It's been probably 10 years since I last visited this store until a few days ago - talk about…read morenostalgia. This review is for how impressed I was with the customer service. There was only one girl working, and as soon as my mom and I walked in, she greeted us warmly. She let us know about everything happening in the store, including a BOGO sale. My mom was interested in a skirt, and the clerk explained how she would style it (which my mom loved), even coming out from behind the counter to demonstrate. The level of hospitality she showed us was amazing - something that's hard to find these days, and we really appreciated it.

I am not female. I am most certainly not slim. Sexy is not a word I would ever use to describe me. In other words, I'm not your typical Pitaya customer. I've always been curious about PItaya in Broad Ripple, one of 15 Pitaya locations nationwide with an emphasis on the Midwest with a handful of spots as outliers in Georgia, Texas, and Arizona. Pitaya started in 1990 in Bloomington, Indiana. The Broad Ripple spot now serves as their corporate address. It's a shop for young women's fashion, though certainly all ages can wear their fashions. Pitaya-labeled clothes are sewn here in the US. I had a cousin who, for many years, swore by Pitaya. While I've always been curious, that curiosity never led me to enter the place until recently when a friend asked me to pick something up. So, off I went. The good news, of course, is that Pitaya is one of the businesses in this building that is accessible. Several stores in this strip have a step to get in (Metamorphosis, the bagel shop, etc.). Pitaya's pretty easy to get into, and the accessible parking is about a block away. I actually found what I was looking for, picked it up, and was treated surprisingly well considering it was painfully obvious it wasn't for me. The store was well organized, the employee I met was friendly and helpful, and it had a good energy. I've also always associated Pitaya with super thin, however, I did see some variation in sizing. I mean, not quite to my size but definitely some variation. Will I go back? If my friend asks, sure. To be honest, I felt way more awkward at Thieves than I did here. If you can make an older, unfashionable guy like me feel comfortable then you've kind of won me over.

It was completely inappropriate, micro-aggressive, and made me wonder if she subjects all people of color to this kind of treatment. To make matters worse, I had to return to the store because I was shorted an item due to a system error. The store was nearly empty, but I could immediately tell she was heated and just wanted me gone. I brought an item to exchange and asked about stock for a few others, which is a standard request for a store employee. Instead of helping, her tone got meaner and her voice grew so loud that it felt like I was being reprimanded just for asking questions. She literally started yelling at me. I could see the hate in her eyes, and it took everything in me not to react disrespectfully back to her. Out of pure exhaustion, I gave up and only exchanged half the value of my item. This was hands-down the worst shopping experience I've ever had. If you're looking for similar items but prefer a classy environment where the staff actually welcomes you, I highly recommend going to Charles Mayer & Company instead.

The Wild Goose Exchange is a cool vintage store / thrift store that started in Wisconsin, but they branched out and now there is also a store in Indy. I can't be arsed right now to find out why it's called The Wild Goose Exchange, but there are cement geese in the store -- you know, the kind that your grandmother has that she decorates for each holiday -- which is a cute and whimsical touch. This store has everything: women's clothing, men's clothing, accessories, shoes, jewelry and lots of hats. No kids' clothing, though. I saw a couple of graphic tees that I wanted, but I ended up purchasing an electric blue corduroy jacket, which will be perfect for the fall weather coming up. They have so many jackets here. This is the place to find something old and used to cover you up. The prices are great, considering. Sometimes, vintage clothing can be marked way the heck up. But the prices at The Wild Goose Exchange are fair. They also curate their stock really well! As I was scanning the racks and pawing through the clothing, I could tell that the items in the store were intentionally chosen. All of the items here are straight-up hits. Because The Wild Goose Exchange is located on Broad Ripple Avenue and there is no street parking, your best bet for parking is in back of the store, near the Vogue Theatre. Yeah, I probably am. Anyway, that fun little bit aside that review made me want to make a stop to visit this new joint that I'd noticed but no really paid attention to. I'm not exactly the vintage shop targeting audience. After all, I AM vintage. Sigh. The Wild Goose Exchange started with spots in Appleton and Kenosha, Wisconsin and is now recently opened inside this Broad Ripple avenue storefront that is a little tricky to find and park for but definitely worth the effort. Vintage shops are a little weird for me. I like bargains, but I also feel like if it's too much of a bargain I start thinking it's just plain cheap. It's a fine balance. The Wild Goose Exchange really seems to find that balance quite well. They carry men's clothing, women's clothing, accessories, hats, watches, jackets, and a little bit more. As Nicole S. points out, this seems remarkably well curated. Don't be thinking this is your average thrift shop. It's not. It's also not really a pretentious vintage shop either. It feels communal with a strong emphasis on collaboration and giving back. The entrance is a little tricky in terms of accessibility, though it is what I'd consider accessible. The interior is definitely much better. I've always liked this spot and they use it well. As should be obvious, "wild goose" is a theme here. Hear me out. If you visit their website, there's a lot of "Where's the wild goose?" While I have zero clue why they went with this theme, I kept thinking to myself "wild goose chase" - which is, in fact, a fairly vintage saying. While I don't have a fashionable bone in my body (c'mon, you know it's true if you've met me), I really dug quite a few things here and items were in good condition and fairly priced. Parking is always a little tricky in Broad Ripple, but I find once I do it it's much easier than I expected. The Wild Goose Exchange feels like it belongs in Broad Ripple and I'd love to see its arrival trigger other arrivals around this area. For those who remember how Broad Ripple used to be, The Wild Goose Exchange brings that memory to life in its atmosphere and unique, inspired selections. I enjoyed this visit and will definitely return.
