Timing is the key to being able to do whatever exercise you need when you come up here. If you come here around 4 or 5 when everyone from coop gets off work and when classes generally wrap up, you are gonna have a bad time. Water fountains here are not that great so bring your own before you actually come. I can't really complain too much since I usually come around 10:30 - 1 so it's not as crowded. 1st floor is ok for doing work but like everywhere else on campus, the school hasn't adequately addressed the influx of students with relations to spacing. Like every other building on Northeastern's campus, Marino Center is too small for the student body at this school. Lately, we've been accepting too many, or too many people have been accepting us, and the facilities can't keep up. I've seen this happen with the library and the student centers too. Aside from that, Marino is a really great college facility. It's one of the newer buildings on our campus. The bottom floor has a large space with many tables to study and/or eat, and is connected to an Au Bon Pain, a Boloco, and a Wollaston's (Northeastern's "grocery store"). There's also a spin studio, but you have to be signed up for a class in order to use it. You need your student ID to swipe into the gym. No other ID will do. Once you get in, you exchange your ID for a lock in order to put your stuff in the locker room. If you try to go up to the gym with a bag of any sort, the staff will stop you and make you lock it up. I've always wondered why there isn't an in and out door for each locker room. There's only one door to enter and exit, which makes it difficult in the busy times of day. I'm constantly waiting for people to come out and holding the door, or hitting people who are coming in while I'm trying to get out. If they ever remodel, this would be the first thing I'd suggest. The actual locker rooms aren't bad. Lots of space, a sauna, showers, and a scale. Nothing too fancy. The second floor is home to cardio equipment, free weights, two classrooms for group fitness, and a large gym that is usually split into three sections for basketball, field hockey, and a free space. The third floor has a bit more cardio equipment, but it's mostly machines. There's a separate room for big buff people to use. There's also an elevated track for running, walking, or whatever you'd like. Each semester, I sign up for group fitness. It's $50 for the entire semester, and you can take up to one class a day, every single day. It's a really great deal. Recently, my roommate has become an instructor here, so I'm even more motivated to take classes. They offer a range, from beginner cardio and abs, to a more advanced HEAT (high energy athletic training). If you're a student at Northeastern, I suggest you check it out. The facility is nice, always clean, and staffed well. There are always clean, warm towels to grab on your way up and down, which is a nice touch. They have a nice array of machines, and the group fitness option is great. I just wish they would expand a bit, because finding a treadmill at 5:00pm on a weeknight is almost impossible. read more

I never appreciated the Marino Center (Northeastern University's main gym facility) until I had to buy a membership at another sports club. Not only does Marino have almost every machine you could imagine- they have an indoor track, basketball courts, aerobic rooms, complimentary sweat towels (which is imperative to my workouts) and locks to use in the locker room. Who would have thought being provided a lock was such a luxury? Although it seems as Northeastern continues to grow its student body, the gym becomes more and more crowded- but as long as you avoid the 5 o'clock rush- you are more than likely going to have no problem doing whatever workout you want to do. As for the aerobic classes (which cost money per semester), they have plenty of options, online sign-up and usually pretty great instructors. Although I am no longer an aerobic class junkie, I have plenty of friends who still swear by it. All in all- appreciate this gym! Besides being surrounded by either 20 somethings or 60 somethings (usually no in between)- it's a great atmosphere with great equipment. I'm a fan. read more

Oh Marino. You have been referred to by some as my girlfriend. And o, how much I love thee. From the moment my card gets swiped and thrown in the little drawer to be swapped for a key and lock I am in heaven and do not want to leave you. You are the apple of my eye, my beloved, my dearest. The marino center has been rated as one of the best fitness facilities in New England and if you have been here you would understand why. With plenty of staff there for assistance, up to date machines and equipment, organized weights, plenty of cardio, indoor basketball and hockey courts, a multitude of fitness classes, and an indoor track it is hard to compete with this wonderful establishment. I recently graduated NU and it will be one of the things I miss most about the school. Hours are 5AM-1AM on most days. Way less crowded at 5AM then 5PM by the way. It can get crowded after working hours so come at odd hours if you are able to. However, they do offer free admission to the first 50 members of the Boston community showing up after 6AM (best bet is to call and get the details on this). The lockers can get tight and when I used to come here before work I would jam up every inch of these things. One last thing I enjoy is that fact that Wallaston is right there if you forget something. Marino also sells things like socks, t-shirts, and wrist wraps if you forget those things. I seriously don't know how I'm going to return to the world of mediocre gyms when I graduate from Northeastern in May. Life is rough. I've been an avid Marino-goer for the past 5 years and can honestly say that I've made every penny of my student activity fee worth it. The gym is open from 5 AM - 1 AM, 3 floors, and filled with TONS of diverse equipment and machines. You get free towels, locks, and equipment (like heart monitors and foam rollers) with just the swipe of your Husky card. The locker rooms are huge, clean, have lots of showers and AMAZING saunas. Many of the cardio machines overlook Huntington Avenue and the others are great for people watching. Definitely makes a workout go by fast. There is a small set of free weights on the second floor and a larger weight room on the third floor. The second floor also has two studios for group fitness classes or whatever else, a rock climbing wall, 2 basketball courts and a hockey ring. One of my absolute favorite parts of this gym is the track upstairs. Although much smaller than a full-size track, as a runner it's nice to have another option besides a treadmill when Boston's winter becomes completely unbearable -- which it usually is. The group fitness classes are diverse and offered just about every hour of every day. Personal training is definitely the cheapest you can find in the area. I've done both and have always had great experiences. Also, a tip for anyone with a Boston-area license, the Marino Center allows 50 community members in for free each day, but you have to get there early! I'm not sure of the exact details but head on in and find out -- it's worth it!! read more

