Admit it... when you see a group of elementary school aged kids, you might think to yourself: "Oh no!" It was school vacation week, and I was at a cooking presentation at the Boston Public Market, and yes, there was a load of kids there. 25 to be exact. With 3 adults. They took the subway all the way out from the East Boston YMCA. They were great. They were in their seats, answering the chef's questions, using their inside voices. Their adults were great. Rather than having the kids come up for their samples, they served their kids their plates and water. And at the end told the children clearly what was expected of them - you are going to put on your jackets, wait at your seat till it is time to get into your assigned groups, and say "thank you." read more

Gym memberships are reasonably priced. Wait for a deal on the initiation fee. Classes get pretty crowded & mostly women. Zumba especially is packed. During peak hours, gym is crowded too. Outrageous unfriendly policy. My credit card got changed and I have been out of the country - January and February. When I got back YMCA tells me my membership has been cancelled, that I owe 2 months membership plus a 2 times per $25 fee for not refreshing my credit card information. I asked them to waive the $50 fee and that I'll pay for the membership - January/February they couldn't charge and that I'll continue with my membership. Jose- manager said they cannot waive the fee because that's what it says in the contract. I don't understand the business where they have 0 flexibility and understanding for their members. I won't go back, and don't recommend YMCA to anyone. I have a business of my own and if I always did charge my costumers the way "the contract says" I would probably be out of business already. read more

I lovvvve this gym!! During the covid era you have to book time slots (72 hours in advance) and you must fill out a covid prescreen before going in. You check in and get your temperature taken. They're really doing the most to keep the members safe. All of the equipment is well kept and it's never crowded because only so many people can reserve at a time. I've also been loving the classes that have been outside! read more

NO FREAKING WAY, JOSE. People who signed up here probably did so because of proximity. Seriously, not impressed with how they run their business. The membership fee at this YMCA is not quite I would call cheap or even appropriate in contrast to the quality of customer service, classes and amenities they equipped with. Trust me, I was going to cope with whatever they can provide. However, I'm venting out today maybe because of this dreadful New England weather or what but people have rights to know so here you go. So obviously I had to cancel the membership because I can't come here anymore. I called days ahead before they automatically charge monthly fee. I just simply told them my situation nicely and what answer I get "Unfortunately the membership fee will be forfeited for the next month because you had to call 15 days ahead." Are you joking? What kind of a gym takes 15 days to process cancellation of membership? They wouldn't empathize nor accommodate with my situation. More ridiculous thing is that I had to come to the gym physically sign the agreement to cancel. Wow what a great way for them to squeeze money out of people. Secondly, I wanted to eat better and just be healthy overall, so I signed up for the nutrition consultation. Hear this, 1 hour talk for $50. Anyways, I was hopeful that I was going to get some kind of exclusive information, something like maybe celebrities know. Don't bother. All this particular nutritionist can do is repeating something I would call general information over and over again during this 1 hour session. Something anyone in this world would know. Eat vegetable and fruit. Dude, this is Boston, THE educational city. Also they threw away my water bottle that was almost full. I'm going to workout as much as I possibly can until the actual moving date. Maybe I will go to every class they offer and use all the TV, towel, water, THE VERY UNIMPRESSIVE STUFF. The gym is clean (for the most part) and has updated machines. When I first started this gym it wasn't so bad because it wasn't crowded. Then they lowered their rates and here are the issues from that: -The gym is now always packed unless you arrive at 8pm. -You have to wait for 15-30 mins to get a parking spot. -Towels are never available. -Lockers are always occupied. -Rude new gym goers. -There are too many kids on the floor and they are unsupervised. It's a gym but it's beginning to look like a playground! Staff members are nice, but sometimes, when a personal trainer is on the floor they hog space, mind you the space is already limited. And they are loud in conversation when speaking with their client. I am pretty sure I know more about their personal life than I really wanted to. read more

