the steak on my nachos, had 0 flavor. The cheese dip was average, tasted like your standard white queso made with Velveeta with no spice at all. The beans served with the chimichangas were bland canned beans and were cold. The main issue is that the chips served with the cheese, in my nachos, as well as the chimichangas all tasted like old gross grease. Definitely not going to go back after tasting the food! read more

We came into this place with kind of low expectations because some other reviews. We were very pleasantly surprised. The place was clean, service was so fast, and the margaritas were really really good. If they aren't made with real fruit then they could fool me. Also the cheese dip was fantastic. The food was decent. But our server was terrible! She brought out cheese dip and then chips about 10 minutes later. 2 of the 4 drinks were wrong. We had to get her attention to take our order, had to ask a different server for chip refill and yet another server for silverware. All the other servers seemed to be great but ours sucked! No tip! If I could give 3.5 stars I would. The food is actually pretty good. Not fancy (it's Mexican food) but it tastes good. Love their salsa, cheese dip, hot sauce, most of their chicken dishes. What you have to steal yourself up for is the service. Be prepared to have to advocate for yourself the entire time. Want more salsa? Be prepared to have to ask for it several times and for your request to be met with an eye roll. Also know that any special order will cost you a ridiculous price. A soft shredded chicken taco is a $2 and comes with cheese and lettuce OR onions and cilantro. If you want all four toppings they charge you $4 a taco! Lol. It's not unusual to wait awhile to order and to have to flag your waiter down for a refill or any other need. If you can lower your standards for service, the food is yummy. read more

Typically when we visit here it's great food and the women servers are friendly! Tonight was such a disappointment! The food was cold, he forgot our kids rice and still charged us for it. We had to ask for refills, we had to get up to get salt and silverware. There was no prebussing done, the waiter didn't reply manners when we used ours, he was rude. We asked a female server to see a manager TWICE and never got the chance to speak with one. The phone rang constantly and no one took the time to answer it which was an unpleasant noise during our meal. I work in customer service and we ALWAYS tip 15-40% of the bill. Tonight was so disappointing that we did not leave a tip at all. Luckily my husband is passive and excellent company or I would have definitely made sure to have spoken with a manager even if I had to go into the kitchen to find one! When a family CHOOSES to spend their time anddddd money to dine at a restaurant it is the job of the ENTIRE staff to ensure the best service possible! I gave it 1 star ONLY because there was no rating lower! Everything about this visit was wrong. Waited forever to be recognized. Beer was served in a Hot mug, a HOT MUG! Margurita was also warm and very blah. Food smelled like ammonia! Started out good, the Guacamole was fantastic, as was the salsa and bean dip placed on the table when things went south quickly. Nobody ever came back to take our order!! We sat and sat for more than 15 minutes when we decided to leave. No one stopped us, no one even knew. Who allows a restaurant be run like this? If I was the owner, I would fire the waitstaff fast and get someone in there who actually cares about serving the public! Just got back from dinner at Maria's - what a horrible experience! Our waiter was rude and unfriendly and couldn't understand half of what we said, service was ridiculously slow, food quality was poor, and horribly overpriced (I was charged $1 extra for a teaspoon of guacamole that was added to my taco salad, to go along with the teaspoon of sour cream and cheese already on it), and one of the bus boys spent most of the time openly drinking a beer outside of the kitchen. We had to frantically flag down the waiter when we completely ran out of drinks, chips and salsa, and not ONCE did he ever come to check on us without us begging for attention. The only time he was attentive was when the check came, and he stood right next to the table and waited for us to pay after bringing the check. My husband and I have lived in Aiken for over two years. We had always considered Maria's our favorite place to eat. It felt like home away from home. The food was good, and the service was prompt and friendly. We brought our son from Florida for lunch yesterday because we wanted to share our experience. We were so disappointed. When we walked through the door, there was no wait staff in the area. Soon someone directed us to a booth. On my son's side, there was salsa on the seat. He asked a waitress for napkins to clean it. Now I would have expected for any employee of a restaurant to apologize and rush to clean it. Instead, she pointed to the napkins on the table and abruptly left. There is one gentleman who works there that is excellent. He always greets us with a smile. And when he saw we had not been taken care of, took our drink order, left our salsa and chips and menus. We waited an inordinate amount of time when the waitress finally came to our table. No smile, obviously not happy to be bothered. We were trying to be fair in our thinking because it was lunch time. After quite awhile, we got our food. When it came time for us to leave, again no one around. My son finally got up and motioned to a group of employees gathered at the bar talking among themselves. We just wanted our check to leave. We were there longer than we ever had been before--most of it waiting for the grumpy waitress. We are on a fixed income. When we go out to eat, it is a treat. Yesterday was not! We were treated rudely, and we will not be back!!! read more

We had a bad experience with service a while back and food was cold.. but we figured after a year of not going, maybe it would improve so we tried it again.. We walked in at around 3:15pm, not friendly at all.. took forever to get our drinks and then even longer to take out order.. at this point i was ready to pay for the drinks and leave, but they took our order.. ordered Marias steak the rib eye.. (2 of us ordered this) Now mind you the staff was sitting at the end both (including our waitress) totally ignoring us and not being attentive. then i hear her finally yelling to the kitchen yeah medium rare and rare ( just how we ordered our steak) this is about 15 min after we put our order in.. not a happy camper at this point but ok we waited.. my mom ordered a simple dish and after they FINALLY brought it out they did not being hers and had to wait about 5-7 min after.. I tried my steak and it was soo chewy.. i kept chewing and chewing and finally i just swallowed it.. that was NOT a good idea.. it got stuck in my throat.. I have never been so scared in my entire life.. I couldn't breathe.. i ended up being able to pull some of it out with my fingers and half swallow the rest.. ended up having to run to the bathroom to throw up to get it out.. I honestly was so scared.. while that was happening my dad had trouble with his and ended up sending it back.. as all this is going on as i came out of the bathroom my mom finally got her dish.. they took or meals back and off the bill ( the 2 steaks) not even sorry or concerned about what just happened to me after telling her.. made up pay for the drinks and the one meal.. honestly i felt like they should have comped it.. so then i point out the meals were late, they ignored us by sitting in the booth all together chatting.. she was blaming it on the kitchen.. I feel like they have no management there to keep track of the employees.. or maybe there is and they just don't care.. who knows.. All i know is that we are NEVER going back there again.. EVER! the worst customer service I have ever encountered.. If i want to choke i can do it at my house with well-seasoned food and for cheaper! we didn't get out of there until after 4:30 and left a couple of min after the food came.
