My husband and I travel a lot and we spend much time and Boston. I must agree that the monthly membership even with their annual fee of $39 is a great deal if you are looking for a place to exercise. The perks of having the black card are super. I usually go in with my daughter as a guest and my husband takes his friend as his guest. This is not the type of gym that will provide towels or have a steam room slash/sauna nor will they provide zumba, yoga or any other group classes. No they don't have a pool. Their monthly fee would be much much higher if they would. You would expect that for $10 or 19. 99 a month the place would be filthy but we always comment on it being the cleanest PF we've visited. My only critique would it be how in many occasions you come in and the crew behind the front desk do not even look at you to the face and acknowledge you're signing in. they are usually on their phones watching something or texting, if not they are hiving conversations amongst themselves. it's sad because sometimes when can have a question or concern and they might not seem approachable. I had a very bad experience with one of the employees just by the way he answered to my question. he and some of them seem to have a rough attitude. In the same way, I give props to a staff who mentioned he only works on weekends. He was extra nice to me and my husband with our concerns, very professional and welcoming. We mentioned how we appreciated him welcoming us by our names as we signed in, so much so that we went back to him and we're able to clarify our doubts on memberships and using the "relaxation zone". We mentioned our experience with other employees and he appologized for the experience and told us how management is working on making the customer service experience much better there. He was very polite and ethic about his fellow co-workers praising them for being hard workers and making us see (without underlining it) that them not acknowledging us or being on their phones constantly is really a minor thing compared to how they are good workers at keeping the gym in tip top shape . I don't want to be wrong but both me and my husband think his name was George or Gregory. We will certainly look for him when we come back in town and hopefully see him or people like him during weekdays. Our experience that weekend was excellent specially when, on Sunday, we found him early morning (7am) with the same high spirit. Used this gym for over a year. The best I can say is I've been to worse gyms. It's adequately clean and there's a lot of machines. There's some negatives about this gym, which I'll talk about from least important to most important. The air circulation is poor. The strength training floor is 2 levels underground, and stale air seems to sink and stay there. There's just something indescribably unpleasant about the air in there even when it doesn't smell like the inside of a sock. I really don't like the machines that Planet Fitness uses. They are certainly usable, but there's just something about the way they are built which makes them uncomfortable to use. A lot of these machines have a jiggly feel when you use them. I don't know if it has to do with the type of cable they use or what. They're just not great. I've been to smaller gyms in the past with better quality equipment. The one shoulder press machine they have is strange and seemingly less effective than other ones I've used in the past. Why so many leg and chest press machines but a lack of machines for shoulder and back training? By far the worst aspect of this gym is the culture. There's always jerks with poor etiquette at any gym you go to. It's closer to being the norm at this place than the exception. Lots of guys show up and hog machines, sometimes spending over 20 consecutive minutes. I'm sorry if your routine involves thrusting low amounts of weight ad infinitum, but the law of diminishing returns applies to building muscle, and you're using SHARED equipment. Then they chat on their phone or scroll TikTok! Sometimes people leave their water bottle at a machine to mark it their territory and then walk away for several minutes; ok, now nobody is using the machine in any capacity. Granted, most people will yield if you ask when they'll be done, but there's some particularly aggressive characters here as well. There's one man who hogs two of the cable machines at once, using one at a time, and barked at me when I wanted to use the machine across from him. The absolute worst are these guys who hog the shoulder/chest fly machines! In fairness, there's only two of them at this gym (why they don't buy more to meet the demand, I don't know), but so many people hog them and then sit there scrolling on their phones for 5 minutes. One time I asked a guy if he'd be done soon and he told me "just use the rowing machine." Uh, bro, how about YOU use the f&(*ing rowing machine? Glad to be leaving this place. Some of you people SUCK. Small family owned gyms are better. I'm moving so I can't suggest a better option in the downtown area of Boston, but there's got to be one. read more

