He even gave information on the winery where it is produced. They offer wine tastings on the weekends which I tried last visit. Always a fun experience. Yes they have a great selection of wines varying in price, but they have a pretty good beer selection as well. They even host fun events where they will auction/raffle a rare beer, so you can buy the bottle. I recently went with my beer loving boyfriend to their Goose Island Bourbon County Beer event and he loved it (mainly because he was a raffle winner haha). Overall this is a great place in Findlay Market with friendly, down-to-earth staff members. I'll definitely be back to do one of their Saturday and sunday 11 AM -3 pm wine tastings with my dog (he won't drink, but they are dog friendly) :)!! read more

To say this place is a haven is an understatement. Every person on the staff is helpful, attentive, and kind. Findlay market is a really special community, and market wines holds a lot of that together. Ian and Michael especially are well knowledged, open to accommodating your wine preferences, and are always willing to help. The ambiance needs a bit of work, but i personally love a wooden bar (not as epic as Japps, but that's a different review) and the one at market wines was made well before the 1900s. Love this place! Market Wines has over 500 wines, and an assortment of beer from all over the world, wine glasses, and beer and wine accessories. Every Saturday and Sunday from 11:00 am - 3:00 pm are their Wine Tastings. For only $8.00 you get to chance to try 5 different wines (white and red). I think that is a good deal. If you try the tasting, and want to purchase a bottle of wine (or more) you get $2.00 off your order. It is always packed when when I come in. This is my first time trying the tasting. Even though they are busy, you get assisted quickly (including the owner Michael which was very helpful and friendly). Awesome laid back place to kick back and enjoy your drink. Why, oh why did it take me this long to stop by for a $5 wine tasting? My boyfriend and I recently decided to stop by Market Wines while we waited for a table for Saturday brunch at Pho Lang Tang (how else would you kill 20 minutes?) and my are we glad we did. The shop is just lovely, with a well varied selection of wines AND craft beers to satisfy any palate. For $5 you get to try 4 wines and if you're lucky Mike the owner will be around to chat with you about every one of them and give you awesome details about what makes the wine special. There is usually music on the weekends which sometimes could be a miss/hit depending on what you like. If beer is your thing, they've got you covered too. They have a very decent selection of bottled craft beers from around the country and they also have craft been on tap. Every Monday there's usually a beer event that often comes with a keg take over. All in all an awesome place. It has officially become my favorite place to hang out in Cincy! read more

I originally went to Market Wines on a recommendation from a friend who suggested we set up a wine tasting event for Cincinnati Habitat for Humanity Young Professionals. I came down to the Market on a Wednesday afternoon, and people were wandering in and out of the cozy, friendly shop when I arrived. The shop is set up in a very user-friendly and asthetically pleasing way- making it easy to feel comfortable browsing in a "hands-off" way, or to ask for help if needed. I was able to speak directly with Mike and I easily set up our event with him . He was super flexible about giving us the day and time we needed for the event. The cost to us was extremely reasonable as well, which allowed us to generate some profit for HfH. Mike did a fantastic job of picking bottles in a price point that would appeal to a Young Professional crowd. This showed in the fact that almost EVERYONE left our event with a bottle of their very own. I would recommend Market Wines to ANYONE who wants to learn more about wine, become more comfortable with wine, or who just wants to drink wine! read more

The number one adjective I have for Market Wines is accessibility. For two reasons: Geographically--they are at Findlay Market, and I'm usually at Findlay Market at least once a week. And Financially--they have wines at an easy price point. I haven't actually gone in looking for an expensive bottle of wine, so I don't know their selection there. But every time I need an under $15 bottle of wine, this is where I go. I don't waste time browsing, I just say to Michael: "I'm cooking fish tonight in a cream sauce with asparagus, show me something under $10" or "I'm going to a dinner party, I have no idea what they are serving but they don't have very sophisticated palettes so show me something under $15". And then he walks me over to a wall of wine, picks one and says "This one". I love that. I can also go in and say, "I'm feeling Tempranillo today" and the same magic happens. As I said, I haven't yet been in to ask for something pricier, like "I need a $50 bottle of wine that is going to make someone feel like I paid $75", but he can probably do that too--and if he can't, he can recommend something else. I also love his wine tastings, though I haven't been in a while. They are great ways to learn about "everyday" wines, and it seems that every time we go we meet great people. read more

