There's a great vibe inside, warm and friendly, the perfect place to meet buddies for a pint and take in some music. Located right across the way from the old Beamish brewery, this is easily my favorite spot in the city. My best memory here was on St. Patrick's day, 2012. I got here by the late afternoon when the whole country was already sloshed. Although it was packed it was like the happiest place in the world. The tin whistler in the trad band playing at the time was TOOTING HIS TIN WHISTLE OUT OF HIS NOSE! AND HE WAS PLAYING REALLY WELL! An amazing sight to witness.

Tomorrow it will be bacon and cabbage in this city centre pub but today (Wed 23 Sep) Irish Stew was high on the lunch menu. We had started with a smashing vegetable soup, tasty, straight from the pot and no extra salt added. Then came the stew, a plateful of smashing food. Loved it and finished it off before staying on the trad path with a well made apple tart. A cup of decent coffee rounded off an enjoyable hour or so.

The salad was well varied, including a potato and dill portion, and well dressed. The prawns and the dip were also excellent. On a personal note, I'm not really sure that brown bread and prawns, though they do pop up together every now and then, is the best of combinations. We had the brown bread with the soup and it was fantastic. But, wet from the prawns, it didn't taste its best. Perhaps, the brown bread could be served with the dish but separately. Still, that didn't take much from an enjoyable meal which we rounded off with two decent coffees (€2.10 each). The indoor bar is impressive enough, and I could see a gigantic party taking place with many well-attired bartenders eagerly serving them. Instead we had but one guy who seemingly had a whole range of duties, bartending being but one of them. When he finally acknowledged us, we asked about food, only to learn that wouldn't be available till after three. No sign, of course. I had a beer (my second choice, of course), and the missus an ice tea. There were maybe twenty others hanging out back, and while they were having a good time, it seemed the place just wasn't filling its potential. Perhaps we went at the wrong time. One can hope.

Arguably, the best thing about the Brog is the size. It's a maze of a place, with quiet spots and more lively sections. Even at it's busiest, you can still find a spot to hide away in.
