    Salad Supreme

Ciao! A bottle of red, a bottle of whites Whatever kind of mood you're in tonight ( You can bring your own wine or beer with no corkage fee!) I'll meet you anytime you want In Marino's Italian Restaurant Word of mouth had us looking into coming here. A quick review of other reviews had my mouth watering. I appreciate the heads up on the wait on the reviews, but really, it was worth it. We walked in and sat right down at about 10 minutes after opening on a Tuesday evening. The homey interior had more of a diner feel. Greeted warmly at the door the only hostess and waitress we saw all night brought us drinks and took our orders. The menu is simple and the waitress knows the right questions. The food is made to order. I ordered the baked Cavitelli with sausage. With it comes bread sticks and a side salad. Along with our meals we ordered an appetizer of mozzarella sticks. Just the perfect breading thickness. The cheese stretched for days. The side salad is basic. It is lettuce, a couple cucumbers and tomatoes, but the the house made Italian dressing. *Please can I just have a bottle to take home?* I usually am one to just stick with ranch, but I wanted to try it and it blew me away. Our table of 6 entrees came out about an hour after we originally sat down. It really was worth the wait. I took small bites and savored it. It was enough for me to take home and have a second night. My husband got Baked Spinach and Cheese Manicotti. My meat eater of a husband had a non meat meal and loved it. We had 2 people at the table get the calzone and couldn't finish. My mom had to get the Salad Supreme - (Lettuce, Tomatoes, Cucumber, Olives, Green Peppers, Pepperoni, Artichoke Hearts and Mozzarella Cheese). The only reason I say she "had to" is because this location does not have gluten free options. We heard a rumor that the food is from scratch and it was delicious. Again, worth the wait. People filtered in the door all evening. If you are worried about the time restraints, go ahead and call ahead and get take out. But the food coming straight to our table, the company, and the good time we had made it worth it. Again the one waitress who seemed to be running the front part of the restaurant was the bomb. She was superb and we loved her.

This is just a little spot on a busy street that didn't disappoint. House Italian dressing was perfect. Only one happy lady doing this by herself deserves to be pointed out. Food came out after a little extra wait was worth every min. It was top notch homemade food that deserves that extra tip. Can't wait to make this a regular spot for us. Thanks for still delivering quality food.

We have been frequenting Marinos for at least 30 years. Mr and Mrs Marino seem to never get tired of making the best food at great prices in a very clean restaurant. I'm not kidding one bit when I say, you can not get better Italian in the Des Moines area! I can't explain, just get there. You won't believe it!

Marino's in Johnston was 4/5*. The bad? Ranch dressing is crap, the red chili flakes on the table look to have been there since 1901, and their creamy Alfredo is subpar. But that's the little stuff all in all. Everything else was GREAT! Their red sauce and their breadsticks is where it's at. The Baked Cavatelli with Sausage was my favorite, very flavorful and the perfect spice. The Shrimp Parmigiana with Linguini was really good as well. Baked Cheese Tortellini was good, we should have added sausage to this to make it even better. Our server sang Happy Birthday in Italian. It was sweet and she was darling. We will definitely be back for some red sauce entrees.

We recently moved to Johnston and really liked Pagliais Pizza. We got home late and Pagliais was closing so we searched for another pizza restaurant that was still open. We found Marino's on yelp and their hours showed they were open until 10pm. I walked in a few minutes past 9. They were closed (new hours end at 9) but they still had a few patrons finishing their meal. She took our order and we loved the pizza. Our new favorite. Super fresh and not greasy at all.

Food was amazing! But service was a bit slow. So if you have lots of time and want good food go here. Recommend the manicotti.

We have enjoyed Marino's since 2002. This place always feels like going back to grandma's from the food to the service.

My wife and I have been making a point to try at least one new-to-us place each month this year…read more April's pick was Baratta's, a Des Moines staple that has been part of the local dining scene for years. We went on a Thursday night and walked into a packed house. Baratta's is one of those sprawling, multi-room venues that feels like it grew one dining room at a time, and there is a lot of charm in that. The menu is equally sprawling, and we started with the Focaccia bread, which was excellent. We split the Ravioli al Forno and still had enough to bring home, which is always a good sign. A couple of things caught us off guard. The room we landed in ran loud enough to make conversation a little work, and the wine list was shorter than we expected for a place this size. Neither was a dealbreaker. Baratta's is the kind of place that has earned its reputation, and we would go back to explore more of the menu. Worth a visit if you have not been.