Michael Maxwell is everything you want in a wine shop owner: * In his shop, he's omnipresent; I have never stopped in to find someone else tending the bar in his stead. * He knows his wine because he drinks his wine & he suggests wine that he likes, not the wine that makes him the most money. I love wine & I know it pretty well. Whenever I ask for recommendations form people that work in wine shops, their suggestions uniformly suck. But not at Market Wines - I've never gotten a bad recommendation from Michael or any of his folks. I trust him so much that I let him pick out the celebratory champagne I bought for the birth of my daughter. That's trust. * He knows beer too, and gets in beers I have a problem finding elsewhere. His shop isn't big, but he knows how to use the space. His is the only shop I've found to reliably carry beers from the Dark Horse Brewery from Michigan's U.P., one of my favorite breweries. He even gets in their specialty beers .... But best of all, Michael loves Findlay and the neighborhood. I used to work at the market when I was a teenager & I shopped there with my Grampa when I was a tyke; I have a deep and abiding love of the market. Stopped my on a Saturday morning/afternoon because they had the wine tasting for $7 each. We have been wanting to do this for a while but just never at Findley Market this late in the day. You can't go wrong with the $7 wine tasting, while we did not end up buying any of the 4 wines I can see us coming back and doing this again to see if we find something we like. That man is one in a million. He is always willing to help and you can tell he is so passionate about not only wine but his customers as well. One night I was making steak and I do not like red wine. I asked what is a good white that will go with a big hearty steak. He suggested 3 different wines in three different price ranges. Again another huge plus, this pace has something for everyone! I went for the middle range one and now I am actually hooked on it. It was a french wine that you cannot find anywhere else. Another reason I love this place. They have hand picked specialty wines. I've had something that was $6.99 per bottle, recommended by the gentleman that I believe is the owner, and it was fantastic. He also suggested an inexpensive Tuscan (which are typically fairly pricey) so I was a bit skeptical, but was pleasantly surprised by it after my first sip. They also do wine tasting every weekend on Saturday and Sunday from 11 AM - 3 PM. You get 4 samples for $5...not a bad deal! They also from time to time do beer tasting, where you get 5 for $5! The owner, Mike, is very knowledgeable about both and will give recommendations and explanations regarding anything you need. Here's how much I like Market Wines. I have two local liquor stores that have regular wine tastings. I never go to them. On Saturday, my wife and I were in the suburbs at a wine tasting that just irritated us. We bailed, still in the mood to buy wine and drove to Findlay for the last hour of their tasting. Michael, the owner, knows wine. He knows his clients. He pairs his clients to his wines. All too often I've asked for recommendations (say for a friendly dinner party) at other shops and been taken to a $60 California Chard. Michael's featured selections are usually under $20 and often under $12 a bottle. When my wife asked about a port, he asked a few questions, narrowed down the type she liked and offered up an $11 bottle of something she's been sipping from since. If you want a nice, locally owned, service oriented wine shop that won't insult your intelligence or budge, go to Market Wines. This is a consummate small bottle shop, with owners and staff who are hugely knowledgeable and who care about helping their customers choose just the right wine or beer for their taste, need, and budget. I come here mostly for good beer, and their stock is very select. I always find 3-4 interesting and unusual beers to take home, and since they're just down the street from Rhinegeist, there is usually something great from them on the shelf or in the cooler. I highly recommend the sat & sun wine tasting (not sure when it starts, but I know it ends at 3/4 PM). It is a joy and they always have new wines for you to taste for the cheap price of $7. Heck yes. They also usually have live music which makes you feel like you walked into a cute little shop somewhere in Europe. This is one of my favorite places in Cincinnati and I always bring visitors here. As far as their everyday wine collection, they have a lot of great wines for you to purchase at very reasonable prices (you also get a discount if you do the tasting). If you have questions, the staff is super knowledgable, so feel free to ask. Be aware that it is dog friendly, so if you don't like dogs for some odd, inexplicable reason, avoid it.
