The inside is full of awesome art as well - some on permanent display, others seem to be more temporary. There are plenty of places to relax and read, including two outdoor spaces in the middle of the building. There is also an innovation station, where you can work on art like monogram or paper arrangements. The librarians were also very friendly and encouraged quietly seeing how beautiful their library is.

A lot has changed in the past 30+ years and the library is nicely modernized but still keeps a familiar and welcoming feel. A big draw is the children's room. The book and media selection is fantastic, there is a fish tank and puzzles and games, and there are lots of year-round programs offered for kids of various ages. I also appreciate the bargain used books for sale - I always make sure to check these shelves out as several times I've found excellent like-new condition hardcover books for just a dollar or two. Thanks Wilton Library for being such a wonderful part of the town for so many years!

So after hitting the Yale Center for British Art, we speed walked (sped walked?) over to the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library. Why? Google it and you'll understand when you see the pictures. Beinicke is Yale's rare book and manuscript library - not their main university library or their law library. The reading room is open to registered researchers only, but the public are welcome to visit the library's exhibition hall. And everyone visiting New Haven should! The library was built in 1963, and the the architecture is incredible. The building is a granite veneer shell, fastened to a structural steel frame. Inside that structure is a glass-enclosed tower of book cases. The granite was milled to 1.25 inches thick to allow filtered daylight in - in the afternoon/early evening, the marble turned an amber color. We walked back past it at night for a different view of the building. It is really incredible architecture, and the library hosts exhibits you can see in the exhibition hall when you visit to enjoy the building (when we visited, the exhibit was "Taught By the Pen: The World of Islamic Manuscripts"). The building is incredible and definitely worth a visit if you're exploring the Yale campus!

Likely, you'll meet another neighbor who is taking out a book or a video, or whose 6 year old is going to one of the many kid's programs, or whose teenager is waiting to meet up with a tutor, or who has just gotten some help to find a great recipe for gluten-free apple. - A delightful change from the mass market, multi-media, social extravaganza that some of our local libraries (think Westport), have become. She went above and beyond the call of duty in helping me to find exactly what I needed and and did it in a cheerful and friendly way. She tracked down the book I wanted, and then scanned maps within it. She next found an additional resource I was unaware of, and made photocopies of its content. Lots of interesting nooks and crannies to explore, local historic artifacts, paintings, etc. Also, nice selection of DVD's to borrow, and fun activities for babies and toddlers during the week. If you are local, this is a great place to stop during a walk up Main St. or to bring some books or laptop for study.

It was followed by a marvelous chamber music concert featuring a collection mostly contemporary works influenced by a connection with nature. Grace Farms' mission is to support nature, arts, justice, community and faith. It's a much-appreciated place to refocus and refuel in these difficult times.