The staff is friendly and you can tell they work hard to keep the space clean. I didn't see any inop machines during my workout here either. For being in a downtown setting, they have all the usual equipment you would find in any PF gym. This is an oasis on Winter street. It can be pretty rough on that street at night, but PF is a safe haven. I have been coming here since 2015 and have always been happy. The staff is extra friendly. I have gotten into some involved discussions with them, and they respond. You have a great mix of people from all walks of life for staff and customers. In the past one staff member was not responsive, but what can you do? The equipment is serviced. The sanitizing spray is stocked, and towels too. I think the place is really clean, and you can tell just from the fact that there is no dust on the baseboards. There are no troublemakers here, and courtesy is upheld. The music is a mix for everybody's taste. The staff are responsive to lost items (and if you found one too.) I wish they went back to 24/7 instead of 24/4 with Fridays until 10 and weekends until 7. My weekends are full, and that cuts into my plans. This is a place to socialize if you want to or else just seriously work out. This is an anchor in my life. read more

Before I started working out here, I had stopped lifting for 7 years. I signed up with PF two weeks after my father died to work off the stress and try to get back in shape as much as possible in a couple months when I turn 52. So as a new resident of Boston, I decided to give this gym a go. On the positive, they had a way to test the gym to see if you like it. Oh wait. Nope, not that either. Gym is terrible. Three stories down, bottom floor has almost no air circulation, and yea, that's where all the free weights are. Now when I say all, I mean one set of bumbles that go from 10lb - 100lb that all share. Few standing rope machines, 4 machines with benches for bench press, which everyone shares - lines are fun! I was assured the gym is getting cleaned daily for few hours to prevent COVID. Not true. You get what you pay for, and with this cheap price it's not a lot. I got the black card exactly a year ago, because I was splitting my time between Rhode Island and Boston. The Rhode Island gym was great - clean, equipment was rarely broken, staff was great. This location, not so much. First of all, Winter Street is one of the worst areas in the downtown area. As a female, I did not feel safe on weekends or nights in that area. There are many homeless people, men being inappropriate, and overall it's just not a very nice area. I would have been willing to look past that if the gym had been better. Unfortunately that's not the case. Machines are consistently broken, and don't get fixed for long periods of time. The gym is so busy at peak hours that there's 2-3 people waiting in line for equipment. People misuse the 30 minute workout area and it's not enforced. The biggest reason I finally made the decision to leave was how filthy it is. Consistently there are used feminine products on the ground in the bathroom. The toilets and showers are filthy. The locker room is also not kept clean, and the machines are rarely wiped down by gym goers. After splitting my time between a studio gym and here, I grimaced every time I had to go into this location. Would have been 3 stars, because I know you get what you pay for, but when I was canceling the woman at the desk was downright rude and initially would not help me. I had to ask for a manager (who's great), who was able to help me cancel. Overall, if you're looking for a cheap gym and can look past the uncleanliness this is an okay location. read more

There was a $10/month deal, but for that extra $10, she gets free haircuts, unlimited use of the hydromassage, access to every PF, and a lot more. I went along with her earlier this month and was pleasantly surprised. PF Downtown has a fair amount of well-maintained machinery and a friendly staff. There's a cardio room, a weight room, and a stretching room. They don't have classes, but they're good enough for a basic gym and they're located in a convenient location. They also have tons of locker space and showers available for use (just bring your own lock). Pro-Tip: They have free pizza and bagels once a month, which seem like funny perks. read more

