A solid restaurant near the Coliseum, my wife and I stopped by for a quick lunch before our walking tour of the many sights in the area. We opted for cacio e pepe and pasta all'Amatraciana - both flavors quite good and the pasta cooked al dente. That said, they didn't quite hold up after we had a chance to try these Roman classics at other restaurants over the course of our trip. I have to say, I'm very disappointing and said about this restaurant. I'm alone and entered for just one pastas which is typical Romano and tastes not amazing but not bad! Everything is good and the restaurant is hidden but full of family-style atmosphere with a small outdoor area. However, I've seen one horrible service and experienced another, which brings me here to share with other tourists honestly. There's a young Asian family, with a babe passing, they asked for the table, and the lady refused her directly by saying "sorry, it's close" in partially Italian, the restaurant is empty at this moment. Just 2 mins after, the restaurant had another enquiry from two western young ladies, and without a second, offered the table. so what? Selectively open to tourists? After, when I asked the bill and willing to pay by credit card, the gentleman (obviously is not the boss) answered yes without hesitation, while the same lady (above who claims the restaurant is closed) said from the door, even not bother to walk into my table, in Italian, "credit card not accepted when the bill amount is small", then in English, "only cash". My bill is 12.5 € , yes not much, but I'm not a tourist for Rome once or twice, I live here and I know what's the rule. This place is nestled away from the main road but the food and service are wonderful, it's quiet and appears to be family owned. Lots of pride and love goes into the meals here and we visited twice because we loved it so much. We will absolutely be coming back when we are in Rome again! read more

We absolutely loved the place. The food was awesome very reasonably priced and service was great. Being so close to where we stayed in Rome , this place is perfect bang for the buck We ordered their cheese plate that Xmas with grilled bread butter , parmesan reggiano, pecorino and a semi soft cheese. This place was amazing. We had great service, and my cacio e pepe was amazing! The bruschetta was also delicious, and the house wine was fantastic. My husband said his lasagna was great. Found this restaurant near our hotel and decided to give it a try. The food was pretty good and decently priced. Now I know this may not be the best cooking Rome has to offer but as far as it being one of the majority of tourist targeted restaurants, Mario's was very satisfying and enjoyable. Our only real hang up was that the service was a bit unfriendly. Enough so to make it a little awkward. It's easy to look past our server's personality however when you're eating on an adorable little backstreet in the most beautiful city in the world. read more

A little restaurant at a great place in Rome. I have to give them only 2 stars. The waitress looked like we bother them to come to eat there. Portions were not big, but sufficient. Bread was extra, olive oil extra as well. The pasta with salmon tasted very well, but I found a piece of aluminium foil in the sauce. On the end, even we did not ask fot the bill yet, completely greasy bill was layed in the front of us. read more

It's an oldie but a goodie: if I could give them zero stars, I would. Why? Because I never got a chance to eat there. We went there one night, my husband, my 17-month old son, and me. We asked for a table, my son quiet and smiling in my husband's arms (he loves restaurants and looks forward to discovering new ones as much as we do). The man at the door insisted that they were full despite the fact that there were empty tables everywhere and turned us away with no apology or suggestions for where we might find a place less "busy." And then proceeded to sit the next two groups of diners who walked in, both obviously without reservations. I understand if you don't want to serve children, especially young children. But the very LEAST you can do is own up to your policy and do it with some grace. It's hard enough when most restaurants in Italy don't even open for dinner until 7 or 8 and you're trying to feed a toddler. Providing no indication on your advertisement about your policy and treating families in such an unwelcome fashion is just unexcusable. Ironically, we found another restaurant, where the same thing happens as ALWAYS happens with my son when we take him out to a sit down meal. He charmed the hell out of the wait staff and the other patrons--to the point where the "mama" who ran the place insisted that she be allowed to get a picture with him, and one of the servers actually ran to another restaurant so she could surprise him with a straw to make it easier for him to drink his water when we found we'd left his plastic one back at the room. But Mario's thought it was better to lie to us. We are recommending the lovely apartment we rented to everyone we know who wants to visit Rome. But we'll tell them to studiously avoid this restaurant despite it being mere steps away. read more

Delicious cacio e Pepe and we were able to get a table inside without reservations on a Thursday night around 9pm though the outdoor patio was full. However, they do require that you order dinner in order to get dessert and they don't allow you to share entered but with pasta around €9 and dessert around €5 the only limiting factor is how hungry you are. read more

The rudest reception I've received while traveling through Rome, Venice and Paris. We came for lunch after noticing the very charming atmosphere. That is all that was charming about the experience. The waitress refused to sit our party of seven even after I offered to break the group up into parties of three and four. This would have required moving one table away from a larger group of tables that was only being used by two diners but the waitress refused. I was then told that inside seating was unavailable even though there were two occupied tables. After reading a couple reviews, I believe it was because we were traveling with two 14 year olds and an 11 year old. They were dressed very conservatively and were very well behaved. I cannot say how the food is here because they refused to serve our party of 7 because we had kids with us (ages 14 and 11 that eat adult portions). There were seats outside but we were told not enough for our party size. When we inquired about inside seating we were told you must have a reservation, it was 1:20 on a Wednesday afternoon (who makes reservations for 1 pm in a Wednesday- apparently no one, since no one was inside eating). While waiting for an uber we saw others being turned away. Avoid this restaurant if you are traveling with kids or if you dislike rude service. read more

First stop in Rome and it was by accident we found this little place. Starving and wandering the little back streets, we stopped here and got seated right away outside. Other couples wandered in shortly after us. We ordered 1/2 liter of wine, bruschetta pomodero, carbonara, and buccatinni--all so satisfying and delicious! This was a place chosen for me by a group for lunch, with a set menu. It really looked like it had potential with a nice outdoor seating area. The food itself was ok at best. The ravioli was good and they also served a beef dish with a porcini mushroom sauce. The desert was a strange gelato, fruit, and liquor concoction that was not very good. After a day of walking around Rome, my 12 year old daughter and I decided to stop by this restaurant since it was near our hotel for an early dinner. My daughter was not hungry, having eaten some Italian street food earlier in the afternoon. After being seated, I told the waitress that only I would be eating. She informed me that unless we were both eating, we could not be served. Umm, excuse me? It's not that there was a wait for seating - there were at least a dozen empty tables. So I politely asked for two meals to be carried out - I figured we'd both eat back at the hotel a little later. Unfortunately, we could not order carry out food, as they did not have a license for it (or so I was told). If you have children, DON'T EAT HERE. THIS PLACE IS NOT KID FRIENDLY, regardless of what The YELP page says. All in all, their loss - I had plenty of money to spend. Decent food, great prices. Stopped here for lunch while exploring the neighborhood. Tucked away in a side street it looked like a nice little neighborhood restaurant. I had the spaghetti with fresh clams(11€) and the wife had buccatini with tomato and bacon(8.50€). My dish was delicious, with the flavor of garlic and clams really permeating the dish. Pasta was cooked perfectly al dente and caught the attention of the group that sat down at the table next to us. The wife's buccatini was a little under cooked and a bit bland. Based on the service since the older waiter wouldn't even provide seats. Walked in the other day and asked for a table at around 8:45pm, he says they were full. There were 3 empty tables outside, okaaaay maybe reserved? Pointed at all the many seats inside, he says no servizio. But I said there's 2-3 tables with people eating inside... He says sorry no servizio, we are full. The other people eating outside were all looking because they had saw what happened, talk about what is up with him. It wasn't a language barrier, he knew enough English to not want to provide a table. A couple that was leaving said, there's an open table over there now!
