FINALLY! I was able to go back to get my highlights! Blonde Ambition un FULL EFFECT!!! Anthony does a hell of a job with color and contiues to be the stylist ever!! It is EXTREMLY hard for me to find a stylist who can handle my natural hair. My hair is mixed and naturally curly so it takes some skill to get it sraight and smooth. Before visiting this salon I hadn't had my hair trimmed in 5 years. Being natural haired, I wanted to see how much length I could retain. It turns out your hair will grow tons if you neglect to cut the split ends off for years on end! A woman from work recommended this place to me and I went in on my lunch break to make an appointment. The receptionist was young but very lovely and professional and booked me with Dom the stylist. I'm so very glad to have been booked with her because she restored my faith in the whole black hair salon experience. The place is nice and is not like your typical "hair shop" with lots of loud gossip and being left under the dryer for hours on end because the stylist quadruple booked her Saturday morning. There was a nice sense of calm, ease, professionalism and expertise that I have seldom witnessed amongst a younger salon crowd. Dom did a thorough consultation with me about my hair routine, goals, and what services were going to be done. She didn't make me feel uncomfortable or shame me for not being a salon regular and gave me very helpful product tips and tricks to protect my hair during these colder months. As long as Dom is my stylist I'll be sure to visit again for another trim! read more

I had a wedding in Pittsburgh and off the reviews, I booked for a bridal updo. I called the salon and spoke with Collin and he answered all of my questions. On the morning of my appt. he was punctual and very nice. I didn't know exactly what I wanted but he worked with a few options I showed him and brought exactly what I was looking for to life. My first visit was with Collin and he so amazing and talented. He was everything you want and need in a hair stylist. The head massage was blissful and I've been getting complimented on my hair for days now. What I liked most about him was his amazing energy and ability to soothe me especially with this being my first experience with the company. This is my third time of visiting Mark and Anthony Salon, and the vague sense of dissatisfaction I'd gotten on previous visits was only highlighted on this 5 hour visit. I have a weave install of Bohyme Brazilian Wave. I had worn it for five weeks curly and wavy, and I wanted to try the straight look. I arrived right before 1pm last Friday. As soon as I sat down, I told my stylist, Char, that she needed to detangle, twist into four, and then shampoo in sections, twisting each section as soon as it's done because it tangles otherwise. The first process of detangling went okay. But then Char promptly ignored my direction to wash in sections and then tossed me in the dryer for 25 minutes for "conditioning" with my hair all in one messy ball. Of course it came out even more tangled. At this point, she had to detangle it again. Pro: she enlisted the help of the shampoo girl. Con: they both proceeded to tell me that my high quality hair could not be 100% human hair, and was I sure, and was it cheap hair, because it should not need such care. I had been specific about the care needed, the direction had been ignored, and now the quality of the hair was being called into question. After detangling, Char had me sit aside for 20 minutes because her 3pm appointment needed attention. I said nothing. Eventually the shampoo girl came, twisted the hair as I had previously instructed, and then put me in the drier for the conrrows to dry. The subsequent blow dry and flat ironing went okay, with Char stopping to tack down two small corners where the weave was coming off while grudginly admitting that the hair looked really good and was actually quality. She suggested a trim. I agreed. I finally was ready to go home at 6.30pm. I was exhausted, and a 2.5 hour job had been unnecessarily prolonged and my time wasted because instructions were ignored; and my hair had been insulted. Insult turned into injury when I was presented with the bill $95 for a wash and flat iron. The breakdown was: $60 for shampoo set $15 for trim $10 for press/curl (Why is this diff from shampoo set?) $10 for weave (sewing down has always been part of weave maintenance, and she literally did 3 minutes of sewing total). I was irritated, but decided not to argue. I tipped 26% to show it's not about the money, but I will NOT be going back to Mark and Anthony Hair Salon. I'm much better driving out somewhere not so convenient where they'll listen to instructions and not extort money from the customer to make up for time that they caused to be wasted in the first place. read more

Horrible! Went in for a trim, coaxed into color, left with a 70's shag. My sister asked me what I did to upset the stylist. Never again. The atmosphere was the least of my concern. My hair was over processed and it had to be cut off, very disheartening after growing it out after a year of being ill. No apologies, just visible irritation when I expressed my genuine concerns about MY hair. I could go on, but lesson learned. The presentation of your stylist is the end result. read more