Get what you pay for. I got the $10/month deal, which is so cheap I assumed the gym would just be a pile of plastic free weights and pool noodles. But there's no scam here, they just make up for the low price with high volume. Meaning the gym is obscenely packed at exactly the times you'd expect. You can't even really feel gypped for $10 a month. That said, they have a bizarre collection of machines. There is one, count it, one bicep machine, even as the 15 upright press machines sit there gathering dust. Similarly, only one of those chest+back machines, which is nearly always occupied. There's also a strict adherence to the "clean after use" practice, which translates to other gym members bathing the equipment in cleaning fluid whose smell makes you wish they just left their sweat on it. This location just recently opened nearby where I work. Being a new location and everything, it still has that 'new' smell. Everything is clean and shiny still. Hopefully it stays like that. Staff seemed friendly. I was given a tour when I stopped by on their 'Grand Opening,' and the manager who gave me the tour, forget his name, but he has a beard, was super friendly. I like the fact that this location has free wifi. The top floor when you first walk in is where you check in and what looked like to be the tanning area. You go down one floor which has the locker rooms and cardio equipment. All the machines have a separate tv attached to them, so you are able to go to any machine and watch whatever your heart desires. You go down another floor and that is where the weights and machine area is at, which their separate stretch area, 30 minute workout area, and their 12 minute abs area. Having the free wifi makes it so much better to get reception or to listen to Pandora on your phone. My boyfriend has a membership at Golds Gym in Somerville, and I can't really listen to Pandora there because of the lack of reception and no wifi. The machines look more updated than the ones at the Chelsea location. I also like how this location has the infinite-stair machine. Hopefully this location will stay nice and clean looking. Now I don't know if it's because it's a new location or what, but it seemed as if the employees actually keep an eye out and make sure people are using their machines correctly. I wouldn't mind this being the case. I know the one in Chelsea, the employees don't really care and let the customers do whatever they want. There are signs that say no jeans and every time I went to the one in Chelsea, at least one person was working out in jeans and no one would say a thing. It's easily accessible and they're open to 11:30ish at night. I know the manager I spoke with said they were shooting for 24/7 but due to city restrictions and licenses and what not, it may be difficult to do so. Overall, this location is definitely better than the one in Chelsea and East Boston. The one in Revere is nice, but if I had to choose, I would come here. read more

The people don't understand we are in a pandemic, mask down while working out and crowds of people working out together next other people. However, the young man who works at night does try to break up the crowds and asks people to put their masks on properly. My other Main concern is the handicap parking. The members constantly take the spots designated for people with disabilities like myself and nothing is being done. The cops who are right down the street do not do anything as well, as they claim it's private property. I was told by the Sargent that Planet Fitness needs to place signs both indoor and outdoor clearly visible and large enough stating people will be fined and towed; yet, three weeks have passed and nothing. A week ago, while there was ice on the ground myself and another handicapped person had to walk downhill and slipped on the ice because the same three cars taking up the handicapped spots refused to move. After asking two of these men to move, Respectfully, mind you, they have been trying to intimidate me and even have resorted to calling me names, obviously they are immature. There are only two workers that have constantly tried to help at night but have no support from management. It's a total shame and disheartening to see that the gym is not inclusive to It's disabled members. After almost 6 years with the company I believe myself and other handicapped members should look elsewhere where our money and disabilities are taken into consideration. read more

I actually like a Planet Fitness as a whole, most of their locations are great for the price. This location in downtown crossing however, is horrific. They leave machines broken for months at a time. They are too lazy to even change out the grips on pullout bars (which to date have been missing for about 9 months now...). There is only one water fountain that is constantly either filtering dirty water or just doesn't work at all. When I go to the desk to ask about water, they still make you PURCHASE the water bottles when their one water fountain is broken. Spray bottles are always empty too - I usually have to walk around the entire gym before I can clean a machine. I don't think it's fair to judge the gym itself based on the surrounding area, as it's exactly what you'd expect in downtown crossing. Animals everywhere you look. Also, yes it's busy but I am way more worried about the upkeep and actually giving a damn about the people that go to the gym. You know what you're getting yourself into a a basic gym membership, just a no frills experience , machines and weights. Then there is this place. What out for it! I tried to take a shower here and I almost caught hyperthermia, they don't turn on the hot water. The people at the desk don't greet you. I witnessed a group of hyena bros just stalk a young girl as she was trying to use the stair master. This place is seedy, be careful using it at night if you're a woman. I cannot believe that a gym can operate without a properly working water fountain. The fountain has been broken since Saturday (4 days). There is just no excuse for this. Water has also been leaking from the ceiling in the men's locker room. Some equipment is in a pretty poor condition: e.g. rubber sleeves are missing from pull-up equipment, exercise equipment not being lubricated properly. One of the showers in the men's locker room is not working (the one reserved for people with disabilities), another one has the hot/cold settings swapped. Seriously, management should take better care of this place. read more