A Des Moines classic. Last night took me to revisit Baratta's down on South Union...a South side…read moretradition with history dating back to the 1920s. I think they've been under the current ownership since 1993. Spacious parking and I've always loved the atmosphere at Baratta's... Kind of an old school vibe, but up to date too. From the outside you can still see the evolution that happened over the years. A combination of store and home that evenutally merged together, but it's not as obvious from the inside. We were greeted right away when we walked in and were seated at a high backed booth in the bar area. If I recall the seating in the main restaurant is mostly low top tables and chairs. I didn't catch our server's name, but she was BUSY. It seemed like she working as a host, bartender, and server from what I could see. All rolled into one. And she did a fanstatic job! Drink orders were taken first and food a few minutes later after we'd had time to look over the menu. Most entrees come with bread and a side of either soup or a salad. I love their salads. All their dressing are made in house if I recall correctly. We ordered the Amaggio with chicken, the Manicotti al Formaggio with white sauce, both with side salads (blue cheese and creamy garlic), an unsweetened ice tea, and a soda (Coke products). $56ish before tip. Amaggio: "A house favorite with your choice of chicken, shrimp, or both rolled in a mixture of fresh bread crumbs and then grilled to perfection. Served over linguini with roasted red peppers and mushrooms. Topped with our Amaggio sauce made with olive oil, white wine, fresh-squeezed lemon juice, garlic and basil." Manicotti al Formaggio: "A unique blend of five cheeses including mozzarella, provolone, parmesan, asiago, and ricotta wrapped with fresh pasta and baked with your choice of red, white, or marinara." In full transparency I've never had a bad experience at Baratta's. Food or service... But that being said I can say the same about A LOT of restaurants in the metro! Some that others complain about regularly. I'm been trying to figure that out... 1. Either I'm not picky... 2. Maybe I'm very forgiving. 3. Or maybe I just choose to approach each dining experience with a positive attitude right out of the gate and it's infectious. Maybe a combination of all of the above...? It's just easier to be nice sometimes. It is what it is I guess... The food hit our table after a short wait. Bread and salads first and then the main dishes. Everything was cooked perfectly. The linguini in my Amaggio was still al dente. The chicken was delicious. Perfectly seasoned and not the least bit dry. I'm glad I left my bread to help clean my plate with. Our server checked on us regularly, we never had to ask for a refill...it was just taken care of...and Joe stopped by to check on us a couple of times too. I love seeing owners on site and interacting with their guests. That alone can bring a restaurant to a different level in my eyes. It shows accountablity that can sometimes seem absent these days. As always a great meal and an overall fantastic visit to Baratta's!

The garlic olive chicken with steamed veggies was very good. Do not do get the Alfredo version. Our other entree was the Pasta Trio as we wanted to sample different things. I would say some BIG misses. I am not sure what their "lasagna" is but it isn't lasagna. It had no pasta and was FULL of a tomato sauce. There is NO tomato sauce in lasagna. Bolognese, 7-8 pasta sheets and béchamel. Simple The Alfredo was lacked flavor and salt. You need great parm to pull it off. The fried raviolis were not crisp and also flavorless . It's as if they got steamed sitting in a tray under a heat lamp. Overall a disappointment

The red dipping sauce was great and we liked the cheese sticks and onion rings though, they were crispy and the batter was well seasoned and not over the top salty. I ordered a chicken piccata but they seem to have forgotten the sauce? The waitress took it back to the kitchen and had sauce added and it did taste good once it was. The chicken was kind of mooshy on the outside and tough on the inside ... wouldn't order again. My husband ordered lobster ravioli and he liked it! He had shrimp added but said he would pick salmon next time as the shrimp was a bit tough. The kids had chicken tenders and fries and a spaghetti meatball. Spaghetti was a hit. Chicken was fine but the fries were sort of stale tasting with a weird texture maybe freezer burned? Not sure. In laws had a special steak medallion dinner and liked it. They said their martinis were not made correctly. I tried a gin and limoncello drink I forget the name of but it was not very good and I didnt like my husbands either I think we just weren't fans of their limoncello. We finished by trying tiramisu and chocolate cake. The chocolate cake was fudgey and rich. Too much for me but a hit with the kids and my husband. I usually love tiramisu but this one was not for me unfortunately. It was super wet and had a strong alcohol and vanilla taste but not as much espresso taste. Very thick cream. Very rich. We do not plan to go again but if someone else asked to meet there we wouldnt make a fuss. The decorations inside were very cute. I think sitting out on their patio would be nice too.
