Our room was a studio apartment with a kitchenette, mini washer/dryer, fridge, dishes and pans, stove, microwave, dishwasher, huge tub/shower combo, heated towel rack, iron and board, hair dryer, shampoo/conditioner/body wash/lotion/soap, small eating tanks, mirrored work desk/vanity, lots of windows, etc. There were plenty of regular and usb plugs. They brought fresh towels and remade our beds every day which was super nice. We couldn't figure out how to use the washer/dryer even after watching several online videos. Right before checking out we found instructions in a drawer not near the appliance. Oh, well. We dried clothes on the heated towel racks. The shower doesn't have a curtain or long glass panel so water squirted all over the bathroom. No bueno. And twin beds for a married couple on vacation weren't the best. The view wasn't great.

Unfortunately, the good parts mostly ended there. We stayed here 4 years ago and it seems like nothings's been maintained or cleaned particularly well since then. The first room we got had a kitchen that was clearly in disrepair and the living room furniture was stained. Both bedrooms were also set up with two twin beds configured as single king-sized beds, which didn't work for us with two kids, so we we asked to switch rooms. The good news was that they were able to do that without too much trouble. The new room had a kitchen that was in better order and cleaner furniture, but the room was smaller, darker and on a lower floor. It wasn't bad, but it just wasn't good either. I think we may have gotten lucky the first time with a higher-floor room that had a view of the cliffs in front of Arthur's seat and been there when the rooms had been recently appointed. It was nice to have dishes, a stove, a microwave and dishwasher in addition to the two bedrooms. We even had a washer/"dryer" combination unit which we used. I put "dryer" in quotes because the clothes came out mostly dry--enough to hang up to dry in the room in a few hours--but not actually dry enough to put away. All-in-all, we'll probably look for something else the next time we're in Edinburgh, but if you want an affordable place with a good location and are willing overlook some dinginess, this place might be for you.

We dropped off our large bags before heading off to grab a bite to eat at The Conan Doyle, a local pub worth a review of its one. We spent the night at hotel and had to head off early to meet our tour. The staff took care of storing bags and having them in a room already when we returned 4 days later! These folks never missed a beat, we had a fridge stocked with basics, coffee, tea, etc on the counter. They made this part of our ongoing trip effortless.

Since our flight arrived early I was happy that the front desk was able to get us checked in early. Concierge walked up to us to hand us a box of chocolates and a welcoming note from the hotel. Staff was also responsive when we were short towels or in room amenities ran out. Our room was close to the M Club and a good size for us. Bed was comfy and bathroom was large. Breakfast was included as part of my benefits and the buffet and made to order items were the same every morning. Hot Buffet included scrambled eggs, haggis, bacon and sausages, mushrooms and tomatoes. Cold buffet had cereals, breads and pastries, yogurts and fruits. The smoked salmon plate was our favorite but porridge, waffles were other options. The M Club evening was ok for drinks but the finger food options were quite limited. The nut mix was my favorite. Location of the hotel was at the end of the Royal Mile which was less crowded and quieter. A Tesco convenience store was a short walk away and the Palace of Holyrood and Scottish Parliament sites close by. We arrived and departed via an Uber as it was more convenient for us. This Travelodge is located in a very desirable area of Edinburgh, walking distance to Old Town, the castle, GrassMarket and other very cool sites in the city. Despite the foot traffic, even in high season, the noise is very low and the room is comfortable enough. A huge con is that WiFi is not complimentary. You get 30 minutes free and then are charged £3/day. It's 2018... Offer some wifi! There's a 24 hour bar downstairs and full-service kitchen/restaurant during normal business hours. Overall not a bad choice but there are probably better options with more amenities in Edinburgh.

I have a hard time with stairs. When you enter the hotel, there are several stairs. When we arrived in Edinburgh, we walked from the Princes tram stop, a little bit of a hike with our luggage in tow. So having to lug our suitcases up the stairs was not welcoming in the least. After we went up a few stairs, we saw a buzzer that you could ring for assistance; which we did. They came out and brought our suitcases up the stairs. Our room wasn't ready but they stored our suitcases till the room was ready. Once ready and we retrieved our suitcases, we had a few more steps to get to elevator. There wasn't anything special in the room. There were 3 single beds. My friend pushed 2 of them together, I took the 3rd single. There were hardly any electrical outlets. My friend unplugged the TV, we weren't planning on watching TV. I unplugged the desk lamp. I didn't understand the shaver outlets in the bathroom. I just basically needed something to charge my phone and back up charger. The bathtub was tall. I am short. First night, I took a shower. I actually tripped getting out of the tub. I couldn't quite get my leg up high enough, ended up falling on the floor. Luckily I didn't get badly hurt or bruised. I took a lot of precautions after that. The hotel was located in an area that was walkable to so many things. So that's a plus.