Planet Fitness in general is a great deal. For those of us who don't care about fitness classes or fancy luxuries, PF is the place for you. The DTX location is great. Open 24/7, helpful staff, and the workout equipment/area is generally pretty clean. The women's locker room needs some attention - MAN, girls are gross. The showers and changing areas are generally littered with hair and trash, and you can count on standing in water while you wait that is a little higher than the bottom of your flip flop. This is my experience at a lot of gyms, but would love to see and effort both by the patrons and PF to improve the hygiene in here. Hydromassage and tanning beds near reception on the 1st floor, cardio machines on B1 and weight room on B2. I have been here during the rushes and during the quiet periods, and have never had trouble getting a machine in any area of this location. People are there to work out and you don't see a lot of lollygaggers. Rush hour hits the locker rooms the worst, with hardly any locker space available and generally a line for the bathrooms or showers. As a female, I sometimes feel uncomfortable by the "creepy dudes" who hang out right outside the front door and eyeball everyone coming in or out. I definitely recommend visiting with a friend if you're going to be here in the wee hours of the night or morning, just for general safety. In short, you get what you pay for. I personally am a good fit for PF because I just need the bare minimum, and this location is right next to my office. I hope to be a member for as long as they'll have me. read more

Two full floors of new strength machines (upper body, abs, ad lower body), barbells & weights (in 2 areas of the gym!), treadmills, ellipticals, stationery bikes, and stretching, as well as big, clean locker rooms with new lockers and even a pay-by-credit-card vending machine for headphones, locks for lockers, etc. The front desk also sells, towels, locker-locks, and other stuff you might need. Their tv's also have music streaming, and treadmill tv's have nearly every cable channel under the sun. Showers and changing stalls are clean, staff is out on the floor and locker rooms cleaning frequently, there are multiple cleaning stations with sprays and paper towels (yes, YOU clean what YOU use - dont be gross, people) and no 'lunks' grunting. Just come at off-peak times to make sure you get on the equipment/weights you want and bring your lock for your locker. (I will upload pics soon) In terms of the PF membership contract, annual fee is WAY cheap plus you have a choice of 3 different plan levels: 1) in-club only membership, 2) in-club with no cancellation fee if you decide to cancel your membership (costs a little more), and 3) the PF Black Card plan that lets you use massage chairs, tanning, and visit any other Planet Fitness. Call them/See their website for their prices. I'm so happy PF returned, i missed the government center and the porter sq PF. I hope they open more branches within the city later on too. It is Planet Fitness. It is right in Downtown Crossing. Yes, it's not the biggest gym by any means. I am not body builder, just looking to shed some pounds and gain some muscle, tone up. I have exactly what I need here. It can get really crowded if you go before and after work, but that is expected. Unsurprisingly, the weights area is a giant sausage fest. I like to take the dumbbells I need to a little corner as a result. I hate the awkward eye contact, but this is inevitable in any gym. I am disappointed when workers tell me not to use the machines in the 30 minute workout and 12 minute ab sections. It gets really packed around the times that I have specified, so when I see nobody in those areas, I take advantage and use the machines to stay active. I know it's reserved for people doing those routines, but I definitely eyeball to see who is doing what before proceeding. The bathroom is surprisingly clean. From time to time, there isn't any soap. I haven't seen anything "out of the ordinary" as I would in AMC Loews or Macy's down the street. What I'd be wary of is theft. If you have something to put in a locker, lock it up. There's a CVS next door! There's cameras and other security measures put in place, but this is a gym right in downtown Boston! Don't risk it. Another gym more than happy to pull a bait and switch on a customer. Signed up in December, heard very little aside from "we should be open next week" for several months until they finally opened in mid-April with a promise not to bill us until May (uh, thanks for not billing us for services we cannot use?). In the meantime I lost the card I used to sign up, couldn't update that online so I called and was told to come in and it wouldn't be a problem. Wrong. Unfortunately it was such an issue that I had to cancel the account, there was just no adding my new card back since they are open now and that means checking accounts only. Now, mind you they still claim they can do this online in comments to people on Facebook but as it turns out you either give them access to your checking or you cannot be a member. Let's talk about the GYM! This review is completely about the gym space. Free weights space. 3 Squat bars. Open space for stretching and abs First floor is the cardio room and second floor is the rest of the gym. Showers in both females and males locker rooms. Lockers available for the day but not overnight & you have to bring your own lock. Machine in the upper level with waters and refreshments. Tanning beds and massage rooms available.
