The selection is just ok- very few high end authentic pieces. (The sell knock off designer purses too) To me it feels more like a small thrift shop than the other consignment stores in the surrounding suburban towns. The selection was more old styles, not really current trends. Mostly cheap, run of the mill brands available. I have just browsed, never bought or given anything for consignment. I've found much better selection and pricing at both Unique thrift store locations on Route 22. read more

I LOVE Marlene's I go at least once a week and have always found items that I instantly fell in love with. (I bought most of my bags from here) The selection does vary depending on the time of year. For example during the winter (at the time this review was drafted) there are 2 racks full of furs coats, capes, etc they range from mink, fox, rabbit, and beaver....the price range was 60 to upwards of 1000 depending on the coat (remember some full length minks sell for 10,000s) There is also a pretty good handbag selection...this tends to range from no name bags to Gucci, LV, and Chanel This also applies to the shoe section as well. I had a high hopes that I could find a good home for some clothing I could no longer use. I am a Nordstrom shopper, but not the kind that buys from the uber designer collections which warrant consigning at the super high end resale shops in Short Hills or Livingston. I left 16 pieces -- she rejected about 15 items, including about 6 pairs of NYDJ Jeans which retail for nearly $100 a piece. I asked a bunch of questions about why some items sell and why some don't. I think she knows her business, but some how I didn't feel very at ease that I was she was being very honest with me. As instructed I waited several weeks to check in on my items -- to see how the sales were going. She told me I was owed $16 (related to 2 items sold) after 1 month consigning my items. I was really shocked considering how picky she had been. I get that she needs to serve a customer base and perhaps my items do not fit that bill, but I can't think of any items that would have been sold for $16 each -- as she took mostly dresses and jackets from me. I also had trouble getting in touch with the Marlene herself and she explained that she doesn't answer the phone much as she is avoiding bill collectors. Which of course make me wonder if she fudges the sales and hopes that consignors just never come collect unsold items. As a consignor, you get very little paperwork when you sign up with her shop. I intend on collecting my unsold items before the end of the hold period, as they are worth more to me as a donation against my taxes than the apportion I get from her resale of my items. My experience as a consignor aside, she does have some nice things. The store is desperate for a face lift and good cleaning. Smells like an old attic. Sorry to say my experience was definitely sub par. read more

Over the years I have brought many items to Marlene's. Shoes, handbags, jewelry and assorted clothing. Marlene has always been helpful and pleasant to deal with. However, I am often confused by what she will and will not accept. I have had some really nice pieces rejected, and others priced much too low. It is a no frills, basic consignment shop. Despite the low return on consignments, I would rather offer affordable clothing to people who need it than claim the items for tax purposes. read more

Marlene's Boutique is a consignment shop selling women's clothing both informal and formal including coats, pashmina scarves, shoes, suits, sweaters, slacks, jeans, shirts/blouses, evening gowns, jewelry, handbags all at affordable prices. The quality is mostly very high too. She also has fur coats and fine jewelry too. I bought a lovely down 3/4 length coat there during one of her sales for $15, a leather handbag for $10, a silk pashmina scarf for $10 too. Her selection varies with the seasons. Marlene and her staff are very friendly, courteous and helpful. Plus, they really know their stuff and will guide you and advise you when you ask. No hovering here. This is a small shop with two fitting rooms in a little strip mall. Nearby is a great bagel shop-"Bagel Box", an organic dry cleaners, TCBY, nail salon too. Next to this little shopping area is a US Post Office and CVS across the street. Additionally, there are restaurants across the street such as Sweet Basil's Cafe and Yoshi Sono Japanese Restaurant. CBL gift store is at the diagonal corner of Eagle Rock and Pleasant Valley Way. If you walk to the left at the corner of Eagle Rock by CBL, you will pass another little strip mall with a very good deli, kosher meat market and bakery stores, Mark and Julie's homemade ice cream store, some other stores, then West Orange High School. Next to the school athletic fields is a playground for kids and behind that is a lovely pond which is very nice to walk around and see the various wildlife living there. There are also benches there. Behind the pond is a senior center where you may use the bathrooms if you ask the center management politely. A bit of a walk but very nice in good weather is to walk up the hill of Eagle Rock (good workout) and you will find Whole Foods Market, Kmart, Wendy's, Pal's Cabin Steakhouse, and across the street Eagle Rock Reservation (wooded preserve with fabulous view of NYC skyline and trails and a fine restaurant-Highlawn Pavilion) and Eagle Rock Lanes Bowling Alley. A short drive away is ShopRite and Essex Green Mall with Movies, Macy's, Panera, Artist outlet shop, and other stores too. So, you can go and have a nice afternoon too. read more

