My family had the pleasure of dining at 44 Osteria during the summer of 2023, and it was hands down my favorite meal in Rome. Everything about the experience was superb--from the attentive and friendly service to the exceptional quality of the food. Service was highly attentive and profoundly engaged. Mood was pleasant with dim lighting and music was pleasant. Could hear and be heard. The bread basket was delicious served warm with amazing crust. The pasta was a tad undercooked but was the best tasting sauce ever. The melon sauce entirely new and never seen of heard of before. They took "summer melon" which I was told was cantaloupe. It was cut into 1/8 inch teeny tiny cubes and simmered for a long time until very soft and the sweetness a little washed out. Food was good- some things better than others. Really enjoyed the taste and texture of the melon pasta. Tasted like a vodka (pink) sauce. Braised beef was also good. The veal was a bit toi tough. The carbonara was a bit too a dente for my liking. Shaved Artchoke was refreshing and crunchy. Desserts were fabulous! We ordered the chocolate lava souffle and the creme brulee which is not the typical but wonderful. Ambience was nice, mosern contemporary chic. We ate at this restaurant the other night while on holiday in Rome. Although it has great reviews we did not have that experience. First , the owner does not leave you alone. He came over when we sat down as was pleasant. After that , it got awkward. If you tried to talk to him, he walked away. While the restaurant advertised a full bar online, that is not the case. We did get cocktails but they were not good with only one vodka available and no juices available to mix, or do we were told. He insisted we had the tiramisu as it is the best in Rome! It was good. Then when my husband was paying the bill and had money separate for our waiter the owner Insisted we give him the money. Actually demanded we give it to him , not waiter. I had been in Italy for 2 days and was severely disappointed in the food situation. Place after place was just... meh. My hope was dwindling that I would find the magic of Italian food here in Italy... but then!, Osteria came along and turned it all around. Literally the best meal we had in Rome so far and one of the top Italian meals we have ever had. Not only was the food fresh, delicious, and high quality, but the owners were two of the most warm, delightful, friendly people I have ever met. We were greeted with such hospitality , offered lots of suggestions, and had such a lovely conversation with them both. Hidden on a side street, without Yelp friends we would have never seen it. This is the real Rome Italy deal!! Osteria is an over the top hidden gem. We started with the Filet Carpaccio. 5 Stars!! Second course was the Lasagna Bolognese. 5 efn Stars with house made pasta and sauce! Dessert was the real Italian Tiramisu. Not a custard but more of a pudding. 5 Stars. We are hooked on Rome! We found this restaurant through YELP and walked over from our hotel. We walked in and the owner greeted us with gusto and offered a glass of Prosecco. The ambiance is comfortable and light and we loved the menu. We enjoyed the beef carpaccio with truffles the home made bread and the lasagna. Delicious home made pasta !!! We finished up with the best tiramisu I have ever had served in a coffee cup . The owner offered is a little lemoncello that we enjoyed very much!!! This is the place to eat in Rome. On our last night in Rome we just happened upon 44 Osteria Quarantaquattro. It was superb. The food was incredible, the staff attentive, the place quiet and elegant. Quarantaquattro!!! The 44! The food, the food and the food. Service is good. Ambiance is just Roman casual. Warm and inviting depends on the time. They have patio seats/ cover charge obviously. Best part about this place: half portion everything! I'm the type of person that orders the entire menu every time. But can never eat it all or even half. But here, I can fuel my big eyes and curiosity of ordering everything without having so much left over. The pesto! It's what they are known for. I'm not a pesto girl but I tried it. It's good. Not into pine nuts. But I love many primi piattis! The lemon fettuccine was so refreshing: I can shower in it. As well as their carbonara or the tartuffo tonarelli. Just yummm Love the Sparda ( sword fish), half portion of veal too. I want a bite of everything and this time, I took a few bites. It was that good. We decided on this great restaurant for our 29th wedding anniversary dinner. We were welcomed to a great table for two in the corner and enjoyed the ambiance. Our waiter was superb as the wine recommendation was incredible as was the tasting menu we enjoyed. The off menu lemon pasta was one of the best dishes I have ever had. The risotto with the fruit was AMAZING! We opted to come here after finding another restaurant (Rifugio Romano) with a long waitlist. So glad we did! Quickly seated, and staff was friendly and curious about us. Treated us to a sip of champagne to really kick off a great meal! The risotto was one of my favorite dishes in Rome! I could have fallen into a tourist trap saying here but I certainly can't find anything like this in the states. Gnocchi was also delicious with clams and walnuts! I was searching for a nice Italian restaurant with great reviews, and I can see why they are so highly recommended. My wife and I were warmly welcomed by the owner Sergio, upon arrival and were seated immediately and our server "Margarita" was very attentive and helpful. The place was very clean and was playing the Beatles in honor of John Lennon's birthday. They have an extensive collection of wines. My wife and I ordered saffron pasta plus pesto pasta, which they split into 2 plates for sharing. As for the main course, I ordered the beef fillet with truffles which literally melted in my mouth but the best part was that my wife did not want beef or seafood, so the chef made a special lemon chicken dish for her. The dessert was cheese cake and sorbet. If you are ever in Rome, make sure that you visit this place. read more