After trying two competitors, I found Mark/Anthony Hair Salon. From my experience, it is one of the best hair salons in Oakland, perhaps even in all Pittsburgh. I think that not only Anthony is a very skilled hair professional but he is also a cool guy with interesting hobbies. Back to his hair styling business, I also find the rest of the staff there to be friendly and quite competent, from the receptionist/cashier to other stylists to the shampoo assistants. The salon itself is spacious and always clean. Last but not least, I think that the prices there are quite reasonable, attracting many students. I have been a client at Mark Anthony's salon for about 9 years...I have had black hair, blonde hair, long hair, short hair, and installed hair. Through all my hair phases, this salon has given me VIP treatment and service! Karmyn is my stylist. If she is booked up, Collin will do my hair, and do it WELL!!! The atmosphere is great! The service is wonderful and the massages at the shampoo bowl are an added bonus. I literally refuse to let anyone else do my natural hair. I can be very fickle and indecisive about styling/color, but Karmyn and Collin always go above and beyond to assure I make a good decision. DO NOT GO THERE. I lost 6 inches of my hair because of this place!! I went there for the first time and had my hair done with Tee. I asked for an ombre with darker roots (my hair is dark brown) and I already had highlights on. I spent 4 hours there and my hair came out ORANGE with red roots! I looked absolutely awful and it wasn't anything close to what I asked for. I went back an hour later and asked them to fix my hair. Spent more 4 hours at the salon and left looking even worse. My hair started to fall out while I was at the salon and they did absolutely nothing! I left there with my hair falling out and looking absolutely terrible. They literally cooked my hair, and I lost 6 inches of it! I went to a different place on the next day and all the hairstylists were terrified with what happened to my hair and said they had never seen worse job in their lives. It was all damaged and the color was so ugly. I had 6 inches of my hair cut off and I used to have really long, pretty hair. Now my hair is half of its old length because of Mark and Anthony Salon. Not only that, but when I called they said it would cost $60, I ended up paying $150! I asked for a refund and they gave it to me right away, but they can never give me my hair back or all the money I had to spend at the new salon and with all the products I have to use it now to fix what they did. It's going to take about an year for my hair to grow out and not to be damaged anymore. I've never regretted something as much as going to that place. By any means, do not go there if you care about your hair. Don't make the same mistake I did. read more

I want to preface this by saying that if this had been on other Saturday, when I didn't need to be somewhere - I would've been okay with the wait and length of time spent at the salon. However, I was in a wedding party, and needed to get to the Bride's house by a specific time to get my makeup done and finish getting ready. Unfortunately, I found that this salon is definitely not a place to go if you're on a time crunch. The morning of the appointment I found out I was mistakenly booked with someone who doesn't come in on Saturday's, but was told I could get my hair done by a different stylist. I had specifically requested to get a roller set done, and when asked if they would still be able to do it, they said it shouldn't be a problem. In order to save time just in case, I had shown up with my hair detangled with deep conditioner. However, this didn't make any difference since the stylist insisted I get a wash anyway. Maybe I should've been more adamant about just needing a rinse. It honestly just seemed like she took it was a chance to upcharge me and keep me busy while she was handling other clients. Speaking of which, it was clearly apparent that she had been overbooked. I understand and appreciate them wanting to accommodate me due to their scheduling error - but they should have been upfront with how it would impact the time spent at the salon because I would have tried to make other arrangements. To be honest, I'm not sure how the scheduling conflict happened in the first place, or why it wasn't discovered sooner. Anyway, because of the time crunch with her other clients, I wasn't able to get done what I had wanted (roller set) and ended up running late to where I needed to be. My hair turned out fine and she was able to achieve the look I was going for. However, I then found out later after washing that my hair had sustained heat damage, which was exactly what I had wanted to avoid by getting a roller set. I had voiced my concerns when she said she would be using a curling iron, but she ensured me that it would be okay because of the heat protectant she used. All in all everyone was nice and courteous and the space was nice, but the lack of communication from beginning to end made it an overall negative experience. Admittedly I am writing this review quite a bit after the fact. Mostly I wanted to see if my distaste (and hair damage) from the experience would mellow out with time. However, I am still growing out the heat damage and dealing with having to style my natural (4A) hair in ways to avoid showing it. The date of the appointment was 10/8/16 - so in the time that's elapsed since then things could have changed for the better - but I can't speak on that since I have not gone back. read more

This was my first time visiting the Mark Anthony salon. I was extremely nervous, because I wanted to dye my jet black hair, platinum blonde. It takes a special set of skills to lift such a dark color, to another extreme. I scheduled my appointment w/ the stylist Anthony, I told him what I wanted, he told me that he believed he could lift the color in one session, and that it would not be a problem. Anthony was very calm and patient. He walked me through what chemicals he would be using and why, explained the various stages of coloring from jet black to platinum. The entire session took about almost 4 hours. I sat with bleach on my hair for a little over 2 hours. I just KNEW my hair would fall out, but, it didn't. The color came out PERFECT!!! There was no hint of yellow/orange... it was completely white/platinum! I was amazed and completely in love! Anthony is a genius! The price was more than reasonable. I was afraid, with all of the chemicals, and for how long the treatment took, that the price would be astronomical, but, it was only $60. When I go for my touch-up, I will definitely be rescheduling with Anthony! The guy is a genius! read more