This gym is welcoming to all. Staff are kind and willing to answer your questions. It's a great place to build your gym routine. Ask for Oscar - he's an amazing trainer. There are many other qualified trainers as well. This YMCA is adjacent to the East Boston Greenway so go for an extended walk or jog after your workout. Their group classes are updated monthly. The East Boston YMCA believes in the East Boston community as is evident by its ongoing involvement with the community. I moved to Eastie back in August and really couldn't justify keeping my Bally's membership; and a few trips to the one in Revere certainly didn't help! A friend of mine suggested the YMCA. I'm so glad I checked this place out -- it's 10x the place any Bally's ever thought of being. The locker rooms are big and clean, the staff is attentive and friendly. The classes are a good mix of cardio and core and don't concentrate only on step or only on spinning. They mix it up which keeps it enjoyable enough to keep returning. And only a few at night after work get a little crowded -- but the club's manager is very diligent about only having a certain amount of people so that helps maintain the numbers. I love the cardio machines because they have flat screen monitors attached to them (so little impresses me, right?) 'cause if those weren't there there would no way for me to actually finish a 45-minute work out without being bored out of my mind. read more

Great building, a fair number of parking spots, friendly staff, great lighting, large and mostly clean locker rooms. A few of the machines have some issues, but that is only to be expected in a gym. I'm a member of 2 YMCA's, East Boston and Needham. I go to East Boston for early morning or later evening and weekend classes, and Needham after work. This is ideal for many reasons, but also allows me to try a lot of classes and get the best workout in. If you haven't been to Julie's Boot Camp class, please don't start now, because it's really crowded. It's really crowded because Julie is amazing and this class will kick your ass. But she will also give you options for level 1-3 of difficult-ness, just in case your injury (or hangover) doesn't allow you to do a certain move. On nice days, Julie starts your class outside in the Bremen Street Park, where you can enjoy laps, lunges, tribal runs, what have you. She encourages you to meet the other people in your class, and after a few weeks, you'll know almost everyone. Then you head inside and work on strength. By that time, you're dripping with sweat and you'll think lifting weights is a nice break. After minutes of leg crushing chair poses, rounds of squats, and 5 million reverse flies, you'll be missing those laps. Julie makes everyone feel included, makes sure everyone can fit in (even if we run out of equipment) and offers challenges and changes to the routine so everyone can do it. Boot Camp is 1 major reason to join the Y, but some of the other classes (yoga, balletone, spin) offer great work outs and new things to try. The staff is great and the facilities are clean, so maybe go ahead and get a free pass at the desk to try things out! read more

First off, I struggle in giving this gym 3 stars (making it just ok). As a flight attendant who needs to be close to the airport when on call, this location rivals. The staff is always visible cleaning and re-racking weights that gym-goers often forego. I can't speak for the classes. For the folks that are looking for a traditional YMCA, this isn't it. If you take the time to speak with the staff, they'll divulge the interesting history of this building (an old firehouse) and the how this gym meets the mission of the YMCA. This Y does not have a pool which most resonate with the brand. This Y was made to supplement the greater Boston area for child/community care. For me, a runner and a bodybuilder, this gym is just ok. The equipment is nice, clean and they have a good variety. The problem is the small space, overcrowdedness (even during non-peak times) and the demeanor of some of the gym-goers. Maybe this is true of other places, but I get a sexist vibe when lifting as if I belong in the cardio section (which they have a lot of cardio equipment) via the gym etiquette from the guys that frequent this gym. I have no problem the amount I pay per month because I know the Y has a great cause. It's impossible to do trisets or giant sets, let alone getting your workout done in less than a few hours. Personally, for me it's a decent gym as I'm only in Boston about 1/5 of the month. Maybe gyms in Boston are overcrowded in general due to the size of the city, I can't speak on their behalf. I would prefer an anytime fitness but again the locations are outside the city making it a tough place to be for me personally as I need to be at the airport within a small frame of time. The membership price is cheap as well, probably better than most gyms in Boston. read more