I hope to age as gracefully as the Old Waverley Hotel. Not that I want to live to be over 150 years…read moreold, but it's in remarkable shape, all things considered. Beyond having a rich history, I thoroughly enjoyed the creaky, tilted central stairs, the free high-speed wi-fi throughout the property, and especially the spectacular views from my room of Scott Monument and the Edinburgh Castle. They do, however, need to reconsider the furniture configuration in the rooms: there's no room to fit a chair under the work desk because the bed is simply too close. In order to work, I ended up having to straddle the edge of the desk. That's -not- an attractive look, let me tell you. Also, kudos to the exceptionally efficient staff at the front desk. They may be brusque, but they will get you checked in/out in record time! That's kind of how this hotel goes: it may not be glitzy, glamorous, or the newest, shiniest hotshot on the block... but it'll get the job done. Like 'wham, bam, thank ya ma'am' done. And that, good readers, is a respectable thing indeed.

(Our last experience with hotels in Europe was not a great one. We had a tiny room and a tiny bed,) When we got our room it was bigger than we expected. It had two beds-one was a king and the other a queen. What a nice surprise! There is no air conditioning in most hotels in Europe. With the windows open and a fan I was quite comfortable because the temp was around 60° the three nights we were there. The hubby who likes it much colder said it was bearable. The staff was friendly. The hotel was clean. I don't remember if breakfast is included in the price. There is a buffet breakfast or you can order off the menu. The last morning I ordered the smoked salmon, poached eggs, and sourdough toast off the hot menu. It was delicious. Had to have smoked salmon before I left Scotland...wish I would have ordered it sooner. Yummy. Would have given it 4 stars but with the lack of ac and having to climb several sets of stairs before you get to the elevator I'm giving it 3 stars. In all fairness, on occasion I did use the hotel ramp to get into or leave the hotel but that entailed walking through the rain. It did, however, lead you directly to the elevator.

Yes, the hotel is in a historically preserved building on a lovely quiet street across from the Royal Terrace Gardens but the amenities left me cold, literally. First off, no elevators. The manager/concierge told me they aren't allowed to change the building. I get that but then I had to walk to the 4th floor with luggage. (I know; it's a dirty job but someone's got to do it.) Second, electric outlets. My converter would not fit in any of the outlets around the bed. (There were two types.) Thank gaia for the shaving outlet in the bathroom so I could plug my phone in. When I awoke I had to plug the coffee water heater pot in the one outlet near the door that it fit - despite its location across the room on the mantle near some outlet that was completely useless. I was boiling water on the rug. Third, the hot water shower. There's a sign that says it's electric hot water so make sure the switch is on. The water was hot but had no force when coming out of the shower head. And if I touched any control in the shower it immediately went cold. ‍ There was a room heater which worked and the double bed was comfortable. I had to leave at 8 am - which is when breakfast was served so the manager told me to come down at 7:45. That was very nice of him - and he was always very nice. Breakfast was ready and it was fabulous. Home cooked mushrooms, eggs, tomatoes, toast, cheese, fruit, butter, jam, tea - fit for a king! It is this reason that I upgraded my rating. The wait staff were lovely as well. No complaints about any of the people. The room just doesn't have modern conveniences. I go camping so I don't need them but I want them for a winter night in Scotland. I am really glad I only stayed one night. I paid 80 USD for the night through an online travel booking service. PS: it's right around the corner from the Pink Triangle gay bars.

Just be aware if you have heavy luggage. Additionally, regarding luggage, the room I had was on the top floor and the lift does not go the entire way. This wasn't immediately clear upon booking. One final item to nitpick was the toilet. It was a bit difficult to flush in my room, but it might just be an older design/unfamiliarity on my part. Overall, this is a safe, clean, comfy hotel with good service and an affordable rate.
