****IF YOU ARE A BRIDE, DO NOT TAKE YOUR WEDDING DRESS HERE!!!!**** I am new to the area and took my wedding dress to Maria's Tailor shop in July of 2024 for alterations. Nothing extreme, I needed it taken in at the waist, breast cups and the train taken in. I had a bad feeling right off the bat, as the shop is extremely dirty/unkempt and there is no alteration fitting stand. I try on my dress and explain what I would like to have done. Maria assured me that I DONT want her to do what I was asking (shortening the train of the dress) because it's too pretty. I explained SEVERAL times that we changed our venue to a yacht, so I do not want a long train otherwise people will be tripping over it in an already very tight space. She agreed and then told me I should add straps (it's a strapless gown). I said no thank you on the straps. She was EXTREMELY adamant that she add straps to my dress. I explicitly told her NO straps and to just do the 3 alterations that I had requested. I was told that the dress would be ready on Wednesday 8/21. I arrive at Maria's on 8/21 to pick up my dress. Not only had the train not been touched, it had not taken it in at the waist, either. She sewed in breast cups in the wrong spot and after I very adamantly told her NO straps, she proceeded to add cheap looking straps on my dress. We discussed once again what was needed, she re-pinned me, I spoke to her daughter who works the front of the shop and her daughter promised me that I was in good hands and that this would be done in time. I was told to come back 9/18. I come back 9/18 all excited to try on my dress. As soon as I opened up the garment bag I knew my dress was messed up again. The straps were STILL on the dress, even though at this point I must have said it 25 times that I don't want the straps on my dress. She never took it in at the waist and she hacked off the train of my dress, taking out the horsehair trim around the bottom of the dress. She didn't line the inside lining up with the fabric of the dress, so the lining was curling up on the bottom of the hem. It was a total hack job. I asked why she didn't take it in at the waist and Maria screamed "I TOOK IT IN! YOU LOST WEIGHT!" When I was grabbing an entire handful of my dress at the waist. It clearly had not been done. It occurred to me that she didn't take it in at the waist, so I would have been forced to leave the straps on my dress, because otherwise it would not have stayed up on its own. At this point my wedding was 17 days away and I was hysterical. Mad at myself for leaving it there in the first place, but also furious that at this point in time, my dress has been held hostage for 2.5 months and Maria managed to A) add something that I DID NOT want to my dress because that is how SHE preferred it, B) Ignore my request to take it in at the waist and C) completely ruin the hemming of my gown. I took the dress with me that day because I knew that it was not in good hands. Luckily, they did not charge me for the work that had already been done to it. As I said, I am new to the area and I unfortunately did not have anyone there with me to attend these appointments with and I have a hard time advocating for myself when I am in these types of situations alone. Especially when it comes to this, as I am a first time bride. I called ALL around town and finally found an experienced seamstress with 60+ years of experience with wedding gowns. She met with me the same day and looked at Maria's work. She confirmed that Maria did NOT take it in at the waist (even though she yelled at me and told me I was the crazy one for thinking that she didn't). And she let me know that there is irreversible damage done to my gown. Maria, if you read this, please stop taking wedding gowns. Women spend so much time in their lives DREAMING about their wedding day and the wedding dress that they will wear. You assuring your customers that you have the ability to take on work that you clearly CANNOT, will ruin someone's day. Now I was lucky and found someone to do 3 months worth of work in 2 weeks, but the next person may not be so lucky. This is every bride's absolute NIGHTMARE and it could have easily ruined my wedding day. I have made sure to call around to bridal boutiques in Kalamazoo and the surrounding areas to ensure they know that happened here and begged them to not refer this woman to a bride, as the only guarantee is that she WILL ruin your dress, gaslight you, force her opinion on you and be extremely rude. I've had dresses shortened by Maria and had no problem, as well as recommended her to many others with no issues. I took my wedding dress to her, I had the straps shortened, and the dress shortened by at least 3 inches. I also asked for some of the ribbing to be covered and the material she cut off to be saved. I went to get my dress, the straps were good and the dress was the correct length. The ribbing was not covered, which I pointed out but was told it'll be fine and none of the material cut off was saved. In reality it's a first world problem about the fabric but I had plans to use it and was very upset it wasn't saved after specifically asking it to be saved. I