Cute little restaurant in the middle of Rome Italy. It s was walking distance from many of the nearby hotels so I am sure this is where they get a lot of people. If I'm being perfectly honest, they were a bit more higher priced than many of the other restaurants we went to, but they are on the fancier side and the food was good. They suggested the artichoke salad to start which was lovely and a fresh start to the heavy pasta I was about to intake. I got a pesto pasta with a noddle that uses no egg. It was a lot of good and after the salad and the bread, I could only eat about half but it was delicious. They had both indoor and outdoor seating and a nice selection of wines. read more

This place is good, but is kind of the definition of a tourist trap. The host, an older gentleman with a vaguely mysterious continental accent and distinct rizz, engaged our table in the most hilarious night of upselling I have ever encountered. But we kind of just went with it. We were in his world and we simply surrendered. Knowing that many people will just order a pasta (primi plate) he walks up to our table and says "tell me what you are getting from our secondi proposals." He then takes your order by basically telling you what to order. He does it in such a charming way that, it appears from the reviews, nobody calls him on it. He upsells you on everything. Food, wine, dessert. I feel like he would be a billionaire if he gave motivational speeches to salespeople. Weirdly, the meal was possibly the best we had in Rome, which from my perspective is not saying a lot. We went to the highest rated restaurants and most of the food was pretty meh. The host is so deft at what he does that he doesn't even show you the bill. He takes your card, swipes it, and you find out how much you paid the next day when you look at your account on your smart phone. For perspective, it was the most expensive meal we had in Rome, but not outrageous. Not sure if I recommend or not. It depends on your personality - if this sounds like something that will make you feel ripped off and used, avoid. read more

Incredibly awkward experience. Like many others who have commented previously, upselling is their schtick. You will most likely be pestered to order more and every course possible. If you ask for a glass, they'll suggest to order a whole bottle. Once you insist on a glass, they'll conveniently serve you the "best" choice, which is more expensive than the price they previously quoted you. There are no prices for wine by the glass on their menus as of Nov 2023, so I was solely relying on their quoted price. Of course the actual price of the glass of wine (17 euros) wasn't mentioned until the check came out. No, I do not mind paying more for a nice glass of wine. I live in the Bay Area and frequent Napa on the weekends. It's the principle of being quoted (13 euros) for a glass of red wine and then being told at the end of the meal that I was served a more expensive, better tasting wine. All I wanted was a glass of the house red wine. Shouldn't the choice be up to me, the paying customer, on whether or not I want a better wine? The one plus of the night: all staff in the restaurant are friendly and we were offered small glasses of Prosecco on the house upon arrival. Food was alright - nothing I would consider unique or special. As someone who has dined at many fine dining and Michelin restaurants around the world, this comes nowhere close. If you're truly looking for a $$$ or $$$$ experience, don't come here. P.S. If you're Asian, or Asian American like I am, really don't come here. The owner asked us where we came from and after explaining that we are xyz Asian American (not Japanese), he then proceeded to tell us he knows some Japanese. That is not relevant to either of us, as neither of us are Japanese. He also made a random comment about covid. At the end of the night, he proceeded to say his farewells in Japanese as well. We started with the artichoke appetizer which was to die for (a must have!). Next, we split 2 pastas - carbonara and pesto. The pesto was the best I've ever had, very fresh! First, I will say the food was good. But, I will never go back nor recommend to anyone due to the experience. The owner came to our table probably 5x during our meal to talk at us, not with us. Three of the five times he made comments about how he wanted to take our young blonde girls home with him. He said, "I hope you understand my humor". I absolutely don't. My first trip to Italy, our first dinner of the trip, and Osteria Quarantaquattro set the tone for good food and friendly service. It was recommended by friends and well worth the recommendation. It is a smaller restaurant in a more quiet area of Rome so I suggest Italian nighttime attire (dressy but walkable) and a reservation if you can as it gets busy later in the evening. We were a twi-top but they cqn accomodate larger groups. We do not speak Italian and the staff worked with us easily, helping pick an excellent wine within our price point, offering an English-Italian menu and providing primeri recommendations. My wife and I first dined here in 2018. When we made a return trip in January 2022, we knew that we had to return. In fact, we dined here twice when we were last in the city. Everything about Osteria 44 is splendid. The atmosphere is quiet; the décor, modern and tasteful. The food is exquisitely prepared--generally standard fare, but always well executed and with an interesting twist. Every dish manages to impress both in terms of presentation and preparation. But there are plenty of places to get great food in Rome. The reason we would not consider a visit to the city complete without stopping here is because the service is impeccable. Sergio, the proprietor, is an absolute delight. He is charming, hospitable, gracious, and genial. He is solicitous without being officious, punctilious without being overbearing. He is, in short, the consummate host and raconteur. He ensured that every time we were there we genuinely felt like we were the only patrons in his restaurant that evening. His staff is expertly trained and equally attentive to detail. I cannot recommend this place more highly. We cannot wait to get back here. read more