This is a great gym for a great price. Your membership comes with 5 free personal training sessions. There are many classes in the morning and evening. I went to a Wednesday morning Y Cycle class, the instructor was very nice and helpful, intense workout. I am working with Kris for my free sessions. She rocks! Well I am a member of several Gym Facilities throughout the US for when I travel and I must Say that The YMCA in Malden is one of my favorites... The staff always greets you by name and with a smile and considering that the Builing is brand new it has everything to offer in a Gym such as two Olympic size swimming pools... both heated and has a separate room for heated Jacuzzi and we all know that nothing beats that after a tough workout. It also has a Steam room... very clean locker rooms... great lighting and sound.. with satelite music and no commercials. Plenty of parking... They also have a full court Basketball Gym and let me say there is not a Gym in the area that can stand on the same level for the money. they say that you always miss 100% of the shots that you don't take in life....Give it a Shot! ; ) read more

This gym is a joke. I signed up with a friend because it was closer to her house. They have a SERIOUS problem with parking and there is only 1 class room where they don't have enough space or enough equipment for everybody. Always crowded and there is no control how many people sign up. It's just a mess. The office is not organized. The computer system was down many many times, the manager is never there, and they lost one of my checks I gave them for payment. They never found it and despite of the manager telling me he would take care of it, I am still receiving late fee charge letters for about 5 months now and nobody does anything. The check is still missing...... I canceled my membership and I am never going back to this location, ever again! If you can, run from this place!!!!! read more

Call it stress, call it laziness, call it the love of carb-laden foods washed down by dark beer, but when I first moved to Boston, I put on 20 lbs in a matter of minutes. As distraught as I was over the weight, I was even more distraught over the price of gym memberships. I have no disposable income to speak of (hello non-profit employer) so when someone told me to check out the YMCA, I was skeptical. I mean...the Y-M-C-A? I saw visions of the YMCA's of my youth - dark gymnasiums with decrepit equipment and instructors with pot-bellies. So I was pleasantly surprised when I stepped foot in a clean, bright space (located in the beautiful East Boston park just off the Airport stop) filled with brand new treadmills, ellipticals, & weights; upbeat and pleasant employees; and reasonable prices. The trifecta! If you decide to go, try out some of their classes - they've got an interesting variety. I always stuck to the Power Yoga - a perfect melding of zen poses held for sweat-inducing lengths. read more