I go into Marlene's once in a while not nearly as often as I would like. I do agree that the store needs a serious facelift. The lighting is awful and not placed properly. You can't see the clothing well. She does carry a lot of nice things but doesn't present as a particularly high end nor does she want to. She seems to take a myriad of items some run of the mill stuff that I don't need to go to a consignment shop to buy. Interestingly enough in her dressing room she has a sign that indicated customers are prohibited from changing prices on items. The price is what she has in her computer. I am guessing that she has had issues with this. Given the tags have no UPS to scan, a customer could easily change the price. She also doesn't seem to be up on what sells. Surprisingly i have seen beaded dresses and styles of items that are no longer in vogue--maybe 20 years ago but not know. No one is going to buy a sequined dress or beaded dress nowadays yet she has them to consign. Overall nice items but some are not worth buying in a consignment shop. The kind of stuff you can find in dress barn etc...The idea of the consignment shop is to perhaps get better quality goods at a reduced price...I find often times while she has a lot of nice things there is a disproportionate amount of items that are not anything special. After reading the other reviews..I will never consign with this shop. It does appear that she may be less then forthcoming on this end. read more

Lots of nice clothes here, but the people were a little cold. Didn't get a hello or any acknowledgement when I walked in, tons of signs saying you can't walk around the store with merchandise. Bought a LBD for about $22. Not a bad deal, but also nothing spectacular. read more

What should be said about Marlene? Seller beware! She is rude, uncouth, disrespectful, and does not give a hoot about your time or money. She would not say what your merchandise sold for or the percentage you are getting. As time goes by, she pays less and less for similar items, and she makes it very difficult to get your money or the unsold items back. Many times, I was told to come twice: once to pick up unsold items, and the second time--to be paid. So unless you are a glutton for punishment, find another place to sell your stuff! read more

This store is very inconsistent about there hours the store is an awsome store, nice things. But what does it really take for a business to open and close without telling customers and lots of affluent friends there open when they are closed or vise versa. Ironically if you see the picture with the hours that posted on this yelp review they are so off some days when I would go to shop, its only 3pm and they are closed already. SHAME SHAME! Kinda makes me question if business is doing okay??? Not sure as much as I love this store without store hours of consistency maybe I should find another store. I also had a negative consignment experience with Marlene's Boutique. When I went to get my unsold items by Marlene's 60-day deadline, she claimed that she could not find one of the items. It was a beautiful long dress and shrug that cost over $100 and was only worn once. I tried to follow-up but like others have written, she does not answer her phone and return phone call messages. Eventually she gave under $11 for the sale of the consigned item and kept saying that she really did not owe me anything because after 60 days the item really belongs to her. What a game Marlene plays since when I went to her by the deadline she claimed she could not find that particular item. If I had known how Marlene would act about the consignment, then I would have just given the item to charity like I have given other clothing away many times. The owner, Marlene is sneaky, for lack of a better word. I have been both a customer and consigner there for years and have been dissatisfied. My visits to Marlene's boutique have become infrequent as I noticed how she operates her business. It's quite disappointing as I have been familiar with this particular consignment store when it was called "Debby's new to you" several years prior. Marlene uses her language barrier conveniently, as she claims to "not to understand" when she has done something wrong. I recently brought clothes in for consignment that she was unable to take because of a space limitation. However, when I called to arrange a date to pick up that clothing, her staff said that it has been donated. However, after I mentioned "small claims court" the staff mysteriously located my clothing and gave me a call. There is nowhere in the stores contract that states your clothes will be donated if there is "overcrowding" so I was ready to go to war. Do yourself a favor, don't patronize her business. There are much nicer, friendlier, not to mention cleaner consignment shops in the North NJ area. Also, I'm pretty sure you'll get a better value for you gently used clothes elsewhere. read more

Good selection of shoes. I personally feel they price some of their pieces a bit high, especially tops and pants that are not in excellent condition. I would have given them 4 stars based on variety, section of coats, shoes and suits but I had a poor experience with them. I consigned about 5 pieces of clothes with them and never heard anything from them. When I visited one day and asked the attendant about my pieces, she checked and said they were still had not sold and must be on the racks somewhere. Being a meticulous shopper, I had already gone through all of the tops and pants in the store that day and DID NOT see the pieces I consigned. Never heard anything from them. A little shady and unprofessional. Definitely have me a poor perception of the level of integrity. Rarely visit them anymore. read more

STAY AWAY!!!!!!!!!!!! SHADY business practices you go into store and some items that are cheap kmart brands are prices at $50 and other brands very high end like Steve fabrikant or Eileen fisher prices at $20 there is no rhyme or reason to her pricing. I left her several items to consign with her and received a slip of paper and told to check back thats all I got. After two months of calling her and no answering of her phone SHE NEVER ANSWERS THE PHONE and she never returns calls. I finally went it and told her what sold out of 12 items only 1 item sold for $8 it was an $89 blouse. I told her i wanted my stuff back she said i had to come back after 3 days and i have to find the stuff myself why wait the three days? my guess is some stuff isnt at the store and she is selling from online and home and multiple friends selling her wares. There were many items not IN THE STORE. I called her three days later and told her had she located the items we are talking about 11 items (missing) She said there was an error and 9 of them had sold and the other two she located when asked how much she said $37. For all 9 items. Some of these items were $400 sweater knit dresses and she is trying to tell me she sold them for $4, 5 bucks she kept all my stuff and then resold them at a later time and you cant prove it I would never deal with her horrible attitiude and store is filthy and uncleaned i saw two spider webs and a real live spider in the web in the corner where the handbags are.