This place is actually making me enjoy being at the gym and working out, which is awesome. The Marino Center is huge, modern and just a really really nice place. They've got so many different machines (I only do biking there but I think they have like, 3 or 4 different types of biking machines? It's crazy!) for your work-out and the staff (all Northeastern students) is super nice and helpful. The locker room is clean, you get free towels (small and big ones) and the opening hours are great: 5am to 1am, come on! I'm really not a sports person but this is kind of turning me into one? Biking with a view on Huntington Avenue has become something I look forward to every week. Well done, Northeastern. (I also love this place simply because it's /free/ for Northeastern students and you would never ever get that in France universities. We don't even have a gym at my home school!) read more

I came here to write what Rani wrote pretty much. I belonged to one gym previous to me going to Northeastern, but only went for less than a year so I didn't really have adequate expectations on what a gym should be like. First, I've always enjoyed Marino Center mostly because of it's convenience (and because it was free). I never fully appreciated the place until after I graduated and joined another gym. When I went to a "regular" gym that was supposedly had a lot of machines and was a "great gym" it didn't even remotely compare to Marino Center. Marino Center has 3 floors (including the first which is where you check in and where they have the locker rooms). They have an ENORMOUS amount of machines. The only time I ever have to wait is if I use the arm curl / tricep machines which there are only really one of, but other than that you'll rarely have any trouble finding a machine (especially if you're doing cardio). They also have a full track which I prefer to use instead of a treadmill. If you're a Northeastern student and the Marino Center is your first gym, enjoy it / appreciate it. You will likely never be part of a gym like it ever again. read more

YES: Great hours (5 a.m. to 1 a.m. daily), INDOOR TRACK, moderately-sized weight room with a substantial amount of equipment and racks, clean locker facilities, locks to check out, and nice blue towels for all. NO: You need to go downstairs to check out a foam roller; not a big space/room for stretching, you'll have to walk around and scrounge for a spot; no TRX set-up (even the YMCA has this!); not a kettlebell in sight (unless you want to sign up for their kettlebell class), and no fixed-weight EZ bars! *cries* All in all, I like the Marino Center, but surprisingly, I find myself frequenting the YMCA because of the TRX setup, mat space, EZ bars, and foam rollers that I don't have to check out. EDIT: discovery of a sauna bumps this up to 3.5 stars. read more

Couldn't rave more about Northeastern's Marino Center. I could not ask for more in a college gym. Unbelievable hours of operation (open 5AM to 1AM) and there is not one piece of equipment they are missing. Minor Grievances - The lockers in the locker rooms get a little tight when you're trying to fit a suit in to change into before you go to work. I wish it was open to students only, as it can be awkward to see your professor and other faculty walking around the locker room indecently... Avoid the rush hours (5PM) and you should be fine. read more

The main gym of Northeastern, means it's always kinda busy. You should be able to get the machine you want though, so long as it's for cardio because they have at least 5 of everything. They have classes, which I've heard good things about, but haven't been yet. The track is great, and theres a lot of room for people to go at different paces. Great view of Huntington, which is great for people watching if you're bored on your treadmill/bike/elliptical. read more

Love Marino Center. There is so much to do here. Even a rock climbing wall. The free towels and locker use is a huge bonus. I know of many gyms that you have to pay so much extra for those. If you like to use free weights there are many to choose from. I also like the fact that there are disinfecting wipes at your disposal near all the machines and benches. Coming from an undergrad campus that has an amazing recreational facility, my standards were set pretty high. Fortunately, I was not disappointed by the Marino Center. The staff can use some training on interpersonal skills or perhaps pretend to like their job. I always try to smile, and sometimes that doesn't even seem to work. I have not had any issues with having to wait for equipment. The second floor is probably the busiest. The only suggestion or complaint I would give is the odor going from the first to second floor...not sure how that can be addressed. I love that they are open daily from 5am-1am! I like that they have a lounge area in the entrance for students to hangout or study before and after workouts. They also have Au Bon Pain and a burrito place, which I found a a little to have a food establishments inside a fitness center... read more

The Marino Center Staff, specifically the supervisor who works at the night shift is rude, arrogant. He likes to abuse his power, showing he is the boss. He is unpleasant to have around. NOT WELCOMING AT ALL! I feel sorry for those who have to work with him. He likes to single out guests to the Marino guests who may not know all the rules. He has no manners at all. He person Keith is not courteous to guests. That said, other staff are generally friendly. After all, most of them are students and trying to make ends meet. read more

Until now, I have never gone out of my way to post a bad Yelp review. I called to make an appointment in September, the appointment was cancelled in August, then cancelled again in September, then cancelled a THIRD time in October. The policy for the group fit classes is absolutely ludicrous, rigid and has zero rhyme or reason. The sad part is that all of the instructors are awesome - it's too bad the policies are a deterrent towards exercise and the administration seems to have a careless and lackadaisical attitude towards promoting fitness. If you're going as a guest the system is a little more complicated to get in then it really is but remember to bring exact change. The entire gym is BEAUTIFUL. Best college gym out there! Marino is clean, organized, and humongous. It has a ton if different machines- definitely the biggest variety I have seen at any gym. There is a weight room, basketball courts, a track, and a bunch of rooms where they hold classes. Group fitness is awesome! The gym is connected to a grocery store and a few restaurants as well. Huge gym and very well kept. i only like going here early in the mornings though, because it obviously gets swamped with college kids from 10 AM on. They have a decent track that overlooks bball courts along with a weight room, instructional workout rooms, and a lot of cardio machines. The classes are pretty good- I recommend cardio box. read more