have gotten my wedding pictures back and you can see the ribbing I asked to be covered in the pictures and it doesn't look right. The bottom lace that was taken off to shortened the dress and put back on started to flop around half way through my reception. Overall, for everyday things I would recommend but for special event dresses I would look elsewhere as I felt my requests were not met. read more

Ms. Maria and daughter, Dora, have been mending and altering my family's clothes and household fabric items (couch cushion puppy chewed and replaced elastic in fitted sheet) for over 15 years. Very reliable and very reasonable. She even re-hand beaded my wedding dress in a few spots so I could wear it on my anniversary. I asked for the beading repair but they also ironed all the fabric between each bead grouping to make it look fresh. What a pain that must have been but shows how thoughtful! Came to Maria's by recommendation of a friend when I needed a long formal dress shortened. Maria was so nice, enthusiastic, friendly. She told me she's been doing this for over 30 years. She recommended I get cups added to the chest, which helped accentuate the bust. Total for the job was $60 which I think is fair considering the work that was needed on shortening the dress, I would probably bet that it was $50 for the dress and $10 for the cups. My dress came out perfect and it fit great. My only complaint is that I arrived to pick up the dress on the date she wrote on my order ticket, and it wasn't ready. She actually hadn't started it yet. Maria is indeed charming and can handle simple alterations, but she is more of a seamstress than a tailor, she doesn't handle complex fitting and will blame the material (in a a few different things I have her) rather than blaming her tailoring -- of which she sincerely want to do a good job doesn't have the ability, nor carefulness. She can be temperamental if the job does becomes too difficult. However, she apparently does very well with costumes and prom dresses and alterations. read more

Summary: Maria has a great eye for tailoring Highly recommended I've been going to her for over a year, and she has altered about two dozen garments for me. Tailoring is so incredibly important if you want to look polished--especially for someone like me who never, ever fits clothes right off the rack. I feel like Maria's my secret weapon when it comes to looking put together for the office and special events. I don't buy very expensive clothes, but they look like they're worth a lot more than they really are when they fit. The first time I walked in, I was greeted with "Hi, honey!" (even though she didn't know me) and ushered into a small room in the back. The great thing about Maria is that I can tell her that I don't like the way it fits but am unable to say exactly why and she'll do a quick tuck here and there and...voila. Perfection. She's very honest. "Oh no, I don't like that," she'll tell you if she doesn't think what you've asked her to do will look good, and then she'll make a better suggestion. I always trust her (it was hard for me the first time because I can be particular), and I've never been let down. I've had pieces I've owned for years but have never fit quite right, taken them to Maria, and been asked if they were new because friends didn't think they'd seen them before. The one thing I will say is that I'm always more satisfied with basic alterations than with really big changes. Maria is simply phenomenal with getting clothes to fit exactly how they're meant to, but she's not _quite_ as phenomenal at deviating from the clothing's original intention (if clothing can have intentions). Don't get me wrong--she's still good at it. She's just better at regular tailoring. Pick up is usually about a week from drop off, and her prices are fair (albeit kind of random and difficult to predict). Maria has a way about her that puts people at ease. I have used Maria's services for years and NEVER had poor personal customer service from her. She has gone above and beyond to alter clothing for me at an extremely reasonable rate and has even done quick fixes for my teenage son when he brought things in to her and she refused his money. I can't understand anyone having a poor experience with her as she is very kind and accommodating, however she speaks with an accent and at times it can be difficult but l always make sure she understands exactly what l want before I leave her shop so there aren't any misunderstandings. I say this because in any successful business transaction there must be concise understanding what is expected. Another poster on the shop's Facebook page said his wife had a bad experience and l want to tell potential customers that l have used her services several times in the last 10 years and have never had a problem with the quality of her work, her attitude or customer service. She has always had my work done on time and usually will call before the promised date to tell me it's ready. I won't go anywhere else and I'd hate to have a poor review cost her any business. Her skills are amazing and I've seen some of the dresses she's made. Her work is excellent quality.
