Japan Centre - Walk through the gate

This store is in a warehouse complex just east of North Acton station. The entrance to the complex…read moreis on Victoria Rd. It looks like an office complex and is hard to imagine any grocery stores are in it, so it was intimidating to walk through what looked like a gated area at first. I followed the winding path for 2-3min and found Unit 16 towards the end of this estate. The store is very spacious and has pretty much anything you ask for from a Japanese supermarket. I found snacks, sweets, rice, noodles, sauces, frozen food, drinks and some kitchen and household items. It even had a small shelf for Japanese books. (No photos allowed inside for some reason) This place can fulfill your needs for Japanese food. It is hidden, but don't hesitate to go in!

LOVE. THIS. PLACE…read more Seriously, a Godsend. Being Japanese, I was concerned about how I would meet my Japanese food needs when I moved to London. I moved into a student housing accommodation in North Acton and was super duper excited to find that there was a Japan Centre 5 minutes away. It's a little tricky to find at first. It's in an industrial complex and you have to walk down the car entrance for a bit. The store is at the end on the left. Obviously, since this is a warehouse and not a full grocery store, the selection is limited compared to the Soho location. They have a small selection of fresh produce but mostly you will find nonperishable and frozen items. It's good enough and saves me from having to haul my butt to Soho. There's also a "sale" section with foods that are past their sell-by dates. It's mostly stuff that lasts a long time and the reduced price is an added bonus.

This shop reminds me of John Lewis on a budget, complete with Camden style strippy tights for your goth moments or years. J. Selby comes complete with a wig salon with normal coloured wigs and a magenta wig! I thought the kitchenware was really cheap and there were some pretty glasses on offer from 1.50. I want to come back here (Why can't I ever buy anything here the first time, damn North London rent) to buy this silk polka dot dress for 34.00. It is made by some Indie designer beginning with Dark...but I can't read my own handwritting so I'll have to work on my freehand and let you know. Go to James Selby..you will not be disappointed!

It's one of a dying breed, the independent department store. Upstairs, shoppers can buy sewing notions, polyester granny smocks and aprons, low end Wedgewood lines, Pyrex, and linens. A nice range of linens is offered from practical no-iron percale to sheets and pillows by Monsoon. On the ground floor, clothes are grouped into boutique-like clusters. Evans has a section, so does Monsoon, so does Top Shop. Cosmetic counters flank the front of the store, next to the wig shop and hair salon and a few sticks of furniture are sold in the basement.