We discovered this restaurant in 2013 on our second visit to Rome. At the time I had a vegan diet and I was prepared to eat another version of pasta pomodoro because most restaurant menus at that time had very little that I could eat. Sergio seated us on the banquette at the back of the restaurant and chatted us up very charmingly. When it came time to order, I mentioned my dietary restrictions and, with no hesitation, he told me what he could do for me and I agreed. My husband ordered from the menu and discussed wine with Sergio. Both meals and the wine were delicious and we returned on another night before we left Rome. By then we were in love with Rome and have continued to visit Italy and Rome whenever we can and we always go to Osteria Quarantaquattro at least twice. We always enjoy the food, wine, servers, Sergio and Chiara and the ambience because dining at this restaurant is a culinary experience, not just a meal. If you are cost conscious and feel that you need to control the process and/or just want a meal that you can order from a menu, this probably isn't the place you want to eat. You won't appreciate the opportunity to experience new food and wine and will miss many of things that make it a special experience. As for the upselling and request for tips, we must remember that restaurants have been struggling for 3 years now and many have gone out of business. I would prefer to navigate the upselling and request for tips than have the restaurant cut corners on ingredients, service and other things that matter. read more

Dining at Osteria 44 was a phenomenal experience. My wife and I started our meal by sharing a couple of appetizers: Artichoke Salad and Caprese con Bufala. The artichoke was a very nice pairing of a fresh crisp artichoke, flavorful shaved parmesan, and light pepper. The Caprese con Bufala consisted of fresh juicy tomatoes and soft lightly milky mozzarella. We split a Bucatini alla Amatriciana for our first course. We quickly realized we should have ordered our own plates because the pasta was fantastic and our favorite part of the meal! Thick savory noodles were covered in a flavorful creamy tomato sauce mixed with meaty lightly crisped pork. I had the Ossobuco alla Romana as my main course; the meat was rich, meaty and tender and marinated in a rich sauce. My wife had the Baccala which was a flakey melt in your mouth cod. Of course, we had to have dessert so we had two. The Tiramisu was creamy and milky with a nice coffee flavor. The Profitterol were airy puff pastries with a sweet cream filling, covered with rich chocolate and paired with fresh juicy berries. read more

This was our last meal in Italy and did not disappoint. The service was also above and beyond, and the owner was very warm and inviting. Definitely a creative and refined approach to traditional Italian cooking. I would give it 5 stars, but they're kind of hustlers -- they showed me the bill and then asked what I thought but it was worth (plied with delicious food and alcohol, I added about 20 euros, hoping the extra would go to the cooks and server). They also worked overtime to upsell us -- not a problem, per se, but make sure you know what you really want. We started out with a lovely and unique artichoke salad and a more traditional caprese with some of the freshest mozzarella bufala I've ever had, followed by two pasta dishes (one with pesto and one with a lemon saffron cream sauce). The main course was a sublime duck dish cooked with orange, with fantastic sides (including potatoes cooked in duck fat). We declined dessert, it they really did a good job selling us on it.