The only major thing I dont like about this place are the rough housing young guys that jump around like monkeys and look around the room to see who's looking at them. I feel like I am in a Highschool gym again. IS Anyone Supervising??????? I saw two guys today jumping with one hundred pound weights on their backs!! Not only is that super annoying, but extremely dangerous. I just wish I could be in the zen workout mode I intended without having to worry about silly boys practically killing themselves or others while showing off. Again... is anyone supervising??????? Let me begin this review by saying that this place that falsely claims to be a family-oriented gym for the welfare of the young men and women of America is not worthy of even one star. I have been working out at my local East Boston YMCA for 5 years now, and this gym had been my personal sanctuary. When life ever became stressful with work, school, or family, I'd always retreat here to physiologically unwind and center myself. I have been in many gyms, from all over Calfornia to San Juan and countless hotel gyms and BY FAR, my local East Boston YMCA has always been my favorite. Everything from the size of the gym to the actual equipment (you can actually get a killer workout on their ellipticals!) has always been ideal to me. Plus, the trainers and front desk have always been friendly and personable for the most part. Sure, they may not have a swimming pool, provide free towels, or have a sauana like other gyms that charge $30 a month, but I still felt "at home" there and didn't mind not having all those unnecessary extras. Not to mention they have a great variety of group exercise classes. For me, exercise and hitting the gym is not as much about vanity as it is about my own sanity and physiological well-being; it's mind, body, and soul. Fun fact: the three angles in the YMCA logo reflected by the different sides of the triangle symbolize development of a healthy "body, mind, and spirit"-- the core principles that the YMCA was founded on all the way back in 1844! So, why do I give the East Boston YMCA one star instead of 4 or 5?... Last week, I had to cancel my membership due to the fact that I am moving to Umass Amherst to pursue Health Psychology. My membership expired September 1st, and since I'm not leaving until the 5th, I thought the time lapse could easily be accomodated by a guest pass. After being a loyal gymat to their facility for 5 years, Mike (whom I previously thought was customer-service oriented) denied my request in accomodating my needs for the remainder of the time (September 1st-September 4th). Mike took the time to check on the compiuter for me only to inform me that it was against their "policy" and there was nothing they could do. I understand and respect policies, but I also think core principles that the YMCA was founded on in the 1800's should far supercede any sort of recent arbitrary "policy". Not to mention, customer service should always come first! In addition, I also called via phone to ask the same question the next day, and still was denied a guest pass or offered a prorate. Side note: I also found it interesting that when I called the YMCA in downtown Boston (the very first YMCA built in America) and told them my situation, it was absolutely no problem to issue me a 3-day guest pass-- at least they had not forgot about the core values of the YMCA. Maybe the one in Easty should take note, as basic customer service skills, human compassion, and simply doing what is right go much farther than adhering to "policies" located in fine print inside a computer. read more

Such a great gym filled with awesome staff! I've been coming here for a little over a year and love it. Zwany( I hope I'm spelling that right) works the front desk and she is so positive and really a sweet. She is always ready to answer any and all questions. Mike, I believe the manager, is also really nice and knowledgeable. I'm huge on customer service and this place has that down pat. The Zumba classes are really lively and can get pack quickly as well as the spin classes so try to get there early. It's a small gym but it's cozy and has the basic equipment for a good workout. They also just got all new equipment! If you live in Eastie and need a gym, this is the place. read more

Excellent urban YMCA that loses a star for having shorter hours than expected and no sauna or steam room like on Huntington. But otherwise an excellent, clean, facility with many machines. There is never much of a wait for cardio or for strength training machines, but the free weight area seems to be dominated by the same six no-necked unsmiling muscle-heads that every gym seems to have. This gym is bright, clean, and has state of the art equipment. The manager, Michael, is really friendly and has implemented a lot of changes in the program that brought on some great instructors and really fun (and sweaty!) cardio classes. One of my favorite trainers, Kelli, just moved away, but I'm sure Michael will replace her with yet another excellent, well-educated professional trainer. And I agree, the locker rooms are large and clean, and they really take time to make sure your experience is pleasant. This place is great!! read more

This place is great! Living in East Boston isn't always as convenient as living in one of the more popular areas of Boston, and a some things in the area aren't easily accessible without a car. It's great that this location is just a 5 minute walk from the Airport stop and is next to a nice park. It seems to be fairly new and updated inside. There's a decent sized locker room, a group fitness studio, and a reasonably sized gym. Like any other gym it gets crowded at peak times (especially after work hours), but I've never had to wait more than a minute for a machine. There is a free stretch area that can get a little crowded (there's a big machine in the corner). Overall, - No commitment, so there's no cancellation fees - Cheap, the price includes almost all classes as well - Childcare options - Updated facility - Close to public transport - Nice staff - Membership allows you access to all of the Greater Boston Y's read more

I was disappointed when I toured this gym because from the outside it appears to be huge and all brand spanking new and gorgeous but when you get inside you realize it is pretty freaking tiny. I am talking only a few of each machine VERY close together and during peak hours it is packed. I also dislike the fact that because I have a job and make decent money I therefore have to pay more than other people which is a lot for the size of the gym! Plus side it is very clean, has a small parking area which is better than no parking in Boston, and they have a pretty extensive class schedule. read more
